Mets hold on to defeat Marlins, salvage final game of San Juan series, 6-5

by @ 9:15 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

In a game delayed by rain for almost 90 minutes, the New York Mets gutted out a much needed victory 6-5 over the Florida Marlins in the finale of the San Juan Series in Puerto Rico. This was a tough series for both teams, played in extreme heat and NY was forced to trot out several bench players in this series. SS Jose Reyes tweaked his back pre game and was a late scratch while CF Angel Pagan(side strain) also sat vs the Marlins righty starter, he is still experiencing pain when he swings from the left side.  The Marlins pounded out 17 hits but made 4 errors and played an overall sloppy game.  The victory puts NY at 44-34 on the season and they improve to 16-22 on the road.

3B David Wright had a huge 2 rbi double in the first while rookie 1B Ike Davis drove him home with a single. The Marlins did not fold and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the inning with stars middle infielders SS Hanley Ramirez and 2B Dan Uggla driving in runs. Mets starter Mike Pelfrey(10-2,2.93) did not have his “A” stuff and needed over 40 pitches to escape the 1st.  CF Jesus Feliciano added to the Mets lead in the 2nd when he singled home Alex Cora, making it 4-2. However, Florida tied it in the 5th on rbi hits from 3B Jorge Cantu(Double) and Uggla.  Pelfrey, taxed at 108 pitches in the tough San Juan heat, was removed and veteran righty Elmer Dessens(2nd win, 0.63) recorded the final out of the 5th.

Marlins starter Chris Volstad(4-7,4.45) pitched ok but was hurt by poor fielding behind him. Over 5 innings, he allowed 6 hits and 4 runs(3 earned) while K-ing 5. RH Ryota Igarashi(0-1,2 holds,8.15)  maybe threw the best inning of his Mets career in the 6th, K-ing all 3 Marlins. The strong outing seemed to inspire the club’s bats as they strung together 2 hits and some shoddy fielding into another run, via another PH single from C Josh Thole.  LF Jason Bay singled home rookie SS Ruben Tejada in the 7th and the Mets led 6-4.

Recent call up Bobby Parnell(2 holds,1.35) continues to pitch well and he gave the team 1 and two third HUGE innings. For some strange reason, Mets skipper Jerry Manuel stuck with him against a lefty with Pedro Feliciano warmed up and ready to go.  Florida scored a run vs Parnell in the 8th but Francisco Rodriquez came in to record the final out of the frame. K Rod allowed 2 hits in the 9th but he struck out PH Brian Barden to secure the win and his 18th save on the year.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Feliciano, Tejada, Wright, Davis, Bay, RF Chris Carter, C Rod Barajas, 2B Alex Cora

GAME NOTES: Mets went 18-8 in June… Reyes was begging into the game but  Manuel held him out. Does not look to be serious, Jose was in good spirits on the bench…Pelfrey allowed 12 hits… Feliciano stole his 1st base of the year…. REHAB REPORT: CF Carlos Beltran went 2 for 4 with two singles and an rbi while playing in the outfield for 9 innings for Single-A St. Lucie. LH Oliver Perez started that game, allowing 4 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings. Olie walked 1 and struck out 7, he threw 96 pitches(59 for strikes)… Wright had an incredible month, his 29 rbi in June ties a career high… The top four in the Marlin batting order all had 2 hits while C Ronny Paulino had 3

Uggla's 9th inning heroics kill Mets comeback, Marlins win 7-6

by @ 7:27 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Marlins all star 2B Dan Uggla’s 9th inning single ended a late NY rally, helping Florida defeat the Mets 7-6 Tuesday night in Game two of the San Juan series in Puerto Rico.  The Marlins scored 6 runs in two swings of the bat in the 3rd vs Mets starter Hisanori Takahashi(6-3,4.24) on home runs from Uggla(2 run) and SS Hanley Ramirez(Grand slam).   David Wright had 3 hits to pace the Mets, who drop to 43-34 on the year.

NY jumped on Marlins starter Nate Robertson(5-6,4.97) for 3 runs, 1 in the first via a sacrifice fly from LF Jason Bay.  Jose Reyes tripled home a run in the 3rd and scored following a sacrifice fly from Angel Pagan, putting NY up 3-0. However, the Florida offense exploded for 6 runs in the 3rd on the two homers from the Marlins star middle infielders, Ramirez and Uggla.

NY did not lie down and scored a run in the 7th on a ground out to cut the margin to two.  The Mets then tied it in the 9th vs Marlins closer Leo Nunez. PH Chris Carter doubled over the lead runner(C Rod Barajas) before Jeff Francoeur(ground out) and PH Josh Thole(single) plated the runs.  However, Florida won it in the ninth when 3B Jorge Cantu doubled with two outs before Uggla singled him home for the decisive run. LH Pedro Feliciano(2-3,1.99,12 holds) took the tough loss.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, Pagan, Wright,  Bay, Barajas, 1B Fernando Tatis,  Francoeur, 2B Ruben Tejada

GAME NOTES: Marlins ownership informed interim skipper Edwin Rodriquez he would remain manager thru the 2010 campaign… Tejada continues handle ML pitching, he had two hits in 3 at bats and has hit .270 on the season… Pagan returned after missing 5 games, he was pulled for Jesus Feliciano, a move that Manager Jerry Manuel described as precautionary

Nolasco, Homers too much as Marlins punish Mets,10-3

by @ 7:37 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey had his first poor outing for the Mets while  Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco was strong for 7 innings, leading Florida over NY 10-3 Monday night at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  All 3 Florida OFs homered in the contest- Cody Ross, Chris Coghlan and rookie Mike Stanton, Ross also had 3 hits. Struggling Mets LF Jason Bay hit two homer runs of his own and 3B David Wright continued his strong season with 2 hits. The loss drops NY to 43-33 on the year.(15-21 on the road)

Dickey(6-1,2.98) struggled for the first time in 8 starts as a Met and the San Juan heat seemed to really tax him. After allowing a run without a hit in the 1st, he was hit hard in the 3rd for 4 runs on 5 hits, 1B Gabe Sanchez, SS Hanley Ramirez and Ross had rbi . Dickey tossed 5 frames, allowing 5 hits and runs with 3 Ks and 1 walk.  Fernando Nieve allowed two solo shots in two innings while Ryota Igarashi gave up a 3 run shot to Stanton in the 8th to close the Marlins scoring.

Nolasco(7-6,4.84) was the story of the game and dominated the Mets, outside of Bay! Over 7 innings, he allowed 4 hits and 3 runs while K-ing while not walking a single Met. He is now 2-0 in 4 starts vs NY in 2010.  Atlanta defeated Washington tonight and now leads the Mets by a game and a half for 1st place in the NL East.

Niese and homers lead Mets past Twins,6-0

by @ 5:28 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

LH Jon Niese tossed 6 shut out innings while 3B David  Wright, 1B Ike Davis and RF Jeff Francoeur all homered, leading the New York Mets over the Minnesota Twins 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.  With the victory, the Mets close out inter-league play with a 13-5 record. CF Jesus Feliciano, Wright and Francoeur each had 3 hits to pace the 14 hit Met attack. New York has won 16 of 21 overall and stand at 28-12 for the season at Citi Field including 14 of the last 17 .

The Mets broke open a zero zero game with the long ball in the 4th and 5th innings. Francoeur homered  to left with Davis aboard in the home 4th vs Twins RH Scott Baker(6-7,4.97). Wright  hit a line drive shot also to left with Feliciano aboard in the 5th, Davis then hit the bridge  in right(434 feet) on a tremendous shot, making it 5-0. Baker(4 and a third innings, 11 hits, 6 runs with 6 Ks) allowed a triple to LF Jason Bay and then hit the showers.  C Rod Barajas then singled home vs RH Alex Burnett to plate Bay and close the scoring at 6-0.

The runs were more than enough for Niese(5-2,3.84), who has been very impressive since returning from a hamstring suffered in mid May. Over 6 frames, he allowed 4 hits while K-ing 5 and walking 3. He has won 4 of last 5 starts, the only game he did not win was the strange Tigers rain delay game on June 22th.(He sat almost 90 minutes with both the weather and big inning for NY)  RH Elmer Dessens(4 holds,0.66), LH Pedro Feliciano(12,1.74) and RH Bobby Parnell(1, no runs allowed in 4 2010 innings) all pitched an inning to secure the Mets ML leading 11th shutout.  Combining todays victory with the loss by the 1st place Atlanta Braves, the two clubs are tied in the loss column!

