Walk off slam propels Nationals past awful Mets, 7-4

by @ 5:33 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

A shocking grand slam by rookie OF Justin Maxwell off of Mets all star closer Francisco Rodriquez in the bottom of the 9th gave Host Washington a 7-4 win over NY Wednesday night at Nationals Park. NY had a 4-2 lead entering the 9th and saw it all disappear with Rodriquez allowing back to back singles then two walks before the slam from the Nationals rookie OF. The Mets now stand at 67-92 while Washington is 55-103. The Nationals swept the series while NY has lost 17 of 22.

Mets starter Tim Redding was great, tossing 6 innings of 4 hit ball. He walked and struck out 1 while throwing 95 pitches. 1B Fernando Tatis and C Omir Santos had rbi in the 2nd while CF Carlos Beltran singled home LF Angel Pagan in the 6th. Santos singled in another run in the 9th. 3 Mets had 2 hits apiece to pace the 7 hit attack: RF Jeff Francoeur, Tatis and Santos.

Francoeur had a drive in the 4th reviewed. The ball was called a double CORRECTLY and verified with video tape… Nationals star 1B-RF Adam Dunn was 0 for 4 and is in a 0 for 23 slump… Amazingly, the Nats were 0 for 87 trailing going into the 9th!… Game was delayed for 3 minutes in the 2nd… Mets rested 2B Luis Castillo….. Maxwell’s slam came on K-Rod’s 37 pitch in the 9th. This was his 7th blown save of 2009

Reyes update: Mets superstar SS Jose Reyes tore his hamstring while running in NY earlier this week, according to various sources. Surgery appears inevitable while he deals with this issue as well as the torn tendon behind his right knee.

Mets cannot hold early 3-0 lead, lose to Nationals,4-3

by @ 12:21 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

The host Washington Nationals(53-104) took advantage of some shaky New York  Mets defense to score the decisive  run in the 8th, helping them defeat NY 4-3.  The Mets were stacked to an early 3-0 lead with a bases loaded walk to CF Carlos Beltran in the  1st and rbi hits from LF Angel Pagan and 3B David Wright in the 2nd. Nationals SS Ian Desmond homered with a runner on in the 5th to  make it 3-2. All star 3B Ryan Zimmerman tied the score later in the inning with an rbi single. Mets starter Mike Pelfrey(10-12,5.03) went 7 innings, allowing 8 hits and 3 runs while K-ing 2 and walking 1.

Back to back throws from SS Anderson Hernandez and 2B Luis Castillo(throw went into the Nationals dugout) were off target and allowed the Nats to take the lead in the 8th.“It was kind of embarrassing to watch that kind of play — especially at that time of the game,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “Poor, poor, poor defensive play.” The mistakes allowed reliever Tyler Clippard(3-2,2.91, 3 holds)  to earn the win while Nationals closer Mike MacDougal earned his 18 save with a scoreless ninth.

Star of the Game: Desmond-Promising rookie looks like a long term answer for the Nationals in the infield.

4- CF Carlos Beltran

5- 1B Daniel Murphy

Morse’ power, Detwiller’s arm lead Nats past Mets 2-1

by @ 9:23 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Rookie Mike Morse’ third hit of the game, a solo home run in the 6th was the decisive run in pitchers battle, helping the Washington Nationals defeat the New York Mets 2-1 Monday night at Nationals Park. Both clubs had 7 hits apiece and veteran Nelson Figueroa was dealt the tough luck loss. Mets SS Anderson Hernandez had 2 of the 7 NY hits while Nationals CF Justin Maxwell and SS Ian Desmond added two apiece for Washington.

Figueroa(2-8,4.70), a well respected veteran, deserved a better fate and paid for one mistake. Over 6 innings, he allowed 6 hits and 2 runs with 5 Ks and 3 walks. The season could not end soon enough for the Brooklyn,NY native. “This is like Groundhog’s Day — I just want to wake up from it,” Figueroa said. “It just keeps happening and keeps happening. It’s just frustrating … because no one likes to lose, and I’m definitely not someone who’s going to sit there and say, ‘Well at least I put forth a good effort.’ I’m tired of losing. I hate losing.”

The teams scored single runs prior to the Morse’ homer. In the 1st inning, Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. The Mets countered when 1B Fernando Tatis singled home CF Carlos Beltran in the 6th. Nationals starter LH Ross Detwiller(1-6, 5.35) pitched great to earn his 1st ML win. He tossed 6 innings while allowing 7 hits and 1 run, he K-ed 3 and walked 1. “It feels great,” Detwiler said. “It kind of feels like I’ve got some pressure off myself.” RH Jason Bergmann(2-4,4.73,9 holds) tossed the 7th and 8th innings setting up Washington closer Mike MacDougal(1-1,4.50), who threw a perfect 9th for this 17th save.

Star of the Game: Figueroa- Classy vet is the type of guy the Mets need more of. Not the most talented guy, he battles, works and competes. A Pro’s Pro and pleasure to cover in a nightmare of a season for New York.

