A shocking grand slam by rookie OF Justin Maxwell off of Mets all star closer Francisco Rodriquez in the bottom of the 9th gave Host Washington a 7-4 win over NY Wednesday night at Nationals Park. NY had a 4-2 lead entering the 9th and saw it all disappear with Rodriquez allowing back to back singles then two walks before the slam from the Nationals rookie OF. The Mets now stand at 67-92 while Washington is 55-103. The Nationals swept the series while NY has lost 17 of 22.
Mets starter Tim Redding was great, tossing 6 innings of 4 hit ball. He walked and struck out 1 while throwing 95 pitches. 1B Fernando Tatis and C Omir Santos had rbi in the 2nd while CF Carlos Beltran singled home LF Angel Pagan in the 6th. Santos singled in another run in the 9th. 3 Mets had 2 hits apiece to pace the 7 hit attack: RF Jeff Francoeur, Tatis and Santos.
Star of the Game: Maxwell— 2nd consecutive night that a kid on the Nationals wins this award.

Game Notes: Redding has a 3.23 ERA in 6 September starts…LH RP Pedro Feliciano broke his own appearances record(86) when he entered the game tonight. He has now thrown in 87 games with 3 to go…. Francoeur had a drive in the 4th reviewed. The ball was called a double CORRECTLY and verified with video tape… Nationals star 1B-RF Adam Dunn was 0 for 4 and is in a 0 for 23 slump… Amazingly, the Nats were 0 for 87 trailing going into the 9th!… Game was delayed for 3 minutes in the 2nd… Mets rested 2B Luis Castillo….. Maxwell’s slam came on K-Rod’s 37 pitch in the 9th. This was his 7th blown save of 2009
Reyes update: Mets superstar SS Jose Reyes tore his hamstring while running in NY earlier this week, according to various sources. Surgery appears inevitable while he deals with this issue as well as the torn tendon behind his right knee.

Team is off Thursday then host a 3 game series with the Houston Astros to close out the disappointing 2009 campaign.