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, Feliciano, Wright, Davis, Bay , Barajas, Francoeur, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

WRIGHT STUFF: Wright tied Florida Marlin’s SS Hanley Ramirez ML record for inter league RBIs in a season at 24, the record was set last season. The Mets franchise 3B has also tied Dave Kingman for fourth place on the club’s  all time home run list at 154. With his 3 hits today, he is hitting .300 for the first time since April 14th.

He will not start Monday and a DL stint would not surprise anyone… Mets starters have pitched 4 shutouts and have a 3.02 ERA in 23 June games…. Niese is 4-0 with a 2.67 era in 5 starts since returning to the rotation… Bay’s triple was his 100th hit, he is only the 10th Canadian-born player to reach 1000 hits… Francoeur was a triple short of a cycle and broke out of a 3 for 22 slump… Mets took 4 of 6 from the top two teams in the AL Central

Santana's rough first inning dooms Mets, Pavano strong as Twins win, 6-0

by @ 2:51 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Johan Santana struggled from the start while Minnesota LH Carl Pavano tossed a 3 hit complete game, leading the Twins to a 6-0 victory over the Mets Saturday afternoon at Citi Field. The Mets ace southpaw threw 40 pitches and allowed 4 runs vs his former team in the 1st inning with C Joe Mauer(Single) opening the scoring, OFs Jason Kubel and Delmon Young added rbi doubles to make it 4-0.  Santana(5-5,3.55) has now allowed at least 4 runs in 4 consecutive starts. RF Jeff Francoeur had 2 of the 3 hits for NY,  The loss drops NY to 42-32 on the year.

Pavano(9-6, 3.33) tossed his 6th career shutout(1st since June 2009) while adding two hits and sacrifice, helping Minnesota end a game losing streak. “Carl picked us up big time today, “ Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. ” We got on Santana early and that’s not an easy thing to do.”  Johan gutted it out and pitched 6 innings, allowing 8 hits and 5 runs while striking ut 4 and walking 2. CF Denard Span doubled home the 5th run in the 4th and Kubel homered vs Fernando Nieve in the 9th to close out the scoring.

CRAZY CARLOS: As big a nut job as he is, would you want the Mets to trade for SP Carlos Zambrano? I think it is safe to say he is done with the Cubs, How about Oliver Perez for him? One head case for another!

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, CF Jesus Feliciano, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, LF Jason Bay, C Rod Barajas, Francoeur, 2B Alex Cora, Pitcher

SCOUT SANTANA: The Mets skipper had a good point regarding the Twins 1st inning success vs their ex- ace.“I think that when you’re playing with a team so long or faced a guy so long you tend to pick up things,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “Today early you didn’t see many swings — or attempts — at the changeup. And then when he began to mix other pitches in you started to see that they were swinging at some changeups and missing.”

GAME NOTES: Britain’s Prince Harry threw out the ceremonial first pitch… The run allowed by the Mets bullpen today is the first scored vs the relief core in 23 innings. Ryota Igarashi(1 hold,7.47) and Elmer Dessens(4 holds, 0.71) each pitched a shut out inning… CF Angel Pagan(right side strain) took some pre-game swings right handed and will swing lefty in batting practice Sunday. He was not sure if he would play Sunday, although Skipper Jerry Manuel said this morning that he would be good to go. Closer Francisco Rodriquez , who tweaked his back Friday, is fine. ..Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports  is reporting that the Seattle Mariners could trade LH Cliff Lee in the next 7 to 10 days… CF Carlos Beltran(Off season knee surgery) went 2 for 3 with a double and walk in a rehab game for Single-A St. Lucie. He batted third but did not play in the field, DH-ing… Barajas returned after missing 3 games with a sore back.. Even with the loss, NY is 27-12 at Citi Field(13 of 16)

Tigers hold on to defeat Mets, 6-5

by @ 9:04 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The Detroit Tigers jumped out to a 6-1 lead in early and hung on to defeat the game New York Mets 6-5 Thursday night at Citi Field.  LF Maglio Ordonez hit a two run homer while 2B Ryan Raburn  also homered among his  3 hits to lead the visitors. Hisanori  Takahashi(6-3,3.78) struggled all night and was pulled after he allowed the first four batters to reach in the 5th. He gave up all 6 Detroit runs on 8 hits(Both homers) while walking and striking out 4 over 4 innings.  His mound counterpart, Tigers RH Armando Galarraga(3-1,3.68),he of the infamous robbed perfect game, pitched a solid  for 6 frames.  Tiring in the 6th, he allowed 3 runs on a run scoring double from Wright, rbi ground out from 1B Ike Davis and LF Jason Bay’s single.

COKE IS IT: Clearly, the game came down to the 7th inning at bat between Wright and Coke. The Tigers southpaw was unfazed by the atmosphere,“You can’t be allowing the level of the crowd noise or who’s at the dish to get into your head,” Coke said. The Mets 3B gave Coke credit, “He didn’t throw me a pitch that I could handle,” Wright said. “I was fighting to put the ball in play. That’s kind of how good the stuff he has is.”

GAME NOTES: Wright leads the National League with 57 rbi… Strange stat of the night: Tigers went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring postion while NY was 5  for 10, Detroit won the game!… Tigers rookie sensation Brennan Boesch was 3 for 4…. Dickey's amazing season continues, Mets defeat Tigers thanks to a big night from Reyes, 5-0

by @ 9:48 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Knuckleballer RA Dickey continued his amazing season while SS Jose Reyes was a double short of the cycle, helping the NY Mets defeat the Detroit Tigers 5-0 Wednesday night at Citi Field. Dickey, an offseason signing that brought little fanfare, is now 6-0 with a 2.33 in 7 starts for the Mets and he allowed only 4 hits in 8 innings. 3B David Wright doubled home the only run the Mets would need in the 3rd while Reyes, OF Jesus Feliciano and 1B Ike Davis(2 run single) added rbi. The victory puts NY at 41-30 and they have won 21 of 28. With the win and Atlanta losing to the Chicago White Sox, the Mets are now only a half game out of 1st place in the NL East!

Dickey threw 97 pitches and was in complete control of this game but Mets skipper Jerry Manuel wanted to get his closer, Francisco Rodriquez, who had not pitched since Friday, some work. “I know that we have to keep Frankie on some type of game regimen and it’s a difficult, difficult decision that you hate to deprive a guy of a complete-game shutout,” Manuel said. “If we don’t do that, we fall back into a category of not having him sharp, and he needs to be sharp,” Manuel said. “And we found out that if he doesn’t get those innings, it becomes very difficult for him to close out games.” Dickey, who is very popular with his teammates, completely understood the situation and put the the team first. “Keeping Frankie sharp is going to win us ballgames,” Dickey said.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, CF Angel Pagan, Wright, Davis, LF Jason Bay, RF Jeff Francoeur, C Henry Blanco, 2B Ruben Tejada

GAME NOTES: Feliciano’s rbi was the first of his career…. The doctors found no structural damage and the club and Maine will decide on a course of action in the coming days… Mets are now 11-3 vs the AL in 2010. The team went 5-10 in 2009…Jenrry Mejia made his first start for Double A Binghamton, allowing a run on 2 hits while walking two and striking out 3. He threw 45 pitches in his 1st minor league start…. Pagan was taken out after experiencing muscle spasms in his right side during an at bat in the 5th inning. Manuel did not think it was serious but look for Pagan to have Thursday off… Mets had 4 2 out rbi… Reyes stole his 19th base in the 3rd even though the Tigers pitched out!!!!

Mets punish Tigers long men, crush Detroit 14-6

by @ 9:08 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Taking advantage of rain delay of almost an hour, the New York Mets batted around vs. two long relievers, helping them destroy the Detroit Tigers 14-6 Tuesday night at Citi Field.  NY batted around, scoring  8 runs in the 3rd while CF Angel Pagan was a single short of a cycle and had 4 rbis while 3B David Wright reached base five times and scored three runs. The rain delay took Tigers ace Justin Verlander(8-5,3.94,87 Ks) out of the game and the Mets drew 7 walks while Detroit hit 2 NY batters. The win puts NY at 40-30 on the year and  they are 10-3 in inter league play.

