Offseason Update #2

by @ 12:48 am. Filed under 2010 Mets

Breaking News: The Mets have a deal done with veteran RHP Chris Young, pending a physical. The 6’8 former San Diego Padres all star has battled shoulder injuries the past 3 campaigns while making only 26 starts over that period . Earlier today, the club signed respected ML OF(and Mets killer) Willie Harris to a minor league deal. Harris, noted as an excellent defensive player, hit 10 homers in 224 2010 at bats.   Very solid, underrated signing that can keep the other OFs fresh and give new skipper Terry Collins  a weapon on the  bench.

The club also signed two reclamation type projects last week in LH starter Chris Capuano and RH reliever Taylor Buchholz. Capuano, missed two full seasons after a 2nd Tommy John surgery(elbow ligament replacement)  on his throwing arm, pitched well in 2010 for the Milwaukee Brewers, going 4-4,3.95 in 24 games( including 9 starts) while throwing 66 innings . The 32 year old Duke alumn won 18 games in 2005 and translates well to Citi Field. Buchholz should contribute to the Mets pen after coming back late in 2010 from elbow surgery that caused him to miss the entire 2009 season. The righty threw 12 innings in 9 games and looks healthy. If he matches his outstanding pre-injury 2008 campaign(6-6,2.17, .188 opponents batting average), New York has a find! The Mets also signed  catcher Raul Chavez to a minor league deal late last week. The 11 year veteran spent the 2010 season in Triple A after playing 51 games for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009.

Mets News

by @ 10:58 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The New York Mets have been busy over the past 2 weeks or so, signing 2 players who will be on the team in 2011 while completing their coaching staff this Monday(December 13th). A quick recap:

1- Roster additions: The Mets new front office led by GM Sandy Alderson has been active and made two solid moves last week, signing both a veteran catcher and much needed relief help. RH D.J. Carrasco, who split time between Pittsburgh and Arizona in 2010, gives the bullpen an experienced option. The 33 yr old signed a 2 year deal for 2.5 million and was 3-2 with a 3.68 ERA over 78 and third innings in 2010. He K-ed 62 while walking 29. NY also added backstop Ronny Paulino, who will back up Josh Thole. The 29 yr old played for division rival Florida in 2010, posting a .259 average with 4 home runs and 37 rbi over 316 at bats. Paulino must sit out the first 8 games of the campaign due to suspension resulting from a positive performance enhancing drug test.

2- Staff set-up: New skipper Terry Collins announced his staff on Monday December 11th, adding to returnees, Pitching coach Dan Warthen and 3rd base coach Chip Hale. Dave Hudgens will serve as pitching coach, Jon DeBus is in the bullpen while Ken Oberkfell has the key bench coach position. Mets legend Mookie Wilson will coach 1st base. Hudgens and DeBus are from outside the organization but have experience with Collins(DeBus) and  Alderson(Hudgens) as well as throughout the game.

Offseason Update

by @ 11:48 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Some Mets News items:

1- Collins’ staff taking shape: New skipper Terry Collins is reportedly going to retain 2 members of Jerry Manuel’s 2010 staff, pitching coach Dan Warthen and 3rd base coach Chip Hale. Collins will more than likely choose a bench coach and is openly campaigning for long time ex Met fan favorite Mookie Wilson to coach 1st base.

2- Free agency: Very little to report in this area with the team almost being set in both the field and rotation wise(Need a depth starter with Ace Johan Santana’s early season status unclear). The club must decide on the roles of both 2B Luis Castillo and LHP Oliver Perez  before spring training as well. Look for the club to sign a back up veteran catcher, some bullpen help and possibly a reclamation project type starting pitcher. Ex San Diego Padre RH SP Chris Young has been linked with the Mets.

3- F Mart: NY’s Top OF prospect Fernando Martinez, a candidate to open the season with the big club, is  back in NY to have his surgically repaired right knee examined after experiencing discomfort in his only winter ball game.

4- Contracts: LH RP Pedro Feliciano, one of the top relievers in the game, has until November 30th to accept the club’s arbitration offer  or if any club signs him, the Mets will receive  draft pick compensation as a a class B free agent(2nd round pick in the 2011 entry draft).  NY also must tender contracts to the following players by Thursday December 2nd or they become non-tendered free agents: SPs Mike Pelfrey, R.A. Dickey and John Maine, RP Sean Green and OF Angel Pagan. All except Maine are almost guaranteed to return, even Green, who has had two tough years in Flushing. But the Mets need help in the pen and Green will cost around 1 million to retain, Pelfrey, Pagan and Dickey are strong candidates for multi-year extensions.

