Phillies 4, Mets 3 (96-51)
The Mets lost to the Philies for the sixth straight time in a dramatic game that included ninth rallies by both teams. The Mets got on the board in the fourth inning when Kevin Mitchell drove home Tim Teufel on a sac. fly, but the Phillies took the lead in the top of the sixth when they tagged Sid Fernandez for two runs.
Neither team would score through the end of the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth, Niemann gave up two runs to make it 4-1 and the game appeared out of reach for the Mets.
In the bottom of the ninth, Stan Jefferson struck out to lead things off, and then Tim Teufel singled. Rookie Dave Magadan singled and moved Teufel to third before Kevin Mitchell grounded out to short for out number two. Then back to back singles by Danny Heep and Howard Johnson drove home a run apiece to make it one run game. The Phillies went to their pen and brought in Steve Bedrosian, who was then able to get Darryl Strawberry to line out and end the game.
