Mets late rallies down Diamondbacks 5-4

by @ 8:10 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

CF Carlos Beltran’s sacrifice fly capped a late comeback leading the New York Mets over the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 Saturday night at Citi Field. Beltran’s fly ball scored Jesus Feliciano, who led off the 9th with a triple, to complete a late Mets rally. After giving up a 2-1 led in the  7th and falling behind 4-2 , 3B David Wright doubled home two to tie the game. LH SP Hisanori Takahashi(7-5,4.28) pitched well for NY, allowing a run on 6 hits over 6 innings while RF Angel Pagan had 3 hits. The win keeps the Mets in the NL East race with both the Braves and Phillies losing Saturday, NY trails Atlanta(6.5 games) and Philadelphia(3.5) while they are tied with the Florida Marlins.

Diamondbacks rookie starter Barry Enright(2-2,2.78) pitched  his 2nd strong outing vs the Mets in 12 days, allowing 2 runs and 4 hits in 6 innings. On July 20th, the righty tossed  8 innings while giving up only a homer to C Josh Thole.  After RF Justin Upton’s 3rd inning sacrifice fly made it 1-0, Wright singled home Pagan to tie the game in the botton of the inning. SS Jose Reyes added an rbi single in the 5th with the Mets using small ball to plate  a run. 2B Luis Castillo walked to lead off  and was sacrificed to 2nd by Takahashi, setting up the run scoring play.

Bobby Parnell(4 holds,2.91) had a rough outing in the 7th,allowing 4 consecutive hits and Arizona quickly built a 3-2 lead. PH Tony Abreu doubled, CF Chris Young singled and 2B Kelly Johnson put together a great at bat, drawing a walk to load the bases. Upton singled to right and it was 3-2,  LHP Pedro Feliciano(2-6, 12 holds,2.79) came into the game and another run scored on a fielders choice to 1st. However, “Perpetual” Pedro induced C Miguel Montero to hit into a double play . Manny Acosta(1-1, 2.70) then K-ed 3B Mark Reynolds to end the inning.

Mets closer Francisco Rodriquez(4-2,22 saves,2.39) pitched the ninth , striking out 2 of 3 Arizona hitters.  Feliciano, an injury replacement for LF Jason Bay who was called up Friday, crushed  a deep drive to right center on a pitch from Juan Gutierrez(0-6, 8 holds,3 saves,6.87) to open the home 9th. . Reyes then hit a shallow fly to Upton in right and NY could not score.  Arizona manager Kirk Gibson then elected to load the bases by walking Pagan and Wright, setting up a force at the plate. However, Beltran lifted a ball just short of the warning track in right that scored Feliciano without a throw from Upton.

METS STARTING LINEUP: SS Jose Reyes, RF Angel Pagan, 3B David Wright, CF Carlos Beltran, 1B Ike Davis, LF Chris Carter, C Josh Thole, 2B Luis Castillo, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Team made no moves at today’s Non-waiver Trade deadline(4 pm EST) and I feel this is a the correct decision. Team is what it is and if you see some of the names other ML teams asked about(Davis, Bobby Parnell,Jon Niese, Thole, etc) you can see why GM Omar Minaya held his cards…..NY won for only the 6th time in 20 games…Upton extended his hitting streak to 16 games… Reynolds, a childhood friend and teammate of Wright’s, struck out all 4 times he came to the plate… Mets drew 7 walks… Takahashi struck out a career high 10

Diamondbacks 5 run 6th ruins Wright as Arizona downs Mets 9-6

by @ 8:47 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Two big homers hi-lighted a 5 run sixth inning, spoiling a 2 home run ,5 rbi game from Mets 3b David Wright, helping the Arizona DiamondBacks defeat New York 9-6 Friday night at Citi Field. 2B Kelly Johnson and C Miguel Montero homered vs LH Raul Valdez(2-3,4.85) in the game changing 6th to put the visitors ahead for good.  Montero led the Arizona 13 hit attack with 3 while Johnson, CF Chris Young,1B Adam Laroche and 3B Mark Reynolds added two apiece. Wright had 3 hits while SS Jose Reyes also had 3,scoring twice. The loss drops NY to 52-51 on the year.

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey(10-5,4.10) had a rough first inning, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, a walk and error. However,  Wright homered with two on  vs Arizona starter Ian Kennedy(6-8,4.26)  in the first to tie the game. After Arizona  SS Stephen Drew doubled home a run in the 3rd, Wright homered again in the bottom of the inning with a runner on the put NY up 5-4. Pelfrey settled down and battled, pitching into the 6th. His final stat line: 5 and two third innings, 8 hits, 5 runs(4 earned), 2 walks and 4 Ks.

The game got away from NY in the 6th and it happened quickly. An error by Reyes and homer from Johnson made it 6-5, Two more hits followed  and a homer from Montero off Valdez put the score at 9-5. The Mets pen settled down and kept the margin at 4 until RF Angel Pagan drove home Reyes in the 7th to cut the lead to 3, 9-6.  The Arizona bullpen did not allow a run in the final 2 frames with ex Met Aaron Heilman earning the save in the 9th.

