Series pick

by @ 10:34 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Before the Post season started, I had the Rangers and Phillies playing in the Fall Classic. I was half right(Figures I would get the wrong team from the league I cover) but I am picking Texas to win in 6. Love that lineup (Both in the field and at bat) and they have enough pitching to keep a very average San Francisco offense off the board. For my money, Texas beat the two top offenses(Tampa, Yank$$s)  in the playoffs already and the Rangers staff will feel like they are on holiday when they see the Giants lineup.

Numerous reports: Mets set to name Sandy Alderson GM

by @ 10:30 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Various media outlets are reporting the New York Mets will name MLB executive Sandy Alderson their new general manager as early as Friday.  Alderson  built the great Oakland A’s teams of the late 1980s (led by RF Jose Canseco and 1B Mark McGwire) and also worked in the commissioners office from 1998 to 2005. He was also CEO of the San Diego Padres for 4 years leaving in March 2009 and recently was helping MLB deal with corruption issues in the Dominican Republic.

Playoff Picks

by @ 12:42 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

AL: I like the Texas Rangers to come out of the American League, they will defeat Tampa in 4 games then down the Minnesota Twins, who will stun the New York Yankees in 5. The Yankees lack of pitching depth will be exposed and the Twins have the right type of team to extend that unit. Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera do not look right and they are vital to the Bronx Bombers hopes, MAJOR miscalculation by Yankees management on both the roles and personel of their pitching staff.

NL: The National League is the strongest it has been in years and you could make a strong case for all 4 teams to be in the Fall Classic but to me, the Philadelphia Phillies are still the class of the group. This team added Roy Oswalt and Roy Halladay while subtracting Cliff Lee AND RF Jayson Werth is in a contract year. The Reds are a great story , they have a tremendous offense  and strong pen but they do not possess the elite starting pitching required to take down the Fighting Phils, Philly in 4. Finally, I like the San Francisco Giants over the Atlanta Braves. SF has maybe the best bullpen in the game as well as  a vastly underrated line-up with a good blend of youth and experience. Love Bobby Cox and Billy Wagner but the Giants win in 5.

World Series: Love the Rangers and their story with both Josh Hamilton and Manager Ron Washington overcoming personal demons but the Phillies experience as well as 1-2 rotation punch is too much for the talented Texans to over come. Phillies in 6.

New leadership for the Mets: Minaya fired, Manuel option not picked up

by @ 10:37 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

After 2 tough seasons in 2009 and 2010 as well as historic collapses in 07-08, time finally ran out on the tenure of GM Omar Minaya as well as Manager Jerry Manuel; Minaya was relieved of his duties while Manuel’s 2011 option was not picked up Monday morning by Mets management.  Manuel managed the final 93 games in 2008(55-38) then the injury plagued 2009 team(70-92) and this years club(79-83). He was always good to the media and a pleasure to work with, a very good baseball person but an even better man. I am in the minority here but I think Omar Minaya’s tenure was largely more positive than negative  but he mishandled some media issues and he will take the insane Oliver Perez deal to his grave. Mets ownership will first hire a GM then allow him to select the next manager. Reports have an internal list at 32 candidates with  Chicago White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn and Minnesota Twins executive Terry Ryan being heavily linked to the team.  MLB front office executive Sandy Alderson is another name you will see rumored for the job.

Season comes to a bizarre end as Perez walks home decisive run in 14 as Mets lose 2-1 to Nationals

by @ 9:58 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Beleaguered Mets LH Oliver Perez(0-5,6.80) put a fitting cap on the 2010 New York Mets season Sunday afternoon at Citi Field, walking 3 and hitting another in only a third of an inning, helping the Washington Nationals win 2-1 in 14 innings. Perez, in the 2nd year of a $36 million dollar deal, was  removed from the rotation in May and has pitched 4 times since August 1st.  The southpaw was understandly awful but Manager Jerry Manuel was out of pitchers after his pen gave him 6 innings of scoreless relief.  Perez walked talented youngster Justin Maxwell with the bases loaded for the decisive run.   Mets right hander Mike Pelfrey(15-9,3.66)  allowed 4 hits and 1 run over 7 innings, INF Ruben Tejada had 2 hits for NY. NY finishes 2010 at 79-83 while going 47-34 at home.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, RF Jesus Feliciano, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, CFAngel Pagan, LF Lucas Duda, C Josh Thole, Tejada, Pitcher

HOMER NUMBERS: 110 home runs hit at Citi Field in 2010, 28th in the majors. In 2009, there were 130. However, the Mets teams power numbers improved greatly. After sending 95 over the fences in 2009, the team hit 130 homers in 2010.

GAME NOTES: Perez had not pitched in 27 days…. Mets COO Jeff Wilpon will meet with both Manuel and GM Omar Minaya as early as Monday to inform them of their job status for 2011. Should be a short meeting….. Nationals INF Alberto Gonzalez had two of the 6 Washington hits…. Mets RH Manny Acosta(3-2,2.95, 2 holds) did not allow a hit and K-ed 3 over 3 innings…. Class moves by Manuel: Pushed Pelfrey out of the dugout for a curtain call when he pinch hit for his pitcher and sent in defensive replacements for both Reyes and Wright so fans could cheer them as well…. Ex Met Livan Hernandez(1–12,3.66) allowed only a run and 6 hits in 6 and two third innings

Reports: Manuel and Minaya to lose jobs

by @ 11:26 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Numerous media outlets are reporting that both Mets GM Omar Minaya and Manager Jerry Manuel will both lose their jobs but could be reassigned within the organization. Manuel’s(Manager since July 17,2008) contract expires after the 2010 season while Minaya(GM since Sept 2004)  has two years left at 1.1 million per year, rumors have specific language in the GM’s deal prohibiting the team from placing him in another position. No official word from the team but this story comes as little surprise with September collapses in 2007 and 2008 as well as disastrous 2009 and 2010 campaigns seemed to place a dark cloud over the club.

Thole walk off shot leads Mets over National 2-1

by @ 11:16 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

LH Pat Misch(0-4,3.89) pitched outstanding and C Josh Thole hit a walk off shot in the 10th inning as the New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 2-1 Friday night at Citi Field. Misch struck out 10 in 8 innings and 1B Ike Davis also homered for the NY, Hisanori Takahashi collected his 10th win with 2 scoreless frames. The Mets improve to 78-82 and 46-33 at Citi Field.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, RF Jesus Feliciano, CF Angel Pagan, Davis, LF Lucas Duda, 3B Mike Hessman, Thole, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Mets went 0 for 3 with runners in scoring position… Nationals RF Mike Morse homered for Washington… 3B David Wright was given the night off with veteran Mike Hessman taking his place in the field…Davis homer gives him #19 on the year tying him with OF Ron Swoboda(1965) for 2nd all time among the clubs rookies. Mets legend Darryl Strawberry tops the list with 26 in 1983….Teams combined for 7 hits(4 for NY), Thole was the only player on either club to collect 2
