Dickey and Francoeur have big days as Mets defeat Brewers 10-4

by @ 5:42 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

R.A. Dickey pitched 7 solid innings while RF Jeff Francoeur had a huge day with the bat, leading the New York Mets to a 10-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday afternoon at Miller Park.  Dickey allowed 4 runs(3 on two home runs by Brewers 2B Richie Weeks) and 9 hits while striking out 3, the Knuckleballer is now 2-0 with a 2.84 in 3 starts for NY. Francoeur was 4 for 5 with 2 rbi and 3 runs scored, while C Henry Blanco had 3 hits.  The victory helps the Mets(26-25) salvage a game in the three game series as well a rare road win.

The Mets bats showed up all day with 4 other regulars have two hits apiece: SS Jose Reyes(Really coming along), 2B Luis Castillo, 3B David Wright and CF Angel Pagan. NY also drew 8 walks(5 from Brewers starter Randy Wolf in 5 innings) and put together consistent at bats all game. Pagan had his 4th homer of the season while Francoeur’s 2 run 9th inning double hi-lighted a 4 run frame that put the contest out of reach.“That was huge for us,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “We had some good offensive things happen.”

MAGNIFICENT MINAYA: The Mets GM Omar Minaya takes tons of hits- the name Oliver Perez will be linked to him for a LONG time- BUT look at this team and some of the subtle moves he has made. The catching situation is a team strength with Rod Barajas and Blanco playing great two way ball. Dickey and Monday’s starter Hisanori Takahashi have been god sends and Takahashi’s fellow Japanese Ryota Igarashi has also produced. I think Jason Bay will still approach 30 home runs and love Francoeur in RF as well. Heck, Southpaw Raul Valdez has also helped and the Cuban important has pitched in  a variety of roles. He is not perfect but Minaya has put together a solid roster and should be praised.

METS LINE-UP: Reyes, Castillo, LF Jason Bay, 1B Fernando Tatis, Wright, Pagan, Francoeur, Blanco, Pitcher

CLUTCH CASTILLO: Luis Castillo had the hit of the game, putting NY up for good 4-2 with a two run single up the middle.  “The game was tight. I wanted to get a hit in that moment,” Castillo said of his well-placed, two-out grounder that gave the Mets a 4-2 lead in the sixth. “I looked to get a hit. I wanted to get a couple in.”

GAME NOTES: Weeks first homer led of the game, the 15th time the talented 2B has done so…. Manuel has stated that LH Oliver Perez will only be used in mop up duty and the organization is still trying to convince him to go to the minors…. Wright tied Mets legend Mike Piazza for 6th on the club’s all time hit list at 1028

Hart’s big bat leads Brewers over Mets 8-6

by @ 9:42 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

RF Corey Hart continued to hammer Mets pitching Saturday night as he had 6 rbi to lead the host Milwaukee Brewers over the NY Mets 8-6 at Miller Park. Hart, after hitting a walk off two run shot Friday, had a first inning grand slam and added another two run homer in the 3rd.  Mets 1B Ike Davis had a 3 run bomb while SS Jose Reyes, LF Jason Bay, CF Angel Pagan and RF Jeff Francoeur had two hits apiece.  NY is now a 6-16 on the road(3-12 in May) and has not won a single road series on the season.

RH Fernando Nieve(1-3, 6.48)  started for NY and was gone after allowing 5 runs in 2 innings. He did strike out 5(3 walks) while allowing 3 hits(2 homers) in his 1st start in 2010. “I wasn’t sharp enough,” Nieve said. “I was behind too many people.” LH Oliver Perez followed and he was also hit hard. Over 2 innings, the southpaw allowed 3 hits and 3 runs while striking out 2 and walking the same number. Manager Jerry Manuel explains his decision to start Nieve, who has been in the bullpen all season. “I had some concerns but I felt that he deserved an opportunity to start.” The Mets fell to .500(25-25) on the season.

METS LINE-UP: Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, Bay, Davis, 3B David Wright, Pagan, C Rod Barajas, Francoeur, Pitcher

MORE JERRY: “I still see some fight in the team. I see us coming back in games, scoring in different frames and having opportunities. I still see a lot of positives happening on the road,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “We just can’t seem to get over the hump. I think we will.”

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: Late Saturday night, the Detroit Tigers designated LH SP Dontrelle Willis for assingment. The team will eat an estimated 8 million of his 12 million dollar salary. The Mets should strongly consider a similiar move with Perez, who KILLS this club every time he takes the mound!

GAME NOTES: NY was 5 for 16 with runners in scoring position but did not have a base runner after the 5th inning… Hart has 3 homers and 8 rbi in the first two games of this series…. Wright had another awful game at the plate going 0 for 4 with 2 Ks, he is now hitting .244… Brewers RH RP Todd Coffey pitched 2 and a third scoreless innings, HUGE innings!… LH SP Jon Niese threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session and will start for Triple A Buffalo Monday… All 14 runs scored in the first 4 innings

Hart’s homer ends Mets shutout streak, leads Brewers to 2-0 win

by @ 9:10 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

RF Corey Hart’s two run walk off shot in the 9th inning ended a masterful pitching battle as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the New York Mets 2-0 Friday night at Miller Park in Wisconsin.  The bomb made a winner of Brewers ace Yovani Gallardo(5-2, 2.78) who threw a complete game 8 hitter, The righty K-ed 7 and walked one. He was matched by his mound counterpart, Mets southpaw Johan Santana.  Over 8 frames, he allowed 3 hits while striking out 5 and walking 2.

As great as Gallardo was, NY had two opportunities to score, the best being in the 3rd inning.  The team loaded the bases with no outs and red hot SS Jose Reyes hit the 1st pitch to 1B Prince Fielder, who threw home for a force out. 2B Alex Cora then hit into an inning ending double play. In the 8th, Santana hit a two out double but was stranded when Reyes took a called third strike.

Mets skipper Jerry Manuel pulled Santana after 105 pitches and his ace was fine with the move. “I was fine at that point. He decided to go with the bullpen and that’s about it,” Santana said. “The way that everything was going, the situation, the atmosphere, everything, you don’t want to come out of the game for sure.” After LH Pedro Feliciano retired Fielder, LF Ryan Braun singled off of RH Ryota Igarashi. After an out, Hart homered to left to end the game. The loss drops the Mets to 25-24 and the team scoreless innings streak ended at 35.

GAME NOTES: Very strange stat, the two runs scored on Hart’s homer where the first by the Brewers in Gallardo’s 3 career starts vs NY…. Mets had a 42 inning scoreless streak from Sept 24-28,1969.. Hart has 7 hr and 13 rbi in his last 13 games… Gallardo threw 121 pitches… Mets C Rod Barajas and Santana were the only players on either team to have 2 hits

Pelfrey stars as Mets shutout Phillies for the the 3rd straight time, win 3-0

by @ 11:19 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

RH SP Mike Pelfrey threw 7 strong innings while SS Jose Reyes continued to show his  old form with a 2 run double, leading the NY Mets to a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field Thursday night .  The start of the game was delayed almost 2 hours due to rain but the that did nothing to liven up the Phillies bats.  The win was historic for the franchise as only in the Mets 1969 World Championship campaign had the club shut out the same team for 3 straight games. That team? The Phillies!

Pelfrey, who is making a serious case for the NL all star team, won his 7th game and allowed only 3 hits. He struggled with his control all night(5 walks) but induced 3 double plays and recorded 11 ground ball outs compared to 4 fly balls.“I think your job is to put up zeros,” Pelfrey said. “I thought I was OK.” Pedro Feliciano threw the 8th to earn his 6th hold while Francisco Rodriquez K-ed RF Jayson Werth to end the game and post his 9th save.

Reyes had 3 hits, a run and the biggest hit of the night, a two run double down the left field line that chased Phillies LH Cole Hamels(6 and a third innings, 9 hits, 3 runs(2 earned) with 3 strike outs and 1 walk) in the 7th, giving NY two huge insurance runs.  This is the Mets SS 5th consecutive multi hit game and he looks to be close to pre-injury/illness form.  NY is has won 5 of 6 and stands at 25-23 on the year.

