Mets LH RP Billy Wagner has decided to waive his no-trade clause and accept a trade to the AL wild card leading Boston Red Sox. Boston has agreed to not pick up his 2010 option but will retain his arbitration rights, which will allow the Sox to get two draft picks for him if he leaves as a free agent. Wagner, who has 385 saves, can pitch only every third day as he comes back from Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow. In 2 games for the Mets, he has pitched 2 innings and allowed 1 walk with no hits. He K-ed 4 and did not allow an earned run.
Wagner called his agent Bean Stringfellow around an hour before the 1 pm deadline for his decision saying,“I’m going to throw caution to the wind and I’m going to go to Boston.”"He wanted to be part of a pennant race,” Mets general manager Omar Minaya said on a conference call. “We were able to get a couple of prospects for him. We felt it was the right thing to do.”
Now the good-bad news regarding ace Lefty Johan Santana. He is out for the remainder of the ‘09 with surgery to remove bone chips in his left elbow but should be fine for the 2010 season, according to Mets medical director, Dr. David Altchek. He is now the 12th Mets player to be placed on the DL, hi-lighted by stars Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Delgado.
With the Wagner trade and Santana being placed on the DL, the Mets recalled LH Pat Misch and 1B-OF Nick Evans from Triple-A Buffalo.
Bloggers Opinion: Good news on all fronts here. Wagner gets a chance to win a world series and NY got something of value back. It was obvious Johan was hurt and based on the ‘09 season, anything short of amputation would not stun Mets fans. This is a best case scenarion and the it appears the club will have their ace back in 2010.
