BREAKING METS NEWS: Beltran deal near?

by @ 11:35 am. Filed under 2011 Mets

Several news outlets are reporting that the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants are very close to a long rumored deal involving RF Carlos Beltran. A trade could be completed today(July 27th) for  RHP Zach Wheeler and cash coming from California .  The move is currently awaiting approval from the league, according to SNY.

Beltran’s last week with the Mets?, Wright big in return, Santana upbeat and “closer”, More Mets news

by @ 9:01 pm. Filed under 2011 Mets

Should be a very interesting next 5-6 days for the New York Mets as they continue to play solid not sensational ball(51-51 after action July 25th) in season that started in financial turmoil off the field.   The team has played gritty, inspired ball on it despite injuries to numerous key players, namely 3B David Wright(Returned this weekend), 1B Ike Davis and SS Jose Reyes(Back last week).  I didn’t even mention that ace Johan Santana has been out all season after late season shoulder surgery in 2010. Manager Terry Collins has been a huge factor with both his enthusiasm and work ethic.  GM Sandy Alderson has also been tremendous in his 1st year at the helm with  some subtle depth type moves, helping the team put a presentable major league product on display nightly. Now comes the tough part. The Mets are in a great division and barring a major miracle, cannot catch either the Philadelphia Phillies or Atlanta Braves for a post season birth(Division title or wild card) . The MLB non waiver trade deadline is July 31st at 4 pm.  The team does have some very attractive potential free agents on the roster(Reyes, Reliever Jason Isringhausen) and one of them(RF Carlos Beltran) is considered the best trade chip on the market. The switch hitter is having a great season, making the 2011 All Star team and is not a good bet to remain in NY. As many as 7 teams are interested in Beltran and the Mets could use these teams to jack up the price. As I type, the favorites are the San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers for Carlos’ services. The Boston Red Sox, Phillies and Braves are more on the outside looking in. I like Carlos but this team is building for the 2012 and beyond and anything they can do to help the future of this club, I am in favor of. In Sandy, I trust!

WRIGHT IS RIGHT: David Wright(Stress fracture in back) rejoined the club in Florida and played his 1st games since May. He has a hit in each game(8 for 19, .421) and  has hit for power as well.(3 doubles, homer, 6 rbi) #5 looks healthy and that is the biggest thing for Mets fans.

SANTANA UPDATE: The club’s ace threw a 45 pitch bullpen session Sunday afternoon(July 24) in Floridan and “felt good”. The team will decide Tuesday whether Santana will start a minor league rehab assignment this week. Due to MLB rules, once he begins a  rehab assignment, the club has 30 days before they must activate him. Look for Santana back on the mound in early September.

METS NOTES: Mets will reportedly hang on to Reyes and Isringhausen for the remainder of the year. The team would like to resign Jose to a multi year deal and they cleared a ton of salary with the post All Star game trade of closer Francisco Rodriquez. Issy is the new closer(3 saves post trade) and likes playing for the team. He is also serving as a mentor to the team’s future closer, Bobby Parnell… No further update on Davis. Other than the Mets sent him home this weekend to rest his ankle in Arizona. Sad to say but I do think we have seen the last of the promising 1B in 2011…. CF Angel Pagan left the July 24th game in the 5th inning complaining of fatigue and dizziness . Collins held him out of  the next game(July 25th) and he was being checked out by team doctors…. Mets are reportedly close to signing 2011 1st rounder  High school OF Brandon Nimmo

Updates on Wright, Beltran and Reyes,Other notes

by @ 9:28 pm. Filed under 2011 Mets

Medical updates on 3 New York Mets stars, starting with 3B David Wright. Wright continues to make good progress from the stress fracture in his back and has DH-ed and played 3rd(2)  in 3 minor league games without any issues. He will stay in  Florida where manager Terry Collins hopes he can rejoin the team this Friday July 22nd. RF Carlos Beltran missed games this weekend(July 16th-17th) with the flu. SS Jose Reyes(Hamstring) has been running before games and looks good, he will play 1 rehab game with the Brooklyn Cyclones and could be activated as early as Tuesday July 19th.

METS NOTES:  Collins has stated that LF Jason Bay(.234,6 home runs, 28 rbi) could lose playing time to red hot INF-OF Scott Hairston.267,5,19 in 90 at bats) if he does not star producing. Hairston was 3 for 5 with titanic homer into the 2nd deck in left field while driving in 5 runs during the 11-2 win over the division leading Philadelphia Phillies July 16th. As someone who covered Bay in Pittsburgh and followed his stay in Boston, I am astounded by how bad he has been for the Mets. This guy is a good player and he has just fallen off the cliff. Sad to see for a good locker room presence and person. And I don’t buy this bright lights, big city BS. He replaced Manny Ramirez in Boston. That is not a small task. If you can fix Jason ,please call the Mets! This is a strange game and this situation confirms it!!!…. INF Daniel Murphy  has 71 hits since May 21st, the most in the majors…. 1B Ike Davis(Ankle) has not played since May 1oth and received a cortisone shot into the joint July 17th., He will rest 3  more weeks and if their is not significant improvement  will undergo season ending surgery.

