From Tom Seaver to Dwight Gooden to Carlos Beltran, A look at the New York Mets past, present and future.

The Wall Street Journal reported the Mets are preparing to offer 3B David Wright a long term extension during this season, possibly this summer according to a May 13th article. The team holds a $16 million option on Wright for 2013 and Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson told Brian Costa from the WSJ that #5 will not be traded at the deadline as many fans have feared. Wright is having a huge year (.400, 4 home runs, 21 rbi, 1.080 OPS) and has also stepped up in more of leadership role with a very young ball club around him. As I said preseason, extending Wright should be a top priority and goal #1 for the remainder of the season.
BRILLIANT BYRDAK:Situational lefty Tim Byrdak(2-0,3.48, 0.87 WHIP, .171 Opponents batting average) has been a vital cog to the Mets rebuilt bullpen and has been called upon to get some huge outs by Manager Terry Collins. With 20 appearances in the first 33 games, he is on pace to appear in 98 games and would break the club appearance record. The veteran is tied for 3rd in all of MLB with 8 holds(Basically getting outs to set up the closer for the 9th) and has been a godsend for a relief corps that has been up and down in the first 6 weeks.
INJURY UPDATES: LF Jason Bay(Left rib) will be examined this week at Citi Field after being placed on the DL April 24th. He has limited to riding a stationary bike. Meanwhile, SS Ruben Tejada is rehabbing his strained right quad in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Ronny Cedeno has taken over as the everyday SS in his place, as planned. No further update on C Josh Thole but he does not appear to be a good bet to return soon after his 7 day Concussion DL stint is over.
FLU BUG: 1B Ike Davis, LHSP Jon Niese and 3B Coach Tim Teufel are the latest Mets to be infected by the Flu. Davis did not start Sunday May 13th and the team was looking into whether he was suffering from food poisoning. The team moved Daniel Murphy to 1B for the first time in 2012 with Jordany Valdespin manning 2B in Murphy’s place. Teufel also sat out Sunday’s contest with Bench Coach Bob Geren taking over in the coaching box. RF Lucas Duda missed three games and lost 10 pounds earlier this month while back up C Mike Nickeas was so sick that the team told him to stay away from the ballpark. P Chris Schwinden also was ill when he was up with the big club.
The New York Mets continue to play solid baseball despite being down 3 everyday players and stand at 18-13 on the year as off May 10th. The team just swept the 5 time defending NL East Champion Philadelphia Phillies in Pennsylvania for the the 1st time since 2006 and have won 5 of 6 overall. Two trends have carried them early in the season, the offensive depth and bounce back of the club. The Mets have a major league high 11 comeback wins(two in the Phillies series) and consistently do major damage with two outs. The starting pitchers have not been great but they keep the team in the game while pitching coach Dan Warthen and Manager Terry Collins have done a great job with the rebuilt bullpen. I usually do not like to make assessments before June 1st but I believe the 2012 New York Mets can and should compete for a postseason birth. This is a tough, resilient bunch that has taken on the personality of their skipper and team leader(3b David Wright), they grind and battle for 27 outs. More importantly to Mets fans, this is a group that is both easy to watch and root for. Lets look at some important news stories regarding the club.
Outfield: Rookie Kirk Nieuwenhuis(.304,2 homers,10 rbi, 16 runs) has been outstanding since joining the team in game 2 with both his bat and glove. With the return of CF Andres Torres, the rookie has moved to LF and continued to contribute. Torres, who is an excellent defensive player, has hit .367 with a homer, 7 rbi and 6 runs in 8 games since coming off the DL. He has taken to the Mets patient plate approach and Collins has moved both around the lineup depending on the matchups. RF Lucas Duda has been consistent and provided power(4 homers, 16 rbi) from corner outfield spot. Collins might have some interesting lineups when regular LF Jason Bay returns from his rib injury.
Injury Bug: Besides the injury to Bay, the team has lost two of their 2nd year players to injury in the last week. SS Ruben Tejada(.305,8 rbi, 14 runs), who was doing a splendid job taking over for the departed Jose Reyes, was placed on the DL May 7th with a strained right quad. Meanwhile, C Josh Thole(.284,homer, 7 rbi) suffered a concussion after a collision at home plate May 7th and was placed on the New seven-day DL created by MLB for concussion injuries. If Thole, who still has some dizziness issues, is not improved after the 7 days, he can be placed on another seven-day DL or he can go on the regular 15-day list. These are both big losses and important members of the club heading forward but the team has depth at both spots- Justin Turner and prospect Jordany Valdespin can play SS while back up C Mike Nickeas and veteran Rob Johnson will fill in short term. Meanwhile Collins would like 7 year major leaguer Ronny Cedeno(Knee tendinitis) to take over at SS when he comes off the DL sometime in the next week. He would allow Turner and Valdespin to stay in their usual super sub roles and give The Mets weapons off the bench. Ideally, Cedeno will start until Tejada returns.