Mets starting line-up:

1- LF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- CF Carlos Beltran

5-  RF Jeff Francoeur

6- 1B Fernando Tatis

7- C Omir Santos

8- SS Anderson Hernandez

9- Pitcher

Game Notes: Figueroa is now 0-5 in September….NY now has 90 losses… Mets made two errors , both on throws. Hernandez and 3B David  Wright doing the deed… Team turned one double play.. Mets had 3 sacrifices, one each from LF Angel Pagan, Figueroa and 2B Luis Castillo… LH Pedro Feliciano appeared in his 85th game, one shy of his own club record(86). Misch's big outing leads Mets over Marlins 4-0, severely damaging Florida's post season hopes

by @ 4:51 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

LH Pat Misch(2-4,4.71) pitched a complete game shut out while RF Jeff Francoeur backed him with both his glove and bat, leading the visiting NY Mets to a 4-0 victory over the Florida Marlins Sunday afternoon at Land Shark Stadium in Miami. Misch, who was in danger of losing his rotation slot after an awful outing earlier in the week, allowed 8 hits but retired the final 13 Florida batters.  The crafty lefty, who has not pitched past the 7th all season, struck out 2 and walked 3. Francoeur drove in 2 runs with his 14 homer and robbed Chris Cohhlan of a homer in the 7th.

The win almost assuredly ends the Marlins faint NL wild card hopes with the Colorado Rockies leading by 5 with 6 games remaining for the Fish. Sweet revenge for Fans of the Mets, who saw the Marlins end their post season bid on the last day of the season in both 2007 and 2008. “It was great to get a win,” Misch said. “These guys have been beating us the last few years and knocking us out.”

Marlins swing starter Chris Volstad(9-13,5.21) went 4 innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. He struck out 2 and walked 2, allowing Francoeur’s homer for 2 runs. Rookie C Josh Thole plated the other run in the 2nd via a sacrifice fly. Coghlan and CF Cameron Maybin had 2 hits a piece to lead the Marlins offense. 3 relievers followed to pitch 5 innings. Only a homer by Mets 2B Anderson Hernandez in the 5th dented the Florida bullpen corps.

Star of the Game: Misch- Showed some stones throwing 110 pitches in 87 degree Miami heat! Should be strongly considered for some role on the 2010 Mets. Carried a 10.13 ERA in 3 games vs. the Marlins. “Misch made some good pitches when he needed to, and got out of some jams,” said Marlins 2B Dan Uggla, who stranded six runners. “Hats off to him.”

Mets starting line-up:

3- 1B Daniel Murphy

4- RF Jeff Francoeur

5- LF Cory Sullivan

6- 3B Fernando Tatis

7- C Josh Thole

Game Notes: In a season that they have caught few breaks, NY got one Sunday. Career Mets killer Josh Johnson, who posts a 7-0 record with a 2.30 ERA, was scratched with the flu…. 3B David Wright and CF Carlos Beltran were both given the day off…. A rarity in the National League: Mets used only nine players!! A Clean line-up sheet!… Misch entered the game with a 1-11 career record.. NY turned a rare 1-6-3 double play to escape a jam in the 5th…The Mets took the series with the win Sunday, going 2-1…. 2 of Valdez 3 hits did not leave the infield… Florida won the season series by a 11-7 margin… NY turned 3 double plays to support Misch… Florida had 11 base runners in the first 5 innings but went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position

7 run fifth leads Marlins over Mets 7-5

by @ 1:32 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Back up OF Cameron Maybin’s 3 run shot in the 5th was the big blow Saturday as the host Florida Marlins scored 7 of their 9 runs in the 5th, helping them to defeat an injury riddled New York Mets club 9-6 at Land Shark Stadium in Miami. CF Carlos Beltran and 1B Fernando Tatis(2 run) homered for NY who pounded out 11 hits in the loss. 1B Jorge Cantu had 3 hits to lead Florida. NY is now 66-89 while the Marlins stand at 83-72 while maintaing slim post season hopes. Florida trails wild card leading Colorado by 5 games with 8 to play.

Mets starter John Maine(6-6,4.72) battled but lost it in the 5th. He allowed 7 hits and 7 runs over 4 and 2 third innings while K-ing 3 and walking 2. He also threw 2 wild pitches and hit consecutive batters in the fourth. “In this muggy weather it was hard for me to breathe for the first couple innings, but after that it was OK,” Maine said. Florida starter Sean West(8-6,4.79) worked 5 frames, allowing 3 runs(2 earned) and 7 hits. The southpaw walked none and K-ed 2 while earning the win.

Star of the Game: Maybin- Injury replacement(took over for Ross) has the biggest hit of the night.  A player and name to remember in 2010!

Mets starting line-up:

1- LF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- CF Carlos Beltran

5- RF Jeff Francoeur

6- 1B Fernando Tatis

7- C Omir Santos

8- SS Anderson Hernandez

9- Pitcher

Apology from the Franchise:  Mets 3B David Wright made a huge mental error on the base paths in the 5th. He appeared to slow down as  he was scoring with 2 outs only to see Francoeur thrown out at 2nd trying to stretch a single into a double. “That wasn’t a good play at all. He came in and apologized to the team, but at the same time you expect more from your core players than what he gave,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “Just a mental mistake. That’s my fault,” Wright said. “I’ll take responsibility and it won’t happen again.”