CITI FIELD SALE: K Rod traded to Milwaukee, Beltran next?

by @ 11:46 am. Filed under 2011 Mets

We hear often that sports is a business and Tuesday night July 12th, fans of the New York Mets had that lesson reinforced. Almost immediately after The MLB All Star game the team traded closer Francisco “K-Rod” Rodriquez(and a reported $5 millon according to the  NY Post’s Joel Sherman) to the Milwaukee Brewers for 2 players to be named. The Mets will get to select 2 names from a list  of players already agreed to at season’s end. K Rod is in the final year of a 3 year, 37  million dollar deal that includes a vesting option for $17.5 million in 2012  if he finishes 55 games in 2011. Rodriquez has completed 34 games this year and with the Mets in financial disarray due to the perilous financial status of the  Wilpon family ownership , moving this contract was a necessity. The team will also look to move 2011 All Star RF Carlos Beltran  before the July 31st trade deadline as well. The San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox have been linked to Beltran in recent weeks. This move was also designed to clear cash, allowing Mets General Manager  Sandy Alderson to make a contract offer to SS Jose Reyes, who will be a free agent at season’s end. On the field, this is a big deal. One of the strengths of this club has been the late inning relievers. When you remove a part of that group, others change roles. Look for 4th year RH Bobby Parnell to get 1st crack at the closer’s job with veteran RH Jason Isringhausen and rookie RH Pedro Beato also being potential candidates. A tough, tough 24 hours for Mets fans but a day and move that had to happen to help the team in 2012 and beyond.

1st half ends over .500, Wright,Davis,Reyes and Johan updates, Mets Notes

by @ 8:08 pm. Filed under 2011 Mets

One of the top surprises in all of major league baseball, the New York Mets closed out the 1st half Sunday night in defeat but are over .500 at 46-45. The team has been without ace Johan Santana all season while franchise 3B David Wright(Back) and 2nd year phenom 1B Ike Davis(Ankle) have also missed major time due to injury. The ownership’s financial situation is almost nighty news but the team, led by Manager Terry Collins,in his 1st year managing the team, and SS Jose Reyes, a top candidate for NL MVP, has played inspired ball. Collins excels at finding roles for his players and has been masterful with a pitching staff that is more about the whole than sum of  the parts. Most importantly and this is very important for fans of this franchise, this is a TEAM. They play hard and show up to compete. That is a big thing for this organization and anything positive on the field has a great value when you consider the ordeals they have put their followers thru starting in 2007 and beyond.

MEDICAL UPDATES:  A rare almost 100% positive report on the medical front. First, Wright is progressing “very, very well” from the stress fracture in his back, according to Collins. He has stepped up running at the Mets Spring Training facility in Florida and will slide Monday as well as run the bases. He also participated in batting practice and infield drills with the Mets class A advanced team. Davis ran on his ankle for the first time Saturday and felt “great” said Collins. The next step for the 1B is run on the field Monday. Reyes has been active around the team, taking grounders at SS and running lightly in the OF, The team hopes to have him back around July 22nd. Santana threw a bullpen session July 9th and it went well. His next step would be considered spring training for him but GM Sandy Alderson did not offer a time table for Santana’s return.

METS NOTES: Alderson stated over the weekend that he would not trade away players( Rumored names: Reyes, OF Carlos Beltran, Closer Francisco Rodriquez and RP Jason Isringhausen, ) as along the club continues to contend…. INF Daniel Murphy has been a pleasant surprise(.306,5 home runs,36 rbi) with both his bat and glove… Starting RHP R.A. Dickey did not miss any time after straining an left glute on July 3rd…. Mets led the NL with 27 road wins….. Isringhausen has told Alderson he does not want to be traded, according to the Daily News

Reports: Reyes out 3 weeks with hamstring, NY Post: Mets, Reyes camp to meet to discuss extension

by @ 11:17 am. Filed under 2011 Mets

Big news day regarding Mets SS Jose Reyes on both the injury and contract fronts. ESPN’s Enrique Rojas is reporting that Reyes has been told by doctors he will miss 3 weeks with a grade 1 left hamstring strain. Mets GM Sandy Alderson told reporters Wednesday that Reyes’ agents wanted the doctor who operated on his right hamstring in 2009 to review the MRI and the medical report. Jose as taking batting practice and fielding ground balls but has not attempted to run since the injury occurred in Saturday’s game vs the Yankees. Reyes is having an MVP type season and rallied to win the National League starting short stop position in fan voting this weekend.

