Dodgers 4, Mets 3 (22-8)
The Dodgers handed the Mets their third loss in four games in a dramatic eleven inning affair. The Mets jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first when both Keith Hernandez and Darryl Strawberry scored on third baseman Bill Madlock’s error. The Dodgers answered in the bottom of the sixth with three unearned runs off of starter Dwight Gooden.
With the score 3-2, the Mets tied the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI double for Darryl Strawberry. Neither team scored in the eight or ninth, and the game went into extra frames.
Jesse Orosco finally gave up the game winning run in the eleventh on Bill Russell’s RBI bunt single. Dwight Gooden had a solid game go to waste as he gave up the three runs (all unearned) on seven hits and had seven strikeouts in eight innings of work. Orel Hershiser was just as good. He went nine and gave up three runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out ten.