Game Notes: Marlins OF Cody Ross left the game in the 4th with a wrist contusion after being hit by Maine. He is considered day to day… Mets did not draw a walk… NYs Regular 1B Daniel Murphy was given the day off… SS Jose Reyes ran pregame to test his right hamstring. “How he feels (Sunday) and the next day will determine the progression,” said Manuel. The Mets skipper does not believe his leadoff man will return this season however… 4 Mets had 2 hits apiece to pace the offense, Pagan, Castillo, Tatis and Hernandez…. West is 5-2 with a 4.67 ERA in his last 9 starts

Mets gain some revenge as Sullivan's late hit severely damages Marlins post season hopes,6-5

by @ 8:42 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

PH Cory Sullivan’s 2 run pinch hit single scored the winning runs in the bottom of the ninth, leading the visiting New York Mets(66-88) to a 6-5 come from behind victory over the Florida Marlins(82-72), doing some heavy damage to the fish’  postseason bid. The loss now puts the Marlins 5 games behind the NL wild card leading Colorado Rockies, who staged another walk off win Friday night.  “The hill gets a little steeper but we have a team that is resilient,” Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “We are in a situation that we have to win every game and get help.”

Both the Mets and Marlins got solid pitching performances from their starters as NY veteran Tim Redding and talented Florida power arm Ricky Nolasco pitched into the 6th. (Redding thew 6+ , Nolasco 7) However, each allowed a 3 run shot to the other teams best player with  Florida’s SS Hanley Ramirez( 5th inning) and Mets RF Jeff Francoeur(2nd) both doing the deed. Redding(3-6,5.29) allowed 6 hits and 4 runs while walking 4 and K-ing 3. Nolasco, who  left in line to get the win, gave up 4 hits and the 3 runs on the homer while striking out 7 and walking 1.

The game came down to the bullpens and New York’s relief corps, a major culprit in the collapse of 2008, won out. After Florida’s INF Jorge Cantu drove home two runs in the 7th, the Mets caught a break to cut the score to 5-4 in the 8th. A passed ball on a strikeout by 3B David Wright allowed C Brian Schneider to score from 3rd. This set the tone for the heroics of Sullivan in the 9th. After Florida closer Leon Nunez(4-6,4.23,24 saves) allowed two singles to start the frame, PH Jeremy Reed drew a walk. Sullivan then singled home two runs for the win. Mets closer Francisco Rodriquez allowed a single in the 9th but retired Ramirez for the 2nd out and then K-ed Canti swinging for a nice 6-5 victory and his 34th save.

Star of the Game: The  Mets team- Showed a ton of heart and guts in this game, two qualities that have been questioned by many in the industry. Many teams would have lied down in this spot, you have to wonder if some of the vets here- Wright and Beltran in particular- have long memories about the Marlins partying like it was 1999 at their expense the past two seasons.  We needed a win like that regardless of the role we’re playing,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “We needed to continue to show the effort and every now and then you’ll get a big hit.”

Mets starting line-up:

2- 2B Luis Castillo

Game Notes: Interesting report on Matthew Cerrone’s metsblog.com about the lack of home runs at Citi-Field. The opposition has hit 81 homers, tied for 5th in the National League. Interesting that the team has given up 71 bombs on the road. Goes to show you the impact that long term  injuries to 1B Carlos Delgado and CF Carlos Beltran combined with a down year from 3B David Wright can do to power numbers. As Matthew points out, players hit homers, parks are part of it but power hitters hit them anywhere. See Mark Reynolds, Adam Dunn and Ryan Howard, who all hit moon shots at Citi this year. Heck,  before his injury, Delgado hit 2 or 3 rockets ….Wright was 0 for 4 striking out each at bat. He is hitting .224 with 29 Ks since his return from his August beaning September 1…. Ex Met reliever Octavio Dotel would like to return to NY and prefers pitching for the Mets over the Yankees, according to a report in the Chicago Sun-Times. In the last two seasons, he has posted a 7-7 record with a 3.58 ERA in 133 appearances while K-ing 166 batters in 128 innings… Pagan, Murphy and Francoeur had 3 hits apiece to pace NY…Rookie Bobby Parnell who just returned to the pen, earned the win with a clean 8th. He is now 4-8 with a 5.40 ERA. KEEP HIM IN THE PEN, GUYS!!!!… Nunez blown save was his 7th of the year

Take That!: “Knowing that the Marlins have knocked out the Mets out of the race the last two years it’s an extra benefit,” Sullivan said.

Mets strand 11 runners, lose to Braves 5-2

by @ 8:46 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

If baseball was only about leaving men on base! The weak hitting New York Mets stranded 11 runners and got the the leadoff man on base the last 7 innings of the game, greatly contributing to their latest defeat, 5-2 Wednesday night to the Atlanta Braves at Citi-Field. NY was 2 for 18 with runners in scoring position while regularly hitting the ball into the ground and taking some god awful swings. 1B Adam Laroche led the 11 hit Braves attack going 3 for 5 with 2 rbi and a run. RF Matt Diaz and LF Garret Anderson added two hits apiece for Atlanta while SP Tim Hudson spread out 9 hits over 6 frames for his 2nd win since returning from elbow surgery(3.59 ERA in that span). Atlanta has now won 11 of 13 and 8 straight from the battered Mets, who have lost 9 of 11 and 13 of 16.

Starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey(10-12,5.08) allowed 4 runs-3 earned- and 9 hits over 6 innings. He knows this season has been a disaster for both he and his team. “It’s tough. It’s like going to work every day and having a bad day,” Pelfrey said. “I definitely need a break, a chance to clear my head and come back next year ready to go. Any way you look at it, I’ve had a bad year.” LF Angel Pagan, CF Carlos Beltran, RF Jeff Francoeur and C Brian Schneider all had two hits to pace the NY attack.