Jordany’s Big Night: Valdespin’s first major league hit was both memorable and important. The hit was a game winning three run homer off of Phillies all star closer Jonathan Papelbon in the Met’s 5-2 win over Philadelphia May 7th. Prior to the at bat, he was 0 for 6. The story gets better. The ball ended up in the hands of a 8 year old boy who is a big Phillies fan. The young fan, Andrew Wixted, contacted the Mets and returned the ball to the team. The 24 year old rookie now has a present to give his Mother on Mother’s Day. Good job, Jordany and even better job, Andrew!
Pelfrey’s rotation spot: When the team lost RHSP Mike Pelfrey to season ending elbow surgery, the team’s lack of starting pitching depth was exposed. Call up Chris Schwinden struggled, was sent back to Triple A and Collins decided to give long time veteran Miguel Batista a shot to fill the rotation. After struggling in his first start May 1(2 and two third innnings, 3 hits, run, 4 walks at Houston) he rallied May 8th vs the Phillies(5 and a third innings, 8 hits, 4 runs(2 earned), 2 walks) to help the Mets win. Batista will get at least one more start with RHP Chris Young(Shoulder) just starting minor league rehab and minor leaguers such as Jeremy Hefner, Jenrry Mejia, Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler not being major league ready at present date. This is an issue that fans need to focus on, keep track of how the team does in these starts. If this team does not make the playoffs, this might be a big reason why.
Murphy’s improvement: Most followers of the Mets knew 2B Daniel Murphy could hit but many thought he was a glorified DH playing in the National League. However, he we have seen a marked improvement in his play defensively at 2nd base. I believe the addition of Tim Teufel to the coaching staff, a member of the 1986 World Champions, has helped Murphy tremendously. The former Triple A manager was an excellent defensive 2B and has tutored Murphy, who is a known worker. Daniel almost makes a hi-light type play nightly now and Teufel’s influence cannot be understated.
The New York Mets recipe for success continues to produce wins as the combination of solid pitching and contributions from the entire roster has them winners of 5 of 6 and carrying a 13-9 record as April draws to a close. The franchise’s face, 3B David Wright, became the team’s all time rbi leader mid week and the team carried a home series sweep of the division rival Miami Marlins into Colorado to face the Rockies. The Mets took 2 of 3 in the thrilling weekend set. However, the news was not all good. RHSP Mike Pelfrey is gone for the season with an elbow injury(torn UCL) in his pitching arm that will require he go under the knife. The tall righty will have Tommy John Surgery Tuesday May 1st after meeting with famed sports surgeon Dr. James Andrew’s Monday in Alabama.
WRIGHT IS ONE: Congratulations to Wright for becoming the franchise leader in rbi April 25th when he hit a two run homer in a 5-1 victory. The game winning shot put him at 735 rbi in a Mets uniform as he surpasses Met legend Darryl Strawberry(1983-1990) at 733. When you consider Wright is not even 30 years old(Born in 1982, December birthday), he should SHATTER this mark.
RESHAPED OUTFIELD: CF Andres Torres, who re-injured his calf in the season opener, rejoined the team in Houston and started tonight’s game in CenterField. Manager Terry Collins elected to move red hot rookie Kirk Nieuwenhuis(.316 batting average, great defense) to Left field with Jason Bay(rib) on the DL. Lucas Duda, who was out of the lineup with the flu, will remain in Right when he is healthy.
NEW LINEUP: With Torres back, Collins would like to move forward with this batting order for the time being:
1- Niewenhuis
2- SS Ruben Tejada
3- 2B Daniel Murphy
4- Wright
5- 1B Ike Davis
6- Duda
7- Torres
8- C Josh Thole
9- Pitcher
JUMBO JOSH: The Mets back stop has been great from day one and has a hit in every start except 3. The 3rd year major leaguer is hitting .322 with an .852 OPS in 20 games. He also hit his 1st homer since August 15th, 2011 in the win at Colorado April 29th.
METS NOTES: Mets took 2 of 3 in Denver but the Rockies win Friday night April 27th was memorable. They trailed 6-2 heading into the bottom of the 6 and plated 11 runs added by 4 errors. Mets got all of their poor play out of their system in one inning… OF-INF Scott Hairston became the 10th Met in their history to hit for the cycle in that loss. Collins has used this versatile performer as a weapon of the bench particularly vs lefties. He joins OF Mike Baxter to give the Mets a dangerous tandem late in games…. Mets did something I have never seen before in a 2-1 win over the Miami Marlins April 24th. Trailing 1-0 in the 7th inning, they drew 4 straight two out walks from 4 different pitchers to tie the game!!! To make it even more historic, they pitchers went righty, lefty, righty, lefty!!!!!!!…. During the Marlins series, Collins approached Mets chief Operating officer Jeff Wilpon and told him how proud he should be of the club’s farm system and scouts. When ex Met Jose Reyes led off the game vs LHP Jon Niese, every player on the field was drafted or signed by New York when they got their start in pro ball.