METS STARTING LINEUP: Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, Pagan,  Wright, CF Carlos Beltran, 1B Ike Davis, RF Jeff Francoeur, C  Henry Blanco, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: LF Jason Bay was placed on the DL with a concussion and the club recalled OF Jesus Feliciano from Triple A. The Mets big free agent signing of the off-season is still experiencing headaches, the move is retroactive to July 26th…NY is now 5-11 vs the Nationals and Diamondbacks. You reverse that number and the Mets would be in first place!!!!!… Strange stat of the night: While Wright and Reyes had 3 hits apiece, the rest of the Mets combined for ONE…. Arizona RF Justin Upton’s 6th inning single extended his hitting streak to 15 games… Reyes has 9 errors on the year… Amazingly, the Mets have lost 4 straight to the Diamondbacks, who have won only 4 of their past 15 games. The wins? Against, you guessed it: the Mets!!!

Dickey outstanding AGAIN as Mets handle Cardinals, 4-0

by @ 7:32 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey won his 7th game of the season while 1B Ike Davis backed him with a 3 run home run leading the New York Mets over the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 Thursday night at Citi Field.  LF Angel Pagan was 2 for 3 with a triple, 2 runs and walk while 3B Mike Hessman had a hit and walk, rookie C Josh Thole added a hit and 2 walks.  With the win, NY takes the series 2 games to 1 and the Mets are now 52-50 on the season, improving to 32-17 at home.

Dickey(7-4,2.32), who has been both a staff saver and godsend for the Mets, pitched into the 9th going 8 and a third innings while allowing 4 hits.  He K-ed 2 and walked the same number before tiring in the 9th. Francisco Rodriquez came in with two on but quickly retired 1B Albert Pujols and LF Matt Holliday to secure the victory and earn his 22 save. Blake Hawksworth(4-7) took the loss for St Louis, allowing 4 runs over 6 innings.  His big mistake was a 1st pitch change up to Davis in the 3rd which the prized Mets rookie deposited in the centerfield seats.

METS STARTING LINEUP: SS Jose Reyes, Pagan, CF Carlos Beltran, Davis, Hessman,  Thole, RF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Alex Cora

GAME NOTES: 3B David Wright and 2B Luis Castillo both had the day off, Hessman played 3rd while Cora was at 2B….Mets have a major league leading 14 shutouts….  If LF Jason Bay(Head) continues to have concussion like symptoms Friday, he will probably be placed on the DL according to Manager Jerry Manuel…Some rain hit the field late in the day…. NY had been 0-6-1 in series since taking two of 3 from Minnesota in June 25-27… Club has been heavily linked to Cubs LH SP Ted Lilly in trade rumors… No St Louis player had more than 1 hit

Pujols 13th inning spoils great Mets comeback as Cardinals win 8-7

by @ 9:04 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

All world 1B Albert Pujols drive in the game winner with two outs in the 13th as the St Louis Cardinals defeated New York Mets 8-7 in 13 innings Wednesday night at Citi Field in Queens. Pujols heroics spoiled an incredible rally from the Mets, who came to the plate  facing a 6-0 deficit after ace Johan  Santana(8-5,3.11) had the worst first inning of his career.  The southpaw allowed 8 hits and 6 runs in the opening stanza but rallied to pitch into the 6th.  SS Jose Reyes and 3B David Wright had 3 hits for NY while Pujols and RF John Jay did the same for St Louis. The loss drops the Mets to 51-50 on the year.

Santana just could not put hitters away early and he was hit hard, hi-lighted by a two run homer by LF Matt Holliday and 2 rbi single from Cardinals starting pitcher Jaime Garcia.  The Mets ace did settle down and saved the bullpen some heavy work, lasting into the 6th , allowing a career high 13 innings. He gave up  7 runs while walking 1 and K-ing 2 in 5 and two third innings.  The NY bats came alive , refusing to fold from the first at bat of the game. 1B Mike Hessman doubled in two in the 1st inning to make it 6-2 and the game settled down.

Holliday doubled home the 7th run in the 6th and things looked very bleak. Garcia(9-4,2.33) was breezing along even after allowing a the first home run of the year to CF Carlos Beltran in the 6th to make it 7-3. However, the Cardinals outstanding rookie was taxed by the oppressive heat and the St. Louis pen was battered by NY in the 8th. LF Angel Pagan homered with the a runner on to make it 7-5. A hit by pitch and walk brought 1B Ike Davis off the bench and the promising 1st year man singled to incredibly tie the game at 7.

The teams battled and pitched well until St Louis broke thru in the 13th. LH Pedro Feliciano hit 2b Skip Schumaker with one out and then walked the next batter. After a fielders choice grounder advanced Schumaker to 3rd, Mets manager Jerry Manuel had to pick his poison with either Pujols, who is clearly battling it physically or the red hot Holliday. He chose Pujols and the future hall of famer singled the 3rd pitch into left for the decisive run.  St. Louis closer Ryan Franklin tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the 13th to earn his 19th save.

METS LINEUP: Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, Pagan, Wright, Beltran, Hessman, RF Jeff Francoeur, C Henry Blanco, Pitcher

GUTTY GROUP: This is an easy group to root for and tonight they again showed  why. Yes, they did lose but you will not see many teams battle back like they did tonight after watching their ace pitcher get kicked around the park. This team does not have great, great talent, they have good talent, they catch the ball and can pitch. They do however have great heart and compete. That is both a reflection on GM Omar Minaya, Manuel and the players in this locker room. This organization has taken a  lot of hits as of late- and deservedly so-  for not being gritty and gutty . The 2010 New York Mets are both.