METS LINEUP: SS Jose Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, LF Jason Bay, 1B Ike Davis, 3B David Wright, CF Angel Pagan, RF Jeff Francoeur, C Henry Blanco, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: NY became the 1st team since the 2004 Minnesota Twins to shut out a team 3 straight. That club held the Kansas City Royals without a run in a 3 game set and was led by Johan Santana, the Mets current ace…. GM Omar Minaya says CF Carlos Beltran(knee) will probably not be back before the All Star break… As great as the pitching has been, think of this stat: The 69 World Champions had 10 shutouts -TEN- in September!!!!… C Rod Barajas was given a day off after taking a wild pitch of his wrist in Wednesday’s game… Reyes met the newly crowned Miss USA Rima Fakih(Michigan) pre game and gave her batting tips.  She attended high school near Citi Field and saw her first game at Shea Stadium in 1994… Pagan had 2 hits and stole his 8th base of the year…. LH Jon Niese will make a rehab start this weekend at Single A St. Lucie and will rejoin the rotation next week. He is eligible to come of the DL June 1st

Mets pitchers continue to baffle Phillies, shut out streak reaches 18 innings as NY wins 5-0

by @ 1:39 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Hisanori Takahashi pitched 6 shutout innings while SS Jose Reyes had his 4th straight multi-hit game as the New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0 Wednesday night at Citi Field.  C Rod Barajas, a great spring training signing by Mets GM Omar Minaya, had 3 rbis, including a two run double while the team stole 4 bases, led by two apiece  from 2B  Luis Castillo and CF Angel Pagan. Takahashi, in his 2nd ML start, pitched another solid game, allowing 5 hits while K-ing 6 in 6 frames.  The Phillies have not scored in 2 straight games while  being shutout in 3 of 4 games, and Manager Charlie Manuel held a 15 minute team meeting post game.  The Mets(24-23) have now won back to back series vs the two teams that played in the 2009 World Series and look to be playing their best ball of the 2010 campaign.

METS LINE-UP: Reyes, Castillo, LF Jason Bay, 1B Ike Davis, 3B David Wright, Pagan, Barajas, Francoeur, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: 3 Mets relievers threw a scoreless inning: Jenrry Mejia, Ryota Igarashi and Fernando Nieve… Takahashi threw 1st pitch strikes to 15 of 23 batters…. Pagan and Reyes had two hits apiece to pace NY… Mets continue to hit with runners in scoring position, went 3 for 13 Wednesday night… Reyes homered for the 1st time in 2010… Barajas took a wild pitch of his right wrist, X rays were negative but look for him to sit Thursday

Dickey,bats propel Mets over Phillies,8-0

by @ 8:24 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey(1-0,1.50) threw 6 shutout innings while his teammates banged out 13 hits, leading the New York  Mets over the Philadelphia Phillies 8-0 at Citi Field. Jose Reyes, who is starting to regain pre-injury form, had 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 steals and an rbi; He was on base all night and making things happen.“I’ve been feeling very good in my legs the last two or three weeks,” Reyes said. “That’s a big part of my game.”

LF Jason Bay, really hammering the ball lately, and RF Jeff Francoeur had 2 rbi apiece.  Dickey, who took a Ryan Howard line drive of his left elbow in the 2nd, was outstanding again for NY, allowing 7 hits while K-ing 7 and walking 3.“I feel like I’m 27 in knuckleball years because I started throwing it in ’05,” said Dickey, who had his wife and three kids in the stands. “It’s been a nice journey for me with this pitch.”

LH  Raul Valdez pitched the final three innings for a save and helped his own cause with an 8th inning rbi double. The free agent from Cuba is now 4 for 7 with the bat.“Can’t say enough about that guy,” Francoeur said. “He never smiles. Hits a double and looks like he’s supposed to do it. … If we were in St. Louis, I’d be batting ninth and he’d be batting eighth.” What a difference a week makes, as The Mets have won 3 straight(4 of 5, .500 for the season,23-23) after they had lost 7 of 8 and rumors started to circulate about  the potential firing of skipper Jerry Manuel.

METS LINEUP: Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, Bay, 1B Ike Davis, 3B David Wright, CF Angel Pagan, C Rod Barajas, Francoeur, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Reyes’ 1st inning single was his 1000th career hit… Mets went 5 for 11 with runners in scoring position and scored two runs with outs…. Bay stole his 7th base…. 3B Placido Polanco had 3 hits for the Phillies… Fan favorite OF-1B Chris Carter drove in a run in the 6th with a pinch hit single… Reports circulating about Closer Francisco Rodriquez having issues with bullpen coach(and ex Met pitcher) Randy Niemann over the weekend. Manuel downplayed it pre-game saying “K Rod wants to pitch. He loves to pitch.” … Jon Niese was scheduled to throw bullpen session today… Dickey had his elbow x-rayed during the game and he escaped serious injury

Jose Lima, Maine update

by @ 8:54 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of ML pitcher Jose Lima, who passed away Sunday at the age of 37.  The colorful righty won 89 games over 13 seasons while pitching for the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Royals and Mets(2006). His best season was 1999 when he went 21-10 with a 3.58 ERA. One of the true characters of the game, when he pitched he put on a show and Jose called it”Lima Time”. RIP Jose Lima.

RH SP John Maine has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his right rotator cuff and can resume throwing as pain allows. Not great news but not catastrophic either. Pretty clear it is time for the Mets to add a major starting pitcher with Maine and LH Jonathon Niese on the DL plus Oliver Perez lost in space.   Get on the phone with Houston, Omar! Get Roy Oswalt!

KRod Ks ARod to secure Mets win 6-4 as Santana and Bay star

by @ 9:45 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Closer Francisco Rodriquez struck out Yankees star 3B Alex Rodriquez with the tying runs on base helping the NY Mets win 6-4 Sunday night at Citi Field. Ace lefty Johan Santana threw 7 and 2 third huge innings while Jason Bay hit homers to left and right field vs Yankees ace CC Sabathia while 3B David Wright and C Rod Barajas added rbi doubles. 2B Alex Cora might have had the biggest hit of the night when he got the ball rolling in the 4 run 2nd with a clutch 2 out 2 run single. The Mets took round 1 of the Subway series 2 games to 3 and are now 22-23(16-9) on the season.

SUPER SANTANA: Tonight you saw what an ace is and his name is Johan. Just in complete control all night and you felt safe with the lefty on the mound. Really was in the strike zone from pitch 1(69 strikes outof 105 pitches) and improved to 4-2 on the year.

watch the the resident film

CASTILLO-CORA: Cora was a late fill in for 2b Luis Castillo, who is battling a sore left foot.

BIG BAY: I covered Bay for a year with the Pirates and grew up in the Boston area, so I have several friends who are Red Sox fans. This guy is a tremendous player and hopefully tonight will be the start of big surge. “Kind of like a big exhale,” Bay said. “Hopefully, it’s not a novelty anymore.” In a single game, he tripled his home run total for the season and he continues to hammer Yankees pitching.(.315,3 homers, 20 rbi in 89 at bats from 2007 to 2009)

GRUMPY GIRARDI: Let me be frank here, I don’t like the man, I think he is a clown and Bozo could manage that team and win 95 games. His arrogance with his Uniform number(28,27 last year as they tried to win the 27th World Championship in Yankees history) flaunts his organization’s attitude in the face of fans of every other baseball team in the majors. But seriously, this guy needs to relax and enjoy life. Argues and complains about everything,  Needs to get out and visit the sites in NY or something. Would love to see him manage without 3 of his 5 starting pitchers and All Star CF for about a week. He would snap like a rubber band!

BULLPEN BLUES: I screamed last night about the Oliver Perez situation(He refuses to go to Triple A and the Mets are saddled with a USELESS pitcher!) and tonight was an example how this can hurt the team. Manuel has had to use his pen a ton as of late with injuries to both SPs John Maine and John Maine as well as Perez’ awful performances.  He used LH Pedro Feliciano to get out of a huge 8th inning jam(Bases loaded, Robinson Cano up) and then turned to freshly activated Ryota Igarashi, who hasn’t pitched in the majors in more than a month. Predictably, Igarashi struggled and forced Manuel to bring K Rod in after he had gotten 5 outs to secure Saturday’s win.

METS LINE-UP:  SS Jose Reyes, Cora, Bay, 1B Ike Davis, Wright, CF Angel Pagan, Barajas, RF Jeff  Francoeur, Pitcher

MINAYA MOVE: Pretty obvious that this team needs a top 3 starting pitcher. Not sure if this team has enough to get Seattle’s Cliff Lee(Free agent after this year) but I would think Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt(Signed thru 2011), who is demanding a trade would make sense.  Too much is being asked of both the bullpen and Manuel with the current state of the Mets pitching staff, They cannot and will not hold up over 162 games without a move of this calibre. Time for GM Omar Minaya to step up and help the on field product!