5- Winter Meetings: Start next week in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, look for some major free agent signings as the December holiday break draws near!

by @ 11:52 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

According to numerous media reports, former Angels and Astros skipper Terry Collins will be named the Manager of the New York Mets with a press conference more than likely Tuesday. Previously serving as the club’s minor league field coordinator, Collins beat out(Among others) Wally Backman, Chip Hale and Bob Melvin, who all worked within the organization in 2010. All 3 finalists are more than likely to be offered roles with  either the parent club or in the minor league system.

Mets update: Managerial search down to 4 candidates, Beltran’s status and other news from the GM meetings

by @ 8:41 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

1- Managerial search down to 4 candidates: The 4 finalists to manage the 2011 New York Mets: Bob Melvin, Wally Backman, Terry Collins and Chip Hale, All four will have 2nd interviews with the club before the conclusion of the winter meetings in Florida this week, according to a press release from the team. Melvin and Hale were scheduled to meet with Mets brass Wednesday while Backman and Collins Thursday. I hope Wally gets the job but believe Collins is the front runner. If you read my blog and know me at all, you don’t need to ask why I want Wally to manage this team. But if you want some evidence why he would make things very interesting, YOUTUBE his name! The club plans to make a final decision this weekend with a possible hiring press conference Tuesday.

2- DePodesta added to Front office: Well respected MLB executive Paul DePodesta was hired by new GM Sandy Alderson last week as Vice president of player development and scouting. The former baseball and football player at Harvard University, has worked previously for the Cleveland Indians(1996-1999) and Oakland A’s(1999-2004)  before being named GM of the Los Angeles Dodgers at the age of 31 in February of 2004, a position he held thru the 2005 season. DePodesta was hired by  the San Diego Padres in June 2006 ,holding two posts(Special Assistant for Baseball Operations and Executive VP) before joining the Mets.

3- Beltran update: CF Carlos Beltran has given the Mets some options heading into this ever important offseason. First, he stated if management approached him about a trade, he would listen.  Equally newsworthy where his feelings about moving to a a corner outfield position, a viable option that could save wear and tear on Beltran’s surically repaired right knee. Carlos reports he has no pain in the joint and would move out of center if the team approached him in a professional manner. However, the 3 time gold glove award winner believes he could still play the position and play it well.

Mets Update: Ricciardi added to Front Office, Reyes’ option picked up, 5 candidates for Managerial position

by @ 9:21 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Busy 1st week for GM Sandy Alderson  as he hired a key, experienced assistant,  continued to search for the Mets skipper while he kept the club’s star shortstop. Lets look at each move in order.

1- NY added J.P Ricciardi to the front office Tuesday. The former general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays(2001-2009) was recently working for ESPN as  a Baseball Analyst, worked for Alderson’s Oakland A’s teams for 16 years(1986-2001). He will assist in all areas of the front office but emphasize player development and scouting. Please note that many of the players that helped lead the Blue Jays surprising 2010 campaign are Ricciardi acquisitions.

2- The club’s managerial search involves 5 “Known” candidates, i.e potential hires that we have verification from the organization, specifically Alderson. Side note here: GREAT to have the Team give the fans updates on both the GM and managerial searches! Mets bench coach Dave Jauss  and scout Bob Melvin were interviewed Thursday while ex Met player and current minor league skipper Wally Backman, 3B coach Chip Hale and minor league field coordinator Terry Collins will interview this weekend in California. Other internal candidates to be linked to the position: Mets Triple A Manager Ken Oberkfell, ex Met and NY Double A skipper Tim Teufel.  Another ex Met, Texas Rangers hitting coach(and ex Colorado Rockie headman) Clint Hurdle and former Seattle Mariner manager Don Wakamatsu are believed to be the leading external candidates.

3- NY picked up the $11 million option on shortstop Jose Reyes contract while Alderson did not rule out the sides coming to agreement on a long term deal.

I can’t wait to get started again,” Reyes said in a statement. “This is where I began my career and this is where I want to stay. I want to do everything I can to help turn this around here. The last four years have been disappointing for everyone. We have to make it better and we will.”