GAME NOTES: Mets fall to 10-20 in their last 30 games… Santana was 3-0 with a 0.71 ERA in July and he allowed only 3 runs in 38 innings since July 1st before Wednesday……. LF Jason Bay was feeling better but he could go on the DL if he does not make progress with a concussion in the next 48-72 hours… Wright was thrown at 2nd base in the 6th after a deep drive to left on a great throw from Holliday. Beltran followed with his homer. The Mets franchise 3b went wide of the bag, attempting to avoid the tag but  fell into short stop side of 2b and he was  out. Great play by the Cardinals… Both clubs ran out of position players and NY was forced to allow reliever Raul Valdez to bat in the botton of the 13th… Tip your hat to Pujols, who could barely walk at times and appears to be battling some type of lower leg or back issue. The best player in the sport again showed why and he is clearly in need of some R and R!

Mets bats return as NY punishes Wainwright, Cardinals,8-2

by @ 8:36 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The New York Mets offense returned after a disastrous West Coast road trip(2-9) as they pummeled one of the top pitchers in the game , RHP Adam Wainwright and the St Louis Cardinals 8-2 Tuesday night at Citi Field.  Wainwright(14-6,2.23), who had neither control nor command of his tremendous curveball, allowed 6 hits and 6 runs over 5 innings including a 3 run homer to RF Jeff Francoeur in the 4th. The runs where the first allowed by Cardinals all star  in 26 innings(0.31 July ERA) and NY became only the 2nd team to score of him in the month(29 innings before Tuesday)!  SS Jose Reyes added a his own homer, a 2 run shot while CF Carlos Beltran and 2B Luis Castillo had 2 hits apiece to pace the Mets attack. The win helps NY improve to 51-49 on the year and 31-16 at home(17 of last 24 at Citi Field).

Mets rookie LH Jon Niese(7-4,3.43) continued his string of  solid starts, allowing only 1 run and 6 hits(3 in the first)  in 6 innings while striking out 1 and walking 2.  3B David Wright  made a throwing error but had several Web Gem level plays all night while the NY bullpen contributed as well. RH Manny Acosta(1-1,3.29) allowed a run in the 7th but pitched out of a Niese jam, LH Raul Valdez(Save, hold,4.04)  pitched a 1-2-3 8th and closer Francisco Rodriquez, in need of work, K-ed Cardinals superstar 1B Albert Pujols for the final out.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, LF Angel Pagan, Wright, Beltran, 1B Ike Davis, Francoeur, C Josh Thole, Pitcher

Bench coach Dave Jauss served as Manager. Manuel was also fined an undisclosed amount… Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey checked out Ok after being pulled from his start Sunday and he will not miss a start. The Mets have adjusted their rotation for the week: Johan Santana(Wednesday), Dickey(Thursday), Mike Pelfrey(Friday), Hisanori Takahashi(Saturday) and Niese on Sunday… C Rod Barajas(Oblique) was placed on the DL Monday and called up  3B Mike Hessman, the active Minor League home run leader(311)… Pujols, who appeared to tweek side muscles early in the game, was 0 for 5 in the game and is now 0 for 10 in his last two games vs NY. Be careful Wednesday, Johan!!!!

C Josh Thole and RF Angle Pagan homered for the Mets but the club totaled only 6 hits. NY has lost 8 of 10 and drops to 49-45 on the year.

Mets starter R.A Dickey(6-4,2.73) gave the NY a quality start a day after Mike Pelfrey recorded 4 outs. He tossed 7 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits with all 3 runs scoring early in the game(2 in the 3rd, final run in 4th) Gerardo Parra’s run scoring triple hi-lighted the 2 run 4th. Meanwhile, Enright was in complete control, at one point retiring 14 straight Mets. Outside of Thole’s 8th inning home run, he was outstanding. RH Juan Gutierrez(3 saves,7.34)  allowed Pagan’s homer to open the 9th but retired the final 3 New York batters to secure the win for Arizona.

by @ 6:20 am. Filed under 2010 Mets

The Arizona Diamondbacks pounded out 18 hits, scoring 6 runs of Mets starter Mike Pelfrey(10-5,4.01) in less than 2 innings, vanishing New York 13-2 Monday night at Chase Field in Phoenix. Arizona 3B Mark Reynolds,C Miguel Montero,1B Adam Laroche and CF Chris Young had 3 hits apiece for the hosts while Young and Reynolds homered. Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy(5-7,4.02) threw 5 innings of 4 hit ball for the win, NY drops to 49-44 on the year.

Pelfrey was awful from pitch 1, needing an amazing 51 pitches to navigate the first inning. The big righty allowed 4 runs in the 1st and did not make it out of the 2nd, allowing 7 hits and 6 runs  with 2 walks and a K.  Over his last 5 starts, Pelfrey is now 1-4 with a 9.11 ERA in his last 5 starts with opponents posting a .421 average. Santana’s great day ruined by K Rod’s bad 9th but Davis bails out Mets in 10th,4-3

by @ 5:24 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Closer Francisco Rodriquez(1-2,2.68) blew his 5th save in 26 chances costing ace Johan Santana(7-5,2.87) a victory but 1B Ike Davis doubled home LF Jason Bay for the winning run in the 10th, helping The Mets win 4-3 over the host San Francisco  Giants Sunday afternoon at AT&T Park in California.  The win helps NY avoid a 3 game sweep at the hands of the Giants and head into Arizona with some momentum. 3B David Wright homered while Bay and Davis had 3 hits apiece to pace the Mets.