GAME NOTES: Mets continue to get 2 out hits with the 4 2nd inning runs coming in that scenario after scoring all 5 runs Saturday with 2 out…. Yankees C Francisco Cervelli had an rbi single reviewed in the 7th as the ball hit the orange line by the Left Field foul pole. The umpires checked the video to see if it was a home run but they upheld the original call of a single…. Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey(6 innnings,2 runs vs Washington in his only Mets appearance on May 19th) will start Tuesday nights opener vs the Phillies

Pelfrey wins 6th game while Mets clutch up as the defeat Yankees, 5-3

by @ 9:50 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

RH Mike Pelfrey won his 6th game with 6 strong innings(6 hits, 1 run)( while LF Jason Bay tied a career high with 4 hits, leading the New York Mets over the New York Yankees 5-3 Saturday night at Citi Field.   3B David Wright and CF Angel Pagan(3 hits) had two rbi apiece while the Mets scored scored all 6 runs with two out hits. The bullpen made things interesting in the 8th but closer Francisco Rodriquez came in to put the fire out(Bases loaded,1 out)  with only 2 runs scoring in the frame.  K Rod got 5 outs for his 7th save and the Mets are now 21-23(15-9 at home).

PREMIER PELFREY: We continue to see the evolution of the big right hander from Wichita St. He has been incredible in all of his starts except 1. (When he had a sore shoulder)“I feel very good about big Mike,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “He has really evolved and matured into a solid, solid pitcher.”

METS LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, LF Jason Bay, 1B Ike Davis, 3B David Wright, CF Angel Pagan, C Rod Barajas, RF Jeff Francoeur

GAME NOTES: Underrated Yankees RF Nick Swisher had 3 hits and run…Rookie RH Jenrry Mejia pitched the 7th and earned his 2nd hold…Team sent RHP Manny Acosta to Triple A while recalling RHP Ryota Igarashi.(DL-ed with hamstring)… RHP John Maine will have his shoulder examined by team doctors Monday… Mets handed Phil Hughes(5-1,2.72) his 1st loss of the year… Bay is hitting .298 on the year… Strikeouts aside, Wright has 32 rbi

PUTRID PEREZ: Oliver Perez should be ashamed of himself tonight. He stinks and is hurting the team by being in the majors right now. The 2010 New York Mets are a better team with Manny Acosta on it today. Oliver Perez is not a major league pitcher on May 22, 2010. He needs to go to the minors and work on getting back here. This whole situation is a disgrace. He is hurting the team and the MLB Players association, the same group who thinks cigarettes are the same as steroids, should be embarrassed. The other 23 players on this team are more important than Olie! They have rights too… As long as Perez is around this team is giving away a roster spot. Selfish, selfish ball player who is doing both himself and his team a disservice. GM Omar Minaya needs to step up and get involved!

7th inning gaffe helps Yankees defeat Mets, 2-1

by @ 9:57 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Mets 2b Alex Cora’s poor throw set up the two runs the Yankees would need as they defeated the Mets, 2-1 Friday night at Citi Field.  Mets spot starter LH Hisanori Takahashi(5 hits over 6 innings) and Yankees RH 5 man  Javier Vasquez(1 hit over 6) engaged in a great pitchers duel and you had a feeling a mistake would turn the game. That came in the 7th when Alex Cora’s poor relay throw on a grounder put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Rookie OF Kevin Russo(West Babylon native) made the Mets pay when he doubled down the right field line to plate both runs.  NY staged a mini rally in the 9th when LF Jason Bay and 1B Ike Davis doubled back to back vs. future Hall of Famer closer Mariano Rivera. However, David Wright grounded out to 2B Robinson Cano to end the game, The Mets have dropped 7 of 9 and are now  20-23 on the year.

METS LINEUP: SS Jose Reyes, 2B Alex Cora, LF Jason Bay, 1B Ike Davis, 3B David Wright, CF Angel Pagan, C Rod Barajas, RF Jeff Francoeur, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Cora drew 2 walks and added a hit…..Yankees 3B Alex Rodriquez and Russo had 2 hits apiece… Team DL-ed RH SP John Maine and recalled RH Elmer Dessens, Friday night’s losing pitcher. Maine, who has weakness in his right shoulder, will be further evaluated this week… 1B- OF Daniel Murphy went 2 for 3 with a homer in his first rehab game(Knee injury) in Class A. He was at 1B all game… RH RP Ryota Igarashi(Hamstring) pitched  scoreless inning for Triple A Buffalo. According to Jerry Manuel, he will stay there thru Saturday MINIMUM…. Vasquez was pulled after taking a ball of his index finger attempting to bunt in the 7th. Post game he claimed to be fine

PULVERIZED PEN: With the staff down 3 starting pitchers and both Raul Valdez(took over for Maine after 5 pitches) and Jenrry Mejia unavailable, Manuel was forced to turn to Dessens, who arrived at the park in the 5th inning!

STAR OF THE GAME: Takahashi, who will remain the rotation according to  Manuel, kept one of the better line-ups in all of baseball at bay while K-ing 5. “I did very well because I threw more than 100 pitches without any runs in six innings,” Takahashi said through a translator. “I did everything I could do.”

Maine lasts 5 pitches but Wright’s big night carries Mets over Nationals 10-7

by @ 9:26 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

3B David Wright had 4 rbi, hi-lighted by a first inning 3 run double, leading the New York Mets to a 10-7 win over the Washington Nationals Thursday night at Nationals Park. The big story out of this game, AGAIN, involves a Mets starting pitcher, RH John Maine. Maine apparently did not have a strong pre-game bullpen session and was throwing under 80 mph when he took the mound(Usually tops out around 92-93) . He then walked  Nationals lead off man Nyjer Morgan on 5 pitches, Mets skipper Jerry Manuel  consulted pitching coach Dan Warthen before pulling Maine. The right hander has battled shoulder issues in the past and left the game for “precautionary reasons”, according to the club. However, Maine was not a happy camper post game. “I didn’t get asked,” Maine said. ” They said they something, and they were taking me out. I’m a little hurt by that.”

NY pounded out 15 hits, led by 3 apiece from LF Jason Bay, 1B Ike Davis  and Wright, while RF Rod Barajas(2 run hr) and RF Jeff Francoeur added 2 rbi.   Davis scored 3 runs while CF Angel Pagan scored a run and drew two walks after his historic game Wednesday.(Hit inside the park home run and started a triple play for the 1st time since 1955) NY chased Nationals starter Luis Atilano(3-1,5.06) in the 5th during a decisive 5 run outburst, he ended the night tossing 4 and a third innings, allowing 9 hits and 7 runs.(6 earned)

Mets reliever Raul Valdez(2-1,3.20) gets the game ball for his performance tonight, He took over after Maine’s start and gave the team 5 HUGE innings a night after he pitched to two batters Wednesday. Throwing 80 pitches(47 for strikes), he allowed 7 hits and 3 runs while K-ing 6 and walking 1. Stats do not do his performance justice and for a team that is already down two starting pitchers, it was vital.

The rest of the NY bullpen(TIRED?!) made things interesting when they inherited a 10-3 lead. After RH Manny Acosta(3.27) threw a scoreless inning, Jenrry(Rumored to go to the minors to be converted to a starter) Mejia allowed 3 runs in an inning and 2 thirds. LH Pedro Feliciano(1-2,4 holds, 1.50) got the final out of  8th inning and minimized the damage(2 runs)  after inheriting a bases loaded with  jam.  He allowed a PH rbi single by Christian Guzman and clearly pitched around Nationals stud 3B Ryan Zimmerman, walking him with the bases full. However, he got 1B Adam Dunn to fly out to end the threat and inning.  Francisco Rodriquez allowed a run in the 9th but retired the final 3 Washington batters to secure the win. NY is now 20-22 after the mini-series split.

MORE MAINE: “He wanted to pitch. We got into a little exchange about that, and I told him I was trying to protect his best interests,” Manuel said. The Mets were clearly concerned with his bullpen session and had Valdez warming up during Morgan’s at bat!

METS  LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, 2B Alex Cora, Bay, Davis, Wright, Pagan, Barajas, Francoeur, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: Francoeur stole his 4th base of the season… Nationals left 10 men on base….OF Willie Harris continues to KILL NY!  3 AB, 3 rbi!… April 26, 1981 was the last time a Mets starting pitcher was removed after facing just one batter…Nationals committed a season high three errors… Valdez had never pitched more than 4 innings

HATS OFF TO JERRY: Manuel takes a lot of heat but have to give him credit for how he has handled two slumping players, Wright and Francoeur. He did not start “Frenchy” for two games and now he is 4 for 10 after getting 1 hit in 18 at bats.  Wright  had one of the worst nights of his career Tuesday, K-ing 3 times and allowing the winning run to score on a throwing error, also responded and looked energized tonight.

Despite Pagan’s historic night, Mets lose 5-3 to Nationals

by @ 9:37 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Mets CF Angel Pagan became the 1st player in 55 years to be involved in in both a triple play and an inside the park home run in the same game, Unfortunately his big night was not enough as the Washington Nationals defeated New York 5-3 Wednesday night at Nationals Park in D.C. Pagan hit a drive towards the wall in center,  the ball bounced past the centerfielder and rolled towards 2nd base, where SS Ian Desmond’s relay throw was too late to prevent the homer. “I knew the ball hit the wall. I was kind of slowing down when I was rounding third, so when (Mets 3B coach Chip Hale) told me to go, I (sighed) and kind of threw the anchor,” Pagan said. “I got kind of slow right there.”

