Breaking News: David Einhorn purchases 33% of Mets, Pagan back, Dickey hurt plus Gary Carter update and more Mets news

by @ 10:31 am. Filed under 2011 Mets

Investor and businessman David Einhorn,43,  purchased 33% of the New York Mets this week and has infused the cash strapped club with a reported $200 million, according to numerous reports. A lifelong Mets fan and New Jersey native, Einhorn’s purchase allows the club to start repaying loans from MLB as well as attempt to offset the financial losses incurred from the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme. “We are excited about David joining our ownership group for several reasons,” principal owner Fred Wilpon said in statement. “David’s investment immediately improves the franchise’s financial position.”  Excellent timing when you factor in the front cover story in this week’s issue of Sports Illustrated(May 30th cover date) that quotes Wilpon that the Mets are “bleeding cash” and could lose up to $70 million this year.

PAGAN BACK, DICKEY HURT: CF Angel Pagan returned to the lineup Friday May 27th after being placed on the DL with a stress fracture in his ribs. Pagan, who has not played since April 21st, went 2 for 4 with a steal and run. Popular knuckleballer R.A. Dickey(2-5,4.50) suffered a partial tear of the plantar fascia(Trust me, this HURTS!!) attempting to cover 1st base Thursday(May 26th) but will not miss a start. Team doctors tell Dickey he cannot further damage the joint and the injury is more about pain tolerance. The veteran,  noted for his toughness, has pitched his entire career without an ulnar collateral ligament in throwing elbow, is scheduled to start Thursday June 2nd.

SAD UPDATE FOR GARY CARTER: Doctors at the Duke Medical center believe the four tumors in hall of fame catcher Gary Carter’s brain are malignant, according to statement released Friday night(May 27th). Say a prayer for a key member of the 1986 World Champions and one of the truly good guys in the history of the game. Get well, Kid!

METS NOTES: INF Justin Turner continues to impress and the rookie is hitting .438 at Citi Field. He had his 1st career 4 hit game May 27th…Interesting note regarding the Einhorn purchase.  According to ESPN NY’s Adam Rubin, Einhorn has an option to own 60% of the team in 3 years. However, principal owner Wilpon has the power to block such a move by returning the initial $200 million investment but he must allow Einhorn to keep his 33% share of the club… Small roster moves to open up a spot for Pagan: OF Fernando Martinez was optioned to Triple A, while RHP Dale Thayer was recalled. LH Pat Misch was designated for assignment post game May 27th… GM Sandy Alderson believes the Mets 2012 payroll will be somewhere between the 2011 number($140 million) and $100 million. When you consider what is coming off the books(RF Carlos Beltran, SS Jose Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, LHP Oliver Perez, possibly closer Francisco Rodriquez) , you can put a very good team on the field at $120 million.  Alderson also believes both 1B Ike Davis(Ankle) and 3B David Wright(Back)could return in the next 10 days or so but did not offer an exact date.

Wright’s back, Davis,Pagan updates, Beato Back, Justin Turner’s record setting week, Reyes amazing start, Gary Carter news

by @ 10:28 pm. Filed under 2011 Mets

Busy week for the New York Mets on and off the field. The big news was the expected placing of the teams franchise player, 3B David Wright, on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his lower back.  Wright will travel to California Monday(May 23rd) and meet with back specialist Robert Watkins in Los Angeles. “This guy, from what I understand and what I’ve been told, is one of the best back doctors in the country,” Wright said. He hopes to gain a 2nd opinion on the stress fracture  as well as what he can do to heal faster. “I know exactly what the problem is,” Wright said. “Now it’s just a matter of doing what we can to get back on the field. This is the next step.” Plan on not seeing Wright til June at the earliest.

ANGEL AND IKE:  1B Ike Davis(Left ankle sprain) has been taking ground balls and swinging the bat at the team’s minor league complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He is scheduled to come of the 15 day DL Thursday(May 26th) but Mets manager Terry Collins does not expect his 1st baseman back until a few days after. CF Angel Pagan(Left oblique strain) has played 4 rehab games with the club’s class A team. He is hitting .250 with a home run and will move up to Triple A Wednesday(May 25th). Collins expects Pagan to return to the lineup soon after.

TERRIFIC TURNER: Rookie INF Justin Turner broke 46 year old team record with an rbi in his 7th consecutive game. Mets OF and legend Ron Swoboda set the record in 1965.

BEATO BACK: Rule 5 pick up and set up reliever Pedro Beato(Right elbow tendinitis) returned from the DL May 17th and set another team record May 21st when he pitched 1 and 2 third scoreless innings, giving him 18 and 2 third innings without allowing an earned  run to start his Mets career. In 1969, Jack Dilauro went 17 and two third innings without being scored on. Hats off to Beato(1-0,0.95 ERA in 13 games) and much praise for New York GM Sandy Alderson and his staff for piecing together an excellent Mets bullpen.