The New York Mets rallied to defeat the division rival Miami Marlins Tuesday night at Citi Field 2-1 in game that had so many individual positives I have to list them. 1- Johan Santana looked like Johan Santana in both performance and results- over 6 and 2 third innings he was in complete control and made the Marlins hitters look feeble, striking out 11 and walking 2 while allowing 3 hits and run. 2- Rookie CF Kirk Niewenhuis continues to hit(.327 in 16 games with 2 homers and 4 rbi) and robbed ex-Met Jose Reyes of an extra base hit in the games 1st at bat. The kid just has the look of a player. And do not underestimate how big a catch that was for this team heading forward. After the Mets made a decision to let Reyes leave, you do not want him coming back and running all over Citi Field. HUGE psychological lift for the team. 3- The team somehow beat the Marlins bullpen in the 7th(4 straight two out walks by 4 different pitchers,Has to be a ML record?) then RF Lucas Duda smoked a come backer that hit Miami reliever Edwin Mujica for the winning run in the 8th. Niewenhuis, 2B Daniel Murphy and Duda had huge hits during the 8th inning rally and it is definitely fun to see the kids contributing. 4- Terry Collins. If you read my blog, you know I love having this guy in our dugout. He makes tough decisions, treats each player with respect and gives them a role. He also plays for today and goes by how the team or player is performing. He pinch hit for a struggling Ike Davis(.131,3 homers,7 rbi) during the 7th inning rally. It worked out because INF Justin Turner drew a walk but the key was what Collins said POST GAME. Ike is going to hit, Ike is a player, we need Ike. VERY cool.Type of guy you would want in fox hole with you. 5- The Bullpen- Key set up man Jon Rauch has not allowed a run all season and has three wins. The bigger story out of this win was the dominant 9th inning from Frank Francisco, who had tough week and was yanked from save situation April 21st by Collins after struggling for about a 5 day period. Terry backed him saying publicly that he was the closer and would step up. Frankie did with his 4th save in as many opportunities.
The win puts the Mets at 9-8 on the season and could not come at a better time. Today the team lost LF Jason Bay(.240, 3 homers,5 rbi) and RHSP Mike Pelfrey(0-0,2.29 in 3 starts) to the 15 day DL and Pelfrey’s injury could be season ending according to numerous reports. The big righty, who has looked great early in the season, has a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. Pelfrey is seeking a 2nd opinion but the Mets are preparing to lose him to season ending elbow surgery. Just awful news. Bay has a fractured rib in his left side after diving for a ball during Monday’s doubleheader. He will be on the DL indefinitely. The team also placed utility infielder Ronny Cedeno on the list April 23rd with left side strain. With these three recent moves, the Mets have recalled INF Zach Lutz(who struck out as pinch hitter in his ML debut tonight), 2B Jordany Valdespin and LHP Robert Carson. How the team proceeds with both the LF and rotation spot will be key heading forward. CF Andres Torres is going to start rehab games April 24th and will rejoin the team for the series vs the Astros in Houston starting Monday barring any setbacks. Super subs Scott Hairston, Mike Baxter and Valdespin could fill in til Torres returns. The team will have to make a move to replace Pelfrey in the rotation with his next scheduled start this Friday in Colorado against the Rockies. Minor leaguer Chris Schwinden name has been mentioned to fill that role.
The New York Mets strong start(6-3 vs three solid divisional rivals) has illustrated the offseason work of both the players, on field management and front office. With the team fielding 7 home grown fielders on most nights as well as several key members of the pitching staff also being drafted by the club, fans see a plan and development. The rebuilt bullpen has been outstanding while promising young outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis has fit nicely in place of injured CF Andres Torres. The offense has spotty at times(26 out of 30 major league teams in runs) but the Mets put the bat on the ball(13th in average and 9th in on base). Keep in mind star 3B David Wright missed the final two games of the home stand with the well documented right pinkie issue and the team scored 2 runs combined in those contests. In the 7 games Wright has started at 3B, NY scored 1,4,7,4,5,5 and 2 runs(4 per game).
The pitching has been outstanding on all levels since Day 1 and the starting rotation has led the way. The big three of LHPs Johan Santana(0-1,0.90 ERA,1.20 WHIP), Jon Niese(2-0,2.13,0.95) and Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey(2-0,2.08,1.46) set the tone and kept the team in all of their starts. Sophomore RH Dillon Gee(0-1,5.06) has only one start but did not pitch poorly vs the Nationals at Citi Field. The biggest positive for Mets fans regarding the starting pitching? Big righty Mike Pelfrey’s first two starts (0-0,3.09,1.80). After a tough 2011 campaign(7-13,4.74), the 7 year major leaguer looks to be close to regaining his strong 2010 numbers(15-9,3.66,1.47). As good as the rotation has been, the bullpen has been just as strong if not better. Lefty specialist Tim Byrdak, new closer Frank Francisco(3 saves) and giant righty Jon Rauch(no hits in 5 and 2 third innings) have not allowed an earned run. Meanwhile, Manager Terry Collins seems to be looking for ways to use super talented righty Bobby Parnell’s amazing arm in late inning situations and so far(1.80 ERA,6 Ks in 5 innings) the youngster seems to be rewarding the skipper’s confidence. No doubt about it, the pitching(2.48 team ERA, 3rd best in the sport) has been the driving force behind the start.
BAY BACK:LF Jason Bay will be back in the lineup Monday after he missed Sunday’s game with a jammed right middle finger. He was available to pinch hit in the game but Collins gave the slow starting LF(.185, 1 homer, 3 rbi in 27 at bats) a full day off.