As amazing as the home run was, Pagan had an even better play in the 5th. With runners at 1st and 2nd, 2B Christian Guzman hit a sinking liner to Pagan, who appeared to make the catch. Both base runners advanced, thinking the ball would not be caught. Pagan overthrew 2nd but C Henry Blanco caught it and the Mets doubled off each runner at 1st and 2nd. “It was a tough catch, but I made it. I told (the umpire), I was pointing that I caught the ball in case they missed it,” Pagan said. “I was just going after the triple play, but I don’t know if they called a no-catch. I just told Reyes to step on second and throw to first base.”  The umpires huddled and the triple play stood, the first turned by NY since May 17, 2002.

The game itself was a pitchers  duel, as both starters threw strong outings, with Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey allowing 5 hits and 2 runs over 6 innings. Nationals starter(and ex- Met) Livan Hernandez(4-2,1.62) continued his incredible 2010 campaign with 6 and a third solid innings. He allowed 4 hits and 2 runs while striking out 2 and walking 3.  The Nationals put a 3 spot on the NY bullpen in the 7th, hi-lighted by rbi hits from 2b Christian Guzman(Triple) and 3B Ryan Zimmerman(single). LH Raul Valdez(1-1,2.66,)  took the loss after allowing a bloop double to open the inning(Charged with 1 run in a third of an inning pitched). RH Fernando(1-2,5.40) Nieve(1 third an inning, 2 runs) was hit hard and gave up three runs before LH Oliver Perez(NOT A TYPO) recorded the final out of the inning. The loss drops the slumping Mets to 19-22 on the year and they have lost 9 of 11.

METS LINE-UP: Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, LF Jason Bay, 1B Ike Davis, Pagan, RF Jeff Francoeur, 3B Fernando Tatis, Blanco

SECRET OF SUCCESS: You saw a tremendous example of why the Nationals are winning tonight. They have one of the better bullpens in all of baseball and this was before they called up Drew Storen, their 2009 #1 draft pick(10th overall),who earned his 1st ML win tonight (2nd appearance). Washington’s top set-up man, RH Tyler Clippard(7 wins, 8th hold,2.22 era,1.20 whip) and closer Matt Capps, ML leadingf 15th save, have combined to make this club  a very formidable opponent.

GAME NOTES: Slumping 3B David Wright(50+ strike outs) was given the night off, Tatis took his place at Third. Fernando hit a solo shot off Capps in the 9th …. LH SP Jon Niese(Hamstring) was put on the DL with Dickey taking his roster spot…Game featured 3 sacrifice flies: Nationals RF Roger Bernadina(4th inning ),Francoeur(6th) and Washington PH-1B Adam Kennedy in the 7th… Mets managed only 5 hits.. Phillies SS Ted Kazanski was the last player to hit both an inside the park homer and turn a triple play in the same game on September 25,1955,according to the Elias Sports Bureau

Wright all wrong as Braves beat Mets, 3-2

by @ 11:16 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

All star 3B David Wright’s 9th inning throwing error allowed the winning run to score, as the Atlanta Braves defeated the New York Mets 3-2 Tuesday night at Citi Field in Georgia. The poor throw capped a tough night for the Mets franchise player that saw him also strike out 3 times, including a huge K in the 9th with the go ahead run at 3rd and 1 out.  “It’s a tough, humbling game sometimes, and right now it is for me,” he said. “It’s tough, when somebody goes out there and is playing as poorly as I am right now and really costing us, both offensively and defensively.”

Mets ace lefty Johan Santana(3-2, 3.72) made one bad pitch all night, a 3rd inning two run homer to Braves 1B Troy Glaus in the 3rd.  The southpaw  rallied to  retire the next 13 Atlanta batters and ended his night with 7 innings pitched with 5 hits allowed, 4 Ks and 2 walks. Braves starter RH Kris Medlen was also outstanding over 6+ frames$ hits,6 Ks, 2 walks)  allowing on solo shots to 1B Ike Davis and RF Jeff Francoeur in the 5th.  Hats off to old friend, Atlanta closer Billy Wagner(Mets 2006-2009) , for escaping a MAJOR jam in the top of the 9th, K-ing Davis and Wright with a runner at 3rd.

TUESDAY’S LINE-UP: SS Jose Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, LF Chris Carter, Wright, Davis, CF Angel Pagan, RF Jeff Francoeur, C Henry Blanco, Pitcher

GAME NOTES: As predicted here, veteran knuckleballer RH R.A. Dickey, will make the start Wednesday at the Nationals. This makes sense with the removal of disappointing LH Oliver Perez from the rotation and the hamstring injury to fellow lefty Jon Niese…. Castillo had two hits to lead NY…. C Rod Barajas was a late scratch from the line-up with a stomach issue… Braves skipper Bobby Cox added to his ML ejection record when he was tossed for arguing a safe call at First base in the 9th… Braves all star C Brian McCann, who had 2 hits to top Atlanta, set up the winning rally with his lead off single in the 9th vs loser Pedro Feliciano(1-2,1.53) ) . OF Brent Clevlen, who pinch ran for the Braves backstop,  advanced to 2nd after a rookie Jenrry Mejia(0-2,2.60) walked SS Yunel Escobar and scored after the poor running throw from Wright went into right field. The loss puts NY at 19-21 and they continue to struggle on the road(5-13)… Prior to McCann’s hit, NY pitchers had retired 16 Braves in a row

Pelfrey, Barajas lead way as Mets defeat Braves 3-2

by @ 8:32 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The battery of C Rod Barajas and RHP Mike Pelfrey starred as the New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-2 Monday night at Turner Field in Georgia. Pelfrey threw 7 2/3 innings for the win while Barajas drove in two with a double in the 2nd. Chris Carter got another start in right field and drove in SS Jose Reyes, who used his speed to help generate the run, in the 6th with a ground out. Braves starter Derek Lowe pitched a 7 solid innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits while LF Eric Hinske(Homer) and 3B Chipper Jones(Sacrifice fly) drove in runs. LH RP Pedro Feliciano(4th hold) recorded the final out in the 8th(HUGE strike out of Braves all star C Brian McCann) and closer Francisco Rodriquez earned his 6th save, striking out CF Nate McLouth to end the game.  The Mets are now 19-20 and the win  ends a 5 game losing streak.

BIG BRASS:  Jeff Wilpon, Omar Minaya, John Ricco and the coaching staff met pre-game to discuss” the plan going forward,’ ‘Where are we going and how can we get better,’ and, all and all, it was a good baseball meeting.” said Mets skipper Jerry Manuel

TONIGHT’S LINEUP: Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, LF Jason Bay, Carter, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, C Rod Barajas, CF Gary Matthews Jr.

REYES RETURN: Jose is starting to resemble the spark plug the Mets need, HUGE effort led to the winning run in the 6th.  Single, sacrificed to 2nd by Castillo and then stole 3rd, scoring on a grounder. Real great to see and hopefully a sign of things to come.

GAME NOTES:  Regular RF Jeff Francoeur was not in the starting line-up for the 2nd consecutive day but entered the game as defensive replacement in the 6th as a defensive replacement…  Matthews Jr started in CF , after a solid outing Sunday… LH SP Jon Niese has a mild hamstring strain and will miss his next start. The team does not have a starter named for Wednesday’s contest( My guess? RA Dickey) and LH Hisanori Takahashi will pitch In Niese’s slot Friday night vs the Yankees… Reyes stole his 9th base while Bay got #5… Barajas led the team with 2 hits… Pelfrey’s win was the first by a Mets starting pitcher in the month of May

Niese injured as Marlins win 10-8 to sweep miserable Mets

by @ 9:36 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Rookie LH Jonathon Niese re-injured his right hamstring during the 6 run Marlins 3rd inning as Florida completed a 4 game sweep of the New York Mets, winning 10-8 Sunday afternoon at Sun Life Stadium.  NY made two errors in the frame and the hosts took advantage with 3 run producing hits. Niese(2 innings, 4 hits, 5 runs(2 runs) ) came up lame after his own throwing error led to the 3rd Marlins run. The southpaw, who needed season ending surgery after tearing the same hamstring last August 6th,  threw one more warm up pitch and was pulled. LH Hisanori Takahashi took over and lasted 3 innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs.