The Mets jumped on Verlander for two runs in the first(Pagan rbi triple, Wright sac fly) and had him on the ropes in the 3rd after LF Jason Bay doubled home  a run to make it 3-0. However, the rain came and the game was delayed 58 minutes. Rather than risking an injury to their ace, Detroit turned to rookie Jay Sborz, who had an tough debut.  The rookie RH hit the first two Mets batters(A ML first since April 2002) and NY put together an 8 run frame. 1B Ike Davis had two hits and two runs in the highest scoring inning of the 2010 season while SS Jose Reyes and Pagan also drove in runs.

NY manager Jerry Manuel tried hard to get starter Jon Niese(4-2,4.17) the win but with almost an hour rain delay and long turn at bat, he sat for almost 90 minutes. And he struggled, only to be pulled 1 out short of earning the win at 4 and 2 third innings. “We had a very, very long inning. It probably cost him.” said Manuel. Niese did not allow a hit thru 3 but allowed two runs in the 4th(TREMENDOUS two run shot from Tigers rookie sensation Brennan Boesch) before allowing 3 more runs in the 5th. Manuel pulled the plug with the bases loaded and two out. “The ball got soggy. I just couldn’t make adjustments.” Niese said. The talented lefty allowed 7 hits and 6 runs with 4 Ks and 3 walks while throwing 84 pitches.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, CF Angel Pagan, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, LF Jason Bay, C Rod Barajas, RF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

TOP 4 POWER: What a night for the first four batters in the NY order: 13 for 21 with 10 runs and 10 rbi!

RELIABLE RELIEF: Great job by the Mets pen tonight as Fernando Nieve(win, 2-3,5.34),Bobby Parnell and Ryota Igarashi did not allow a run in 4 and third innings

GAME NOTES: The team recalled  Parnell  from Triple A and he pitched a scoreless 8th…. Mets stole 3 bases…RHP John Maine is seeking  2nd opinion on his ailing shoulder … C Rod Barajas was the only regular to not collect a hit but  did walk twice… NY was 8 for 18 with runners on base…CF Carlos Beltran(Off-season knee surgery) will start his Minor league rehab assignment Thursday in Class A St Lucie. Under ML rules, he is allowed a maximum of 20 days on the assignment, which would put his return at the first game after the All Star break, barring any set backs…Tigers have found something in two of their young OFs CF Austin Jackson(.307 on the year, excellent D) and Boesch. The Yankees strung together 3 singles(LF Brett Gardner, Jeter and surprise bunt by RF Nick Swisher) in the 3rd before Teixeira’s slam for the only runs of the contest. Phil Hughes(10-1,3.17) pitched well after some early homer trouble while 1B Mark Teixeira and LF Curtis Granderson hit two run shots of Mike Pelfrey(9-2,2.69), helping the Yankees defeat the Mets 5-3 Saturday afternoon at the Stadium. Hughes, who earned his 10th win of the year, gave up two home runs to SS Jose Reyes(leadoff and two run bomb in the 3rd) but otherwise pitched a strong game, allowing 5 hits and walking 3 while K-ing 4. The win snaps the Mets 8 game winning streak and they are now 7-1 on their 9 game road trip.

Pelfrey gave the team 7 innings on day where he kept getting balls up, allowing a ground ball double play  run in the 1st and the two home runs in the 3rd(Teixeira) and 4th(Granderson). The big righty allowed 7 hits and 5 runs while striking out 2 and walking 3. Ryota Igarashi(0-1,9.24) pitched out of a big jam(2nd and 3rd, no outs) in the 8th after a lead off walk to DH Alex Rodriquez and 2B Robinson Cano’s fly ball to center got lost in the sun for a double.   However, the Mets righty got the next 3 outs without a run scoring. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera then came in and retired the side in order for his 16th save on the season, putting the NL NY team at 39-29 in 2010.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, CF Angel Pagan, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, LF Jason Bay, DH Chris Carter, RF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Alex Cora, C Henry Blanco

QUOTE OF THE GAME: “I didn’t have a fastball today. I ended up getting behind guys,” Pelfrey said. “They gave me a lead. I just couldn’t hold it. We’re playing well. I just feel bad.”

GAME NOTES: Mets acquired OF Jorge Padilla from the Toronto Blue Jays and assigned him to Triple-A Buffalo… What a joke this “New” Yankee Stadium is dimensions wise. Any fly ball to Left is threat to leave the park! MLB needs to have some kind of regulations or requirements for  park size. RIDICULOUS… CF Angel Pagan and Reyes had 2 hits apiece to lead the Mets…Yankees captain and SS Derek Jeter was out of the line-up with a bruised heel… Mets manager Jerry Manuel says RH SP John Maine(shoulder) will need at least one rehab start before returning from the DL.. Mets have won 3 of 5 from the Yankees in the 2010 Subway series… Today’s game featured two starters(Pelfrey and Hughes) who had at  least nine wins and a winning percentage .900 or higher for the first time since 1900!!!

by @ 11:24 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Hisanori Takahashi kept the NY Yankees off balance for 6 innings while his teammates scored 3  late runs, leading the NY Mets to a 4-0 victory Friday night at Yankee Stadium. Takahashi(6-2) allowed 4 hits and 2 walks over 6 frames while 3 relievers helped the staff earn the impressive shutout. The Mets have won 8 straight and 12 of 13 as well as 3 of 4(3 straight) from the Yankees in the Subway series.

3B David Wright got things rolling with a two out double in the 1st vs Yankees starter Javier Vasquez(6-6). Rookie 1B Ike Davis then singled and only a tremendous wide slide and touch of home plate allowed the Mets superstar third bagger to score a HUGE early run.  Takahashi and the bullpen made that run stand up while the club played solid d behind the staff.

Elmer Dessens allowed a double to open the 7th but Pedro Feliciano(11 holds) came in and pitched two strong innings. The Mets scored two huge insurance runs in the 8th when CF Angel Pagan doubled home rookie 2B Ruben Tejada and SS Jose Reyes. Jose then drove home RF Jeff Francoeur in the 9th to close the scoring, 4-0. Raul Valdez allowed 2 of the 3 Yankees he faced to reach in the 9th before closer Francisco Rodriquez entered the game. K Rod(16 saves) walked CF Brett Gardner(Great at-bat BTW) before striking out Yankees SS and captain Derek Jeter. RF Nick Swisher then popped up to Wright in foul territory to end the game. The Mets are 39-28 on the season and  have won 7 straight road games after starting 8 for 18 away from Citi Field!

METS STARTING LINEUP: Reyes, Pagan, Wright, Davis, LF Jason Bay, DH Chris Carter, C Rod Barajas, Francoeur, Tejada

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT:“I think it’s great. We’re showing emotion, we’re playing well,” Jeff Francoeur said. “Everybody’s kind of firing each other up, and we’re feeding off that. It’s fun to come to the park when you’re playing that way.”

GAME NOTES: Takahashi is now 3-1 in 6 starts…. Mets are 19-5 since May 22nd, the best record in MLB… Reyes had two hits… Team is 9-1 vs the AL in 2010… Bay returned after missing Thursday’s game with a leg bruise…Wright made several great defensive plays all night

Every starter gets a hit as Mets win 6th straight, defeat Indians 8-4

by @ 7:44 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Jon Niese won for the 3rd straight start while CF Angel Pagan drove in three runs with 3 hits, leading the NY Mets to a 8-4 win over the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field in Ohio Wednesday night. The victory is NY’s 6th straight and 10th in 11 games, the Mets are a major league best 17-5 since May 21. Every starter collected a hit and the club had a season high 7 doubles(2 by rookie 1b Ike Davis), including  4 straight in the 5 run 3rd.  The Mets, trailing the Atlanta Braves by half a game in the Nl East, are 11-2 in June, have won 17 of 22 and clinched their 2nd consecutive road series, after going O- fer the 2010 campaign.

Niese was solid( 7 innings, 8 hits, 3 runs) while continuing the run of excellent starting pitching by NY. Since May 17, Mets starters are 16-3 with a 2.61 era in 27 games.  Offensively, NY strung together 6 straight one out hits vs Indians starter Mitch Talbot(7-5) in the 3rd. Pagan, 3B David Wright, Davis and LF Jason Bay hit 4 straight doubles and the score was quickly 5-0.  Ex-Yankee Shelley Duncan homered with a runner on and two outs in the Cleveland 4th for the first two Cleveland runs.