Alderson Era Begins: Respected MLB executive hired as 12th GM in Mets history

by @ 7:42 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

As long rumored, the New York Mets hired highly respected baseball executive Sandy Alderson as their General Manager Friday.  The ex Marine and Lawyer is best known for building the powerful Oakland A’s teams(GM from 83-97) of the late 80s and early 90s, he also served as CEO of the San Diego Padres(2005-2009) after the A’s changed ownership. Recently, he served as a consultant for MLB regarding issues in the Dominican Republic with players falsifying ages & abusing performance enhancing drugs.  Alderson’s next major decision will be anointing  the next  Mets field manager with  Mets minor league skipper Wally Backman, ex A’s/Brewers manager Ken Macha and former Diamondbacks-Mariners manager Bob Melvin listed as potential choices.

Series pick

by @ 10:34 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Before the Post season started, I had the Rangers and Phillies playing in the Fall Classic. I was half right(Figures I would get the wrong team from the league I cover) but I am picking Texas to win in 6. Love that lineup (Both in the field and at bat) and they have enough pitching to keep a very average San Francisco offense off the board. For my money, Texas beat the two top offenses(Tampa, Yank$$s)  in the playoffs already and the Rangers staff will feel like they are on holiday when they see the Giants lineup.

Numerous reports: Mets set to name Sandy Alderson GM

by @ 10:30 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Various media outlets are reporting the New York Mets will name MLB executive Sandy Alderson their new general manager as early as Friday.  Alderson  built the great Oakland A’s teams of the late 1980s (led by RF Jose Canseco and 1B Mark McGwire) and also worked in the commissioners office from 1998 to 2005. He was also CEO of the San Diego Padres for 4 years leaving in March 2009 and recently was helping MLB deal with corruption issues in the Dominican Republic.

Playoff Picks

by @ 12:42 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

AL: I like the Texas Rangers to come out of the American League, they will defeat Tampa in 4 games then down the Minnesota Twins, who will stun the New York Yankees in 5. The Yankees lack of pitching depth will be exposed and the Twins have the right type of team to extend that unit. Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera do not look right and they are vital to the Bronx Bombers hopes, MAJOR miscalculation by Yankees management on both the roles and personel of their pitching staff.

NL: The National League is the strongest it has been in years and you could make a strong case for all 4 teams to be in the Fall Classic but to me, the Philadelphia Phillies are still the class of the group. This team added Roy Oswalt and Roy Halladay while subtracting Cliff Lee AND RF Jayson Werth is in a contract year. The Reds are a great story , they have a tremendous offense  and strong pen but they do not possess the elite starting pitching required to take down the Fighting Phils, Philly in 4. Finally, I like the San Francisco Giants over the Atlanta Braves. SF has maybe the best bullpen in the game as well as  a vastly underrated line-up with a good blend of youth and experience. Love Bobby Cox and Billy Wagner but the Giants win in 5.

World Series: Love the Rangers and their story with both Josh Hamilton and Manager Ron Washington overcoming personal demons but the Phillies experience as well as 1-2 rotation punch is too much for the talented Texans to over come. Phillies in 6.

New leadership for the Mets: Minaya fired, Manuel option not picked up

by @ 10:37 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

After 2 tough seasons in 2009 and 2010 as well as historic collapses in 07-08, time finally ran out on the tenure of GM Omar Minaya as well as Manager Jerry Manuel; Minaya was relieved of his duties while Manuel’s 2011 option was not picked up Monday morning by Mets management.  Manuel managed the final 93 games in 2008(55-38) then the injury plagued 2009 team(70-92) and this years club(79-83). He was always good to the media and a pleasure to work with, a very good baseball person but an even better man. I am in the minority here but I think Omar Minaya’s tenure was largely more positive than negative  but he mishandled some media issues and he will take the insane Oliver Perez deal to his grave. Mets ownership will first hire a GM then allow him to select the next manager. Reports have an internal list at 32 candidates with  Chicago White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn and Minnesota Twins executive Terry Ryan being heavily linked to the team.  MLB front office executive Sandy Alderson is another name you will see rumored for the job.