The New York Mets got an unexpected boost Saturday when star 3B David Wright(Broken right pinkie) was medically cleared to play then homered on the first pitch he saw in Saturday’s 5-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Pennsylvania. Wright took batting practice earlier in the day, had no issues and was inserted into the lineup. Just having their #3 hitter and team leader escape a stint on the disabled list seemed to energize the Mets and they continued their strong April. The win puts NY at 6-2 on the year, their best start since 2006 when they won the National League East and advanced to the NLCS.
3B David Wright’s right pinky remains swollen and he remains unable to swing a bat. If Wright does not improve Saturday, the team will place their franchise face on the DL. Manager Terry Collins plans on moving starting 2B Daniel Murphy to third if Wright is out for an extended period of time. #5 cannot even swing a bat after jamming the finger diving back into first base to avoid a pick off Tuesday.
The New York Mets promising start to the 2012 baseball season has been dealt a major blow on Tuesday when the team’s franchise player 3b David Wright was diagnosed with a small fracture in the middle joint of his right pinky finger. The 3B jammed the joint in Monday night’s game when he tagged 1B on a pick off move. He was out of the lineup tonight and will more than likely miss Wednesday’s matinee as well. The finger has been placed in splint and the Mets will have more answers on a time frame for his return after they get a report back from a hand specialist Wednesday. Best case scenario is the injury improves with rest and he suits up Friday. However, SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt reported during the Tuesday night telecast that Wright could not even grip a bat pre game. Unfortunately, the Mets need to plan on not having their superstar and defacto captain heading forward. Wright was hitting .583 with a homer and 4 rbi in the first 4 Mets games- all wins- and remains 4 rbi short of tying Darryl Stawberry’s club record 733 rbi. Last season, he played for about a month with a serious stress fracture in his back and ended up missing over 50 games while hitting a career low .226. The Mets and Manager Terry Collins did the right thing tonight sitting him and should proceed with caution heading forward. Crushing news in the season’s early days, let hope for a positive medical report in the coming days. Frankly as both a fan and reporter of the Mets news, I am tired of sounding like I work for webmd.com.
The New York Mets could not ask for a better start to open 2012 as they combined great starting pitching, solid offense and a remade bullpen to sweep the hated division rival Atlanta Braves in a 3 game series to kick off the season at Citi field. For a team that has had its share of negative press and on field performance, this type of start was vital and hopefully sets the tone for what could be a surprising year. Lets take a look at the reasons for the 1st place Mets success in the 1st 3 contests.
BRILLIANT STARTING PITCHING: The 3 starters- LHs Johan Santana, Jon Niese and RH knuckleballer R.A. Dickey all pitched great and did so in different ways. Santana, who had not pitched in the majors since September 2010, allowed two hits and no runs over 5 innings in the home opener April 5th. He was economical, using 84 pitches and looked healthy. Dickey battled all day and did not have a grade “A” knuckleball but gave the team 6 workman like innings. He allowed 5 hits and 2 runs(2 run shot to Braves LF Martin Prado) while striking out 3 and walking 4. Niese gave up the most runs of the 3 starters but he was also the most impressive. The lefty carried a no hitter into the 7th after walking 4 in the first 2 innings, retiring 14 batters in a row. He K-ed 7 and allowed 4 runs on two hits over 6 plus innings.
TIMELY OFFENSE: The lineup has made starters work and youngsters RF Lucas Duda(.273,2 home runs Saturday), 2B Daniel Murphy(.385, 3 doubles, 2 rbi) and SS Ruben Tejada(.364, 2 doubles,2 rbi, .462 On base) have been big contributors early on. Meanwhile, franchise face David Wright is off to a scorching start(.667, homer, 3 rbi, 3 walks) and has taken a more of a leadership role early on. He helped calm down 1B Ike Davis Saturday after the slugger disagreed with a umpire’s strike zone. Wright was also seen pumping up Niese on the mound after the youngster lost his no hit bid. Now more than ever, this is Wright’s team and he seems to sense it.
IMPROVED BULLPEN: Mets GM Sandy Alderson made several moves in the offseason to augment what was a major weakness in 2011 and the trades-signings had immediate payoff. New closer Frank Francisco saved all 3 wins, shaking off a rough spring. Big Jon Rauch(6’11) did not allow a hit in 2 innings while trade acquisition Ramon Ramirez chipped in an inning and a third in the home opener. Meanwhile, situational lefty Tim Byrdak got huge outs in games 1 and 3 after having knee surgery in spring training. Gutty performance by the veteran. Staff holdovers Bobby Parnell(1 inning, K) and Manny Acosta(Gave up the only run the pen has allowed on a home run to Braves all star C Brian McCann Sunday) have also pitched well. This group looks to have staying power and is vital to the team’s success long term.
HOME GROWN TALENT:When the Mets took the field Saturday, the team had 7 of the 8 position players on the field come thru the Mets farm system: Davis, Murphy, Tejada, Wright, C Josh Thole, Duda and new CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis all played in the NY minor league system. When you consider that even LF Jason Bay was Mets property early in his career, that is amazing achievement! Many people have criticized former Mets GM Omar Minaya but he did some good things here with this team and many of the current players on this roster are here due to his work.
