by @ 7:44 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

C David Ross hit his first career grand slam to highlight a seven run 5th inning  as the Atlanta Braves punished the New York Mets 9-3 Tuesday night at Turner Field in Georgia. Mets 2B Luis Castillo let a sure double play grounder go thru his legs in the inning, LH Jon Niese(8-7,3.70) never recovered from the error. The rookie southpaw allowed 10 hits in 4 and two third innings as well as 8 runs(5 unearned). Mets ninth inning rally secures win over Astros 3-1, K Rod to face season ending surgery

by @ 8:58 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

A 9th inning wild pitch and rbi triple from RF Jeff Francoeur helped the NY Mets defeat the Houston Astros Monday night in Texas. Pre game, the Mets learned closer Francisco”K Rod”  Rodriquez will miss the remainder of the season with a torn thumb ligament in his pitching hand, reportedly the injury was sustained in the fight with his girlfriend’s father at Citi Field last week. CF Carlos Beltran hit his 2nd homer of the season while LH Hisanori Takahashi pitched a perfect 9th for his first career save.  The win puts NY  to 59-59 on the season and the Mets improve to 23-37 away from Citi Field.

LH Jon Niese(7-5,3.38) was again very good for NY, tossing 7 innings of 1 run ball.  Over his last three starts, he has pitched 21 innings while allowing 3 earned runs. Only red hot Astros 3B Chris Johnson’s(.406 in 96 post all-star at bats) 8th inning rbi double dented the rookie southpaw.  NY hardly brought the whopping sticks tonight vs. Houston LH Wandy Rodriquez(9-11,4.04)  , who allowed only 4 hits over 7 innings. The Mets lone run vs the Astros starter was on Beltran’s(2 hits, 2 runs) 4th inning blast. 3B David Wright  almost doubled his hits for the Month of August(5 pre game) going 3 for 4 with a run.

NY rallied vs ex Met Matt Lindstrom in the 9th, taking the game. With one out, Wright and Beltran singled back to back with David taking third. That became a huge play as Lindstrom tossed a wild pitch and the Mets Third Baseman sprinted home to make it 2-1. Francoeur then tripled to center, scoring Beltran for a 2 run rally, 3-1. Houston yanked their closer for LH Gustavo Chacin but NY would not score again. Ike Davis pinch hit for Hessman and was intentionally walked. Rookie C Josh Thole then hit into a 1st to home double play to end the inning. Takahashi then tossed a 1-2-3 9th to secure the victory for the Mets.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, LF Angel Pagan, Wright, Beltran, Francoeur, 1B Mike Hessman, C Henry Blanco, 2B Luis Castillo, Pitcher

UNSUNG HERO: Team has had several players step up in 2010- Pagan and R.A. Dickey leading the way but cannot underestimate the job Takahashi has done for this team. Has pitched in every role and done reasonably well, a tremendous staff saver! Reminds me of Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield of the Boston Red Sox.

GAME NOTES: Mets stole two bases: Wright #17 and 1B Ike Davis #2… Reports have the team picking up Reyes  option($11 million) for 2011. Nothing official from either the club or player…. Mets signed #1 draft pick Matt Harvey to deal for slightly more than 2.5 according to SI.com-MLB network and WFAN’s Jon Heyman.  The junior right hander was 8-3 with a 3.09 ERA in 14 games for the North Carolina Tar Heels in 2010.. Several publications say the Mets are exploring ways to get out of Rodriquez’ contract.  The closer makes 11.5 million in 2010 as well as 2011. If he finishes 55 games in 2011, his vesting option kicks in at 17.5 million for 2012. The team says they will “have more information regarding their course of action tomorrow(Tuesday).”

