The Mets came within one win of tying the team’s record 100 wins set back in 1969 by topping the Cardinals. Dwight Gooden was impressive with his complete game two hitter. He did give up two runs (one earned) and improved to 16-6.
Darryl Strawberry hit his 22nd homerun of the season and Wally Backman hit his first in the win. Rafael Santana drove in two runs.