MORE METS NEWS: Niewenhuis, one of the team’s top prospects, was recalled from Triple A after starting CF Andres Torres re-injured his left calf in the opener. Torres missed two weeks in the spring with the same injury and will rehab at the Mets minor league facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Niewenhuis is a very good defensive player who can hit at either the bottom or top of the lineup but has battled injuries over the past 2 seasons. Look for the rookie to play the majority of games in center with Scott Hairston filling in from time to time.
BAD BRAVES:The Braves had a catastrophic ending to their 2011 campaign, losing out on the wild card on the last day of the regular season after playing awful in the month of September. Things did not get off to good start and this lineup misses future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones desperately. Even on bad knees, the switch hitter stabilizes this lineup and gives them a huge veteran presence. This is an average offense with him and the drop off without Jones is very noticeable when you watch Atlanta for 3 days. A positive? RF Jason Heyward had some good at bats in the series and seems ready to put the sophomore slump of 2011 behind him. The staff will also improve when RHSP Tim Hudson(off season back surgery) rejoins the rotation near the end of April. The veteran had a rehab start Sunday April 8th and had no issues over 3 innings. The Braves have to survive this first Month and not over tax their deep and talented bullpen, a group that was running on fumes late in 2011. Could be a long year in Atlanta.
The Mets signed one of their top young players to a 5 year extension today and this has to be viewed as a massive positive for a fan base that has been battered and bruised since losing game 7 of the NLCS in 2006. The club and LHP Jon Niese inked a 5 year, $25 million dollar extension that includes two option years that could add an additional $21 million in 2017 and 2018. For a team that has been in financial jail, this contract and the recent settlement in the Bernie Madoff case seem to be the start of the Mets being about the on field product and less about the bottom line. Locking up the lefty shows the team will take care of their own home grown talent and after losing star shortstop Jose Reyes to the Miami Marlins in free agency, vital for both the on field product and team perception throughout the baseball world. The club’s priority heading forward must be signing or trading franchise face, 3b David Wright. He is is either the leader of the rebuilding or a piece to speed up the process. His situation will be one to monitor throughout the season.
CF Andres Torres(calf) and LHRP Tim Byrak(knee surgery) both are healthy and made the final roster breaking camp. LHRP Daniel Herrera and OF Vinny Rottino were sent to Triple A when the two veterans were medically cleared and played well in a game April 3rd. Meanwhile, Relievers Pedro Beato and D.J. Carrasco will remain in Port St. Lucie to continue their rehab from injuries, they should be ready to go by May, at the latest. New closer Frank Francisco is good to go after dealing with a knee issue most of the spring. Francisco and fellow off season bullpen acquisitions Jon Rauch and Ramon Ramirez should greatly improve the Mets pen in 2012.
Season expectations? First off, I think getting the Madoff situation out of the way and off the back of the Papers is a huge check mark for the entire organization. On the field, I think the team will be better pitching wise with the return of Johan Santana being the key. Santana at 75% allows the rotation to be properly slotted and gives the club 5 solid major league starters. I like Niese, R.A. Dickey and Dillon Gee a lot. They are not Sandy Koufax but they are tough and keep the team in games. The bullpen additions and returnee Bobby Parnell are the key late inning questions. Parnell has as much talent as anyone and has shown raw ability, bringing it from game 1 to 162 is the difference from this team winning 85 games instead of 75.
Lineup wise, 4 people are going to greatly determine how many runs this team scores. Obviously Wright playing 150+ games is a key but the two corner outfielders, veteran LF Jason Bay and RF Lucas Duda, must hit and provide protection in the middle of the order. Bay had a tough spring and as someone who covered his career in Pittsburgh and regularly watches Boston Red Sox games, I am astounded. This guy can play plus he performed under pressure in the AL East and is a great team guy. Pulling for Bay but you have to wonder if he is done. I think Duda will hit and become a huge fan favorite. Ideally, if these two hit 50 home runs between them, I would be very happy. 1B Ike Davis has looked great after missing most of the 2011 with a fluky ankle injury. He seems ok after being diagnosed with Valley Fever early in spring training and remains a good bet to hit 25-30 home runs.
I have not been overly concerned about the Reyes situation and I can say this for several reasons. He was great in 2011 and is a tremendous talent, a huge loss for New York and the Mets. But he is reliant on his legs, has had numerous injuries to his lower half and father time is undefeated in the non-PED-steroid era. He was not worth that deal and the Marlins will live to regret it. Ask any of your Red Sox fan friends how they feel about the long term deal the team gave speedy Carl Crawford. Prepare to hear a lot of four letter words after you utter his name. Ruben Tejada is a good young player who can play defense and hit .270ish. You can win with this type of player if the everyone else does there job.