Prized Indians prospect Carlos Santana singled home a run in the 5th but  was thrown out trying to advance to 2nd.  The Mets continued to put pressure on the young Indians and scored two more times in  the visiting 6th with rbi singles from LF Jeff Francoeur and Pagan. The game Indians did not quit and loaded the bases vs Jenrry Mejia(two walks) and Elmer Dessens in the 8th. However, a sacrifice fly and great double play started by Wright kept the damage to a minimum and the score held at 8-4. Dessens, who is one of many excellent moves made by GM Omar Minaya, allowed a bloop single in the 9th but retired the side without a run in the 9th.   The victory puts NY at 37-28 and improves their record away from Citi Field to 13-18.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, Pagan, Wright, Davis, Bay, DH Chris Carter, C Rod Barajas, Francoeur, 2B Ruben Tejada

GAME NOTES: Mets are 24-6 in games when Reyes scores… Francoeur is now hitting .275 on the year… Niese threw 104 pitches, 66 for strikes.. Wright leads the NL in rbis with 52 and he has driven in a run in 6 straight… Bay left in the 6th inning with contusion in his quadricep muscle after colliding with Indians 1B Andy Marte. Jesus Feliciano took his place in Left, Bay is considered day to day… Talbot ,who is one of the better young starters in the AL, allowed a season high 13 hits and 8 runs over 5 and two third innings. His era is now 4.21 on the year.(3.59 pre-game)

Mets ride 5 run 5th to their 5th straight victory as they defeat the Indians, 7-67

by @ 9:30 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

On a night where their ace did not have his grade “A” stuff, the New York Mets used speed and infield hits to defeat the Cleveland Indians 7-6 Tuesday night at Progressive Field in Ohio.  Lefty Johan Santana(5-3,3.13)) won for the first time in four starts thru no fault of his own, He had pitched great in his previous two starts(15 innings, no runs) yet did not have a decision. 3B David Wright, who is on fire, had 3 hits and 3 rbi while 1B Ike Davis, RF Jeff Francoeur and 2B Alex Cora added 2 hits  apiece. NY now stands at 36-28 on the season(12-18 on the road) and has won 5 straight. Amazingly, they are now a HALF game out of First in the NL East!

Wright started the scoring and run of infield hits by NY when he singled home SS Jose Reyes in the 1st. The Indians, who have roster loaded with youngsters, scored in the 2nd vs Santana on a solo shot from DH Travis Hafner and 2 run single from CF Trevor Crowe to take the lead.  SS Jason Donald made it 4-1 with rbi single in the 4th. Santana did not have his best stuff but battled for 7 innings.(7 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks, 1 K)

The Mets rallied vs Justin Masterson in the 5th and youngster was hurt by some fielding mistakes.  After a clean single and bunt, Reyes’ sacrifice was thrown away by Masterson and the score was 4-2. Wright followed with an infield single to shortstop with Cora scoring from third. However,Reyes never stopped running and beat the play at home to tie it at 4. “I knew I could score before I got to third,” Reyes said. “He tried to stop me. I went on my own. I knew I had better make it.” Davis then followed with a homer and it was quickly 6-4 NY.

NY added another run in the 7th as another error allowed a Met to reach.(CF Angel Pagan) After a Wright single and Davis walk, LF Jason Bay grounded out to make it 7-4. LH Pedro Feliciano(2-2,1.78) pitched a 1-2-3 8th  for his 9th hold. Francisco Rodriquez(2-1,2.36) allowed a two run homer to ex Yankee Shelley Duncan in the ninth but he retired Crowe to secure his 14th save.

GAME NOTES: Mets are 10-2 in June… Wright has hit .453(24-53) with 16 rbi in his last 14 games… Santana is 8-7 vs the Indians in his career and beat them for the first time since August 2006… Both 2B Luis Castillo(Bruised heel) and CF Carlos Beltran(knee) are rehabbing at the Mets spring training home in Port St. Lucie, Fla. No time table on Beltran’s return… NY has won 16 of 21 overall

Mets homer their way to series sweep, win 11-4 as Pelfrey earns 9th win

by @ 1:42 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The New York Mets hit 4 homers and Mike Pelfrey won his 9th game on the year ,helping NY defeat the Baltimore Orioles 11-4 Sunday afternoon at Camden Yards. The victory earns the Mets  a road series sweep, their first  of the 2010 campaign. 3B David Wright had 2 home runs while DH Chris Carter(3 run shot in 1st inning) and Jason Bay also left the yard. Every Met starter had a hit, The team has won four in a row and stands at 34-28 on the season.

toy story 3 buy

Pelfrey was not great while the Orioles batters found some holes to create some hits. In 6 innings, he allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks. Baltimore scored all three runs in the first two frames after Wright(2 run homer) and Carter parked Orioles starter Kevin Milwood(0-8,5.16) for 5 runs in the 1st. Milwood, a strong candidate to be wearing another uniform at the trade deadline, allowed 11 hits and 8 runs over 5 and a third innings.   In the defense of both starters, the weather was not ideal with both heat(91 degrees) and humidity making it a very difficult day to pitch.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, CF Angel Pagan, Wright, 1B Ike Davis, Bay, Carter, RF Jesus Feliciano, 2B Alex Cora, C Henry Blanco

GAME NOTES:  Big day for Jason Bay, who broke out of a 0 for 16 skid with a 4 for 4  day, needing only a Triple to complete to cycle… Feliciano, a long time minor leaguer, went 2 for 4 including a first inning single for his 1st ML hit…. RHP John Maine is in Double A Binghamton to begin his rehab from his shoulder… Jenrry Mejia(3.04) allowed a run in the 7th while LH Raul Valdez(5.16) pitched a clean ninth to secure the win… Wright and Alex Cora had 3 hits…  Lots of noise and speculation about what to do with RH Ryota Igarashi, who has struggled since returning from a hamstring injury. Maybe a trip to minors to get him back on track would work. He pitched a 1-2-3 8th Sunday… Do not look now but the Mets trail the first place Atlanta Braves by only a game and a half… The road sweep was NY’s first since September 2008 in Milwaukee

Takahashi and homers enough for Mets to win 1st road series of the year as they defeat the Orioles, 3-1

by @ 7:36 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

LH Hisanori Takahashi pitched 7 solid innings for the win while SS Jose Reyes and RF Jeff Francoeur homered, leading the NY Mets to a 3-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles Saturday night at Camden Yards. The victory guarantees the Mets will win their first road series since last September and puts the club at 34-28 on the year. “There is no doubt about it, that it’s been a big issue, a big story,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “To put that in the rearview mirror and keep playing is probably a confidence builder for the guys in the clubhouse. That they can win road games, that’s huge.”

This game was an old fashioned pitchers battle between Takahashi(5-2,3.48)and Orioles youngster LH Brian Matusz. Matusz(2-7,4.92) allowed Reyes lead off homer then settled down to toss 8 innings of 5 hit , 3 run ball. Takahashi was great, allowing 6 hits and 1 run while throwing 62 strikes out of 93 pitches after being hit hard in his two previous outings.(11 earned runs in 9 and a third innings)  The Orioles lone run scored on 2 doubles in the first by OFs Corey Patterson and Nick Markakis while NY added runs in the 6th(David Wright grounder that was not turned for a double play) and 8th.(Lead off homer from Francoeur)

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, CF Angel Pagan, DH David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, LF Jason Bay, 3B Fernando Tatis,  C Rod Barajas, RF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Ruben Tejada

DYNAMITE D: Some tremendous defensive plays in the this game led by the two Tejada’s.(Baltimore’s Miguel at 3B, Mets Ruben at 2B) The Orioles Tejada had 3 or 4 tremendous plays while the Mets rookie 2B made a great range play behind second in the 7th.

HOMEGROWN HEROES: Good times to be a Mets fan, think about this: The entire NY infield is made up of homegrown, developed talent right now. VERY COOL and  hard to do(Check around MLB!), hats off to Mets GM Omar Minaya and his staff!