The New York Post reported July 7th that the Mets will approach The Reyes camp soon  with contract proposals in hopes of signing the SS to a long term extension in the coming weeks. Within the last 2-3 weeks, the Reyes’ representatives said they would not negotiate at all during the 2011 season, Jose is a free agent after the season ends. Alderson has stated publicly that he would adhere to their wishes while Chris Leible, one of Reyes’ agents, said their will be no secret talks. Stay tuned!!!

BREAKING METS NEWS: REYES HAS GRADE 1 HAMSTRING STRAIN

by @ 2:47 pm. Filed under 2011 Mets

NY Mets SS Jose Reyes underwent an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan Sunday morning(July 3rd) and the  test revealed he has a grade 1 strain(Least severe of all hamstring injuries) of his left hamstring. Manager Terry Collins told reporters post game that it is possible that his leadoff man will not play til after the all star break while GM Sandy Alderson wants to see how Reyes responds Monday and over the next couple of days. Reyes says he feels nothing in the leg right now but will be careful. He will not play until his leg can withstand a full game and hopes to play Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Oh No: Reyes hurt, Record setting offense, Wright, Santana updates, Reyes wins SS vote, Beltran also picked for all star team, Other Notes

by @ 2:30 pm. Filed under 2011 Mets

Just when things started to look good for the 2011 New York Mets, Saturday July 2nd happened and SS Jose Reyes, the 2011 NL MVP, came up lame after trying to beat out an infield hit in the  1st and was pulled in the 2nd inning with tightness in his left hamstring.  The Mets leadoff man had an MRI pre game Sunday July 3rd and the team was awaiting the results. Reyes has a history of leg injuries, missing 53 games in 2004 and 36 in 2009 with issues in his right leg. As I type at 5:45 Sunday July 3rd no word from the club but the injury does not appear to be serious. Reyes entered the day leading the major leagues in batting average(.354), hits(124), triples(15) and multi hit games(43). He also has stolen 30 bases and tops the NL with 65 runs scored. If you want to know what it has been like to be a Mets fan lately, today is a shining example. Reyes rallies to pass Colorado Rockies superstar SS Troy Tulowitzki in the all star fan balloting and he is hurt!  If this team did not have bad luck they wouldn’t have any! Mets Manager Terry Collins has pledged to not play Reyes until he is medically cleared and will start INF Rueben Tejada at SS with CF Angel Pagan leading off. The next couple of days are huge for this club, which has battled all year with injuries to stars such as LHSP Johan Santana, 3B David Wright and 1B Ike Davis but has played inspired ball for Collins in his 1st season with the club.

RECORD SETTING WEEK: The Mets set a team record with 52 runs in a 4 game span midweek(June 25th and 26th at Texas, 27-28 at Detroit) while collecting 69 hits. New York scored 50 runs June 12-15 in 1990 but this outburst topped it. The Mets scored 14 runs 3 times in four games and ended an embarrassing streak as well, the team hit two grand slams in CONSECUTIVE innings after hitting none in 299 games! LF Jason Bay hit his slam to left in the 4th and RF Carlos Beltran followed with his own shot to left in the 5th.

DAVID AND JOHAN: Wright continues to make good progress from the stress fracture in his back and hit off a tee July 1st in Port St. Lucie July 1st. He could start rehab game as early as next week. LHSP Johan Santana threw a bullpen session in Florida  June 29th and reported no problems. He will throw another one soon and if all goes as scheduled, he will begin his normal spring training routine after that, according to Mets GM Sandy Alderson.

HALL OF FAME COMPANY: Since 1898, the only player with more steals and triples in their first 1000 games than Reyes(Reached June 28th) is …. TY COBB!!!  Jose has 98 triples and 360 steals while Cobb posted 106 three baggers and 391 thefts.

METS NOTES: RF Carlos Beltran was also selected for the 2011 All Star game in Arizona Tuesday July 12th. Beltran has comeback from 2 injury plagued years to hit .281 with 12 home runs and 54 rbi with little protection due to the depleted lineup…. Thoughts and prayers are with INF-OF Willie Harris and his family after his wife unexpectedly went into labor 5 months into her pregnancy and lost the baby Thursday morning. Willie is one of the good guys in the game and was placed on paternity leave then the bereavement list as he dealt with this. Sunday July 3rd he was back and OF Fernando Martinez was sent down… Mets pitchers allowed 18 grand slams during the 299 game drought.. 1B Ike Davis will test his injured ankle to see if the pain in his ankle is tolerable sometime in the coming week. If their is  no progress, he will have season ending surgery… Again, unfortunate to report but RHRP Taylor Bucholz,on the DL with shoulder fatigue, is battling depression as well according to the New York Times.