Give the Mets a  ton of credit, Down 6-0, they did not quit and they strung together two 3 run innings in the 6th and 7th innings to pull within one at 7-6.  RF Chris Carter(rbi single) and 3B David Wright(2 run double) combined for 3 rbi in the 6th while SS Jose Reyes(run producing ground out) and 2B Alex Cora(Another 2 run double) did the deed in the 7th. Unfortunately, Marlins LF Chris Coghlan(GREAT 12 pitch at bat) put the game away with a 3 run homer in the bottom of the inning vs Mets reliever RH Fernando Nieve. Again, NY did not lie down with mini rallies in the 8th and 9th(Single runs in each frame) but Florida closer Leo Nunez struck out Wright to end the game.   The Mets are now 18-20 and have lost 5 in a row.

NIESE UPDATE:  “It was more a scare than anything,” Niese said. “I’m feeling a little sore now, nothing major. I don’t want to miss a start. I’ll do whatever I can, but that being said, I have to listen to the doctors.” Niese is scheduled to be checked out by team doctors Monday in NY, the team will more than likely have an update then.

GAME NOTES: RF Jeff Francoeur was given the day off with Carter taking  his spot…. LJ Jason Bay(9th inning triple) and Cora had 2 hits to lead NY… Sunday’s batting order: Reyes, Cora, Bay, Carter, Wright, 1B Ike Davis, CF Angel Pagan, C Henry Blanco, Pitcher… OF Cody Ross, who made several strong defensive plays in the series, went 4 for 4 to lead the Marlins attack… Mets released RH RP Kiko Calero, an off season signing who had  10+ ERA in Triple A….C Henry Blanco played in his 1st game since going on the Bereavement list to deal with his sick Mother.  He went 1 for 3 with a run… Bay has a hit in 10 straight games

Marlins jump on Maine early, Line-up changes don’t help as Marlins defeat Mets 7-5, Perez moved to bullpen

by @ 9:01 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

RH SP John Maine had major control issues to open the game and the Marlins took advantage, helping Florida defeat the Mets 7-5 Saturday night at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Maine, who had 3 solid starts in a row, walked the first 3 batters on 12 pitches and allowed 3 runs in the 1st. He rallied to give the team 5 innings(An important factor, considering the nightmarish performance of LH SP Oliver Perez Friday night) , saving the bullpen.  Offensively, the Mets  unveiled a revamped line-up and 5 of the 8 position starters had 2 hits. CF Cameron Maybin had 2 hits and 3 rbi for the Marlins while SS Hanley Ramirez and INF Jorge Cantu had 3 hits. LH Nate Robertson earned the win for Florida with 5 and two third innings of 7 hit ball. NY has now lost 4 in a row and are under .500 at 18-19.

NEW LINE-UP: Basically, flip flopped SS Jose Reyes and CF Angel Pagan’s slots in the order. Reyes, 2B Luis Castillo, Pagan, LF Jason Bay, 3B David Wright, 1B Ike Davis, RF Jeff Francoeur and C Rod Barajas.

PEREZ PULLED: Mets skipper Jerry Manuel told Perez he would be removed from the rotation and sent to the bullpen. No word yet on who will take his spot. The mercurial lefty had a closed door meeting with Manuel and Pitching coach Dan Warthen pre game and was given the news. Perez reportedly has no interest in going to Triple-A to work on his issues… Reyes, Castillo, Bay, Barajas and Wright had 2 hits apiece with The Mets 3B also hitting a tremendous home run to center in the 2nd, estimated at 451 feet… Francoeur went 0 for 4 with two Ks and is now hitting .215 on the year. Good bet that he has a day off Sunday with OF-1B Chris Carter giving him a blow…. CF Carlos Beltran visited the team during batting practice and appeared to be in good spirits as he continues to come back from knee surgery… C Henry Blanco returned from his bereavement (Mother’s illness) leave and Josh Thole was sent back to Triple A… Mets have lost every road series this season(0-5)… Barajas, who has been great for NY, made a big base running blunder in the 9th. Leading off the inning, he tried to turn a single into a double and was thrown out by weak armed Marlins LF Chris Coghlan. The play becomes bigger when you realize strung together a mini-rally and brought the tying run to the plate vs Florida closer Leo Nunez.

Perez pounded as Marlins bash Mets,7-2

by @ 10:09 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

The Florida Marlins chased LH SP Oliver Perez in the 4th inning with 3 home runs, helping them defeat the NY Mets 7-2 Friday night at Sun Life Stadium.  Perez, now 0-3 with a 5.94 ERA, began to unravel in the 3rd when he allowed a 3 run homer to all star 2B Dan Uggla and an RBI single to CF Cameron Maybin. LF Chris Coghlan and 1B Gabby Sanchez then homered back to back to open the 4th. After a line out, Uggla homered again and Perez hit the showers. Over 3 and third, the mercurial southpaw allowed 9 hits and 7 runs while K-ing 5 and walking 3. In three of his last 4 starts, Perez has not gotten out of the 4th inning! The early offensive explosion clearly took a lot out of the Mets and they only managed 4 hits. CF Angel Pagan doubled home two runs in the 5th for their only scoring play of the night. The loss puts NY at 18-18(Lost 5 of 6 overall)  on the season and many of their star players are in serious slumps.

OLIE OUT?: Perez was awful and if not for another great outing from the bullpen(4 and 2 thirds scoreless innings from 3 relievers), things would have been much worse. The Mets need to look at options not named Oliver Perez when his rotation spot comes up again. He hurts the team morale and you cannot afford to concede a game every 5th day. That is how bad he looks right now!  Your skipper understands your frustration. “I have to evaluate, obviously, and then sit down with the people involved,” Mets Manager Jerry Manuel said. “I won’t do anything until I talk to the player. We’re concerned with the outings we’ve been getting the last two outings.” Numerous reports have Manuel and GM Omar Minaya meeting in the manager’s office post game. I am guessing they were not discussing the dressing on the King Crab casserole from the pre-game spread!

GAME NOTES: 3B David Wright has struck out in 20 of his past 41 at bats… Before Thursday night, the last time the Mets lost a game on a wild pitch was September 1,1981…. Marlins K-ed 13 times… NY is an ML worst 4-10 on the road

Wild pitch breaks up tie as Marlins defeat Mets, 2-1

by @ 10:36 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

A 9th inning wild pitch scored the winning run, helping the Florida Marlins defeat the New York Mets 2-1 Thursday night at Sun Life Stadium in Miami.  Staff aces, Marlins RH Josh Johnson and Mets LH Johan Santana, were both on their “A” game while each club made several great defensive plays with the game moving along at such a crisp pace.(Mentioned numerous times by SNY announcers Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez) NY scored in the 2nd when LF Jason Bay singled to lead off the inning. After a wild pitch,  single from 1b Ike Davis and two strikeouts, C Rod Barajas singled Bay home after a good at bat. Florida tied it in the 3rd with a defensive mistake again playing a huge part in the run, After Gabe Sanchez singled to open the frame, Santana threw high to 2nd base on a bunt attempt and the Mets could not record an out.  Marlins LF Chris Coghlan singled to center to tie the game. The score remained tied until the home 9th until a walk and single put runners at the corners. PH Dan Uggla, the Marlins all star 2B, saw the first pitch from reliever Fernando Nieve bounce in the dirt away from Barjas for the winning run. With the loss, NY is now 18-17 on the year(4-9 at home).

ACES NOT WILD: What a show Johnson(95 pitches,71 strikes!!!!) and Santana put on. The Marlins ace allowed 3 hits and the one run while K-ing 7. You know you are good when you have Hernandez commenting on air, this kid throws SERIOUS gas. Santana’s outing was equally impressive and his change-up was devastating.  The southpaw gave up 6 hits while walking 1 and throwing 98 pitches.(62 for strikes)

LOUSY LINE-UP: Keep an eye on things the rest of this weekend, changes might be coming sooner than later according to the skipper. An amazing stat from this game, The Mets did not have a hit between the 2nd and 9th innings!!!“We have to start swinging the bats,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “You’ve got to tip your hat to their guy tonight — very good, very good. But we have to take note these next couple of days where we are as an offensive club. And if we continue to see the same thing, then I’m going to have to make some adjustments to the lineup.”

NO WAY JOSE: Mets SS Jose Reyes can be fun to watch but for the 2nd time in as many days he failed to get down a bunt, this time it was very costly. Leading off the 9th, 2B Luis Castillo singled and advanced to 2nd on a throwing error.  Reyes, who is among the fastest players in all of MLB, could not put a bunt in play then flew out to left field. Bay and 3B David Wright then where retired to end the inning by Marlins closer Leo Nunez.  Its official; REYES MAKES ME CRAZY!!! In another game I watched last night(Rockies-Nationals), Pudge Rodriquez, who is a HALL OF FAMER AND FORMER MVP,  got down a great sacrifice bunt in the 8th inning. That play set up a 6 run frame! Talent is one thing but this guy in particular makes me nuts. Another example: Have you ever seen a guy so fast get thrown out on the bases as often as he does? Hernandez talked about this during Wednesday’s game when he was thrown out at 3rd on a ball he misjudged for the 2nd out! I know I am being hard on the guy but when your team is struggling for runs and in close games, small things make a difference. A player of the Jose Reyes calibre should be able to bunt! In his defense, he owned it post game but he still needs to execute. This team needs its stars to play at a high level and Jose Reyes needs to be better than that!