Star of the Game: Laroche- Great deadline acquisition by the Braves. If you don’t think Daniel Murphy is the answer at 1B, wouldn’t this guy look good at Citi-Field? Team leader as well, listen to him talk about his manager’s big day postgame:“That was nice. It was a good little gift for him,” Adam LaRoche said. “We’ve done everything we can to get back in this.”

Mets starting line-up:

1- LF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- CF Carlos Beltran

5- 1B Daniel Murphy

6- RF Jeff Francoeur

Game Notes: Long time(2 stints totaling over 20 years) Atlanta Braves skipper Bobby Cox announced pre game that he has signed an extension thru 2010 and  he will retire after that campaign. Love or hate the Braves, Cox is a pleasure to deal with for us media types and will be surely missed…. Hudosn is now 10-6 in 16 career starts vs. NY… The Mets luck might be contagious! Braves had 3 players go down in the last 24 hours” C Brian McCann was back in the line-up after bruising his wrist while 2b Martin Prado tweaked a knee in batting practice. Career Mets killer Chipper Jones was pulled in the 7th with a bad back… The Braves sweep was the first on the road vs NY since the July 2003 sweep at Shea Stadium…  Wright played his 835th game at Third base tying hitting coach Howard Johnson’s team record… Braves take the season series 13-5… 2B Luis Castillo stole his 19th base

Jurrjens outpitches Figueroa as Braves handle Mets, 3-1

by @ 7:09 am. Filed under 2009 Mets

The visiting Atlanta Braves took advantage of the few opportunities they had, scoring 3 runs in a contest that featured only 10 hits, helping them defeat a depleted NY Mets team 3-1 Tuesday night at Citi-Field. The Braves have won 6 straight road contests and 10 of 12 overall, while NY has lost 8 0f 10. The Mets have now dropped 7 straight to Atlanta,“We lose seven straight to anybody, it stings,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “They have for the most part dominated us. You have to give them credit, but they have kept most of their players on the field for the most part.”

Braves starter Jair Jurrjens(13-10,2.70) was great and out pitched Mets veteran starter Nelson Figueroa(2-7,4.88), who allowed only 2 hits while throwing a career high 126 pitches. “It’s my fault for not finishing the deal. I got two out and didn’t get the third until it was too late,” Figueroa said. “The pitch count doesn’t matter. I’m not a young prospect. You go with the tempo of the game. It wouldn’t have mattered to me if I went out there for another inning.”

Braves SS Yunel Escobar, one of the more underrated players in the NL, had the big hit of the game in the 4th, a two run, two out single that scored 2B Martin Prado and 3B Chipper Jones.  Jurrjens really settled down and attacked after allowing the game’s first run in the 3rd. He allowed only 5 hits while walking 3 and striking out 2.  The Braves scored a huge insurance run in the  9th when Escobar doubled off Mets closer Francisco Rodriquez(3-5,3.15,33 saves) to lead off the inning. 1B Adam Laroche singled him in and it was 3-1.

Star of the Game: Jurrjens- Has allowed only two earned runs over his last 3 starts, covering 22 innings. The righty is now 6-1 in 8 career starts vs. the Mets including 4-0 with a 1.60 ERA in 5 starts in 2009.

Mets starting Line-up:

Game Notes: Veteran Mets OF Gary Sheffield wants to play in 2010 and aims to dress for 150 games. He named the Mets, Marlins and Rays as possible desinations, a 4th mystery team was also in the report by Kevin Kernan in the Tuesday NY Post….Mets INF Alex Cora, who had the same surgery on his right thumb 5 weeks ago, underwent surgery on a torn ligament in his left thumb. The popular utility man is out for the season… To celebrate Hispanic Heritage night, the Mets wore Los Mets jerseys… 2B Luis Castillo drove in the lone Mets run in the 3rd with a single that scored SS Anderson Hernandez… Escober and  Prado had 2 hits to pace Atlanta while Castillo and C Brian Schneider did the same for NY…. Outstanding job by the back end of the Braves pen with RH Peter Moylan(6-2,2.81,23 holds) tossing a clean 8th and fireballing closer Rafael Soriano(3.12) striking out the side in the 9th for this  25th save… Braves all star C Brian McCann left in the 4th with a wrist injury. Braves put up 8 runs in first 2 innings, punish Misch, Mets,11-3

by @ 7:21 am. Filed under 2009 Mets

Atlanta Braves superstar 3B Chipper Jones homered and drove in 4 runs leading a 10 hit attack, as the visiting Halos crushed the New York Mets 11-3 Monday night at Citi-Field. OFs Garrett Anderson and Matt Diaz also homered for Atlanta(80-70), winners of 9 of 11 and 6 straight vs the Mets(65-86). 2B Luis Castillo and 1B Daniel Murphy(homer) led NY with 2 hits apiece. Braves veteran RH Derek Lowe(15-9) pitched 5 innings for the win, allowing 3 runs and 6 hits while K-ing 5.

Mets starter Pat Misch was hit hard and often and gone midway thru the 2nd inning. He allowed 7 hits and 8 runs over 1 and a third innings, he walked 1 and strike out 1. “I really threw bad pitches,” Misch said. “Just elevated, too much plate. The last two starts I haven’t pitched down low.” RH Lance Broadway finished the inning and tossed the 3rd, he allowed the final 3 Braves runs. Rookie Tobi Stoner then pitched 2 clean innings with Bobby Parnell(1 frame), Ken Takahashi(1 inning) and Brian Stokes(2) followed with 6 shutout innings.

