Mets 4, Expos 3 (69-32)
The Mets finished their sweep of the Expos but they needed extra frames to do it. The Mets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second on Rafael Santana’s RBI single. Neither team scored until the Expos tied the game up in the seventh, but the Mets answered and appered to lock the game up with Ray Knight’s two run double in the bottom of the eighth.
Unfortunately, it looked like Davey Johnson left Bob Ojeda in for an inning too long. In the top of the ninth, Ojeda got the lead off batter out but then proceeded to give up three straight singles (which cut the lead to a single run) before getting pulled. Roger McDowell then came in and immediately gave up a single that scored the tying run. He then got out of the jam by getting Tim Wallach to ground into a double play.
The Mets went down quietly in the ninth as did the Expos in the tenth. In the bottom of the tenth, Wally Backman led off with a single then Keith Hernandez flew out to right field. Kevin Mitchell singled to put runners at first and second before Howard Johnson lined out to second base. Then with two outs, Ray Knight singled home Backman to end the game.