Season comes to a bizarre end as Perez walks home decisive run in 14 as Mets lose 2-1 to Nationals

by @ 9:58 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Beleaguered Mets LH Oliver Perez(0-5,6.80) put a fitting cap on the 2010 New York Mets season Sunday afternoon at Citi Field, walking 3 and hitting another in only a third of an inning, helping the Washington Nationals win 2-1 in 14 innings. Perez, in the 2nd year of a $36 million dollar deal, was  removed from the rotation in May and has pitched 4 times since August 1st.  The southpaw was understandly awful but Manager Jerry Manuel was out of pitchers after his pen gave him 6 innings of scoreless relief.  Perez walked talented youngster Justin Maxwell with the bases loaded for the decisive run.   Mets right hander Mike Pelfrey(15-9,3.66)  allowed 4 hits and 1 run over 7 innings, INF Ruben Tejada had 2 hits for NY. NY finishes 2010 at 79-83 while going 47-34 at home.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, RF Jesus Feliciano, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, CFAngel Pagan, LF Lucas Duda, C Josh Thole, Tejada, Pitcher

HOMER NUMBERS: 110 home runs hit at Citi Field in 2010, 28th in the majors. In 2009, there were 130. However, the Mets teams power numbers improved greatly. After sending 95 over the fences in 2009, the team hit 130 homers in 2010.

GAME NOTES: Perez had not pitched in 27 days…. Mets COO Jeff Wilpon will meet with both Manuel and GM Omar Minaya as early as Monday to inform them of their job status for 2011. Should be a short meeting….. Nationals INF Alberto Gonzalez had two of the 6 Washington hits…. Mets RH Manny Acosta(3-2,2.95, 2 holds) did not allow a hit and K-ed 3 over 3 innings…. Class moves by Manuel: Pushed Pelfrey out of the dugout for a curtain call when he pinch hit for his pitcher and sent in defensive replacements for both Reyes and Wright so fans could cheer them as well…. Ex Met Livan Hernandez(1–12,3.66) allowed only a run and 6 hits in 6 and two third innings

Reports: Manuel and Minaya to lose jobs

by @ 11:26 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Numerous media outlets are reporting that both Mets GM Omar Minaya and Manager Jerry Manuel will both lose their jobs but could be reassigned within the organization. Manuel’s(Manager since July 17,2008) contract expires after the 2010 season while Minaya(GM since Sept 2004)  has two years left at 1.1 million per year, rumors have specific language in the GM’s deal prohibiting the team from placing him in another position. No official word from the team but this story comes as little surprise with September collapses in 2007 and 2008 as well as disastrous 2009 and 2010 campaigns seemed to place a dark cloud over the club.

Thole walk off shot leads Mets over National 2-1

by @ 11:16 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

LH Pat Misch(0-4,3.89) pitched outstanding and C Josh Thole hit a walk off shot in the 10th inning as the New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 2-1 Friday night at Citi Field. Misch struck out 10 in 8 innings and 1B Ike Davis also homered for the NY, Hisanori Takahashi collected his 10th win with 2 scoreless frames. The Mets improve to 78-82 and 46-33 at Citi Field.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, RF Jesus Feliciano, CF Angel Pagan, Davis, LF Lucas Duda, 3B Mike Hessman, Thole, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Mets went 0 for 3 with runners in scoring position… Nationals RF Mike Morse homered for Washington… 3B David Wright was given the night off with veteran Mike Hessman taking his place in the field…Davis homer gives him #19 on the year tying him with OF Ron Swoboda(1965) for 2nd all time among the clubs rookies. Mets legend Darryl Strawberry tops the list with 26 in 1983….Teams combined for 7 hits(4 for NY), Thole was the only player on either club to collect 2

Brewers 5 run 9th caps 9-2 win as Mets post 2nd straight losing campaign

by @ 9:27 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The big bats of the Milwaukee Brewers proved too much for the New York Mets as the visitors rolled 9-2 Thursday night at Citi Field. RF Corey Hart and 3B Casey McGehee posted rbi to reach 100 rbi for the year while rookie CF Lorenzo Cain chipped in two hits and 3 runs driven in. Brewers starter Chris Harveson(12-9,4.99) gave up 4 hits and run over 6 and two third innings, he K-ed 9 and walked 3. Mets rookies, C Josh Thole and LF Lucas Duda plated runs. NY clinched their 2nd consecutive losing season(77-82)while their home record drops to 45-33.