One positive for NY? The play of 1B Daniel Murphy, who is hitting .358(19-53) in his last 14 games. He has 3 homers and 12 rbi in those contests, He is skipper is noticing.”I like the way Daniel Murphy is swinging the bat,” said manager Jerry Manuel, searching for something positive in New York’s latest loss. “He’s really coming on.”

Star of the Game: Chipper Jones-Has 42 homers vs the Mets and is tied with another Mets killer, ex Phillie Pat Burrell, for the 5th most bombs vs NY

3- 3B David Wright

4- CF Carlos Beltran

5- 1B Daniel Murphy

Game Notes: Braves did not have a hit after the 3rd inning… Murphy is hitting .304 in September. He is also tied with St. Louis Cardinals superstar 1B Albert Pujols for the most extra base hits in September….Mets are 5-11 vs. Atlanta this season and have been outscored 106-65 in the 16 games…. Jones, who should be an easy Hall of Famer, carries the following career numbers vs NY in 203 games: .324 batting average, 42 homers and 133 rbis. He hit 19 homers at the Mets former home, Shea Stadium, his highest total in any park.. Manuel pulled Castillo, Wright and Beltran with the game out of hand.  Luis Left in the 4th, David in the 6th and Beltran in the 7th.. Misch reportedly is in danger of losing his rotation spot. Maine wins for 1st time since May, Mets beat Nationals 5-2

by @ 1:13 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

4 relievers backed up starter John Maine, who won for the first time since May, leading the New York Mets to a 6-2 win over the Washington Nationals Sunday afternoon at Citi-Field in Queens. LF Angel Pagan had 3 hits while CF Carlos Beltran had two hits, an rbi and run. 1B Daniel Murphy’s (2 hits)   2 run double and SS Wilson Valdez ‘ 2 run 9th inning(Huge late game insurance) triple were the big blowns of the game.  The Mets win(65-85) allows them to take 2 of 3 in this battle of last place NL East Teams.

Maine(6-5,4.13), making his 2nd start since June after battling pain in his throwing shoulder, allowed two singles and a walk in 5 innings. He threw 75 pitches(50 for strikes), looking free and easy with his delivery. Elmer Dessens(2 innings), Sean Green and Brian Stokes followed(These 3 retired 12 batters in a row before the Nats 9th inning mini-rally) . Stokes allowed 2 runs in the 9th but Manager Jerry Manuel summoned closer Francisco Rodriquez for a game ending strikeout with 2 runners on to earn his 33rd save.

Star of the Game: Maine- Promising sign that this talented starter battled back to pitch in these meaningless September contests.

Mets starting line-up:

1- LF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- CF Carlos Beltran

5- 1B Daniel Murphy

6- RF Jeff Francoeur

7- C Josh Thole

8- SS Wilson Valdez

9- Pitcher

Game Notes: Castillo(2 hits, sacrifice) stole his 17th base for the Mets… NY had 5 2 out rbi….Maine walked and struck out the same number, one… Rookie C Josh Thole continues to look like a stud, he was 1 for 2 with a run and rbi. He also walked twice… No Nationals player had more than one hit….Valdez looks like a player for NY. Makes good plays in the field and has a strong throwing arm. Good back up infielder candidate for 2010… Washington RH starter Garrett Mock pitched 6 innings, allowing 7 hits and 5 runs. He K-ed 2 and walked 2 as well… Maine is now 8-3 with a 4.20 ERA in 13 career starts vs, the Nationals. His 8 wins vs. Washington, giving him his highest total vs. any opponent… Murphy is hitting .347(17 for 49) with 2 homers and 11 rbi in his last 13 games

Redding’s big day helps Mets end losing streak, defeat Nationals 3-2

by @ 2:41 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Veteran RH Tim Redding pitched into the 8th inning while RF Jeff Francoeur had 2 hits and an rbi double, leading the slumping New York Mets to a 3-2 win over the visiting Washington Nationals Saturday afternoon at Citi-Field in Queens. NY(64-85) won for only the 2nd time in 12 games and helped  avoid their longest losing streak since 2004, when the Mets lost 11 straight from August 28 to September 8, 2004. 1B Daniel Murphy added 2 rbi for NY while 3B David Wright added a double, 2 walks and an run.“That was a nice win,” Francoeur said. “We needed that real bad.”

Redding was outstanding for NY, pitching  into the 8th(7 innings credited) while allowing only 4 hits and 2 runs(1 earned) while K-ing 4 and walking 2. He had a great rapport with rookie phenom Josh Thole behind the plate and it showed, with 19 first pitch strikes to 26 batters faced! Translation? Time of game 2 hours and 18 minutes!!!! “There’s a couple good football games that started about 25 minutes ago. I told him, ‘Let’s keep the pace of this game going,’ ” Redding said. RH Sean Green(4.92,13 holds)  recorded 2 outs in the 8th before LH Pedro Feliciano(3.02,22 holds) got Nationals slugger Adam Dunn to ground out with the tying run at 3rd.