Kendrick the latest pitcher to shut down Mets as Phillies win 3-1

by @ 9:26 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Kyle Kendrick(8-5,4.45) became the latest pitcher to dominate the lifeless and anemic Mets hitters Sunday night as the Phillies won 3-1 at Citi Field. The Philadelphia RH pitched into the 7th, allowing only a solo home run to SS Jose Reyes in the 3rd while CF Shane Victorino had 3 hits, a run and rbi for the winners. Sparkplug SS Jimmy Rollins scored the games first run  after a two out single, he stole 2 bases,  Victorino then doubled him home.  Reyes had two of the 6 Mets hits as this floundering team continues to waste outstanding pitching almost nightly with an offense that could not power a fleas moped.  The team went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position(3 for 34 in the series), losing the series 2-1 while going 3-3 in this 6 game home stand.  How “offensive” has the Mets hitting been? The three wins this week? All 1-0 wins!!! NY is now 58-59 on the season, falling to 36-22 at home.

The good news? RH Mike Pelfrey pitched well for his 2nd consecutive start and like so many of  his fellow  starters  he deserved better! Pelfrey(11-7,3.95) allowed 7 hits and 3 runs over 7 innings while striking out one, the big righty threw 113 pitches(67 strikes). LH Pedro Feliciano(2-6,4 holds, 3.12), RH Bobby Parnell(0-1,4 holds,3.74) and LH Hisanori Takahashi(7-6,3 holds, 4.20) tossed the 8th and 9th without further damage.

Kendrick was good for the Phillies and the clueless Mets hitters could not find a way to string together an attack. Over 6 and two thirds, the righty allowed 6 hits and the lone run with a walk and 4 Ks. Set up RHs Chad Durbin(3-1,10 holds,3.49) and Ryan Madson(4-1,5 holds,3.58) got the game to closer Brad Lidge in the 9th.  The veteran Lidge tossed a perfect frame to earn his 16th save in 20 chances and put the Mets 10 games behind the 1st place Atlanta Braves.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, RF Angel Pagan, 3B David Wright, CF Carlos Beltran, 1B Ike Davis, LF Chris Carter, C Josh Thole, 2B Luis Castillo, Pitcher

GAME NOTES:  C Rod Barajas should return from the DL stint Tuesday in Houston. Skipper Jerry Manuel maintains Thole will be the primary catcher…. Mets are 10-19 post all star break and are hitting .212 in the 2nd half…. Davis escaped serious injury when he attempted to make one of his patented circus catches of a foul ball by the Mets dugout railing in the 8th inning… Phillies stole 3 bases on Thole with Victorino swiping #3… Reyes lead off the game with a single and was called out attempting to steal 2nd. Replays showed he was safe and Manuel  argued briefly…. Weather was an issue all day with heavy rains taking a toll on the field

Halladay too much as Mets hurt Misch with both bats and gloves as Phillies win 4-0

by @ 8:03 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Philadelphia Ace Roy Halladay delivered with both his arm and bat Saturday night while the Mets left both in the locker room as the Phillies won 4-0 at Citi Field. New York collected 6 hits all night and made 2 huge errors that led to 3 runs while dooming call up LH Pat Misch’s(0-1,1.50) first start of the season. Over 6 innings, the lefty allowed 8 hits and 4 runs(1 earned) while striking out and walking 2. Halladay, who collected the first hit of the game for the Phils, scored the only run they would need in the 3rd on a single from 3B Placido Polanco.  He also was great on the mound, giving up 4 hits over 8 innings while K-ing 7 on 113 pitches.(79 strikes) The Mets drop to 58-58 on the year and they are 9 games out of first place in the NL East.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, RF Angel Pagan, 3B David Wright, CF Carlos Beltran, 1B Ike Davis, LF Fernando Martinez, C Josh Thole, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Closer Francisco Rodriquez addressed the media pre-game, apologizing to the team and fans for his altercation after Wednesday nights game. Published reports have him entering anger management while he stated he will not be able to discuss his situation further due to  legal issues….Halladay is now 15-8 with a 2.24 ERA on the year… Phillies CF Shane Victorino & Polanco had two hits apiece to lead both clubs… The Phillies scored a single run in the 5th(Tejada throwing error) and put the game away when a ball went thru Wright’s legs for the final two runs in the 6th… Relievers Bobby Parnell(1-0,4 holds,3.74) and Elmer Dessens(2-1,4 holds,1.86) pitched the 7th and 8th innings without allowing a baserunner… Reyes leadoff the 4th inning with a triple and was stranded at 3rd after Halladay got Pagan to ground out and K-ed Wright and Beltran.. Rodriquez pitched the 9th and was Booed loudly entering the game. Wright is also hearing it from the fans and is now 4 for 41 in August! …. Mets starting pitchers have allowed only 7 earned runs in 55 1/3 innings over their last 7 games… LF Jason Bay visited the team pre-game but the club had no update on when he will return from the concussion he suffered on July 23rd