GAME NOTES:  Reyes lead off shot was the 15th of his career… NY was 0-7-2 in series away from Citi Field, their longest season opening drought since 1983… Francoeur is hitting .407 in June and has hit safely in 13 of 14 contests dating back to May 27th… Baltimore was 1 for 10 with runners in scoring postion after going 3 for 17 Friday… Davis stole his 1st ML base… Many of the over 42,000 fans in attendance rooted for the the Mets. Sad to see, the once proud Orioles organization has fallen on hard times… Bay is in a mini-slump after a couple of solid weeks, he has now gone 0 for 16…. Manuel used the DH spot to give Wright a night off in the field and get Tatis some work. Fernando looked solid at 3B and started a 2nd inning double play… NY starting pitchers are 12-3 in the team’s last 20 games

Dickey and Carter star as Mets handle Orioles

by @ 7:23 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey went 7 innings while DH Chris Carter had the big blow of the night , a 3 run homer(1st of his ML career) as the New York  Mets defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 to kick off round 2 of Inter league play Friday night at Camden Yards in Maryland.  NY 3B David Wright had 3 hits and 2 rbi, while Jose Reyes added two hits and a run. Baltimore went 3 for 17 with runners in scoring position and struck out a season high 12 times, the Orioles only run scored on wild pitch by Dickey in the 7th.   The rare road win has the Mets at 33-28 on the season and improves the away record to 9-18.

Dickey(4-0,2.78) won his 4th straight start, allowing 7 hits and one run in 7 innings, “I had a really good knuckleball tonight. I had it from the beginning and felt comfortable with it, and was able to make some big pitches with it,” Dickey said. “I just kept trusting it.” Dickey escape a major jam in the 4th when the Orioles loaded the bases with none out. He struck out Luke Scott and Adam Jones before getting C Matt Wieters to pop up. “That was possibly the game right there,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said.

METS STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, CF Angel Pagan, Wright, 1B Ike Davis, LF Jason Bay, Carter, C Rod Barajas, RF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Ruben Tejada

DIAMOND DICKEY: Another great outing from the Mets knuckleballer, who threw 75 of 109 pitches for strikes.“A lot of swings and misses,” Dickey said. “When you see hitters of that caliber swing and miss, you feel good about what you have that night. That’s a good lineup. I know they don’t have a good record, but they have a lot of proven hitters over there.”

Game Notes: Every Orioles starter except 9 hitter and SS Cesar Izturis had a hit… Reyes stole his 16th base, good for 2nd in the NL…Pedro Feliciano(2-2,1.93, 7 holds) allowed 3 hits in the 8th but did not give up a run…NY is 108-107 all time in inter league play, 14-9 vs Baltimore…Orioles RH SP Jeremy Guthrie, a potential Mets trade deadline target, allowed 7 hits and 4 runs in 7 frames. He is now 3-7 with a 3.83 era….Wright is hitting .462 in his last 11 games

Niese 1 hitter helps Mets salvage double header split with Padres

by @ 10:15 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

In a day of dominating pitching performances, LH Jonathon Niese tossed a 1 hitter, helping the New York Mets win 3-0 vs the San Diego Padres in game 2 of  day-night doubleheader Thursday at Citi Field. Niese allowed only a leadoff double by OF Chris Denorfia in the 3rd while pitching The Mets first complete game on the year. “He had no-hit stuff,” catcher Rod Barajas said. “When a guy has that kind of control and command, that’s a night when something special happens.” RF Jeff Francoeur(2nd inning) and 1B Ike Davis(3rd) had rbi singles while David Wright added an rbi groundout in the 3rd.  SS Jose Reyes had 3 hits for NY, who ends a 6 game homestand 5-1.

GAME 2 STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, CF Jesus Feliciano, Wright, Davis, LF Chris Carter, Barajas, Francoeur, Ruben Tejada

NIESE NIGHT: Very impressive performance from the youngster as threw 76 strikes out of 108 pitches thrown. He did not walk a Padre while K-ing 6. He looks very strong after battling a hamstring injury, “Ever since I came off the DL, I haven’t felt anything,” said Niese, sidelined from May 17 to June 4 with a strained right hamstring. “Before that, I felt some lingering soreness. When I went on the DL, I got some rest and it’s paid off.”

TRIPLE TROUBLE: Tejada hit into a easy ground ball triple play in the 2nd, the first since 1997. In the history of the Padres, they have turned 8 in 42 years.

BELTRAN UPDATE: Injured CF Carlos Beltran went 3 for 10 in an extended spring training game in Port St Lucie,  he had  three singles.

His team  finally scored some runs for ace Johan Santana, unfortunately the Padres batters pecked away and the San Diego pitching staff retired 22 consecutive Mets, helping them defeat NY 4-2. Rookie RH Mat Latos(6-4,3.24) allowed only a single to Reyes to lead off the game and a two run homer to C Henry Blanco in the 2nd.  The loss snapped NY’s 9 game home winning streak, Padres all star 1b Adrian Gonzalez had 3 hits.

Santana, who did not pitch poorly, had not allowed a run in his last two starts(15 innings pitched) yet did not have a decision. Thursday, he could not hold an early 2-0 lead. Over 6 and two thirds, he allowed 8 hits and 4 runs while walking 4 and striking out 1. A Jerry Hairston Jr sac fly in the 4th followed by rbi hits from 2B David Eckstein and Gonzalez in the 5th put the Padres in the lead.  A Chase Headley rbi double ended the Mets ace lefty’s night, He tried to stay positive post game. “There’s not much I can do,” Santana said. “I just have to pitch my game. I know that sooner or later the offense is going to pick up.”

GAME 1 STARTING LINE-UP: Reyes, CF Angel Pagan, LF Jason Bay, Davis, Wright, Francoeur, 2B Alex Cora, Blanco, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: What a bullpen the Padres have! Luke Gregerson(15 holds,1.39) struck out all 3 Mets he faced, Mike Adams(15 holds) tossed a hitless 8th while ex Met Heath Bell got the side in order for his 17th save…. David Wright drew the Mets only walk… Mets relievers LH Pedro Feliciano, rookie Jenrry Mejia and RH Fernando Nieve did not allow a run in 2 and a third innings and only gave up 1 hit

THIS BUDS NOT FOR U: My case against MLB Commissioner Bud Selig

by @ 9:15 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

With MLB AGAIN in the news after last weeks perfect game fiasco(and I am calling it a perfect game, sue me if you don’t like it!) the world again  sees why this sport has fallen to #3 among the big 4(NFL,NBA,NHL and MLB). Simply put, this sport has been run into the ground by Commissioner Bud Selig. When leadership is required, he offers nothing. This was a simple, once in a life time play where everyone involved handled themselves with class. Except one person: SELIG! A simple correction here would have saved a good man(Umpire Jim Joyce) years of ridicule and put a positive spin on a unfortunate mistake. Bud, as he always does, takes the easy way out and tries to ram an instant replay agenda down our throats. The man has no shame and is a disgrace,  Let me count the ways in which he hurts fans.

1- TV Situation: This is one of my favorites and the single most underrated of Bud’s crimes against fans and his sport.  This sport has many fans who live outside of their favorite teams viewing area(I am a Mets fan living in Michigan) and MLB offers a great package called MLB Extra Innings, This shows all out of town games daily and is priced under $200.  Great, great thing until Saturday’s when Fox shows a game of the week. See if you want to watch the Red Sox, Phillies or Mets and their game is on vs the Fox telecast, no other games are shown on Extra Innings. This has happened to  me 2-3 times already this season. What sport with any leadership restricts viewing of paying customer?

Look at both the NBA and NFL as example. The NBA has national telecasts 2-3 nights a week on both TNT and ESPN. However, you can still watch your local team as well as their Pay package, League Pass. The NFL is in a similiar situation with national telecasts on Sundays, Monday night and Thursdays at mid season on the NFL network. The league also offers a popular Sunday Ticket package on Direct TV and is easy to access at a local sports bar as well.( I have experience with this being a Patriots fan!) However, the league had an unusual situation arise during the 2007 season. The Patriots went into week 17 undefeated and were scheduled to play the NY Giants on the NFL network. Unfortunately, the network was in early stages and not carried by many cable and dish systems. Commissioner Roger Goodell  allowed the game to  be shown on every channel the league is affiliated with! That is leadership!