Nationals starter & Long Beach native John Lannan(9-12), who had not allowed an earned run to the Mets in 19 innings, was the tough luck loser for Washington.  Over 7 innings, he allowed 5 hits and 3 runs while striking out 3 and walking 1. The talented southpaw had tossed two previous complete games vs. NY, including a shutout. A big reason why Lannan lost was Francoeur, who despite playing with a serious finger injury, is hitting .475(19 for 40) in his last 10 games.”I feel good. I feel confident,” Francoeur said. “I’m a happy-go-lucky guy and I’m trying to keep this clubhouse that way. It’s a tough season.” The Mets RF carries a 10 for 19 record with 6 rbis vs. the Washington ace.

Star of the Game: Redding- Nice to see this solid team guy and class act get rewarded. Has pitched well lately and will take the ball in any situation. Was given a huge ovation from the 37,000 plus who came out to support the Mets on this beautiful afternoon.

Mets starting line-up:

1- CF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Weight

4- RF Jeff Francoeur

5- LF Fernando Tatis

6- 1B Daniel Murphy

7- SS Wilson Valdez

8- C Josh Thole

9- Pitcher

Game Notes: CF Carlos Beltran was given the day off…. Since returning to the rotation August 22, Redding has allowed more than 3 earned runs once and lowered his ERA by half a run…. Francoeur has hit .309 with 7 home runs and 33 rbi in 61 Mets games…Dunn now has 100 rbi… First 6 innings of the contest took 74 minutes… Redding is now 3-0 vs. the Nats in his career  but does not consider them a walk in the park.“Those guys are putting runs on the board,” Redding said. “I know they’ve been struggling lately, but you can’t take them lightly. They’ve got some thump.”

Mets 9th inning rally comes up one short as Nationals win 6-5

by @ 8:27 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

The visiting Washington Nationals hung on by a  glove, handing the slumping New York Mets a tough 6-5 loss Friday night at CitiField in Queens. RF Jeff Francoeur’s liner knocked Nationals closer Mike MacDougal’s glove off but he recovered quickly to grab the ball and record the final out at 1st. 3B Ryan Zimmerman hit his 30th homer and C Josh Bard had 3 hits to lead the Washingto offense. The Mets have lost 6 straight and 10 of 11, they are now 63-85.

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey(10-11, 5.10) did not pitch poorly but he made 2 big mistakes that left the park. Zimmerman(1st inning) and Bard(5th inning) homered with a runner on to account for 4 of the 5 runs(4 earned) charged to the big righty. Over 7 innings, Pelfrey allowed 8 hits and walked none. He struck out 4 while throwing 90 pitches.(an impressive 63 strikes)

NY scored 2 runs in the 3rd vs. Nats starter J.D. Martin(5-4,4.21). Martin, oneof the better pitchers you have not heard of, threw into the 6th(5 and a third innings) while allowing 7 hits and 2 runs. He walked 2 and K-ed 3. 3 relievers got the game the game to MacDougal, who earned his 16th save after allowing 3 runs(2 earned) in the 9th. RBI hits from 3B David Wright and Beltran plus an error by the rookie Washington SS pulled the Mets to within one and Francoeur’s ball would have been the game winner. Instead, another frustrating loss in an equally  frustrating campaign.   “It’s been that kind of season,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said.

Star of the Game: Zimmerman— Wright’s boyhood teammate is one of the better 3rd baggers in the game. He also scored his 100th run, which leads the Nationals and is his career high.

Effort? Good!: When you see the quality at bats the Mets put on in the 9th, you can not fault the effort of this team. For one, Beltran, on a bad knee, tripped and fell beating out his 9th inning ball. “They’re fighting,” Manuel said. “They put forth a tremendous effort. You can’t say that about many clubs that are in the position we’re in, that are going to put forth that type of effort to come back.”

Mets starting line-up:

1- LF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- CF Carlos Beltran

5- 1B Daniel Murphy

6- RF Jeff Francoeur

7- C Brian Schneider

8- SS Wilson Valdez

9- Pitcher

No Luck:  It’s unbelievable. I told Jerry, I was sitting in the hole and I told him, ‘I am going to win this thing tonight,” Francoeur said. “It’s one of those that right away, right when you hit it, you think you win. I mean, you hit it right back up the middle. It would have been so big for us to have that ball get to the outfield and win. I thought we deserved it, to be honest with you. But that’s not the way it goes.”

Game Notes: 1B Carlos Delgado is officially out for the remainder of the 2009 campaign according to skipper Jerry Manuel. His surgically repaired hip is not an issue but he has an oblique strain as well as back pain….Francoeur had 3 hits to pace NY while 2B Luis Castillo and CF Carlos Beltran added 2 hits each… Zimmerman and RF Adam Dunn are the 2nd 30-30 pair in the history of the Expos-Nationals franchise. OF Brad Wilkerson and SS Tony Batista accomplished the same feat in 2004 for the Expos… NY is 22 games below .500 for the first time since finishing 66-95 in 2003… Nats won for only the 5th time in 19 games… Washington LF Josh Willingham, a great bat, made 2 fine defensive plays in both the 3rd and 6th innings

McCann’s homer the big blow as Braves handle Mets again, 7-3

by @ 10:46 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

All star C Brian McCann drove in 4 runs and his 3 run homer in the 4th inning was the big blow of the game as the host Atlanta Braves(78-68) defeated the New York Mets 7-3 (63-84) Thursday night at Turner Field in Georgia. The victory gave the Braves a 3 game sweep over the awful Mets. Atlanta has won 7 in a row for the first time since 2006 while NY has lost 9 of 10 and 5 straight. 3B Martin Prado had 3 hits while Mets rookie 1B Daniel Murphy paced the Mets with 3 hits and a homer.