Santana was awesome- allowing 8 hits and a run in 8 innings while throwing 115 pitches(81 for strikes), allowing only a run scoring sacrifice fly to Giants catcher-1B- phenom Buster Posey in the 1st. The Mets scored single runs in the 3rd(Angel Pagan rbi double), 4th(Wright homer) and 8th(Davis run scoring double) to carry a 3-1 lead into the 9th. K Rod was bad early in the 9th and paid for it. After a walk and single, the Giants sacrificed both runners over. 1B Travis Ishikawa singled home both runners and the game was tied. After a double and fielders choice,  Wright threw home and a poor call by home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi helped NY escape with the game tied. Ishikawa appeared to beat the throw on a bang bang play at home but he was called out.

NY did not get off to a good start in the 10th vs Giants closer Brian Wilson with two easy outs. However, Bay singled to center and scored on Davis’ double to deep center. K Rod came back out for the 10th, quickly retiring the first two Giants batters without incident. However, veteran SS Edgar Renteria doubled to left and the drama continued. Rodriquez then walked INF Juan Uribe intentionally to face weak hitting C Eli Whiteside.(.253, 4,10 in 99 ABs) The strategy paid off and K Rod struck out the 2nd yr man to secure the win, improving the Mets to 49-43 on the year.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: CF Angel Pagan, 2B Justin Turner, Wright, LF Jason Bay, 1B Ike Davis, RF Jeff Francoeur, C Henry Blanco, SS Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

JESUS JOHAN: Santana is tied for the most starts(6) without winning when allowing one run or fewer this season.

The knee is swollen but David said post game he will play Monday…. C Josh Thole will catch R.A. Dickey Tuesday but could be demoted post game according to Manuel….CF Carlos Beltran(Off-season knee surgery) was given the day off as planned… LHP Oliver Perez(knee) could return this week but will be in a “lefty on lefty” bullpen role and not in the rotation… Giants were 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base….Posey has hit in 12 straight games… Wright’s homer puts him in sole possession of 4th place on the club’s all time list

Lincecum outduels Dickey as Giants down Mets 2-0

by @ 9:30 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Two time NL CY Young winner Tim Lincecum showed why he is one of the top pitchers in the game leading the San Francisco Giants over the New York Mets 2-0 Thursday night at AT&T Park in California. Lincecum pitched a complete game 6 hitter while 3b Pablo Sandoval’s 2nd inning rbi double supplied all the offense the hosts would need. R.A. Dickey(6-3, 2.63) pitched great too but his teammates did not support the knuckleballer.  The loss drops NY to 48-41 while the Giants have won 8 of 10.

Lincecum(10-4,2.94) was the star of the night, walking 1 and striking out 5 while throwing 110 pitches, The Mets had won 3 of the previous 4 games vs the talented and unconventional righty. Injury news was a major part of the NY story tonight with the return of CF Carlos Beltran(Off season knee surgery) and the continuing saga of SS Jose Reyes(oblique). Beltran, hitting 4th, went 1 for 4 and was caught stealing after his only hit. Reyes was in the original starting line-up but will not play until the pain is gone from his right side.

Dickey, who has been outstanding all season, needed only 96 pitches to throw 7 innings, He walked one and struck out 3 Giants. San Francisco added a vital insurance run vs the Mets bullpen in the 8th. E Elmer Dessens allowed a single to Lincecum and bunt base hit to put two runners on. NY then forced the runner at 3rd on the bunt play and things looked promising.  However, Pedro Feliciano walked Aubrey Huff to load the bases. Mets skipper Jerry Manuel summoned Bobby Parnell from the NY pen to pitch to red hot rookie Buster Posey, the Giants catcher. Posey hit a sharp grounder to 1st, Ike Davis’ throw was a bit too late and SF had a 2-0 lead. Parnell then induced a ground ball double play to end the inning.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: CF Angel Pagan, 2B Alex Cora, 3B David Wright, Beltran, 1B Ike Davis, LF Jason Bay, C Josh Thole, SS Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: 2B Luis Castillo should return sometime next weekend from his foot injury. INF-OF Fernando Tatis had shoulder surgery Wednesday and was placed on the 60 day DL… No extra base hits for NY, Sandoval’s double the lone non-single in the contest… Posey is hitting .50 (20-40) in July… SF CF Aaron Rowand had 2 hits… Beltran still does not appear to be able to run hard, a point mentioned by SNY announcers Keith Hernandez and Gary Cohen

Mets start 2nd half Thursday

by @ 9:31 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Good news on all fronts with the New York Mets returning to action Thursday night in San Francisco. The club’s franchise player, 3b David Wright, had 2 hits(ONLY player with multiple hits) and a stolen base in Tuesday’s Major League All Star game.  Better yet, the National League won the contest (AND homefield advantage in the World Series) for the first time since 1996, 3-1. Although he was replaced in the game due to his oblique injury, SS Jose Reyes should be able to play in the Giants series.  But the biggest boost for the club should be the return of superstar CF Carlos Beltran from off-season knee surgery, no team should be able the match that level of player in the July 31st non waiver trade deadline.

RIGHT WRIGHT:  Wright has now hit in 5 consecutive All Star games while carrying a  .462(6 for 13) average with a home run and RBI in his career. The Mets 3B’s streak is the longest since Hall of Famer Wade Boggs(1998-2002) and his average ties him with Al Simmons for fifth best in ASG history among players with 10 or more at bats.