GAME NOTES: Uggla was originally given the night off and for good reason! He is 1 for 19 with 10 Ks vs Santana in his career. This was the first time in 2010 the power hitting 2B was not in the starting line-up… Nieve leads the majors in games pitched(22) while LH RP Pedro Feliciano is #2 at 20… 3B David Wright after striking out twice tonight has 46 Ks on the year… The Mets have the fewest road wins in the majors. In their defense, they have played a ton of games at Citi Field and have lost several one run contests like tonight… RH RP Ryota Igarashi threw a bullpen session with no pain and the club should announce a rehab schedule sometime Friday. The free agent from Japan has been on the DL since injuring his hamstring April 21st… You wonder if Cohen and Hernandez enjoyed tonight’s well pitched game more when they realized who was on the mound for NY Friday night!  Keith better take his NO- DOZ pre-game!

Bernidina’s big day leads Nationals over Mets,6-4

by @ 9:15 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

RF Roger Bernadina homered with a runner on to break up a ninth inning tie, leading the Washington Nationals to a 6-4 victory over the New York Mets Wednesday afternoon Citi Field.  The game winning blast capped an amazing day for Bernadina, who made the defensive play of the game , robbing NY of three runs when he caught RF Jeff Francoeur’s liner on a great diving stab to end a 5th inning rally. He also  homered vs Mets RH SP Mike Pelfrey in the 4th, “I feel more confident and that’s why I think things are getting better.” Bernadina said.

Pelfrey pitched well in difficult conditions(raining all game with cold, biting winds) but was killed by the opposing starting pitcher Craig Stammen’s bat!  Stammen, who also pitched a solid game, drove in 3 runs with 2 separate hits.(2 rbi single in the 2nd, another rbi single in the 4th) Pelfrey allowed 7 hits and 4 runs over 5 and two third innings, he K-ed 6 and walked 3. Offensively, CF Angel Pagan and 2B Alex Cora had 2 hits apiece while 3B David Wright had 2 walks and scored run, Pelfrey, Pagan, Cora and SS Jose Reyes added rbi. NY is now 18-16 and starts an 8 day road trip Thursday at Florida.

BULLPEN BLUES: The relief corps had another strong outing until Bernadina’s homered vs Francisco Rodriquez(2-1,2.04) in the 9th. 3 relievers combined to toss 2 1/3 innings of scoreless innings before the blast.

GAME NOTES: Reyes had his 3rd error of the season….Pelfrey threw 119 pitches, matching a career high… Francoeur is in a huge slump, 12 for 84 with .143… Nationals RH Tyler Clippard, who throws over the top, took the win and the leads the Majors with 7….Washington is now 6-1 in series rubber games, the Mets are 0-4…. CF Carlos Beltran is running and experiencing no pain in his surgically repaired knee.  David Lennon from Newsday reports” the All-Star CF is hopeful he can avoid microfracture surgery and rejoin the Mets before too long.”… Nationals closer Matt Capps is now 14 for 14 in save opportunities for the year. What a great free agent signing!

6 run 8th inning leads Mets past Nationals, 8-6

by @ 9:45 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

C Rod Barajas and PH Chris Carter had key hits during a 6 run 8th inning explosion helping the New York Mets defeat the Washington Nationals 8-6 Tuesday night at Citi Field.  NY had 16 hits with LF Jason Bay and 3B David Wright having 3 apiece. LH SP Jonathon Niese struggled for 4 + innings, mainly with control issues.(5 walks) His final stat line: 4 and third innings, 6 hits, 6 runs with 3 Ks. Nationals 1B Adam Dunn hit a 3 run homer in the 1st while C Pudge Rodriquez chased Niese with a 2 run single in the 5th.  The win puts the Mets at 18-15 on the year(14-7 at Home) and the team goes for a series win Wednesday afternoon.

GREAT EIGHT: Mets put together their biggest inning of the season in the 8th with 6 runs and 6 hits while sending 12 men to the plate vs 3 Nationals relievers. Bay singled to open the inning with Wright doubling him to third while rookie 1b Ike Davis was safe on an errant throw allowing Bay to score, making it 6-3. After a strike out, Barajas doubled off the left field wall(Barely missing a home run) pulling NY within a run at 6-5. Alex Cora then made a huge play, bunting for a hit, moving Barajas to third.  CF Angel Pagan then singled to right , tying the game. Chris Carter, in his 1st Met at bat, then stroked a double to right and NY led 7-6. After an intentional walk, Bay worked a bases loaded walk to close the scoring at 8-6. The final two batters, Wright and Davis, made outs but what an inning!!!

MASH UPDATE: CF Carlos Beltran started   jogging and limited baseball activities at the Mets training complex in St. Lucie, Florida. 1B Daniel Murphy(Right knee sprain) has started to play in extended spring training games while RH Ryota Igarashi(Left hamstring) is throwing bullpens. Good news on all counts for once!

AWESOME “ANIMAL”: Carter is an interesting guy, Mets skipper Jerry Manuel nicknamed him “Animal” for his work ethic and intensity in spring training. “Sounds good to me.” Carter said post game. Manuel joked he had a bat in his hand since the 3rd inning preparing for an at bat!

BIG BULLPEN: Unbelievable job by the Mets relief corps AGAIN Tuesday night. 3 pitchers-RH Manny Acosta, LH Hisanori Takahashi and LH Raul Valdez(win) combined to toss 3 and 2 third innings of shutout ball to keep the team in range for a comeback. Closer Francisco Rodriquez pitched the 9th for his 5th save in 7 tries.

DAVIS D: For the third time in his short career, Davis made a diving, falling down catch into the NY dugout. However, this time it was the game’s final out. K Rod chuckled and the rookie gave a great explanation for his fearless play, “It’s not that far of a drop,I’d rather end the game than worry about getting a bruise.”

GAME NOTES: The win was the 1st in Valdez career… RF Jeff Francoeur had two separate rbis(Single in 2nd, 6th inning sacrifice fly)  and stole a base.. NY is now 1-12 in games trailing entering the 7th inning with Tuesday’s comeback win

Nationals ride back to back homers to 3-2 victory over Mets

by @ 9:42 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

2B Adam Kennedy and 3B Ryan Zimmerman hit consecutive homers in the 3rd inning, leading the visiting Washington Nationals to a 3-2 win over the New York Mets Monday at Citi Field.  RH SP Luis Atilano, pitching on his 25th birthday, gave the Nationals 5 and third strong innings for a his 3rd win while C Ivan Rodriquez had 4 hits including a 8th  inning rbi single.  Mets RH SP John Maine continued his current run of strong starts (3 consecutive quality starts after not pitching past 5 innings in his first 4 starts) with 6 workman like frames. He allowed 7 hits and 2 runs(On the back to back shots) while K-ing 5 and walking 4.   Luis Castillo, playing with a painful foot, drove in a run with an rbi single in the 7th while CF Angel Pagan(2 hits, solo shot in the 9th), 3B David Wright and C Rod Barjas had 2 hits apiece to pace NY.  The Mets have now lost two straight and stand at 17-15.(13-7 at home)

GAME NOTES:  SS Jose Reyes and Manager Jerry Manuel were ejected in for arguing ball and strikes in the bottom of the 7th inning…. Pagan stole his 4th base of the season and threw out Rodriquez at home to end the 6th… Nationals stole 5 bases, 4 of Maine and Barajas…. LH RP Pedro Feliciano allowed 3 hits and a run in a third of inning…. Every  Mets starter except Maine reached base but the team left 11 men on base… Team designated Frank Catalanotto for assignment post game and promoted 1B-OF Chris Carter from Triple-A Buffalo. The 27 year old was hitting .339 with 16 extra base hits and 20 rbi in 28 games. He adds a big bat to the bench and has great numbers vs left handed pitching(.448 OBP in Triple A)My main man Matthew Cerrone, who has been SCREAMING for Carter since March, is doing cartwheels!!!…Hats off to the Nationals relief corps, which pieced together 3 and two thirds innings without set-up man Tyler Clippard or closer Matt Capps unavailable due to overuse. 5 pitchers combined to throw 3 and two thirds innings to secure the win. Veteran Miguel Batista earned the save  with Brian Bruney, who earned a hold with the final 2 outs of the 8th…. C Henry Blanco was placed on the bereavement list to deal with his ill mother in Venezuela. Top catching prospect Josh Thole was recalled to fill his roster spot… Mets struck out 11 times after K-ing 14 on Sunday… Washington is an incredible 8-0 in one run 9 inning games!