I do believe the Mets have a better team than 2011 but the entire division is deep and talented. Outside of the Phillies, who have been the class of the NL East since 2007, every team has improved. The Phillies have two stars hurting(2b Chase Utley and 1B Ryan Howard) but have the best rotation in the NL and a winning culture. The Braves are not far behind and boast an incredible bullpen. The Miami Marlins spent money on a new manager(Ozzie Guillen), starting pitcher(Mark Buehrle), SS(Reyes) and closer(Heath Bell) in the offseason and could win 90 games. The sleeping giant of this division are the Washington Nationals. This team has excellent young pitching and more offense than you think. If Stephen Strasburg is 75% healthy, this team could be a monster. That leaves the Mets. I think they could win anywhere from 75 to 85 games. Terry Collins will have them battle and compete hard but they are 2-3 years away from being a serious contender. The incredible NL East is not a good place to be rebuilding but the Mets are. However, recent news and signings give fans in Flushing hope for the future. That is reason enough to watch.

As the New York Mets enter the final week of spring training they are dealing with some minor health issues with 6 to 8 players including franchise player 3B David Wright and ace lefty Johan Santana. Reports on both have been positive while the club has been cautious not to overwork 1B Ike Davis(Valley Fever, ankle injury from 2011) in camp. The team will use the last few days of camp to get everyone as healthy as possible and open the season at Citi Field vs the hated Atlanta Braves Thursday April 5th.
MEDICAL UPDATES: Wright appears close to returning from his oblique strain and took live batting practice Sunday March 25th, the team will determine early Monday morning when he will play in exhibition games. He could be in live action as early as today and should be in the lineup opening day barring any set backs. INF-OF Scott Hairston is also close and took BP Sunday as well. An almost identical diagnosis to Wright, he appears good to go. CF Andres Torres appears to have avoided a major injury with his right calf and is improving according to Mets skipper Terry Collins. Meanwhile, ace Johan Santana has really had a strong last 2 weeks of camp and will throw 90-95 pitches Monday vs the Cardinals.
FINAL ROSTER: The team has had some bumps and bruises to some relievers and outfielders specifically and probably has 3-4 spots up for grabs. LHRP Tim Brydak continues to recover from his early camp knee surgery but will more than likely not be available til mid April at the earliest. Thus, a lefty specialist spot appears to be down to LHP Danny Herrera and Single-A LHP Josh Edgin. The health of Torres and LF Jason Bay(hit in the right hand by a pitch March 25th, no update as I type) will impact any OF moves. Mike Baxter and Matt den Dekker can play center and have had strong camps. Mets prospect Kirk Nieuwenhuis strained an oblique in early March and lost an opportunity to possibly make this team with a solid spring. Meanwhile, righty reliever Pedro Beato(strained rotator cuff) is a good bet to open the year on 15 day disabled list.
Mark down March 19,2012 on your calendar if you are a fan of the New York Mets. The franchise and its leadership scored their first major victory since 2006 today. Owner Fred Wilpon and his family reached a financial settlement with the trustee in the Bernard Madoff ponzi sheme case and all indicators mark this as positive for the franchise heading forward. I am not a financial reporter but let me explain the base facts here. Mr. Wilpon and his partners were being sued by a group of investors Madoff defrauded and these victims claimed the Wilpon group knew about the scheme. They were looking to collect $386 million in court case that was due to start this week, the original lawsuit asked for $1 billion. After todays settlement, the most the Mets ownership will have to pay is $162 Million and they do not have to start payments until 2016 or 2017. Later this evening, the Mets announced they completed the sale of 12 minority ownership shares for $20 million apiece with the cash going to offset debts occurred during this trying financial situation. All reports have the Wilpon’s being in strong position moving forward due to the fact that they signed off on the settlement and would not do so if they believed it would jeopardize their ownership of the Mets. Lets hope this is the last time I am talking about this!!!! Or anything not on field related!!!!
Johan Progressing- The Mets ace lefty continues to build arm strength and build towards being on the mound in April after missing all of 2011 after undergoing surgery on his throwing shoulder late in 2010. He was hit hard in his 3rd start(4 hits, 5 runs(4 earned) in 2 and 2/3 innings vs. the Detroit Tigers) but has otherwise looked solid and is a good bet to be on the mound on Opening day. Santana threw 65 pitches(44 for strikes) and touched 92 on the gun.
Mash Unit- The Mets have two important players who are currently battling injury- Franchise face and 3B David Wright(Left Abdominal tear) and Lefty relief specialist Tim Byrdak(Torn meniscus in left knee) are questionable for opening day. Byrdak underwent surgery on March 13 but is now walking normally and is pushing to make the season opening roster. That type of injury usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to heal. Wright hit off a tee and swung at soft toss March 18th. #5 also believes he will be ready for the Opening Day April 5th but is being careful with an injury that can reoccur if you are not careful with it.
Rotation Roundup: RHSP Mike Pelfrey has been hit hard in the spring(0-2,14.90 ERA in 9 and 2/3 innings), allowing 20 hits and 16 runs in less than 10 innings. The ground ball machine has allowed an amazing 4 homer runs. His 3rd start vs the Houston Astros was particularily painful to watch as he gave up 8 hits and runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. LHSP Jon Niese ,however, has been impressive and seems poised for a big year. He is 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA in 3 starts(10 and a third innings) and has K-ed 9 while walking 1.