Santana carries the load as Mets avoid sweep, Down Braves 3-0

by @ 6:14 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Mets ace lefty Johan Santana threw 7 dominant innings while CF Angel Pagan and 1B Ike Davis had big days at the plate leading the New York Mets over the Atlanta Braves 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.  The win helps NY avoid a sweep at the hands of the first place Braves and has them at a pleasantly surprising 48-40 entering the All Star break. Pagan had 3 of the 13 hits for NY while tripling and scoring a run while Davis(2 hits) hit a tremendous homer to centerfield in the 6th.

Santana was the story Sunday and Mets fan should be excited at how he closed out the first half.(23 innings, 14 hits and an earned run in his last 3 starts) Johan improved to 7-5 on the year(2.98 era) while not allowing a run his last two starts(16 innings) Braves starter Derek Lowe(9-8,4.35) did not pitch poorly but got the loss. He allowed a triple to Pagan in the third with two outs and 2B Alex Cora singled him home to open the scoring. Lowe(5 and a third, 8 hits and 2 runs) allowed Davis’ 458 foot bomb to open the 6th and he did not finish the inning.

Bobby Parnell(1.64,4 holds) pitched a strong 1-2-3 8th for the Mets and the NY bats added on to the lead in the bottom in the frame. OF Jesus Feliciano, who has helped off the bench, singled to open the inning and was sacrificed to 2nd by C Rod Barajas. Josh Thole then pinch hit and singled home Feliciano after a tremendous at bat vs Braves pitcher Kris Medlen. Francisco Rodriquez closed out the game with a 1-2-3 9th while earning his 21st save on the year.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Pagan,  Cora, 3B David Wright, Davis, RF Jeff Francoeur, LF Chris Carter, Barajas, SS Ruben Tejada

GAME NOTES: Carter(2 hits in 3 ABs) played LF in place of a resting Jason Bay(who is 0 for 15 vs Lowe). Weird though that today was Jason Bay bobblehead day at Citi Field!!! …. Rookie INF Ruben Tejada stole his first base…. The win was nice but Mets struggled all day at the plate hitting into 2 double plays and stranding 11 runners…When the Mets resume play Thursday, Pagan will play in RF with Carlos Beltran(Off season knee surgery) in Center and batting 4th. Looks like Francoeur will lose some at bats due to  Carlos’ return…. Mets manager Jerry Manuel thinks SS Jose Reyes(oblique strain) will be good to go when the 2nd half starts Thursday in San Francisco…Thole is 9 for 17 since being called up including 4 for 5 in a pinch hitting role…. LH SP Oliver Perez Perez allowed one run and three hits while walking 5(He is HEALTHY!!) and striking out 3 in five innings pitching for Triple A Buffalo. This was the mercurial southpaws 3rd rehab start… Davis’ 11 home runs at the All Star break ties him for 2nd in Mets rookie history with fan favorite Benny Agbayani (1999). Ron Swoboda hit 15 in 1965 … Santana is now 2-5 vs the Braves in his career..NY was 7 for 51 with runners in scoring position … Mets optioned Feliciano post game to Triple A, clearing room for Beltran. Jesus hit .278 with 11 singles, 4 doubles and two rbi in 54 at bats(20 games) since being called up June 10th. 31 yr old can play and will be back

Bad day all around: Pelfrey hit hard while Mets bats don’t hit back, Reyes injured in 4-0 defeat to Atlanta

by @ 4:22 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The Braves plated 4 runs in the 5th vs the suddenly slumping Mike Pelfrey(10-4,3.58) while all star Tim Hudson(9-4, 2.30) was outstanding, allowing 4 hits over 7 innings, leading Atlanta over the Mets 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Citi Field. Omar Infante showed whyt he made the NL all star roster, collecting 3 hits and driving home a run for the Braves while playing 2 positions(RF-3B). CF Angel Pagan was the lone shining star for the NY, collecting 3 hits and stealing 2 bases, tying him for the club lead with 19.  The loss drops the Mets to 47-40(29-16 at home) on the season while the Braves improve to 52-35. Atlanta now leads the NL East by 5 games.

Pelfrey struggled from pitch 1, walking Atlanta’s all star 2B Marin Prado to open the contest.  The big righty battled, however, escaping some jams in the 2nd and 4th  inducing 2 double plays to kill rallies. Things went sidewise big time in the 5th and Pelfrey allowed 5 singles to open the inning. With it 2-0 Atlanta, RH Elmer Dessens relieved Mike with the bases loaded. Minimizing the damage,  Dessens allowed a run on a double play grounder and it was 3-0. However, the air came out of Citi Field when Braves starting pitcher TIM HUDSON doubled home the 4th Atlanta run. TIM HUDSON!!!!!!!!

Hudson not only swung the bat, he had the NY bats completely off balance all day.  He needed only 92 pitches(58 for strikes) to throw 7 innings of shutout ball while two Braves relievers combined to throw 1-2-3 innings in the 8th and 9th.  Atlanta pounded out 15 hits(12 vs Pelfrey) with 5 players collecting two apiece led by Mets killer Chipper Jones and Hudson. LHP Hisanori Takahashi(7-3,4.15), moved to the pen from the rotation in the final days of the 1st half, pitched 3 scoreless innings while Fernando Nieve(2-3,5.26) kept the club in striking range with  a solid 9th.