CF Aaron Rowand hit a go ahead 2 run shot in the 8th and the home run was the deciding blow, as the San Francisco Giants defeated a gritty New York Mets club 6-5 Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. The homer to right, which appeared to be wind added, capped an up and down contest played in awful conditions with temperatures in the low 50s with howling winds averaging 25 miles per hour. The blustery weather made fly balls an adventure(more on this later) and greatly effected outfield play.

Mets LH SP Oliver Perez was awful and unwatchable at the same time. It was painful to see him pitch this game, SNY color analyst Keith Hernandez  almost needed sedatives to make it thru Olie’s 3+ innings! Over 3 and a third innings, he allowed 2 hits and 4 runs(3 earned) while walking an incredible 7 Giants while K-ing 2. The southpaw threw 98 pitches(44 strikes) and appeared to be out of sync from pitch one. Amazing as it sounds, things could have been much worse for Perez but he escaped jams in the 2nd and 3rd innings. LH RP Raul Valdez took over for Perez and gave the Mets three and 2 third innings of much needed relief.

New York’s bats made two time NL CY Young award winner Tim Lincecum work hard for 6 innings. He threw 116 pitches(72 strikes) while allowing 7 hits and 2 runs. He K-ed 8 and walked 2 with Mets 1B Ike Davis and RF Jeff Francoeur collecting rbi singles in the 6th.  The Mets rallied vs the Giants bullpen in the 7th and took the lead. Bay hit a ball to left that SF LF Andres Torres lost in the wind, allowing the tying runs to score, NY 3B David Wright then put NY up 5-4 with a sacrifice fly to right.

With the Mets in the lead, Manager Jerry Manuel turned to rookie flamethrower Jenrry Mejia to pitch the 8th. The talented righty walked PH John Bowker to lead off the inning before allowing Rowand’s big blow. The ball did not appear to be a home run when it left the bat but every fly ball Sunday was a threat. Bay then lead off the home 9th with another wind added fly ball hit and he hustled the play into a double. However, Giants closer Brian Wilson struck out Wright(BAD call), Davis and Francoeur to secure the victory and end the Mets home win streak at 9. New York is now 17-14 on the season , face the Washington Nationals Monday at Citi Field in a battle for 2nd place in tough NL East.

GAME NOTES: Not the cleanest game you will see all season! Game time: 3:45!!… Mets 1st home loss since April 21st… NY pitchers walked 11 Giants while Giants gave 5 free passes to the Mets….. 2B Luis Castillo was out of the starting line-up with a left heal bruise but entered the game in the 8th…. LOB: Giants 12, Mets 11… SS Jose Reyes stole 2 bags and now has 8 on the season… Wright(4 Ks) was incensed with the third strike call in the 9th and was ejected by home plate umpire Paul Schrieber. Good thing the Mets did not tie the game, they were out of position players and would have had to put a pitcher in the field!…Mets bullpen blew 3 saves this weekend…  Unbelievable performance by Wilson, who is one of the best kept secrets in baseball. K-ed all 5 Mets batters he faced with his explosive fastball… 4 Mets had 2 hits: Davis, Bay, Reyes and CF Angel Pagan…

Blanco’s shot in 11th gives Mets 2nd consecutive win, defeating Giants 5-4

by @ 1:59 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

Henry Blanco homered to left to lead off the 11th inning, helping The New York Mets defeat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 Saturday afternoon at Citi Field.  The win was the Mets 9th straight at home and for the 2nd consecutive day NY won in walk off fashion, Blanco’s 3 hits paced the Mets attack. Johan Santana rebounded after his disastrous start vs the Phillies last Sunday night(10 runs and 8 hits(4 home runs) allowed in 3 and 2 third innings), looking strong. The ace lefty pitched into the 8th(7 and 2 third innings) while allowing 8 hits and 4 runs while K-ing 6 Giants. Unfortunately,  2 relievers could not get the final out before San Francisco tied the game at 4 with an Aubrey Huff single.

The Mets did not have a huge day offensively(7 hits) but continue to get timely hits while producing useful outs. CF Angel Pagan again led the way out at the top of the lineup, scoring the games 1st run(LF Jason Bay’s sacrifice fly)  in the home 1st. NY made it  3-0 in the 2nd when Pagan tripled home 1B Ike Davis(walk) and RF Jeff Francoeur(hbp). Huff(sac fly) and SS Juan Uribe(single) touched Santana for runs in te 4th. Bay put NY up 2 in the 5th when he plated SS Jose Reyes on a single to left.  With the win, The Mets are 17-13 on the year(13-5 at home) and have won this series regardless of Sunday’s outcome.

AMAZING: Someone from the Elias Sports Bureau should look up when was the last time a team won on back to back walk off home runs from DIFFERENT catchers. This team is starting to get a “feel” about it.

GAME NOTES: 2b Luis Castillo, who saved Friday nights game with a run preventing grab, left the game in the 8th inning with a bone bruise in his left foot. He is considered day to day…. Reyes stole his 6th base of the year… Rookie RH Jenrry Mejia struck out the one batter he faced to end the Giants 8th inning rally…. Cannot say enough about LH RP Hisanori Takahashi, who is now 3-1 with 3.20 ERA on the year, after earning the win Saturday. The Japanese League veteran has pitched in a variety of roles and has a strong K to walks ratio.(28 to 10)… Mets drew 7 walks, led by 2 apiece from 3B David Wright and Davis

Barajas walk off shot leads Mets over Giants,6-4

by @ 8:11 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

C Rod Barajas continued to show off his power(9 HRs on the year), as  he homered with a runner on in the 9th , leading the NY Mets to a 6-4 win over the San Francisco Giants Friday night at Citi Field.  The home run was Barajs second of the game while rookie 1B Ike Davis also hit 2 with the pair going back to back in the 2nd inning.  Mike Pelfrey was outstanding again, allowing 8 hits and 3 runs over 7 and third innings. He did not walk a batter and K-ed four while throwing 85 pitches.(61 for strikes) Fernando Nieve(5th hold, 3.63 ERA) finished the 8th but closer Francisco Rodriquez gave up a tying home run to PH John Bowker in the bottom of the 9th.   The win, one of the most exciting in recent memory, is the Mets 8th straight at Citi Field and NY is now 16-13 on the year.

DYNAMITE DEFENSE: The Mets made several great defensive plays in this game despite 3 errors. 2B Luis Castillo saved the game when he stopped a single from OF Mark DeRosa from reaching the centerfield thus preventing a run in the 8th. Davis then followed with a spectacular diving catch of a pop up into the Mets dugout to end the threat. 3B David Wright and Pelfrey also made  a fine play on a sacrifice bunt attempt from Giants SP Jonathan Sanchez.

GAME NOTES: SS Jose Reyes also had two hits for the Mets… LF Jason Bay drove in the games first run with  a deep double  to  Center in the 1st… Barajas has 17 rbi on the year, trailing only Wright for the team lead… Classy move by the Mets pregame as they honored the two Times Square Vendors who tipped Police about car bomb last weekend.  Duane Jackson and Lance Orton, Jr. took pictures with Mets Manager Jerry Manuel and were decked out in Mets garb…  Barajas now has 3 multi-homer games on the season. Not bad for guy who did not have a job when spring training opened, a great signing by GM Omar Minaya!

Cabrera’s 10th inning walk off helps Reds defeat Mets,5-4

by @ 7:43 pm. Filed under 2010 Mets

ERNIE HARWELL: Hard for me not to comment when someone as important as this man passes away in the state in which I reside. Just a great, great man who loved the game and people. Amazing that he was traded as a young announcer for a player! Countless stories about how this man remembered everyone’s name and his ability to treat a janitor like  the Pope and the Pope like a janitor. In other words, he treated all WELL. He has been gone for a little more than 24 hours and the local news is still leading with his death. A man who had tremendous class and massive appeal, he will be missed by many.  RIP, Ernie!

Underrated SS Orlando Cabrera hit a game winning homer just inside the Left Field foul pole, helping the Cincinnati Reds defeat the New York Mets 5-4 in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon at Great American Ball Park in Ohio. The wild 3 game series, won by the Reds 2-1, saw the teams combine for 11 solo home runs and each contest was decided by 1 run. Mets LH SP Jonathon Niese battled hard for 6 innings, allowing 12 hits and 4 runs while not walking a Red.  The 2nd year southpaw K-ed 4 batters while allowing rbi singles to  Ramon Hernandez and Cabrera in the 4th inning. Reds 2B Brandon Phillips and LF Jonny Gomes hit solo home runs in the 5th off Niese to cap the Cincinnati scoring in regulation. The Mets bats fought hard vs  Reds RH SP Johnny Cueto, scoring single runs in the 3rd(Bases Loaded walk to 2B Alex Cora) and 5th(SS Jose Reyes ground out). 3B David Wright, continuing to swing a hot bat,  homered in the 6th to cut the lead to 4-3.