JUMBO JOSE: Cannot say enough about SS Jose Reyes start to the 2011 season. Finally healthy, he is hitting .318 with 17 steals and 28 runs, the free agent to be is first in all of baseball with 6 triples and tied for 2nd with 62 hits.  Sorry to say but I believe the team will trade him by the deadline and it will be sad day in Mets history.

PRAY FOR GARY: Hall of Famer and ex Met great Gary Carter has been diagnosed with 4 small brain tumors. New York’s catcher from 1985-1989 and clean up hitter on the 1986 World Championship team, was complaining about headaches and forgetfulness before undergoing an MRI late last week. He will know  more about his condition after further examination Thursday(May 26th) at the Duke Medical center in North Carolina. Never forget Carter hitting a walk off extra inning homer in his Mets debut vs The St Louis Cardinals Neil Allen(The guy NY traded to get 1B Keith Hernandez) in April 1985. Great man and player who did a lot for fans and charity, please say a prayer for “The Kid”!

METS NOTES: Team is 22-24 as of May 22nd after losing 2 of 3 at the Yankees to open the first wave of the Subway series…. Wright stole his 9th base without getting caught May 14th and is one of only 3 National League players to steal at least 9 bases without being caught… RF Carlos Beltran, an other candidate to be traded, is hitting .280 with a team high 8 home runs and 25 rbi. Beltran and Reyes are tied with 5 others for 3rd in MLB with 14 doubles. … Top set up men RH Taylor Buchholz(1-1, 1.99 ERA, 5 holds in 20 games) and Jason Isringhausen(11 holds, 1.80 ERA in 17 games) have been outstanding paving the way for closer Francisco Rodriquez.(1-0,0.76 ERA, 15 saves in 16 chances)

BREAKING METS NEWS: Wright has stress fracture in his back

by @ 9:55 pm. Filed under 2011 Mets

New York Mets franchise face and player, 3B David Wright was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back after undergoing an  MRI Monday May 17th. The Third baseman is waiting on the results of a CT scan before the Wright and the Mets decide a course of action.  Originally injuring his back April 19th on  a tag play at third base, he tried regular treatment but did not see major improvement.  The tentative plan is place him on the DL and treat the injury with rest. Look for the Mets to recall INF-OF Nick Evans and as well as INF Ruben Tejada. Evans will play some OF and backup Daniel Murphy at first until regular 1B Ike Davis(Ankle injury) returns from the 15 day DL, the club intends to play Tejada at 2B and move INF Justin Turner to 3rd with Wright out. HUGE, HUGE loss for New York.

Mets continue recent string of strong play, Davis DL-ed, Beltran’s strange week, C Young out for season, other news

by @ 10:13 pm. Filed under 2011 Mets

Another week of newsworthy items regarding the 2011 New York Mets, who have been playing excellent baseball as of late. The team stands at 19-21 as of May 15th and have won 3 straight series including the last two on the road. Lets look at some of the recent Mets stories.

DAVIS DL-ED: The team placed 2nd year 1B Ike Davis on the DL May 12th with a sprain and bone bruise in his right ankle. Davis collided with 3B David Wright in the infield May 10th and the replays did not look good. No update on when the promising youngster will return. The team recalled OF Fernando Martinez from Triple A Buffalo to fill the roster spot.

STRUGGLING STARTERS: No secret to those who follow the team daily that the Mets starting rotation has not pitched well. The injury to RH Chris Young and starting the season without ace Johan Santana has  not helped but R.A. Dickey(1-5,5.08) has been bad. LH Jon Niese(2-4,5.03) and RH Mike Pelfrey(3-3,5.74) have been inconsistent at best. As of  May 14th, Mets starters have the 14th highest ERA(4.74) out of 16 NL teams.  The starters have a combined 11-17 record and are averaging 5 and 2 third innings per game which is 14th best in the NL.

BIG WEEK FOR BELTRAN: The Mets RF had an interesting week. Carlos Beltran had a huge day May 12th at the Colorado Rockies with 3 home runs and 6 rbi. However, he missed Saturday’s game with a swollen right eye. His vision improved overnight and he was back in the lineup Sunday May 15th. Carlos believes the eye problem was aggravated by allergies.

DEEP DEPTH: One of the major factors in the surprising start by the club has to be the contributions of the bench and injury fill ins. 2B Justin Turner, INF Daniel Murphy and CF Jason Pridie have all played key roles in the teams recent success. Turner had 5 rbis as well as his 1st ML home run May 15th. In that same game Pridie(.250,3, 10) stole home on a double steal. Murphy has struggled in May(.186, homer) but had a great April(.288,2,12) and is getting most of the playing time at 1B with Davis out.

C YA C YOUNG: Veteran RH Chris Young(1-0,1.87 in four starts) will miss the rest of the 2011 season after deciding to have season ending surgery on his shoulder. Young has a torn anterior capsule in the joint and has missed almost the last four seasons dealing with shoulder issues. The surgery is scheduled for Monday May 16th.