Game times for post season games are another issue. Any young fan under 12 cannot stay up to watch a game now with games often starting at 830 or 9 pm EST! After having 162 games at 7 pm or 1 pm local. What kind of business does this? A poorly run one! This is a HUGE reason why MLB is #3 now, they are alienating young fans.

2- Draft: In the 3 other major American sports- NFL, NHL and NBA-small market low budget teams can succeed if they draft well and make sound financial decisions. How? Their sports have a true draft where a Lebron James, Peyton Manning and Sidney Crosby can go #1 overall and give a franchise instant credibility. However, MLB does not have financial controls over the top picks in each draft, so agents such as Scott Boras can manipulate where players are picked.  Cash poor teams such as Pittsburgh, Oakland and Kansas City can not succeed in this scenario and are stuck in a treadmill. They cannot afford to sign a Stephen Strasburg or Bryce Harper because it would completely destroy their clubs payroll, So they draft  on the cheap and fans are turned away. The Commissioner of this sport has to see this and as former owner of a small market club(The Milwaukee Brewers), he should be sympathetic. But this is the same leader who rams Red Sox-Yankees down our throats. Incredibly, large market-pay roll teams!

To his credit, Selig has tried to install a “slotting” system for draft eligible players. In this scenario, each pick is assigned a dollar-salary value similiar to the NBA draft. As example, pick one is paid 12 million, # 2 10, #3 8.5,etc. Many ML teams have followed this under the “urging” of the Commish. One team in particular, the Detroit Tigers, has ignored this and drafted players(2007 1st rounder Rick Porcello the most prominent) with no regard for this “policy.” How does Mr. Selig repay the Tigers? Check out their travel schedule sometime. They seem to play an amazing amount of late travel day games as well as Night games followed by day openers. VERY INTERESTING.

3- Leadership: This man has blindly led the sport in the steroid era and did not do a thing to stop his sport turning into Pro Wrestling until Congress called him on the carpet. Players died, careers and names were tarnished, true champions like Hank Aaron and Roger Maris lost records to obvious cheats. And please don’t make excuses for Bud, The Late 80s Oakland A’s teams with admitted users Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire heard chants of “Steriods” during playoff series vs Boston. Either he knew, didn’t care or is incompetent. I vote for all 3. And that was over 20 years ago!

The demise of the all star game also clearly falls on Selig.  We had the tie of 2002 and that spun Bud’s spin doctors out of control,  now we have home field in the World Series at stake in an EXHIBITION game! Initially, the 2002 tie was about managers not wanting to use tired pitchers(which could lead to injury) or skippers running out of players. What does the World Series have to do with that? Add players and pitchers! Simple solution! That has happened gradually but the tie occurred in 2002. This is June 2010! Another thing, this silly rule also puts pressure on All Star managers to win and that could lead to injuries. You think Joe Girardi and Charlie Manuel(who will manage this years game) care about the 28 teams? If I was Joe or Charlie, I would pitch Ubaldo Jimenez and David Price til their arms fell off.  The all star game is supposed to be about seeing your local player or your childhood hero, not about who hosts Game 7 of the World Series. AWFUL JOB!

BTW- The fact that MLB has to spruce up this game to sell it further illustrates my point about how far this sport has fallen. Look at the TV schedule and tell me what the game is on against? Re-runs or summer replacement shows. Baseball: AMERICAS PAST TIME!

Rookie 1B Ike Davis crushed an Edward Mujica offering leading off the 11th inning as the New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres 2-1 Tuesday night at Citi Field.  Mike Pelfrey was again terrific for NY and Jose Reyes homered to tie the game in the 7th as the Mets won their 9th straight at home, they  stand at a ML best 23-9 at Citi Field.“We’ve played extremely well here,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “We’re confident here.”3B David Wright, CF Angel Pagan and Reyes had 2 hits for NY,  who now are 31-27 on the year.

In the year of the pitcher, Mets fans got a treat as two of the better young arms in the NL battled toe to toe in Pelfrey and Padres LH Clayton Richard(4-3,2.72). Richard allowed 7  hits and 1 run over 7 while striking out 6 and walking 1. Only Reyes 7th inning homer, which needed to be reviewed by the umpiring crew, dented the talented southpaw. Pelfrey, who is 4-0 with a 1.19 era in his last five games, allowed back to back hits(RBI double by Adrian Gonzalez) in the first for the only San Diego run of the night.  The big righty threw 103 pitches(78 for strikes) over 9 innings, allowing 5 hits & 1 run. He K-ed 6 while walking none.

Francisco Rodriquez(2.01,12 saves) pitched a scoreless 10th and Elmer Dessens(1-1,1.35) earned his 1st victory since August 2007 with a strikeout helping LH Pedro Feliciano(2-2,2.05, 7 holds) escape a 2 out jam in the top of the inning.  Davis then hit Edward Mujica’s 3rd pitch of the inning into the Pepsi porch in rightfield(Maybe the farthest home run hit in Citi Fields 2 yr history), setting off a wild celebration at home plate.

GAME NOTES: Pelfrey threw 24 first pitch strikes to 33 Padres. A TREMENDOUS PERCENTAGE!… Pagan and Wright both stole their 11th base on the year… The 4 Mets pitchers did not walk a single Padre… NY went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position… Headley has 2 of the 6 San Diego hits… OF Jesus Feliciano was brought up to fill the roster spot created when C Omir Santos was sent down Sunday, He will play off the bench and get a spot start. The 12 year minor league veteran was hitting an amazing .385 in 53 games for Triple A Buffalo… RH John Maine threw batting practice tonight as he works to come back from shoulder weakness.. One of the more underrated relievers in the game was on display tonight as Padres RH set up man Luke Gregerson struck out 3 Mets on 11 pitches in the 9th. Check out his season stats: 1-1,1.44, 14 holds, 36 Ks and 2 walks!!!!!…As great as Pelfrey has been, Richard’s numbers over his past 6 starts are almost identical: 3-1,2.20…. Davis is now 2 for 2 with 2 homers vs Mujica

My All Time Team

by @ 9:55 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

With Ken Griffey Jr retiring, Had a ton of requests to make up an all star team of players from my era. I was born in 1971, started watching games when I was about 4, so this is from 1975 on. Based on what I saw and my opinion, no right and wrong here. Rules are real simple: 2 players at each position in the field, including DH as well as 15 man pitching staff( 6 starting pitchers, 2 swing men who excelled as starters and relievers and 7 closers). I am also including 4  players who played several positions over their careers.

C- Carlton Fisk, Mike Piazza

1B- Jeff Bagwell, Eddie Murray

2B- Ryne Sandberg, Lou Whitaker

SS- Cal Ripken Jr., Barry Larkin

DH- Edgar Martinez, Frank Thomas

LF- Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson- 2ND EASIEST POSITION TO PICK!

CF- Ken Griffey Jr, Kirby Puckett

RF- Tony Gwynn, Dave Winfield

STARTING PITCHERS: Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, Pedro Martinez, Jack Morris, Nolan Ryan and Curt Schilling

SWING PITCHERS: Dennis Eckersley, John Smoltz

RELIEVERS: Rollie Fingers, Goose Goosage, Trevor Hoffman, Dan Quisenberry, Mariano Rivera, Lee Smith, Bruce Sutter

Mets rally from 5-0 to defeat Marlins, 7-6 win 8th straight at home

by @ 9:06 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The New York  Mets rallied from a 5-0 6th inning deficit to defeat the Florida Marlins 7-6 Sunday night at Citi Field. RF Jeff Francoeur had the big hit of the game when he hit a game tying  3 run homer in the 7th while CF Angel Pagan added a huge 2 out 2 run single in the 6th.  The game was played in extremely difficult conditions with the wind blowing dirt and trash everywhere.  With the win, NY sweeps the 3 game series and now has won 8 straight at home.

Mets starter LH Hisanori Takahashi(4-2,3.80) pitched well but was bit by the homer bug. Marlins all star 2B Dan Uggla homered in the 4th while RF Cody Ross chased Takahashi with a 3 run shot in the 6th to make it 5-0.  Takahashi’s  stat line does accurately illustrate how well he pitched: 5 and a third innings, 6 hits, 5 runs, 2 walks and 5 Ks. Jenrry Mejia finished the inning and kept the score at 5-0. After NY scored 3 runs in the 6th(PH rbi single from Chris Carter and Pagan’s two run hit), The Marlins scored another run off of RH Ryota Igarashi in the 7th to make it 6-3 and things were looking very bleak for NY.