PUMMELED PELFREY:  The Mets RH has not lasted more than 6 innings since June 19th and he has fooling no one Saturday. Atlanta had 12 hits(all singles) vs Pelfrey, who has allowed 33 hits and 15 runs over 13 and a third innings.(3 starts)

NO WAY JOSE:  SS Jose Reyes appeared to further injure his oblique muscle with a throw in the 7th. David Wright signaled for Manager Jerry Manuel and the trainers. Reyes left the game and has withdrawn from the All Star game, Los Angeles Dodgers Rafael Furcal has taken his spot. #7 originally hurt  his right side during batting practice June 30th and sat for 6 games before returning and being restricted to swinging righty.  Hats off toe Reyes for trying to play thru the injury but this is a serious problem now and he cannot go.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Pagan, Reyes, Wright, 1B Ike Davis, LF Jason Bay, RF Jeff Francoeur, C Rod Barajas, 2B Alex Cora

GAME NOTES: Several injury-rehab updates pre-game from Manager Jerry Manuel: CF Carlos Beltran (Off season knee surgery) will have a day off in Port St Lucie while 2B Luis Castillo(foot)  will start a rehab assigment Sunday. Pitchers John Maine(Arm fatigue) and Sean Green (side muscle) will start throwing to batters next week while LH Oliver Perez(Knee) will start at least two more minor league games. P Jenrry Mejia has no pain in his shoulder and has been cleared to throw but the club will follow a schedule with their top pitching prospect…Reyes also has 19 steals… Manuel also announced the Mets rotation for the opening of the 2nd half: R.A. Dickey, Jon Niese, Pelfrey, Johan Santana and Hisanori Takahashi… Manuel intends to bat Beltran 4th when he returns, so look for the 3-4-5-6 spots to be Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis— two righties between a switch hitter followed by a lefty.. Pelfrey has 1 win in his last 5 starts

Back to Back shots due in Mets, Dickey, Braves win 4-2

by @ 8:37 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

OF Melky Cabrera and 3B Omar Infante hit back to back homers vs Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey(6-2,2.77) to break a 7th inning tie leading the Atlanta Braves(51-35) over a the New York Mets(47-39) 4-2 Friday night at Citi Field in NY.  The victory extends Atlanta’s lead in the NL East to 4 games while the Braves win streak is at 3. CF Angel Pagan and Dickey had two hits to pace the Mets attack, who have lost back to back home games for the first time since May 9-10th.

Braves 1B Troy Glaus was involved in the first two Atlanta runs, hitting a ball SS Jose Reyes booted for an in the 1st followed by a run scoring single in the 5th.  Tommy Hanson(8-5,4.13) pitched into the 6th, allowed 7 hits and 2 runs while K-ing 6 and walking 1. 3B David Wright’s 3rd inning sacrifice fly and Reyes rbi double in the 5th plated the Mets runs. Dickey was done in by the 7th inning homers  and pitched well overall. He allowed 9 hits and 4 runs(3 earned) over 6 and two third innings. Ex Met Billy Wagner closed out the game with perfect 9th, earning his 20th save in 23 chances.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Pagan, Reyes, Wright, 1B Ike Davis, LF Jason Bay, C Josh Thole, RF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

RISP MIA: Mets went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position. “We’re just not clicking right now, We got a good team and we’ll be fine.” said Mets Manager Jerry Manuel.

GAME NOTES:  Reyes had a pre-game MRI on his right rib cage and oblique muscle. The scan came back normal and he can play as pain allows… Team recalled 1B-OF Nick Evans from Double A Binghamton while sending RHP Ryota Igarashi down. The plan is for Igarashi to stay in thru the 11 game West Coast trip to work on his secondary pitches… Infante was a late injury replacement for Mets killer Chipper Jones, who had back spasms… CF Carlos Beltran(Off-season knee surgery) went 0 for 4 in a game for Single-A St Lucie. He started in the field and had two putouts.. Dickey has lost his last two decisions

Phillips, Arroyo doom Niese, Mets, 3-1

by @ 8:37 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

2B Brandon Phillips drove in 2 runs with two hits including a homer while veteran starter Bronson Arroyo pitched 8 strong innings for his 9th victory leading the Cincinnati Reds over a game New York Mets club 3-1 Wednesday night at Citi Field in Queens. CF Angel Pagan(2 hits) homered for the lone NY run while C Josh Thole continued to swing a red hot bat(.538 in 13 at bats since call up) with two more hits. Rookie LH Jon Niese(6-3,3.61) pitched well( 7 and two third innings, 6 hits, 3 earned runs, 8 Ks and 1 walk) but was done in by two solo homers(OF Chris Heisey hit a tie breaking shot in the 7th). The Reds, leading the NL Central by 3 games, took 2 of 3 from the Mets, who drop to 47-38 in 2010.

Niese and The Mets were in complete control of the game until Phillips two out homer in the 3rd. Arroyo matched the  rookie southpaw and  was helped by some solid defense behind him. NY threatened in the 5th after advancing runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out but Arroyo retired Niese and SS Jose Reyes.  Heisey made a huge running catch with a runner on 2nd to end the inning and threat.  The Reds then scored 2 runs in the top of the 7th on Heisey’s homer and Phillips ground rule double.