Dickey’s magical season continues, Knuckleballer throws 1 hitter as Mets defeat Phillies

by @ 8:13 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey tossed the 35th one hitter in franchise history while CF Carlos Beltran doubled home the home games lone run leading the New York Mets over the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 Friday night at Citi Field.  Dickey(8-5,2.43) allowed only a clean sixth inning single to fellow starting pitcher Cole Hamels(7-9,3.33) with one out, he struck out 7 while walking 1. The Phillies lefty was also outstanding on the hill, giving up 5 hits, walking 2 and K-ing 8 Mets. His lone mistake occurred in the 6th when he allowed back to back doubles to 3B David Wright and Beltran, to make it 1-0 NY.

This well pitched game was not dull and featured a controversial disputed home run. 1B Mike Hessman hit a deep drive to left field and the ball appeared to clear the fence but after a long delay, the call was reversed by video review with Hessman placed at 3rd . The runner  was standed at 3rd base after Hamels struck out RF Jeff Francoeur and C Henry Blanco then intentionally walking 2B Ruben Tejada to get to Dickey. The Phillies lefty then got Dickey to ground out to him to end the threat.

The victory puts NY at 58-57 in 2010 while improving to 36-20 at Citi Field. The shutout situation is also incredible as the Mets have now shutout the two time defending NL champions 4 consecutive times at Citi Field. Injuries(Philly is missing stars such as  1B Ryan Howard and 2B Chase Utley) or no injuries, that is an incredible accomplishment.  That stat is even more incredible when you consider the Phillies just scored 21 runs in a 3 game series vs the Los Angeles Dodgers this week!

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, LF Angel Pagan, Wright, Beltran,  Hessman,  Francoeur,  Blanco, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Pagan stole 2nd and 3rd in the 1st inning to boost his team high total to 28… The Mets  18 shutouts lead the majors… Closer Francisco Rodriquez will be activated from his 2 day suspension and return to the team Saturday. The team will call up LH Pat Misch to start Saturday, to clear the spots for both, the team optioned LH Raul Valdez and Hisanori Takahashi to Triple A Buffalo…. Dickey is 5-1 at Citi Field.. Hessman’s homer-triple review took almost 10 minutes… Pagan got Dickey with pie in the face as he was interviewed on SNY post game

He  allegedly assaulted his Father in law after the game in the team’s Family Lounge at Citi Field. The team has suspended him without pay for two games while  he was charged with third degree assault and second degree harassment in court Thursday.  The Queens criminal court also issued two orders of protection against K Rod banning him from being around his common-law wife and Father in law.  Rodriquez will be allowed to return to his home under police escort to collect his things and baseball wise, he will not be permitted around the club during his suspension.