OTHER METS NEWS: New York is 14-6 with LF Jason Bay in the lineup… Closer Francisco Rodriquez has 12 straight saves after blowing his 1st opportunity of 2011(April 2nd vs the Marlins but he still got the win). K Rod has not allowed a run in 14 appearances since April 14th… After opening the season 5-12,  The Mets have rallied to go  14-9 over the next 23 games… Team is 4th in the National League in runs scored

Improvement continues,Reyes rumors, Young, Pagan updates, Bay impact, Other news

by @ 9:29 pm. Filed under 2011 Mets

Never a dull moment in Queens on or off the field for the 2011 New York Mets. The team has battled after a brutal start and is now a respectable 15-18 as of May 18th. When you consider the division they play in as well as the injury issues they have battled, that is about the best case scenario fans could expect.  The team is without a true #1 starting pitcher( Ace Johan Santana is out after arm surgery in late 2010) and played the first 2 weeks minus LF Jason Bay plus the team has faced almost daily financial questions regarding ownership and a pending sale of almost 40% of the club. Lets look at some of the breaking Mets news for the week.

C-YA CHRIS: Mets placed RH Chris Young(1-0,1.88 in 4 starts) was placed on the 15 day DL May 8th after an MRI showed swelling in the back of his throwing shoulder.  This is the same shoulder he injured in 2009. Not a good thing! The team called up LHP Pat Misch from Triple A but RH Dillon Gee(2-0,3.80, 6 games, 3 starts) will take Young’s rotation spot.

REYES RUMORS: With Mets shortstop Jose Reyes set to be a free agent after the 2011 season rumors of a pre trade deadline trade have started.  The San Francisco Giants were linked to #7 earlier this week in published reports.

WIN BAY: The Mets LF stats are not earth shattering(.260,homer, 4 rbi in 53 at bats) but they overall play of the team is with the Canadian in the line-up: 10-3 with, 5-15 without.

PAGAN AND PRIDLE: CF Angel Pagan(Point tenderness in his left side) remains out and the team does not have a definitive idea when he will return. Manager Terry Collins estimated May 7th that he needs 5 to 6 days of rest before beginning baseball related activities.  Pagan would then need another 12-15 days before he could rejoin the big club. If he is back by the end of May, that is a good thing. Jason Pridle has played well in Angel’s spot, hitting .279 with 3 home runs and 8 rbi in 43 at bats.

METS NOTES: RHP Pedro Beato(1-0,0.00, 10 Ks in 11 games, 17 IP) was placed on the 15 day DL May 4th with tendinitis in his throwing elbow.  he is sidelined until May 17th at the earliest.

Team ends April on up swing, 2B,Bay,Mejia updates

by @ 12:45 pm. Filed under 2011 Mets

The New York Mets ended a tough first month of the 2011 season  at 11-16 but the return of LF Jason Bay(April 21st) from a late spring training oblique injury  seemed to spark the club.  The team won 6 straight then fell to 1-3 in the next four. However, the Canadian native stabilizes the team and RF Carlos Beltran appears fully healthy after missing most of spring training with knee issues. When the entire lineup is intact, the Mets can and will score runs. Pitching wise, free agent signing Chris Young(4 starts, 1-0,1.88) has led the way. The 6’10 ex Princeton hoops star missed some time with a bicep issue but looked great in his 2nd start back from the DL Sunday May 1st at the Phillies(7 innings, 2 hits, 7 Ks, 2 walks). RH R.A. Dickey(1-3,3.82,5 starts) and LH Jon Niese(1-4,4.71,6) have also pitched better as of late. RH Mike Pelfrey(1-3,7.39,6) has been up and down, much more down and he left his last start vs the Phillies early with an illness. The bullpen has been very good, particularily RHs Pedro Beato(11 games, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.71 WHIP, 17 IP, 10 Ks) and Taylor Bucholz(13,1-0,1.15,0.96,13,16). Closer Francisco Rodriquez has quietly off to a great start, converting 6 of 7 saves, he also K-ed 15 in 11 innings.

METS NOTES: Bay has been placed on the paternity list to be with his wife as they are expecting their 3rd child. The team has recalled Lucas Duda to fill his roster spot. No update on when the Left fielder will return… Mets top prospect RHP Jenrry Mejia tore the MCL in his right throwing elbow last week and medical director Dr, David Altcheck has recommended surgery after an exam Monday(May 2nd).  Mejia is expected to seek a 2nd opinion before taking further action….. The situation at 2nd base appears to be working itself out with Daniel Murphy(.275,2,11) hitting and playing well enough defensively to  stay on the field. Justin Turner(.250, 1 rbi in 16 ABs) will still get some work but is clearly pleased with Murphy. Mets skipper Terry Collins sites his work during spring training and into April as the key to his improvement defensively. “There’s no other way to do it except that, so it becomes second nature once the game starts,” Collins said. “You don’t even think about it.”