Mets veteran starter Nelson Figueroa(2-6,5.21) did not pitch awful but had issues with McCann, who touched him for all 4 of his rbi. A Prado double and McCann sacrifice fly made it 2-0 in the 3rd. McCann then homered with CF Nate McLouth(2 hits, 2 runs) and Prado on board. Figueroa was charged with 6 runs over 5 innings while allowing 9 hits and 1 walk. He K-ed 4. “It’s very difficult,” Figueroa said of New York’s skid. “You don’t want to go out this way. It’s one thing to be out of it and another thing to continue to lose.”

Jair Jurrjens,as he has been most of the season, was outstanding.  Over 7 innings, he allowed 6 hits and 2 runs(1 earned) while K-ing 5 and walking  2. The win pulled the Braves to within 4.5 games of the NL wild card leading Colorado Rockies.”This is definitely going to be big for us,” said Jair Jurrjens, who pitched seven strong innings against the Mets. “We just need to keep winning, winning series, keep winning every game we can right now.”

Star of the Game: McCann- Best catcher in the NL and one of the least publicized stars of the game. Over his last 6 games, he is 11 for 22 with 9 rbi. He is very excited about the direction of his teams direction. This is the best we’ve played since I’ve been here,” McCann said. “It feels great because we could have folded. That could have been it. I think we’re playing with a carefree attitude. There’s nothing to lose. At the end [of the regular season], we hope it will be enough. We’ll see.”

Mets starting line-up:

1- CF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- 1B Daniel Murphy

5- RF Jeff Francoeur

6- C Josh Thole

7- LF Fernando Tatis

8- SS Wilson Valdez

9- Pitcher

Game Notes: Mets skipper Jerry Manuel announced will return to the bullpen after 8 starts. His season numbers stand at 3-8 with 5.60 ERA ERA. He posted a 1-5 record with 7.93 ERA while in the rotation…Mets are 21 games under .500, their lowest point since the second to last game of the 2004 campaign… Tatis had 2 rbi…  The start of the game was delayed by 2 hours and 12 minutes due to rain…. Wright stole his 25th base…. NY turned 2 double plays… Murphy’s homer, his 10th, tied him with Wright and OF Gary Sheffield for the team lead.LOL!!!!

Message from the Mets leader: Why does this team have 20 fewer wins than in 2008, when they stood at 83-64 and led the NL East. The difference is you have to go back to the health issue,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “If you don’t have players in place, you can’t do anything consistently. The guys are putting forth good effort. You can’t question the effort. We’ve just fallen short.”

Quick Question: Why is Francoeur playing? He needs surgery on his thumb and this team is so done they are in the oven.

Murphy’s 2 misplays help Braves rally to hand Mets another backbreaking loss, 6-5

by @ 9:38 am. Filed under 2009 Mets

In a game that started over 2 hours late because of rain, the host Atlanta Braves railed for 2 runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the New York Mets 6-5 Wednesday night at Turner Field. Although the Mets outhit the Braves 16 to 9, they held only a 1 run lead entering the ninth at 5-4. Rookie 1B Daniel Murphy allowed a barely fair liner past him to lead off the inning and then booted ex Met Ryan Church’s ball twice to allow the winning run to score. 3B David Wright and RF Jeff Francoeur both had 3 hits to pace the Mets attack.

Mets rookie pitcher  Bobby Parnell(3-8,5.60) again struggled in a starting role. He pitched into the 4th(3 and a third) allowing 7 hits and 4 runs(3 earned) while striking out 4 and walking 3. He threw 83 pitches but only 46 for strikes. The Mets make shift bullpen kept them in the game as 5 pitchers combined to hand the ball to closer Francisco Rodriquez for a 4 out save opportunity in the 8th. He struck out Prado to end the 8th.

The 9th inning saw K Rod gave up only 1 hit but he was handed his 6th blown save in 37 chances. Garrett Anderson doubled to right on a ball that Murphy probably should have knocked down. After a hit by pitch, sacrifice and intentional walk, 2b Omar Infante(2 hits, 2 rbi, run)  tied it with a sacrifice fly. Church then hit his ball to 1st and the Braves won their 6th straight. “I’ve got to make that play,” Murphy said. “I make it 100 times. I booted it and tonight we lost the ballgame.”

Star of the Game: 3B Martin Prado- 3 of Braves 9 hits

Mets starting line-up:

3- 3B David Wright

Game Notes: C Josh Thole(.423), CF Carlos Beltran and SS Wilson Valdez had 2 hits apiece for NY….Mets left 14 men on base while Atlanta stranded 12…. Braves starting pitcher Derek Lowe left the game in the 2nd with a blister on his pitching hand…. Game was officially delayed 2 hours and 18 minutes… Braves set-up man Mike Gonzalez was pulled in the 8th with back stiffness… OF Gary Sheffield pinch hit in the 8th marking his first game activity since August 28th. lining out to right… C Omir Santos hit his 1st career pinch hit homer in the 8th to give NY the 5-4 lead

Fan Friendly: Hats off to the management of the Atlanta Braves, who allowed fans in the upper levels to move into better premium seats due to the long rain delay.

Minor League Player of the Year: 1B Ike Davis was named Mets Sterling Minor-League Player of the Year. He posted a .309 average with .386 OBP with 27 extra bases hits and 43 RBI in 55 games in Double-A. He is a good candidate to be at 1B sometime in 2010.