The season hits a low point as Mora’s 8th inning grand slam steals victory while Closer stews in bullpen, Mets lose 6-5. Post game reports: K Rod arrested for assaulting Father in-Law

by @ 9:02 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

In an up and down 2010 season, the New York Mets might have hit a low point both on and off the field Wednesday night in Flushing. The Mets bullpen imploded in the 8th, allowing 5 runs and costing LH Jon Niese a much deserved win as Colorado rallied 6-2. However, the big story out of this game occurred inside Citi Field’s Family Lounge post game.  NY closer Francisco “K Rod” Rodriquez is in police custody early Thursday morning after what is being termed a “Physical assault” on his father-in-law after the loss .  He will be charged with third-degree assault while his relative is  hospitalized  with a facial scrape and bump on his head.

Baseball wise, things were looking good for NY entering the 8th inning. SS Jose Reyes reached on a bunt to lead off the first and LF Angel Pagan then followed with a two run homer to left to make it 2-0 NY. Niese(7-5,3.50) pitched great and was in line for the win after throwing 7 innings of 5 hit ball. He allowed 1 run with 7 strikeouts while not walking a single Rockie. However, Colorado starter Jeff Francis(4-4,4.56) , coming back from missing the entire 2009 campaign after arm surgery , was also outstanding. The veteran southpaw allowed only 1 more Met hit over 6 innings while K-ing 5 and walking 1. Incredibly, NY reached base TWICE after Pagan’s homer while the Rockies staff retired the final 15  batters including 7 straight strikeouts between the 6th and 8th innings.

The entire game turned in the 8th inning when new 8th inning set up man Hisanori Takahashi(7-6,4.24) relieved Niese.  The Japanese lefty retired the first two Rockies without issue but  1B Todd Helton(Single) and LF Carlos Gonzalez(Walk) reached base. Mets manager Jerry Manuel then brought in RH Manny Acosta(2-1,3.48) to pitch to SS Troy Tulowitzki. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, The Mets walked the Colorado star infielder. Manuel stayed with Acosta and left his closer Rodriquez in the bullpen. Ex Met Melvin Mora then hit a crushing grand slam down the Left field line and it was 5-2.  A deflated Acosta gave up a walk and two singles before 2B Clint Barnes flared a ball to left to close the scoring at 6-2.  After this awful defeat, NY stands at 56-57 on the season, dropping to 34-20 at home.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, Pagan, 3B David Wright, CF Carlos Beltran, 1B Mike Hessman, RF Jeff Francoeur,C Henry Blanco, 2B Luis Castillo, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Francoeur has 99 career home runs…. The Mets have allowed an incredible 9 Grand slams on the year while hitting NONE… A Woman from Florida has filed a civil lawsuit against Mets ace Johan Santana claiming she was raped last year. The team has not comment further but the criminal  case was no pursued after the investigation found little evidence to support her claims…Wright went 0 for 4, striking out each time and drew some boos from fans… Niese has allowed 1 run or less in 11 of his 21 starts…Manuel says there is an outside chance LH Oliver Perez might start Saturday night vs The Phillies. That rotation spot was Takahashi’s… Mora’s homer was his 3rd of the season… NY still has not won back to back games since June 22-23rd….C Rod Barajas is starting to catch rehab games…   Mets were loudly booed in the 8th inning and several fans chanted “Fire Jerry”. Not a good scene in Queens!

Pelfrey outduels Jimenez as Mets sneak by Rockies 1-0

by @ 7:55 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

RH SP Mike Pelfrey(11-6,3.95) found his game Tuesday night and out pitched one of the top pitchers in the game, Colorado RHP Ubaldo Jimenez(17-2,2.61), leading the New York Mets over the Rockies 1-0 at Citi Field. Both starters were outstanding  going 7 innings while allowing 4 hits apiece. Jimenez K-ed 8 and walked 4 while Pelfrey struck out 4 ,walking 1.  SS Jose Reyes 7th inning sacrifice fly supplied the lone run of the game, relievers Hisanori Takahashi(8th) and Francisco Rodriquez(1-2-3 9th)  then took the game home for NY. K Rod earned his 25th save(30 chances) and  the Mets are now 56-56.