METS STARTING LINE-UP:  SS Jose Reyes, RF Jesus Feliciano, CF Angel Pagan, 3B David Wright, 1B Mike Hessman, LF Lucas Duda, C Mike Nickeas, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Hart and McGehee both reached 100 rbi…. Mets rookie starter Dillon Gee(2-2,2.18) allowed 7 hits and 4 runs(2 earned) over 6 innings. The talented righty deserves a shot to break camp with the big club in April after registering 5 quality starts(6 innings, 3 earned runs or less) to start his career… Clutch vs Un-Clutch: Milwaukee was 6 for 16 with runners in scoring position, NY 0 for 5… Brewers LF Ryan Braun(103)  with McGehee and Hart are one of two teams to have 3 players with 100 rbi in 2010. The other? The New York Yankees with 3B Alex Rodriquez, 1B Mark Teixeira and 2B Robinson Cano….. An MRI on Mets OF Nick Evans non throwing shoulder came back negative… Brewers star 1B Prince Fielder scored 3 runs… Mets played sloppy in the field (3 errors) looking like a team that is ready to go home. Shame on this club for quitting on Manager Jerry Manuel who is a good baseball man and better person who not ONCE in his 2.5 years as skipper did not back a player publicly, right or wrong. A class act who will lose his job sometime next week

GAME NOTES: CF Carlos Beltran has inflammation in his right knee and will miss the remainder of the season. The news is good however as the knee appears to have no further structural damage and he should be go to with rest…. Evans injured his left shoulder in the game and was replaced by OF Jesus Feliciano. The team did not have an update post game…. Pagan stole his 37th base. by @ 10:06 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The young and talented Florida Marlins jumped on starter Jon Niese for 5 first inning runs and never looked back as they handled the New York Mets 7-5 Wednesday night in Miami. Florida 2B Dan Uggla(3 hits,  run, 2 rbi) and 3B Wes Helms(hit, 3 rbi) led the Marlins 9 hit attack while rookie RH Alex Sanabia(5-3,3.99) pitched well over five innings to earn the victory. Niese settled down and gave the Mets 5 and two third work man like innings while being charged with 6 runs. CF Carlos Beltran had 3 hits including a home run, rookie 1B Ike Davis chipped in with 2 hits. The loss drops the Mets to 74-78 on the season and 30-48 away from Citi Field.

K ROD UPDATE: Injured Mets closer Francisco Rodriquez surrender to authorities Wednesday and was arraigned on criminal contempt charges for violating a restraining order against his girlfriend, Daian Pena. K Rod sent over 50 text messages allegedly in direct violation of the court and faces charges that carry a maximum one-year sentence. The MLB all time single season saves record holder assaulted Pena’s 53 year old father  post game August 11th in the Mets family lounge. Rodriquez was released on $7500 bond and returns to court on October 7th.

Marlins won the season series with the Mets 12-7 and did not lose a game at Sun Life Stadium(6-0)…. Pagan(31) and Wright(34) both hit doubles… The first 6 Mets batters all collected hits… Uggla’s rbi give him 98 in 2010. METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, RF Angel Pagan, CF Carlos Beltran, Wright, 1B Ike Davis, Duda, C Josh Thole, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

SHAME ON YOU, JOE: Dodgers Manager Joe Torre apologized to Mets skipper Jerry Manuel today after stating publicly Monday  that  he would be open to managing the Mets . One problem, the Mets HAVE a manager. Just another example of why A: I DESPISE Joe Torre, B: He has no class and is all about himself  C: If the Mets do hire him, I would drop them faster than BP stock

GAME NOTES: Key Mets reliever Bobby Parnell will shut it down for the season with an inflamed right elbow. He will rest the arm and should be ready for Spring training … Wright’s 20 errors lead NL 3B…. Sanchez, who should draw some rookie of the year votes, has hit .283 with 19 homers and 83 RBI. He also brings a strong glove to First base…. Reyes 3rd inning triple broke Mets legend(and Broadcaster) Keith Hernandez 22 game road hitting streak set in 86-87. The speedy shortstop has hit in 23 straight road contests…. Rookies Davis, Duda and Tejada had two hits apiece…Pelfrey threw 69 strikes out of  113 pitches… Both Wright(11) and Reyes(13) were thrown out on steal attempts… Veteran Elmer Dessens(3-2,2.55) took the loss after giving up 3 straight hits, hi-lighted by the Sanchez blast in the 8th. The popular righty allowed 4 hits and 3 runs in only a third of an inning