Francoeur changed that quicky in the 7th vs the Marlins bullpen with his 3 run homer vs. RH Tim Wood. The Mets RF launched Wood’s offering into the left field seats.“I know this is a big yard but I knew I got that one,” said Francoeur, who is batting .500 (18 for 36) during his 10-game hitting streak. “I was sure nothing was going to stop it.”Florida starter Ricky Nolasco, who has battled arm issues in his career, was pulled after 82 pitches in the 3 run 6th.

Marlins set up man Clay Hensley took over to start the 8th and he walked Pagan to start the inning.(Great at bat by Angel!)  Skipper Jerry Manuel then put Pagan in motion with LF Jason Bay facing a full count and his all star LF rewarded him with a single to left that advanced Pagan to 3rd. “We’ve been taking chances and our baserunners are making good reads,” Manuel said. “We felt like if it’s a breaking ball we might get a stolen base. The only thing you worry about is hitting a line drive at somebody, but with people moving around it’s a lot harder to hit a line drive at someone. If you do, you just tip your cap.” 1B Ike Davis, with the Marlins playing their infield back, grounded into a double play to score Pagan and put NY up 7-6. Closer Francisco Rodriquez(2-1,2.08) retired 3 of 4 Marlins batters(K-ing Ross to end the game) to earn his 12th save of the 2010 campaign. The Mets are now 30-27 on the year.

METS LINE-UP:  SS Jose Reyes, Pagan, Bay, Davis, 3B David Wright, C Rod Barajas, Francoeur, 2B Alex Cora, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Wright had 3 hits…. C Omir Santos was sent down to Double A post game…Veteran RH Elmer Dessens(0-1,1.42)  continues to pitch well out of the NY bullpen, recording two outs in the 8th…  Pagan stole his 10th base… 3 Marlins had 2 hits apiece: LF Chris Coghlan, INF Jorge Cantu and Ross… Hensley has  1.76 ERA… Pedro Feliciano(2-2,2.11) earned the win with a 3 pitch struck out of Cogglan, the only batter he faced

Wright and Davis back Niese’ return as Mets handle Marlins,6-1

by @ 6:38 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

3B David Wright homered and drove in 3 runs while 1B Ike Davis went 4 for 4 helping Jonathon Niese earn a victory in his return from the DL as the host New York Mets defeated the Florida Marlins 6-1 Saturday afternoon at Citi Field. The win was NY’s 7th straight at home, they are now a ML best 21-9 at home and stand at 29-27 on the season.

The Mets hit Marlins starter LH Nate Robertson hard, scoring 6 runs on 7 hits in 4 and 2 third innings. RF Jeff Francoeur(rbi single) and rookie 2B Ruben Tejada(deep double to center) drove in the games first two runs in the 2nd.  Davis singled home CF Angel Pagan with Wright following with his 2nd home run at Citi Field(1st since Opening day) to make it 5-0 in the 3rd. RH RP Brian Sanches relieved Robertson, only to allow his first batter, Wright, to double in the Mets 6th run.

Niese’ return from a hamstring strain vs the Marlins on May 16th was a huge boost for a team that was down 3 starting pitchers. Over 7 innings, he allowed 6 hits and one run while K-ing 6 and walking 1. He threw 63 strikes on 90 pitches and first pitch strikes to 15 of 27 Marlins. “It was more a relief than anything,” Niese said. Prior to Saturday, the rookie LH was 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA vs Florida this season while the victory was his first in 9 career starts at Citi Field. Jenrry Mejia and Fernando Nieve pitched the 8th and 9th innings to secure the win for NY.

METS STARTING LINEUP: SS Jose Reyes,CF Angel Pagan, LF Jason Bay, 1B Ike Davis, 3B David Wright, C Rod Barajas, RF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

PEREZ TO DL: Niese was activated for todays’s start and LH Oliver Perez was placed on the 15 day DL with patella tendinitis of the right knee. He reportedly tweaked the leg in his last outing(5/31) when he threw 2 and 2 thirds vs the Padres.

WRIGHT IS ALLRIGHT: If you are concerned about the Mets franchise 3B being frustrated with his new  home , don’t be!“This really is a park that you have to be able to hit the ball down the lines,” Wright said. “I don’t really consider myself that good of a pull hitter. I like to try to stay up the middle. It felt good to be able to pull the ball and then the next at-bat be able to stay on the ball and go up the middle. So hopefully that’s a good sign.”

GAME NOTES: NY is 8-18 on the road… The 4 hits for Davis are a career high…. Mets have now won 2 straight from the Marlins after losing 6 consecutive to their division rivals from Florida… Wright has now matched his homer run total for 2009 in 56 games and today’s homer is his 7th in 2 years at Citi Field …. Team continues to hit with runners in scoring postion, going 4 for 10 Saturday…. Mets turned 2 double plays… C Ronny Paulino and 2b Dan Uggla had two hits apiece to lead the Marlins….NY pitchers have not allowed a home run in 8 games at Citi Field… Davis broke out of  5 for 38 slump

Dickey gets 3rd win as Mets rally to defeat Marlins 4-3

by @ 8:53 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Veteran Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey won his 3rd straight start while the Mets won their major league best 20th victory at home as NY defeated the Florida Marlins 4-3 Friday night at Citi Field. Dickey has been a god send for NY, in 4 starts he is now 3-0 with a 3.20 era in 25 and third innings. Over 6 and  third, he allowed 7 hits and 3 runs while K-ing 4 and walking 2. 3 Mets had 2 hits apiece: LF Jason Bay, RF Jeff Francoeur(average up to .258 after hitting .550 in the last 6 games) and Dickey!

The Marlins scored runs in the 2nd(CF Cameron Maybin rbi single) and 3rd(Fielders choice, error at 1st) to take a 3-0 lead. The Mets rallied with 2 runs in the 3rd after Dickey and Bay drove in runs vs Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez(5-3,3.18). Francoeur tied it with a 6th inning rbi single and rookie call up Ruben Tejada fielder’s choice put NY in the lead at 4-3.

Mets skipper Jerry Manuel, forced to manage his bullpen with useless player(LH Oliver Perez) navigated the 7th and 8th innings well tonight. He used LH “Perpetual” Pedro Feliciano(7 holds, 2.14 era) to get  an out in the 7th then veteran Elmer Dessens(0-1,1.59, 3 holds) got 4 huge outs to get the game to closer Francisco Rodriquez. K- Rod, who blew his last save opportunity at San Diego Wednesday, allowed two base runners and a wild pitch advanced them to 2nd and third. However, 3B David Wright made a great fielding play and throw to retire SS Hanley Ramirez to secure the victory.  The win puts NY at 28-27 on the year and they are a ML best 20-9 at home.

METS LINEUP: SS Jose Reyes, CF Angel Pagan, LF Jason Bay, 1B Ike Davis, 3B David Wright, C Rod Barajas, RF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Ruben Tejada, Pitcher

ROSTER REDO: Mets DL-ed 2B Luis Castillo, who is battling a bone bruise in his foot, INF Ruben Tejada has been recalled and will start most of the games at 2B with Alex Cora also filling in from time to time. OF Gary Matthews Jr. was designated for assignment and C Omir Santos was brought up. According to the Adam Rubin at ESPN New York, C Henry Blanco is “banged up.”

BELTRAN UPDATE: Mets CF Carlos Beltran, who is attempting to return from a offseason knee surgery, went 2 for 6 in an extended spring training game today. He did not run the bases however.

DICKEY LOVES NY: “This is a good park to pitch in, I know that. It’s just a comfortable place to pitch,” Dickey said. “You can kind of challenge guys.”

GAME NOTES: Sanchez was 5-1 with 1.97 era in his last 8 outings and has allowed 1 home run in 11 starts… Pagan threw out Ramirez at the plate to end the third for his team-high sixth outfield assist… Reyes stole his 14th base  and drew 2 walks…. Mets continue to excel with runners in scoring position, going for 3 for 9… Ramirez, who caused a major controversy a couple of weeks ago with a lack of hustle, did not run out the last out of the game and was killed by the SNY announcing team. Bad, bad job by Hanley!