The Wilpon family has been ordered to pay $83.3 million to the trustee in the civil suit brought against the Mets owners in the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme. A Judge ruled that principal owner Fred Wilpon must stand trial March 19th and the remaining $303 million in the original lawsuit filed by trustee Irving Picard is at stake in these hearings. Wilpon and fellow Mets owner Saul Katz are accused of negligence in their dealings with Madoff, who defrauded his clients out of an estimated $36 billion in one of the largest financial frauds in U.S. History. The Mets owners claim they were Madoff victims and had $500 million invested when his scheme was uncovered by law enforcement. The owners perilous financial situation has them seeking minority investors to raise up to $200 million in 10 limited partner shares.
The timing of this trial could not come at worse time for Mets fans. The clubs revenues are down drastically and the team has been a downward spiral since losing in Game 7 of the 2006 National League Championship series. The Mets claim they lost $70 million in 2011 and $51 million in 2010 and recent moves have the team’s on field payroll at $85 million after standing at $119 in 2010.A recent report in New York Newsday published the financial statements of the Queens Ballpark company,a Mets subsidiary that leases Citi Field, for 2011. Ticket revenue dropped 21%, concessions 20% while ball park attendance also declined from 2.55 million to 2.35. MLB should look long and hard at doing something to either make the Wilpons sell the team or bail them out. This is a business but a bad financial situation that has nothing to do with baseball is now hurting baseball and New York Mets fans. That is not good for the business of baseball. It might be approaching a time where Commissioner Bud Selig and his staff must take control ala the recent Los Angeles Dodgers-Frank McCourt fiasco.
For once, I would like to write some reports regarding the New York Mets and have it not be about injuries, fevers and ponzi schemes. This will not be one of those days. Promising 1B Ike Davis, who missed most of 2011 with a serious ankle injury, appears to have contracted Valley Fever, a condition that causes extreme fatigue when you are not rested properly or run down. The Fever cost former Arizona Diamondbacks player Conor Jackson to miss most of the 2009 season. Symptoms include cough, chest pains, chills and shortness of breath. It even ended the career of Joe Vavra, who was a teammate of Mets manager Terry Collins, when they played together in the Los Angeles Dodgers system. While the diagnosis has not been confirmed, the team is approaching Davis with caution and closely monitoring their slugging 1B. Collins has pledged to give rest and days off as needed. So far the Mets have no indication that Davis will miss anytime in the regular season. Ike has not missed an drills so far in camp.
Meanwhile, the teams franchise player 3B David Wright has a minor left side issue and will not play in the team’s first two preseason games as a precautionary measure. After INF-OF Scott Hairston strained an oblique Saturday, the team is preceding with caution here. Hairston and Minor League 2B Reese Havens(Back) are scheduled to receive cortisone injections this Monday, March 5th.
As the 2012 New York Mets open spring training, the team has several issues that need to be resolved in camp. The health of stars– LHSP Johan Santana(shoulder) and 1B Ike Davis(ankle) has to top the list. If these two can contribute, the Mets are greatly improved. One of the weaknesses of the 2011 club was the bullpen and General Manager Sandy Alderson added 3 new veterans to the unit via trade or signing in Jon Rauch, Ramon Ramirez and Frank Francisco. The 2nd base position is clearly Daniel Murphy’s job to win or lose but serious knee injuries in the previous 2 campaigns make his status a question mark as well. Shortstop became an issue when the team lost 2011 National League batting champion Jose Reyes to division rival Miami via free agency but again, the Mets have a strong internal option in INF Rueben Tejada. Lets look more in depth to these camp battles.
1- Team Health- Obviously a key to any teams success but the Mets in recent years have been snake bit with the injury bug, often to star players. A return of LHSP Johan Santana(Late 2010 shoulder surgery, did not pitch in the ML in 2011) would give NY 5 solid starters while balancing out the rotation(2 lefties with 3 right handers). Slugging 1B Ike Davis was off to tremendous start(.302,7 home runs, 25 rbi in 36 games) in 2011 before brutal ankle injury felled him for the season in May. Slotting him in the cleanup spot should give the Mets a presentable 3-4-5 combination with 3B David Wright, Davis and LF Jason Bay. Making this group even more intriguing is fact that they go righty, lefty, righty which presents problems for the opposition managers when using match up relievers late in games. Wright, who looks great in camp, also missed 60 games in 2011 with a broken bone in his back and is primed for a big year in Queens. Whether he ends the season in Flushing is another issue but with the Citi Field fences moving in and appearing to be more hitter friendly, look for #5 to put up some monster numbers.
2- Rebuilt Relief- This unit was up and down in 2011 and part of that was the trade of the team’s controversial closer, Francisco Rodriquez at midseason. GM Alderson has added some veteran pro’s to the returnees and this group should help Skipper Terry Collins relax a bit in late inning situations. RHs Ramon Ramirez and Jon Rauch(Tallest player in MLB) should pitch somewhere in the 6-7-8th innings while RH Frank Francisco, who has closed in both Texas and Toronto, is the likely saves guy. 2011 staffers Manny Acosta, Pedro Beato, Bobby Parnell(100+ MPH several times in 2011) and lone LH Tim Byrdak should round out the bullpen. A 2nd lefty would be a good addition to this group while RHP Jenrry Mejia, who missed most of 2011 after elbow surgery, is an elite arm who could make this team with a strong camp.