Lee’s slam the big blow as Braves handle Mets 6-3

by @ 9:53 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Braves 1B Derek Lee’s 7th inning grand slam put Atlanta ahead for good as the Braves handled the New York Mets 6-3 Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.  R.A. Dickey(11-7, 2.92) ran out of gas in the frame and two relievers could not  escape the jam as well. Ex Brave Manny Acosta(2-1,3.34) served up the slam, the Mets ML high 12th allowed in 2010.  3B David Wright(2 run shot) hit his club leading 24th homer for NY in the 1st while the Braves swept the weekend series 3 straight. Veteran RH Derek Lowe(14-12,4.18) tossed 6 innings for the win while rookie RH Craig Kimbrel earned his 1st ML save for the Braves. The Mets drop to 74-76 on the season and 44-30 at Citi Field.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, RF Angel Pagan, CF Carlos Beltran, Wright, 1B Ike Davis, LF Lucas Duda, C Josh Thole, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: The 2006 Baltimore Orioles are the last team to allow at least 12 grand slams in  season…. Wright tied Mets legend Mike Piazza for 2nd on the club’s all time RBI list at 655. Darryl Strawberry is #1 with 733…2B Omar Infante, C Brian McCann, SS Alex Gonzalez and Lee each had 2 hits to pace the 12 hit Atlanta attack…  NY (and ex- Brave) C Henry Blanco presented Atlanta skipper Bobby Cox with a bottle of wine before the game. The Braves future Hall of Fame Manager will retire after this season while the Mets organization will ship a case of wine to his Georgia residence…. Beltran and Davis both had 2 of the NY hits… Rookie C Josh Thole made his 2nd error of the season… As incredible as it is that the Mets have given up 12 Grand slams in 2010 here is an even  more amazing statistic: the NY batters have ZERO!!!!!!

Atlanta rookie star RF Jason Heyward hit a 3 run homer during an explosive 6 run 4th inning as the Braves defeated the New York Mets 6-4 Friday night at Citi Field in Queens.  The huge inning was aided by a critical throwing error by Mets star 3B David Wright(#19) and LH SP Jon Niese(9-9,3.76)  could not stop the bleeding. The rookie southpaw allowed 5 hits and 6 runs(None unearned) while striking out 4 and walking 3 over 4 frames.  Braves RH Tommy Hanson(10-11,3,62) earned the win, giving up 5 hits and 4 runs over 6. Ex Met Billy Wagner earned his 34th save while the Mets drop to 74-74 on the season.

Offensively, the Mets were led by rookie LF Lucas Duda, who hit his first ML homer while collecting 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 rbi. SS Jose Reyes and Niese  added rbi in the 3 run 2nd.  Braves All Star 2B Omar Infante drove in 2 runs while OF Melky Cabrera got the 6 run inning going for Atlanta with an rbi single. Mid season trade acquisition 1B Derek Lee drew two walks and scored a run while Heyward did the rest. 4 Mets relievers did not allow a single hit over the final 5 stanzas, led by RH Sean Green’s two innings.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, RF Chris Carter, CF Carlos Beltran, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, C Josh Thole,  Duda, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Beltran is considering playing Winter Ball to strengthen his surgically repaired knee… OF Angel Pagan was not in the line-up due to a medical issue with one of his children. He did pinch hit and Wagner struck him out for the final out of the game…. Braves skipper Bobby Cox was ejected for arguing balls and strikes on behalf of Hanson in the 2nd. He has been tossed a ML record 158 times, 5 in 2010… The Mets will honor Cox, who is retiring after the season, with a pre-game ceremony Sunday… Green K-ed two Atlanta hitters….. Braves rookie LH set up man Jonny Venters is having an incredible freshman campaign, look at his stat line: 4-2,1.81 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 83 Ks in 74.2 innings with only 34 walks. He also has allowed only 1 – ONE- homer all season!!!! In a great season for NL rookies, he will not win an award but his stats are astonishing and Vetters is playing  A HUGE role in an outstanding bullpen of a playoff contending team.

by @ 10:43 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The New York Mets used a 7 run 4th inning to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-7 Wednesday night at Citi Field but the big story was an apparent shoulder injury to top pitching prospect Jenrry Mejia in the 3rd inning. The team has called it an acute shoulder strain and the right hander is scheduled to undergo an MRI to determine the severity. A good bet that his season is over. OFs Angel Pagan and Carlos Beltran had two hits apiece while Pagan added two rbi. SS Jose Reyes homered as NY won its third straight game. LH long man Raul Valdez(3-3, 5.58) took over for the injured Mejia and was followed by 5 other relievers.