Pelfrey threw a career high 122 pitches and won for the first time since June 25th.  The big righty had nightmarish July: 0-3 in 5 starts, 10.02 era with 42 hits and 13 walks allowed in only 20 and two third innings!!!  The slump carried over into his first August start(3 earned in 4 and two thirds vs the 1st place Atlanta Braves) but tonight was a tremendous turn around performance for the the Mets starter.  NY tries to win back to back  for the first time in 41 games Wednesday.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, RF Fernando Martinez, CF Angel Pagan, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, LF Chris Carterm C Josh Thole, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: No further updates on the medical conditions of LF Jason Bay and C Rod Barajas…CF Carlos Beltran was given the night off but pinch hit in the 7th… Mets skipper Jerry Manuel talked about using Takahashi in the 8th set-up role. The Mets will more than likely call up  LHP Pat Misch to start Saturday…. Pagan is 3rd in the National League hitting with runners in scoring position…. NY have won 2 of the last 3 1-0, defeating The Phillies Saturday… Pelfrey has not allowed a run to the Rockies in 14 innings in 2010… Mets have a ML high 16 shutouts… Wright has 2 hits in his last 29 at bats.. Incredible stat regarding Jimenez: Not only has he allowed ONLY 7 home runs on the year, he has gone 76 starts without allowing more than ONE in a game!!!… K Rod has been outstanding as of late, retiring 20 of the last 21 hitters he has faced

Halladay good enough as Phillies hold Off Mets rally, 6-5

by @ 8:57 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Phillies ace Roy Halladay(14-8,2.34) did not have his best outing but his teammates backed him with a 5 run 3rd as Philadelphia won 6-5 over the New York Mets Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.  Clearly taxed by the 88 degree heat, Halladay allowed 5 runs on 9 hits in 7 innings but struck out 10 to earn his 14th win on the season.  With the loss, The Mets drop to 55-56 on the year and their dim playoff hopes have taken a major hit in the past 7 days.

Mets starter R.A. Dickey(7-5,2.68)  had the rare bad outing and was gone by the third inning. After being handed a 2-0 lead(Rbi singles from LF Angel Pagan and 1B Ike Davis in the 1st ), Dickey allowed a homer to CF Jayson Werth in the 2nd. The Phillies then exploded for 5 runs in the 3rd , sending the Mets knuckleballer to the showers.  LF Raul Ibanez struck the big blow of the game, a 3 run shot in the inning. An error by SS Jose Reyes early got the ball rolling and Dickey could not escape without heavy damage.

Halladay was breezing along after the Davis hit, retiring 12 of 13 Mets before NY rallies in the 6th and 7th innings. After a Reyes lead off double, Pagan singled him home to make it 6-3 in the 6th. Fellow rookies RF Fernando Martinez and C Josh Thole, hit a single and double back to back to open the 7th and scored on rbi from 2B Ruben Tejada(Ground out) and PH Chris Carter(Double).   However, Halladay escaped without further damage and the Phillies bullpen supported their ace to secure the victory. Closer Brad Lidge earned his 14th save in 18 chances and Philadelphia has won 14 of their past 17 games.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, Pagan,  CF Carlos Beltran, Wright,  Davis, Martinez,  Thole,  Tejada,Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Halladay had allowed 1 run or fewer in 5 of his last 6 outings(1.50 ERA)… NY closes this vital road trip at 2-4 and lost both series to the Phillies and Atlanta Braves….  Mets skipper Jerry Manuel said LHP Hisanori Takahashi will rejoin the rotation and start Saturday. He also stated that Jeff Francoeur and Martinez is not an everyday platoon situation…. Francoeur’s 7th inning homer enough as Santana outduels Hamels 1-0

by @ 7:50 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

RF Jeff Francoeur capitalized on the one mistake of the game and it was enough as the New York  Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park. Francoeur hit a Cole Hamels(7-8,3.45) 7th inning change up into the right field seats while NY ace Johan Santana(9-6,3.06) had a no hitter thru 5 and 2 thirds, earning the win.  The win puts the Mets exactly at the .500 mark 110 games in at 55-55 while improving to 22-36 on the road.

Both starting pitchers were outstanding and the game looked like a one run game from the start.  Hamels was excellent, striking out 11 without a walk while allowing 6 hits and the games only run on 99 pitches. The Mets ace lefty was a bit better, using 102 pitches thru 7 and third innings, giving up 5 hits with 3 walks and 6 Ks. Santana also helped his own cause with a great fielding play to record the first out in the 7th. After the first two batters reached, Johan fired a Placido Polanco bunt to 3rd for a HUGE force out. Enter Closer Francisco Rodriquez and he was on, recording the final two outs to escape the 8th inning jam .    K Rod retired the side in order in the 9th, punctuating the win with a final out K of top Phillies OF prospect Dominic Brown. With the final 5 outs,  Rodriquez earned his 24th save of the year in 29 chances and secured a HUGE win for the Mets.

METS STARTING  LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, LF Angel Pagan, CF Carlos Beltran, 3B David Wright, 1B Mike Hessman, Francoeur, C Henry Blanco, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Mets recalled OF Fernando Martinez and INF Ruben Tejada while demoting OF Jesus Feliciano. Veteran INF Alex Cora was released… Ex-NY 1B Carlos Delgado signed a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox…Francoeur’s last two home runs have been game winners, tonight and the shot vs the Braves on August 3rd….  According to a report in the NY Post, The Mets placed Feliciano,  Hessman, 2B Luis Castillo and LHP Oliver Perez on waivers Thursday…..No position player on either club had more than one hit…. Awful 8th dooms Mets as Phillies win 7-5

by @ 8:31 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Rookie LH Jon Niese pitched great for 7 innings but his bullpen could not secure the win as the Mets relief corps had an awful 8th inning, costing NY the game as the Phillies(61-48) rallied to win 7-5 Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. Trailing  2-1 in the 8th, The hosts erupted for 6 runs on 7 hits vs 3 separate pitchers to take the game over. INF Mike Hessman hit a pinch hit 3 run homer in the 9th but the deficit was too much for the Mets to overcome as Philadelphia closer Brad Lidge came in  and struck out PH Jesus Feliciano to hand NY a devastating loss.  The deflated Mets are now 54-55 on the season and drop to 21-35 on the road, while the Phillies, winners of 13 of 15, trail to the first place Atlanta Braves by only a game and a half.

Niese(7-5,3.63) was outstanding and deserved a better fate but the same could be said about almost every Johan Santana start in 2010!  The rookie lefty allowed 4 hits and 1 run over 7 innings while K-ing 7 and walking 5. After allowing a run in the first, he was in complete control and thanks to rbi hits from SS Jose Reyes(3rd) and C Josh Thole(4th) NY held a 2-1 lead going into the 8th.

Fellow rookie Bobby Parnell(0-1,4 holds, 4.12) took over and could not retire any of the 4 Phillies hitters to come to the plate. OF Ben Francisco and C Carlos Ruiz hit rbi singles vs Parnell and LH Pedro Feliciano(2-6,12 holds,3.16) entered the game. After a bunt single and bases loaded walk made it 5-2 Philadelphia, Manny Acosta(2-1,2.37) relieved Feliciano.  The big righty could not stop the bleeding however as Philly scored two more runs after a sacrifice fly and rbi single from recent trade acquisition Mike Sweeney.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, LF Angel Pagan, CF Carlos Beltran, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis,  Thole, RF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Luis Castillo, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Manager Jerry Manuel said in his pre-game address that he might skip struggling starter Mike Pelfrey’s next turn, scheduled for Tuesday vs the Rockies. LH Hisanori Takahashi or a minor leaguer would be the likely fill in candidates. The big righty has gone 0-2 with a 8.10 ERA in 4 starts since the All Star game … Ex- Met 1B Carlos Delgado, who has not played in 2010 after undergoing hip surgery, is drawing interest from the Boston Red Sox.  Boston lost star 1B Kevin Youkilis to season ending thumb surgery Thursday… Potential call ups, OF Fernando Martinez and INF Ruben Tejada, were late scratches from their Triple A game for Buffalo Friday ….. Francoeur had 3 hits to pace NY and scored 2 runs… Niese has allowed 1 run or less in 10 of his 20 starts… Mets shut out Philadelphia 3 straight times in their last series in NY, May 25-27… Amazing what the Phillies are doing, down 3  all star level players in 2B Chase Utley, 1B Ryan Howard and CF Shane Victorino

Sloppy play helps Braves defeat Mets 8-3

by @ 8:15 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

4 fielding errors and 3 homers helped ease the pain of a pitching injury as the Atlanta Braves defeated the New York Mets 8-3 Wednesday night at Turner Field in Georgia. Braves RH starter Kris Medlen(6-2,3.68)  injured his elbow in the 5th inning and it appeared to be very serious. However, The Mets could not capitalize on the injur and kicked the ball all over the field. 3 of the 4 infield starters (SS Jose Reyes, 3B David Wright and 1B Ike Davis) made errors while C Brian McCann, 3B Chipper Jones(Back to back shots in the 3rd)  and LF Melky Cabrera homered. The loss drops NY to 54-54 and the Mets road record falls to 21-35.

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey(10-6,4.16) struggles continued and the shaudy fielding behind him did not help. He lasted into the 5th inning, tossing 4 and 2 thirds while allowing 8 hits and 5 runs(3 earned). The big righty is 0-3 with a 9.59 ERA in 6 starts since his last win on June 25th. Hisanori Takahashi(7-5,4.28) took over and the poor fielding continued as he allowed two unearned runs in the 6th, Cabrera then homered vs. LH Raul Valdez(2-3,4.84) in the 8th to close the scoring. With the victory and series win, Atlanta improves to 61-46 and they now lead the NL East by 2 games over the Philadelphia Phillies.

METS STARTING LINE-IP: Reyes, LF Angel Pagan, CF Carlos Beltran,  Wright, Davis, C Josh Thole, RF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Luis Castillo, Pitcher

WRIGHT IS WRONG: The Mets franchise player went 0 for 12 in this series and has gone hitless in 15 at bats. Not a good sign for this lifeless bunch that needs its leader to perform!

GAME NOTES:  Mets are now 0  for 6 in decisive 3rd games of road series and have lost 11 of 15 overall… The Braves have won 13 of 14 Medlen starts including an incredible 11 straight. This is a BIG injury for Atlanta… The Mets have not won back to back games since June 22-23rd and even  more incredibly, the team has not won a road series vs ANY NL opponent!!!! Think about that, this team with their resources and payroll has not won 2 of 3 vs any team in the league! EMBARRASSING!!!!!… Castillo was the only Met to collect two hits, he also drove in a run .. Mets skipper Jerry Manuel was reportedly considering yanking Pelfrey from the rotation if he did not see improvement in this start, according to a report in NY Newsday.. Post game reports have the Medlen injury being to the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow, he is scheduled to have an MRI Thursday.

Bad first inning dooms Mets, Santana as Braves win 4-1

by @ 9:06 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The Atlanta Braves jumped on Mets ace Johan Santana for 3 first inning runs and New York could not recover as they lost 4-1 Monday  night at Turner Field in Georgia. OFs Matt Diaz and Rick Ankiel had rbi hits in the opening stanza while career Mets killer Chipper Jones homered in the 7th to back Atlanta starter Tim Hudson(12-5,2.36), who has allowed 2 earned runs in his last 20 2/3 innings. NY drops to .500 for the first time in two months and the club appears lifeless, the Mets have lost 2 straight, 10 of 14 while winning only 6 of their last 23 games.