Rookie LH Hisanori Takahashi pitched 3 tremendous innings in relief for NY and struck out 4.  NY then tied the game in the 9th off of Reds closer Francisco Cordero when  PH Frank Catalanatto walked to open the inning.  The Mets capitalized with a sacrifice bunt  from 2B Luis Castillo  and single from CF Angel Pagan(3 hits, walk) moved the lead runner to third.  RF Jeff Francoeur then tied the game at 4-4  with a  sacrifice fly to center.    The game stayed tied until Cabrera’s fifth career game-ending homer in the 10th, LH RP Pedro Feliciano  allowed the homer and took the loss. NY(15-13) has now lost 4 of 5 after winning 8 straight.

BAD BAY: Mets LF Jason Bay continues to struggle , going 0 for 12 with 5 Ks in the series.  He K-ed with runners in scoring position in the 5th and 7th to end rallies. Bay, who signed a four year 66 million dollar deal in December, has just 1 home run and 9 rbi on the year.

GAME NOTES: Gary Matthews Jr. singled in his 1st at bat ,leading off the 3rd. The hit ended an 0 for 15 streak  and Matthews is now 4 for 39 with 16 Ks in since April 7th. He started in RF to give Francoeur a day off… Mets left 7 on base and went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position… Wright has a hit in 9 straight games and 4 homers in those contests… An amazing 9 of the Reds 14 wins have come in the teams final at bat…. NY ends the 6 game road trip 2-4…. Pagan stole his 3rd base of the season… Mets are hitting an NL low .234

Barajas’ 2 out 9th inning homer leads Mets over Reds, 5-4

by @ 8:13 am. Filed under 2010 Mets

C Rod Barajas homered of Reds closer Francisco Cordero with 2 outs in the 9th, leading the NY Mets to a 5-4 victory over host Cincinnati Tuesday night.  RH SP John Maine continued to pitch well for NY, allowing 2 runs(1 earned) on 4 hits over 6 innings. He struck out 6 and walked 2 while allowing a home run to Reds 2B Brandon Phillips in the 1st inning. 3B David Wright crushed a 434 foot blast of Cincy starter Bronson Arroyo in the 4, while SS Jose Reyes had 2 hits, a run and rbi. RF Jeff Francoeur and LF Jason Bay added rbis for NY. RH RP Fernando Nieve had a rough outing and cost Maine a win while allowing back to back to homers in the 8th. 1B Joey Votto homered to center and veteran 3B Scott Rolen then hit a drive to right center that Mets CF Angel Pagan attempted to reach going into the stands. A fan touched the ball after it cleared Pagan’s glove and Mets skipper Jerry  Manuel argued interference. The umpires ruled correctly that the ball was a home run. With the win, The Mets stand at 15-12 and can win the series with victory Wednesday.

PELFREY UPDATE: Mets RH Mike Pelfrey, who is battling shoulder stiffness, threw a bullpen session this morning and should be good to go in his next start Friday vs the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field.

BIG TIME BARAJAS: The Mets catcher is quickly becoming King Clutch for the 2010 New York Mets. 4 of his 7 home runs have tied or put the Mets ahead.

MAINE MAJOR: In his last four starts, John Maine has allowed just 7 earned runs in 20 and 2 thirds innings. Very good sign with the Mets rotation coming together.

I LOVE CINCINNATI: NY is 17-9 in their last 26 games vs. the Reds.

Nix walk off shot wins it for the Reds in 11th, defeat Mets 3-2

by @ 11:43 am. Filed under 2010 Mets

OF Laynce Nix’s homer with 1 out in the 11th led the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-2 extra innings win over the New York Mets Monday night at Great American Ball Park in Ohio. CF Drew Stubbs homered leading off the game for the Reds but Mets LH SP Oliver Perez pitched very well overall, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits over 6 innings while K-ing and walking 4. The mercurial southpaw has an 0-2 record with a 4.05 ERA in 5 starts(26.2 innings pitched) and threw 68 of 108 pitches for strikes in Monday’s game,  Solid numbers for a 5th starter, salary and contracts aside. Mets RF Jeff Francoeur singled home 1B Ike Davis to tie the game in the 2nd while Reds 1B Joey Votto added his own rbi single in the 5th to put Cincinnati up 2-1. Jose Reyes tied the game in the 6th with a double to deep center off of Reds rookie starter Mike Leake(2-0,2.94 in 5 ML starts after going straight from College to the major leagues). The game became a battle of bullpens until Nix homered off of RH Manny Acosta with 1 out in the 11th, NY(14-12) has now lost 3 in a row after winning 8 straight.

GAME NOTES: LF Jason Bay saw his hitting streak end at 9 games…. RH SP Mike Pelfrey had a precautionary MRI on his right shoulder after being stiff during his start Saturday. The tests came back negative and he is expected to make his next start Wednesday…. 2b Luis Castillo, 3B David Wright and Reyes had 2 hits apiece to lead NY…Davis and Leake were college teammates at Arizona State…RH RP Kelvim Escobar will have season ending shoulder surgery after signing with the Mets this December… CF Carlos Beltran worked out for an hour in Port St. Lucie and reported no pain in his surgically repaired knee. The batting drill required no running and until he crosses that bridge, hard to evaluate when Beltran will return… Mets stranded runners in scoring position in the 6th, 7th and 11th innings

by @ 9:05 am. Filed under 2010 Mets

The two time defending NL Champion Philadelphia Phillies sent 13 men to the plate in the 4th inning, scoring 9 runs vs. Mets ace Johan Santana, helping them defeat the New York Mets 11-5 Sunday Night at Citizens Bank Park. The incredible 9 run rally occcured with 2 outs and the Mets leading 5-2, The big blow was a grand slam from CF Shane Victorino. 2B Chase Utley ended Santana’s night with a two run shot 2 batters later. Santana was touched for 10 runs and 8 hits(4 Home runs) in 3 and 2/3 innnings, he clearly had issues with command as well as control. 3B Placido Polanco and 1b Ryan Howard also homered for the Phillies while 3B David Wright(3 run shot) and C Rod Barajas(2 run homer of the LF foul pole) accounted for the NY offense. With the win, Philadelphia takes the showdown series 2 games to 1 and is now in sole possession of 1st in the highly competitive NL East.

Phillies use 6 run 4th to crush Mets, Pelfrey as win streak ends at 8, 10-0

by @ 9:09 am. Filed under 2010 Mets

The two time defending NL Champion Philadelphia Phillies showed why they are great team Saturday afternoon, punishing the Mets for mistakes, as they defeated NY 10-0 at Citizens Bank Park. Infielders Jose Reyes and Alex Cora could not make tough plays on two pop-ups and those two plays contributed to a back breaking 6 run inning for the Phillies. RH SP Mike Pelfrey saw his scoreless inning streak end at 27 in that frame with the big blow being a 3 run homer from Phillies lead off man Shane Victorino.  Roy Hallday was Roy Halladay, as the new Philadelphia ace was sensational, allowing only 3 hits(6 Ks) while throwing a complete game shutout vs the hottest team in the majors. Mets 3B David Wright and C Henry Blanco had doubles for NY while superstar 2B Chase Utley had 3 of the 13 Phillies hits.

OH BOY ROY: Watching the game yesterday had to be very disheartening for all fans in the NL for one simple reason: You all have to face Halladay for the next several years! This guy is an animal, beast, stud, etc— Choose your adjective wisely! The Mets have been hammering the ball and  he made them look like a Little League team. Important to note, this guy dominated the toughest division in MLB the past several seasons. Everyone knows how good the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays are, plus the Orioles can hit as well. Scary to think what his numbers will be at the end of the season. And he is doing this in a sandbox of a home park!

STREAK STOPPED: The loss ended NY’s win streak at 8.

MASHED MIKE: Pelfrey took the loss the Mets, allowing 8 hits and 6 runs over 4 innings after his record breaking April for NY. The big righty struck out 2 while walking 1.

FRANCOEUR PLAYS: Mets starting RF Jeff Francoeur, who is battling both knee and elbow injuries, talked his way into the lineup late Friday night. The Mets best every day player in April went 0 for 3.

RELAX: Today was one game, Mets fans. With Johan Santana pitching today, you win this game and take two of 3 from the Phillies. To quote a good baseball man(Michigan Baseball Coach Rick Maloney), Win the series!

Next Game:

Sunday, 8:05, Series conclusion at the Phillies, Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN
