Mets 5, Giants 2 (88-43)
It didn’t take long for the Mets get to get back to winning as they topped the Giants with a big eighth inning rally. It was the Mets twelth win in fourteen games.
The Mets got on the board early when Gary Carter singled home Wally Backman in the first inning. They added another run in the fourth on Rafael Santana’s RBI single, but the Giants finally got on the board and tied the game up in the sixth with two runs off of starter Sid Fernandez.
Neither team scored until the Mets came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Wally Backman led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on Keith Hernandez’s ground out. Gary Carter was intentionally walked before Mookie Wilson drove home the go ahead run with a single. Danny Heep drew a walk to load the bases, and then Howard Johnson opened the game with a two run single to make it 5-2.
Roger McDowell walked a batter in the ninth but the Giants never really threated. He got the win an improved to 13-7. Sid Fernandez struck out a season high fourteen batters in seven innings of work.