Santana pitched well(7 innings, 9 hits, 4 runs)  and struck out a team season high 11  Braves but was upstaged by Hudson, who tossed 6 innings of 1 run ball. Allowing 6 hits(and an rbi double from CF Carlos Beltran in the 5th)  while walking 3, throwing 67 strikes on  107 pitches. The strong Braves bullpen finished it off with LH Jonny Venters(14 holds, 1.19) and RH Takashi Saito(14,3.38) setting up ex Met Billy Wagner, who earned his 25th save, striking out LF Angel Pagan to end the game.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, Pagan, Beltran, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, RF Jeff Francoeur, C Henry Blanco, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: The Mets will skip Hisanori Takahashi’s in the rotation this week with the day off Thursday. R.A. Dickey and Mike Pelfrey will follow Santana vs the Braves while Jon Niese, Santana and Dickey will start at the Phillies this weekend… Francoeur broke an 0 for 20 streak with an 8th inning single…NY drops to 37-74 at Turner Field since its opening in 1996… Jones has 43 home runs vs the Mets, he trails only Hall of Famers Willie Stargell(60), Mike Schmidt(49), Willie McCovey(48) and Hank Aaron(45) for round trippers vs NY. Chipper is  tied with Juan Gonzalez for 37th on the all time home run list at 434… NY is now in 4th place in the NL East falling behind the Florida Marlins by half a game…Wright has 8 rbis in the last 3 games… Castillo could not turn a double play in the first and that helped  set up the big inning

Laroche,Diamondbacks destroy Mets 14-1

by @ 5:11 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

1B Adam Laroche hit a pair of three-run homers while trade deadline acquisition RHP Daniel Hudson(2-1,4.56)  allowed 3 hits and a run in 8 innings leading the Arizona Diamondbacks over the lifeless New York Mets 14-1 Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.  The visitors, who took 2 of three and have won 5 of 6 vs NY in the past 2 weeks, pounded out 16 hits and the Mets postseason hopes have all but vanished due to their lackluster play post all star break.

Mets lefty starter Jon Niese(7-5,3.78) did not allow a hit thru 3 innings then hit the wall and too many Arizona bats. Laroche hit three run homers in the 3rd and 5th inning vs  the rookie southpaw and Niese was toast in the 5th.(Final stat line: 4 and a third innings, 7 hits, 7 runs(6 earned), 3 walks and 2 Ks) Elmer Dessens(2-1,4 holds,1.93) relieved him and allowed two more runs via a single from Hudson, making it 8-1 Arizona.  SS Stephen Drew and C John Hester hit back to back homers in the 7th and the game was completely out of hand at 10-1.  The loss drops NY to 53-53 on the season, 33-19 at Citi Field.

METS STARTING LINEUP:SS Jose Reyes, LF Jesus Feliciano, CF Angel Pagan, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, RF Jeff Francoeur, C Josh Thole, 2B Alex Cora, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Team honored 4 key members of their 1986 World Championship club with induction in the Mets Hall of Fame as RF Darryl Strawberry, SP Dwight Gooden, Manager Davey Johnson and General Manager Frank Cashen were honered in pre-game ceremonies… The Mets where showered with boos late in the game and now embark on a brutal road trip with 3 games apiece vs the 1st place Atlanta Braves and 2nd place Philadelphia Phillies…. The human white flag, LHP Oliver Perez, tossed the final 2 innings and allowed 4 runs. An average outing for Olie!!!!… Hudson was 1-1 with the White Sox and was acquired July 30th with another pitcher for SP Edwin Jackson. The righty was considered one of the top pitching prospects in the Chicago system  … Arizona RF Justin Upton extended his hitting streak to 17 with a 4th inning single… Davis drove in the lone NY run with 4th inning sacrifice fly… No Met had more than 1 hit