3- 2B- This is Daniel Murphy’s job to lose and if you judge a guy by how hard he works, Murphy will be hard to beat out. The talented hitter(Batted .320 in 109 games in 2011) showed up two weeks early for spring training and has been working hard on his defense. However, he has had two serious knee injuries while playing the field and wears braces on both joints. Justin Turner, who hit .260 in 117 games in the beat up Mets infield in 2011, looks more like a super sub than everyday guy. Prospects Jordany Valdespin and Reese Havens although talented do not appear to be major league ready.
4- Replacing Reyes- Again, the Mets have an incumbent internal option in Rueben Tejada to take over at shortstop. However, replacing the 2011 National League batting champion Jose Reyes is more of team wide thing than just on the 2nd year major leaguer. Tejada is an excellent defensive player and ideally a #2 hitter on a good team. He hit .284 with .696 OPS in 328 at bats in 2011(No home runs) and has gained 10 pounds in the offseason. This is a solid player, not the spectacular Reyes and most fans realize this. Others-namely Davis and Wright- will have to pull more weight to offset the loss of the Mets former star shortstop.
5- Outfield Options- I think the Mets are set at the corner spots with Bay and the promising Lucas Duda in right field. In his rookie season, Duda hit .292 with 10 homers and 50 rbi in 301 at bats. He is not Dwight Evans in right but he is passable. Veteran Scott Hairston and the team’s top OF prospect Kirk Nieuwenhuis are the options to supplant Duda. CF Andres Torres was acquired in the Angel Pagan trade and had a tough 2011 campaign in San Francisco after being a key component for the 2010 World Champions. An excellent defensive outfielder, the team hopes he can approach his career best 2010 season, when he hit .268 with 16 homers.
First of all, I am writing this today with a heavy heart. Tough, tough day. I want to dedicate my 2012 season on Tomseaverfan.com to Gary Carter and his family. I lost a bit of my childhood today. While left with some great moments and memories, I am sad because the world lost someone today who was a true hero in every sense of the word. We will miss you, Kid.
The New York Mets and Baseball lost a great player and man this afternoon as catcher Gary Carter passed away from brain cancer at the age of 57. A team leader and respected locker room voice, the Hall of Famer was an 11 time All Star(2 time All Star game MVP) and starred with the Montreal Expos for 10 seasons. Carter ,acquired in a offseason trade entering the 1985 season, was considered the best backstop in the game and played for New York til 1989. That move was viewed as the final piece in the puzzle for the young and talented Mets club that took off in 1984 before winning the franchise’s 2nd World Championship in 1986.
Baseball wise, Gary fit the Mets like a glove. He teamed with 1B Keith Hernandez and RF Darryl Strawberry to form a brutally devastating 3-4-5 slots in the batting order. The Power hitter was an ideal cleanup man(324 career home runs, 20+ his first 3 years with the Mets) for the club with his right handed stick balancing the south paws in veteran glove man Hernandez and the emerging superstar talent Strawberry. “Kid” was also great with pitchers and worked hard to make them successful. Mets skipper Davey Johnson praised his research and preparation, calling him “a one-man scouting system”. He was famous for catching starting pitchers pregame BULLPEN sessions. Saying I want to see how they throw, not have some one tell me. An underrated defensive force, he collected 3 gold gloves.
I spent several hours tonight watching coverage of Gary’s passing on the Mets flagship network, SNY and you began to realize how loved and respected he was. I come from a divorced family and my Father lived in New York for most of the Carter era years. We frequently visited Shea Stadium and I loved the Mets. They played with energy, passion and intensity, they had flair and flash. That team helped turn me on to sports and is big reason why I do what I do today. Somewhere upstairs, Gary Carter is smiling.
The Mets had four arbitration eligible players left and all four were inked to contracts by the deadline. Mike Pelfrey, Andres Torres, Ramon Ramirez and Manny Acosta all signed one year deals for 2012.
Pelfrey signed a $5.68 million deal after just a 7-13 season. Outfielder Torres will make $2.7 million while Ramirez will make $2.67 million. Finally, Acosta will make $875,000. The Mets have been pretty quiet in the offseason and they’re getting their payroll down. Not a surprise with all of the financial problems that the Met’s owners have had.
Kevin Goldstein published his list of the Mets top eleven prospects and you have to be happy about the five and four star guys. Topping the list is Matt Harvey, the Mets top pick in 2010. He was great at High-A before struggling a bit at Double-A but he has a good chance of being a front of the rotation starter. I also like the fact that we should see him in a Mets uniform this year.
Number two and the other five star guy is Zack Wheeler. The Mets top pick in 2009, Wheeler dominated at High-A and he’ll get to test his mettle at Double-A this year. This was the cornerstone of the trade for Carlos Beltran and you hope this guy pans out in a big way.
Number three and the lone four star guy is Jeurys Familia. The right hander split time at High-A and Double-A and he got it done at both levels. This is another guy we could see with the Mets in 2012. Brandon Nimmo (OF) and Juan Lagares (OF) round out the top ten.
