Mets lose Bourn to Tribe, Look to youth, veteran projects to man OF

by @ 6:40 pm. Filed under 2012 Mets

Barring a trade or signing in camp, the Mets outfield appears to be set going into 2013 after the remaining top free agent OF Michael Bourn shunned the Mets to sign with the Cleveland Indians last week. The candidates appear to be Lucas Duda in Left, Kirk Nieuwenhuis manning Center with platoon options including Collin Cowgill,Mike Baxter, Marlon Byrd and Andrew Brown. Jordany Valdespin, who has immense talent, will also get a look. Rest assured, this group reminds no one of the 1961 Yankees but if they can catch the ball and hit enough, their is no reason this group cannot be functional. The infield should be very good and can carry the team offensively. Losing out on Bourn hurts but he filled one spot. The Mets have an entire OF to fill.

Mets continue to stockpile veteran arms as Bourn to NY reports heat up

by @ 10:29 pm. Filed under 2012 Mets

Mets GM Sandy Alderson continues to address the biggest weakness of the 2012 Mets(The bullpen and pitching depth in general) while also trying to fortify what appears to be the flaw of the 2013 team- the Outfield. The team recently signed long time veteran reliever Latroy Hawkins(2-3,3.64 in 48 games for the LA Angels in 2012, been in Majors since 1997) and are reportedly close to inking former ML closer Brandon Lyon to compete or supplant Mets 2012 saves leader Frank Francisco(offseason elbow surgery). Meanwhile, numerous media outlets have the Mets leading in the sweepstakes for the top remaining free agent Outfielder, former Atlanta Brave CF Michael Bourn. Besides the obvious money-term and length of a deal, Scott Boras is Bourn’s agent, etc, the Mets are waiting for a determination from MLB on the status of their 1st pick in the 2013 if they sign a top level free agent.
