Mets Top Giants in Extra Innings Thriller

by @ 11:07 am. Filed under 1986 Mets Diary - May

May 30, 1986 at Shea Stadium

Mets 8, Giants 7  (31-11)

The Mets made it six in a row and they pushed themselves 20 games above .500 for the first time.  The Mets jumped out to an early lead in the first inning.  Len Dykstra led off with a single and Wally Backman walked.  Keith Hernandez then singled home Dykstra to make it 1-0.  Gary Carter struck out and Backman stole third base, and then Darryl Strawberry walked to load the bases up.  George Foster hit into a fielders choice that scored Backman and Ray Knight singled home Darryl Strawberry to make it 3-0.

The Giants cut the lead to 3-1 in the second inning, then in the third inning the Giants tagged Bruce Berenyi for three runs.  Just like that, the Mets were down, but in the bottom of the third, they pushed themselves in front again.  George Foster hit a huge two run shot to give the Mets a 5-4 lead.

The Mets added a run in the fifth inning when Ray Knight’s sac. fly scored Gary Carter.  In the top of the sixth, reliever Rick Aguilera ran into trouble.  Chili Davis hit a solo homer and the lead was back to a single run.

Roger McDowell relieved Aguilera, but he didn’t fare much better.  In the top of the eighth, Will Clark doubled home Dan Gladden and just like that, the game was tied.  Jesse Orosco came in to relieve McDowell in the ninth, and he got the Giants to go down quietly.  Giants’ reliver Greg Minton did the same with the Mets.

In the top of the tenth, the Giants didn’t waste much time getting on the board.  Robby Thompson hit a solo homerun to put the Giants up 7-6.  Orosco later gave up a double and a walk in the inning, but he got out of the jam by getting Bob Brenly to ground out.

In the bottom of the tenth, Keith Hernandez led off with a single.  Gary Carter flew out to right field, and then Mitchell singled and Hernandez moved to second.  Reliever Juan Berenguer threw a wild pitch and each base runner moved up.  Howard Johnson drew a walk to load up the bases, and then Ray Knight hit a sac. fly that scored Hernandez and tied up the game.  Santana then reached on an error by shortstop Jose Uribe’s error and Mitchell scored the game winning run.