The gritty Mets did not go down without a fight in the 9th vs Cincinnati closer Francisco Cordero.    1B Ike Davis lead off the inning with a deep double to center  while C Josh Thole walked with one out. However, Jesus Feliciano and Alex Cora could not deliver and The Reds closer had his 24th save in 29 chances.  Niese had won 5 straight decisions since returning from the DL June 5th. He did, however, strike out a career best 8 hitters. “We’ll take that kind of outing from a young pitcher every time.” said Mets manager Jerry Manuel.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes,  Pagan, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, LF Jason Bay,  Thole,  Feliciano,  Cora, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Mets are 29-14 at home… I am not the Mets GM but I would have to get a LOT to part with Thole. Look around MLB and the lack of good hitting catchers. They are commodities and rare! I also like the idea of the Mets having an entire infield composed of home grown players!… Bobby Parnell(1/3 of an inning, K, 2.00 era in 9 innings)  and Elmer Dessens(1 inning, 1.59( continue to pitch well out of the Mets pen…  Feliciano started in RF and had some solid at bats while giving Jeff Francoeur the night off… Reds have a ML high 27 comeback wins

Santana’s arm and bat carry Mets over Reds 3-0

by @ 8:47 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Ace lefty Johan Santana  supplied both offense(1st career home run) and defense(3 hit complete game shutout) leading the NY Mets over the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 Tuesday night at Citi Field.  LF Jason Bay drove in two huge insurance runs with a 6th inning single while SS Jose Reyes had two hits in his return to the lineup after missing 6 games with an oblique injury.  With the win, NY is now 47-37 on the year and they improve to 29-13 at home.

Santana(6-5,3.15) allowed a lead off double to Reds 2B Brandon Phillips and little else vs the team that leads the NL in runs, homers and hitting. Over 9 innings, he allowed 3 hits while striking out 5 and walking 3,  needing 113 pitches(78 strikes) to secure the victory.  The win was the southpaw’s first in 7 starts and the club has not backed Santana, evidenced by the fact NY scored 1 run in his previous 3 outings. Overall, the ace lefty ranks near the bottom in run support per start.

Santana had a tremendous 12 pitch at bat vs Reds starter LH Matt Maloney(1st ML start in 2010) in the 3rd and hit the right field foul pole with a drive for his 1st ML homer in 182 at bats(.166 career average). ” I hit it and started running, I didn’t believe it was out.” said Santana. He claims to have never hit a home run outside of “in video games.”  He did however end up with ball as a souvenir  and was very proud. “I’m on the board. At least I hit one.”

The Mets added two more runs in the 6th and their two all stars were a big part of it. Reyes lead off with a bunt that Maloney almost caught with a game effort.  After a ground out advanced Reyes to 2nd, Wright was walked intentionally. Ike Davis was retired on a close play and Bay, who now has 13 rbi in his last 9 games, then singled to CF to give NY two added runs.

The only drama left was whether Santana could finish the game and pitch his 1st complete game of the 2010 campaign. 3b Scott Rolen singled with one out and Bay misplayed(Combination drop and lost sight of ball)  a fly ball from OF Jay Bruce to make things interesting. Mets skipper Jerry Manuel, with closer Francisco Rodriquez ready to enter the game, came out and the Manager and ace chatted BRIEFLY. What did Santana say to Manuel? “I’ll finish it. Simple” according to the Lefty. Jerry stayed with his #1 and Johan responded to retire the final two Reds to clinch the win and toss the 10th complete game of his Hall of Fame career. The 3 hits for Cincinnati matched the best low hit game of  Santana’s career while this was his first shutout since September 27,2008 vs the Marlins.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, CF Angel Pagan, Wright, 1B Ike Davis, Bay, RF Jeff Francoeur, C Rod Barajas, 2B Ruben Tejada

ALL STARS: Reyes and Wright were announced as NL All Stars Sunday afternoon. Wright rallied in the fan vote and will start at 3rd Tuesday July 13th at Angels in Anaheim. The game marks Reyes 3rd appearance in the Midsummer classic, Wright has gone 5 consecutive times.  SP Tom Seaver and RF Darryl Strawberry were selected for 7 STRAIGHT NL All Star teams.

GAME NOTES: INF-OF Fernando Tatis was placed on the DL July 5th with a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder.  LHP Raul Valdez was recalled from Triple A Buffalo to take #17’s roster spot… Rookie C Josh Thole will start Wednesday…. With the Thursday’s off day and the All Star break up coming,LH SP Hisanori Takahashi will be available out of the pen…HUGE heat wave hitting the NYC area with record temperatures(103 at Central Park!!) all thru the region. Game time temp: 96 degrees!!! Club had extra emergency personnel on duty as well as bags of ice at all fan assistance centers. Several players from both clubs skipped batting practice while the Reds did their pre-game stretching in an indoor batting cage.. Pagan stole his 16th base…Manager Jerry Manuel mentioned he might rest some regulars Wednesday, naming LF Jeff Francoeur, Bay and rookie INF Ruben Tejada…Pete Falcone was the last Met to pitch a shutout and homer in the same game, back in 1981… Hats off to Maloney(5 and two thirds, 7 hits, 3 runs, 3 Ks, 1 walk) ,who traveled from Triple A Louisville to make the emergency start. Veteran starter Aaron Harang was placed on the DL with back spasms. Kid showed some guts and battled vs one of the better teams in MLB in brutal conditions…John Maine was the last Met pitcher to hit a home run. The date? July 24,2007…Tejada’s 3rd inning single broke a 0 for 16 streak

DANDY DAVID:  Wright was named NL Player of the Month for his incredible June. The Mets franchise third bagger hit .404 with 11 doubles and 6 home runs while driving in 29 runs.  David last won the award in June 2006   joining current  hitting coach and former NY great Howard Johnson as the only  Met to win the award twice.  Wright has continued to swing a hot bat, going 9 for 23 with 7 runs and rbi in July going into Tuesday’s game. NY’s franchise 3rd Baseman leads the NL in RBI(64) and has to be drawing series MVP consideration.

