The early season struggles of the New York Mets continued Wednesday as C Chris Iannetta homered in the 10th inning, helping the Colorado Rockies win 6-5 at Coors Field in Denver. Starter Jon Niese battled for 5 innings but was hurt by a 3 run homer from Rockies RF Ryan Spilborghs in the 3rd. New York trailed 5-3 heading into the 8th but rallied for single runs in that frame and the 9th vs the Colorado bullpen. RF Jeff Francoeur and 3B David Wright homered for the Mets while C Rod Barajas had 2 hits. Iannetta had 3 hits for the Rockies while veteran 1B Todd Helton and starting pitcher Aaron Cook added 2 hits apiece. This tough loss dropped New York to 2-6 and they have lost 4 straight.
RISP:RIP: The Mets are now 12 for 72(.167) with runners in scoring position.
JUMBO JEFF: Francoeur has a hit in every Mets game and also has seven extra-base hits.
GLOVE GOOD: The club has not allowed an unearned run all season.
ROCKY ROCKIES: Atypical game for Colorado with some sloppy fielding, (3 errrors in big spots) hi-lighted by Iannetta’s throwing error in the 9th to help the Mets tie.
ROOKIE UNWELCOME: Iannetta’s game winner came at the expense of promising rookie Jenrry Mejia. Better days ahead for both the talented righty and the Mets.
JUST OK JON: Mets starter Jon Niese battled hard vs one of the better teams in the game. Over 5 innings, he allowed 9 hits and 5 runs(Earned) while striking out 2 and walking 1. The southpaw tossed 99 pitches(61 strikes) and was 50/50 on 1st pitch strikes(13/26).
