Mets 8, Dodgers 1 (28-11)
It’s hard to believe the Mets were actually down in this game. Ron Darling gave up a solo homerun to Ken Landreaux in the top of the first to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. The Mets tied the game up in the fourth on Gary Carter’s sac. fly.
In the sixth, the Mets busted the game open. Len Dykstra led off with a single, then scored on Wally Backman’s double. Keith Hernandez singled to put runners at the corners, and then Gary Carter singled home Backman. Danny Heep singled to make it five straight hits to load the bases.
Tom Niedenfuer came in to relieve Bob Welch, but that didn’t stop the damage because George Foster hit a grand slam to put the Mets up 6-1. The Mets actually loaded the bases up again but Niedenfuer was replaced by Ed Vande Berg and he managed to get out of the inning without any further damage.
Keith Hernandez hit a solo homer in the seventh to add insult to injury. Ron Darling was phenomonal and he went the distance and held the Dodgers to one run on five hits and he struck out twelve.