MURPHY MD: Looks like INF-OF Daniel Murphy’s injury plagued season is over before it began. Murphy, who injured a knee in spring training, suffered a high grade tear of the MCL in his right knee. He will not require surgery but will need 4 to 6 months to heal.  Feel awful for Daniel, who is a good kid and teammate. Get well, Daniel!

Griffey and Robbery in Detroit

by @ 9:03 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

You know something is big deal when one of the greatest players of all time retires and that news is not the lead story! On a night when Ken Griffey Jr called it quits,Detroit Tigers RH SP  Armando Galarraga had a career defining moment taken away from him on a missed call. 1 out after CF Austin Jackson made an incredible play to preserve a perfect game, Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera fielded a tough play to the left side of 1b and threw to a covering Galarraga at the bag. The runner, Cleveland Indians SS Jason Donald, was out and replays confirmed it. However, 1B umpire Jim Joyce, one of the better umpires in the game, amazingly called the rookie safe.  Tigers Manager Jim Leyland calmly came out and the call stood. To make matters worse, Gallarraga retired the next Tribe batter to end the game. AGAIN. Things got ugly for Joyce as several Tigers, led by C Gerald Laird, started screaming at him. Leyland then got in Joyce’ face and he clearly was not asking for dinner reservation tips.

1– MLB should reverse this call. Joyce was man enough to admit his mistake and apologized personally to Galarraga. Changing this call will do damage to no one and will make an unfortunate situation go away. This is a simple and easy correction.

2- Bad, bad job by Leyland here. Go back to the 9th inning of the Tampa Bay Rays- Toronto Blue Jays game from Tuesday night. Rays star 1B Carlos Pena was called out on a 3rd strike when he attempted to call time and the homeplate umpire refused. Rays skipper Joe Maddon, one of the better managers in the game, got tossed fighting for his player and did not go quietly. Leyland needs to go battle for his player and this historic play here, this is why Detroit pays him! Part of the coach or managers job is to take one for the players, when a team member or the roster itself is wronged. Fans don’t go to see Leyland or Maddon, they go to see Cabrera and Pena.  Bad job by the skipper of the Tigers. Out 28 is too late to get in Joyce’s face.

3- This is a rare time when ML commissioner Bud Selig can do something right and rather easily. He can kill two birds with one stone here by first reversing the call and then push the MLB players association HARD  for more instant replay. Balls and strikes should not be reviewable but everything else should be fair game.  Players, coaches and fans alike would like the call to be correct. Hopefully, this event will mark an increased role in instant replay in MLB.

4- Have to wonder if Cabrera’s reputation as a shoddy fielder factored here. He is a tremendous hitter but at 27, he is on his 3rd position.  Defense is not a big part of his game and Joyce might have had that in the back of his mind.

5- As awful as this call was, every one of you needs to see the catch by Jackson for the 1st out in the 9th. He caught the ball with his back to it basket style while sprinting in full stride. Words do not do it justice. This young man is going a long way to making people forget about fan favorite Curtis Granderson!

6- Interesting to note when you look at the replay of the 27th out, on tape the play is not close but at full speed it is. I know he was out but you begin to realize how tough this job is without replay. PAGING MR Selig and the MLB players union!

7- Have to admire the class that Galarraga showed in a tough situation. After being sent down to the minors earlier this year, he clearly is player who is happy to be in the majors and realizes how great his job is. He was genuinely sympathetic towards Joyce, who looks almost suicidal, and earned thousands(if not millions!) of fans with his grace under pressure and adversity.

8- Feel for Mr. Joyce. I kmow this will not be a popular stance but I have been covering MLB for over a decade and he is one of the better umpires in the sport. He handled this situation about as well as you can and has owned it. Lets hope the higher ups at MLB do the same and fix this.

Simply stated, one of the  best 6-8  Players I have ever seen.(I am 38, Been watching games since I was 3 or 4) Going back to players who started their careers in Mid 80s, he is top 3 with Albert Pujols and Barry Bonds.  Throw in Johnny Bench, Mike Schmidt, Nolan Ryan,George Brett,  Rickey Henderson, Mariano Rivera, and so forth and that would be my team. A tremendous defensive centerfielder who had maybe the prettiest swing I have ever seen, he totaled 630 homers over his career.  Griffey Jr missed almost 300 games from 2002-2004 with various injuries, if not for his physical breakdown, he would have made a serious run at the all time home run record. Just an amazing talent who will be missed.

Gonzalez slam wins it for Padres, 5-1 over Mets

by @ 8:29 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Padres star 1B Adrian Gonzalez hit an opposite field grand slam to left in the 11th inning leading San Diego to a 5-1 win over the New York  Mets Wednesday night in California. Mets ace lefty Johan Santana lost  a chance at  a win when pesky Padres 2B Johan David Eckstein tied the game vs NY closer Francisco Rodriquez in the 9th.  RF Jeff Francoeur drove in the only NY run with 4th inning single while LF Jason Bay had 3 hits for the Mets.

Santana threw 123 pitches in 7 innings while allowing five hits, striking out three. He had problems with his control(5 walks,18 1st pitch strikes out of 30 batters faced) but got key outs all night. ” I was battling. It was a tough one,” Santana said. ” But I always found the right pitch the get out of those situations.”  The southpaw has now thrown 15 straight scoreless innings in his last two starts and has nothing to show for it.

After Retiring the final batter of the 8th, Rodriquez allowed a lead off single to OF Tony Gywnn jr in the 9th. After stealing 2nd, K Rod struck out the next two Padres, which brought the proffessional pest Eckstein to the plate. Rodriquez found too much of the plate with a two strike pitch and Eckstein barely got the ball thru the middle of the infield to tie to the game. Gonzalez would have won the game with a double to left if not for a great 3 way relay-tag  play from Bay, 3B David Wright and C Henry Blanco that gunned down Eckstein at the plate.

METS LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, CF Angel Pagan, LF Jason Bay, 1B Ike Davis, 3B David Wright, RF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Alex Cora, C Henry Blanco, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Gonzalez had 4 hits…. Bay stole his 8th base and Reyes his 13th… Pagan and Wright struck out 3 times… Not a good series vs Valdez, who allowed 9 of 10 batters faced in 2 games to reach. He allowed 5 hits, 3 walks, 8 runs and Gonzalez homer. He had been great before this week, could he be hurt?   .. The Mets have not won back to back road games or a road series all season..2B Luis Castillo was out of the line-up dealing with both a right heel problem and bruised left foot… Padres have gone to extras in 4 of their last 10 home games

Pelfrey earns 8th victory, Davis and Wright supply the offense as Mets beat Padres 4-2

by @ 10:25 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

RH SP Mike Pelfrey won his fourth straight start(8th win of the 2010 campaign), going 8 innings as the New York Mets(27-26) defeated the San Diego Padres(31-21) Tuesday night at Petco Park in California. 3B David Wright and 1B Ike Davis(TREMENDOUS Shot to straight away CF) added home runs while driving in all 4 NY runs, RF Jeff Francoeur went 2 for 3. Pelfrey completely shut down the Padres batters a night after they scored 19 hits. He allowed 4 hits and 1 run in 8 frames while K-ing 8(Matching a career high) and walking 2.  The Padres staged a mini-rally in the 9th with some seeing eye hits vs closer Francisco Rodriquez. But after allowing 1 run, K Rod struck out the last two Padres batters to secure the victory.

LOVE LUIS: Hats off to Mets 2B Luis Castillo(Foot bruise), who is clearly playing in great pain. Have to wonder if the team should consider DL-ing him because it is painful to watch him grit it out on his damaged left foot.

BELTRAN UPDATE: Good news regarding CF Carlos Beltran’s comeback from offseason knee surgery. He is running at almost 80% and according to Beltran, he plans to play an extended spring training game within a week. The All star CF will need an additional 4-6 weeks rehab before returning to the majors but this is great news!

METS LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, Castillo, LF Jason Bay, Davis, Wright, CF Angel Pagan, C Rod Barajas, Francoeur, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Pelfrey is now 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA in his last 4 appearances… Wright had 3 hits while Davis added 2… Pelfrey struck out 8 previously vs the Atlanta Braves on June 11th, 2008… San Diego C Nick Hundley had 3 of the 7 Padres hits
