RH Mike Pelfrey continued his strong start to the 2010 campaign with 7 shutout innings while SS Jose Reyes had 4 hits, leading the New York Mets to a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday night at Citi Field. Pelfrey allowed only 3 hits over 7 frames while matching a career high with 19 consecutive scoreless innings. Reyes was the team’s offensive star Tuesday and he looked like a brand new man after being given a day of rest by Mets skipper Jerry Manuel. “We thought that it would be time for him to get his stuff going,” Manuel said. “It was just a matter of him getting a bit of a physical and mental break.” Jose’s 2 run triple in the 2nd inning provided all the offense NY would need but PH Fernando Tatis added 2 important insurance runs with a two run homer in the 8th. The Mets have now won 2 in row and 3 of 4,sitting at 6-8.
MAXIMUM MIKE: Pelfrey has 3 of the team’s six wins AND the Mets only save, while his ERA sits at 0.86.
BULLPEN BLUES: Reliever Ryota Igarashi strained his left hamstring slipping trying to field a ball in the 8th which brought Fernando Nieve into the game.(10th appearance in 14 games) Tatis’ homer spoiled a potential save possibility for closer Francisco Rodriquez in the 9th.
CARLOS CHECKED OUT: CF Carlos Beltran(Knee) saw his doctor in Colorado and is progressing but has not been cleared to resume baseball activities.
DAVIS DAY TWO: Mets phenom 1B Ike Davis went 0 for 3 with a walk and two strikeouts in his 2nd ML game.