Niese outstanding as Mets hold on, Pick off Nationals, 5-3

by @ 7:29 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Mets rookie LH Jon Niese was outstanding for 7 innings while while 2B Alex Cora plated 3 runs with a bases loaded triple in the 4 run 4th, leading NY to a 5-3 victory over the Washington Nationals Friday night at Nationals Park.  Niese won his 5th straight start while striking out a career high 8 and drove his 1st ML run  with a double. 3B David Wright, who is having an MVP type season,  had 3 hits  while RF Jeff Francoeur added 2. The Mets are now 45-35 on the year and improved to 17-23 on the road.

Nationals starter Luis Atilano(6-5,4.32) allowed a run in the 1st on hit by pitch(SS Ruben Tejada), Wright single and a rbi ground out from 1B Ike Davis. The youngster settled down and was breezing along til the 4th where he lost the strike zone. Wright led off with deep double to center and two walks loaded the bases. However, the next two Mets were retired without producing a run.  2B Alex Cora’s bases clearing triple changed that and it was 4-0 NY. Niese then doubled home Cora and Atiliano’s night was over.  His final stat line: 3 and two third innings, 4 hits, 5 runs, 4 Ks and 2 walks.

Niese(6-2, 3.62) continued to give his club big innings, allowing only a solo shot to Mets killer and Nationals OF Josh Willingham leading off the 7th.  The rookie southpaw gave up 6 hits, K-ed 8 with no walks over 7 innings.  Fellow rookie Bobby Parnell(2 holds, 1.17) pitched a 1-2-3  8th and “Perpetual” Pedro Feliciano retired his lone batter in the 9th. Veteran RH Elmer Dessens(4 holds, 1.80) got hit around a bit in the 9th(Walk, double)  summoning closer Francisco Rodriquez with the score  5-1 and needing only 1 out . K Rod allowed 2 run scoring singles and the Nationals had a major rally going . However, Rodriquez picked off Washington OF Roger Bernandina at 2B to end the game and give the Mets a HUGE win.

METS STARTING LINE-UP:  CF Angel Pagan,  Tejada, Wright, Davis, LF Jason Bay, C Rod Barajas, Francoeur,  Cora, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: 2B Luis Castillo(bruised right heel) will play in rehab games sometime this week after missing almost a month… Mets are 25-12 since May 22… Niese is now 5-0 with a 2.43 ERA in 6 starts since returning from the disabled list June 5th… SS Jose Reyes(Back) will be out til at least Sunday… Pagan(side strain) was back in CF without restriction after missing some time and playing off and on since the Weekend

Mets bats fail Santana, Nats plate run in 9th handing NY their 9th walk off loss, 2-1

by @ 8:55 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Nationals all star 3B Ryan Zimmerman’s 9th inning sacrifice fly broke a 1-1 dead lock, helping Washington defeat the New York Mets 2-1 Thursday night at Nationals Park in D.C.  NY ace Johan Santana(5-5,3.41) pitched great after struggling in 4 straight starts(4 runs or more in each) allowing only 1 run on 6 hits while K-ing 7 and walking 2 Nationals over 7 innings .  OF Jesus Feliciano and C Henry Blanco  had two hits for the Mets while 1b Ike Davis added an rbi.  The Mets have dropped 3 of 4 and are now 44-35 on the season. Incredibly, this is NY’s 9th loss in the oppositions final at bat!

Unfortunately for Santana and the Mets,  Nationals veteran starter(and ex- Met) Livan Hernandez(6-4,2.98)  matched Santana’s zeroes after allowing a 1st inning run.  Feliciano singled to open the game and was sacrificed by rookie SS Ruben Tejada.  With one out, Davis singled him home. After that the crafty Cuban tossed 6 innings of shutout ball, allowing  7 hits and striking out 7 without walking a Met. The Nationals bullpen, a very underrated component, threw 2 scoreless frames with rookie Drew Storen(6 holds, 1.74) and closer Matt Capps(winner-1-3, 3.28) both striking out a batter.

Washington started their winning rally vs LH Pedro Feliciano(2-4, 12 holds, 2.20) on 1 out walk to Mets nemesis Willie Harris.  CF Nyjer Morgan then bunted for a base hit, putting runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out. 2B Cristian Guzman then singled to left but Jesus Feliciano agressively charged the ball, holding the runners. Mets skipper Jerry Manuel changed pitchers(Bringing in Ryota Igarashi) and put Feliciano in the infield, playing him to the short stop side of 2nd base. However, Zimmerman’s ball was too deep for even Jeff Francoeur(Great throw attempt) to prevent the winning run.

SHAME ON SELIG AGAIN: Pin this loss on the “commissioner” of Baseball Bud Selig! The Mets arrived in Washington at 7 am Thursday! Insane that he has a major market franchise team play a game the night after playing in a glorified exhibition in Puerto Rico! Wednesday’s game was delayed almost 90 minutes and the Mets had to be exhausted and it showed in their performance. Sell the game and all but I don’t think many kids in Puerto Rico dream of being the next Wayne Gretzky! Baseball is king and what this does to team in a playoff race is awful. Not needed, this commish again shows he only cares about money and selling his “image.” Anyone else notice that the Florida Marlins had the night off? I guess this is  pay back for the Mets drafting out of “slot” with Mike Pelfrey a couple of years back. Do us all a favor Bud and resign. You have lost millions of fans with your lame decisions and ideas. GO AWAY!