Delgado, Reyes Not close: According to a report in the Newark Star Ledger, both 1B Carlos Delgado and SS Jose Reyes are not close to returning to the Mets and are more than likely out for the year. Delgado took batting practice indoors at Turner Field in Tuesday/ Reyes is receiving massages on his leg but their is not timetable or further updates on his status.

Hanson and Laroche too much for Mets, Braves by TKO,6-0

by @ 12:00 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Stud rookie righty Tommy Hanson(10-3,2.65) was outstanding and 1B Adam Laroche homered twice in support as the Atlanta Braves(76-68) punished the visiting New York Mets 6-0 Tuesday night at Turner Field in Georgia.  CF Nate McLouth drove in 3 runs for the Braves while Mets 1B Daniel Murphy had 2 of the clubs 4 hits.  NY (63-82) have  lost 7 of 8 and managed only one hit in 6 innings vs. the Braves 1st year phenom with Hanson not allowing a runner past 2nd base.

Star of the Game: Hanson- Get used to seeing this young man and his amazing right arm. “He looks like a very good young pitcher,” New York manager Jerry Manuel said. “We’ll probably be battling him a long time in this division. It looks like he has command of all his pitches. When he gets behind in the count, he can go to his off-speed pitches. That’s a good trait.”

He walked one with no strikeouts…Braves 2B Omar Infante had 3 hits… Mets were officially eliminated from postseason contention Monday, the final 18 games are just to play out the string…. Pedro comes back to haunt the Mets as he shuts them out for 8, Phillies win 1-0

by @ 9:00 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Former Mets starter Pedro Martinez pitched 8 brilliant innings and was  backed by 1 first inning run, leading the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 win over New York in the nightcap of a Sunday doubleheader at Citizens Bank Park. Phillies 2B Chase Utley singled home SS Jimmy Rollins for the games only run making Mets veteran starter Tim Redding(2-6) the tough luck loser.“You have to tip your hat to the Hall of Famer on the other side of the mound,” Redding said. “It was a great game both ways.” The Mets classy righty allowed 3 hits while walking 2 and K-ing 3 in his 6 innings. He did not allow a hit after the 2nd inning and retired 14 in a row at one point.NY SS Anderson Hernandez was the only player on either team to collect double digit hits. Ryan Madson allowed a single in the 9th but recorded his 8th save. The win gives the 1st place Phillies a rare double header sweep as they took 3 out of 4 from the floundering Mets.

Martinez(5-0,2.87) used an amazing 130 pitches to strike out 7 while allowing 6 hits over his 8 frames. He retired 10 straight Mets at one point and Philadelphia is 7-0 when he starts. “If I’m healthy, I feel like I’m able to do anything anybody does,” Martinez said. He allowed a two out double to 1B Daniel Murphy and had to campaign to Manager Charlie Manuel to finish the 8th. “I convinced Charlie to give me one more out,” Martinez said. Amazingly, a change up bounced in the dirt and  Murphy was thrown out at 3rd base by Phillies C Carlos Ruiz.

Star of the game: Martinez- Depleted Mets line-up or not, this guy pitched his rear-end off. “When he is on, he has instincts that makes him a tough pitcher any time,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. Martinez, who pitched for NY from 05-08, is also sympathetic to the season his former teammates are suffering thru. “I have to tell you, I’m sorry for them,” Martinez said.

Mets starting line-up:

1- 2B Luis Castillo

2- RF Cory Sullivan

3- 3B David Wright

4- CF Carlos Beltran

5- 1B Daniel Murphy

6- LF Fernando Tatis

7- C Brian Schneider

8- SS Anderson Hernandez

9- Pitcher

Not a Good night for the Mets GM: Pedro did everything but beg Mets GM Omar Minaya for a chance to pitch here. He signed Oliver Perez, Redding and Livan Hernandez instead. Now Martinez is 5-0 and goes along the list of Minaya mistakes of 2009. The man signed for a pro-rated $2 million plus incentives. He is a gate attraction and tough economy or no tough economy, he would have paid for himself. BAD job by Minaya here.

Game Notes: OF-INF Fernando Tatis left the game in the 2nd inning with a sprained left index finger. Jeremy Reed replaced him… Mets turned 1 double play while Hernandez stole his 7th base… Rookie C Josh Thole pinch hit in the 7th for Redding and lined out. He is now hitting .421 over 19 ABs… NY has lost 6 0f 7 games and stands at a season worst 18 games under .500 at 63-81… Martinez’ 130 pitches were the most he has thrown since Oct.1,2003 vs. the Oakland A’s in the playoffs when he was pitching for the Boston Red Sox

Mets almost pull out another comeback vs. Phillies bullpen, come up short 5-4, Maine pitches 3 innings

by @ 12:37 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

The New York Mets almost pulled out a big rally in the 9th for the 2nd consecutive day but came up a run short, losing 5-4 to the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies in game 1 of a double header Sunday at Citizens Bank Park in Pennsylvania. NY scored 4 runs in the final 2 innings and had the tying run at 1st when the game ended on a strikeout. Rookie C Josh Thole had 4 of the Mets 10 hits while CF Shane Victorino and RF Ben Francisco both topped the Phillies with 2 hits apiece. Series finale is tonight at 8:05 pm on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN.

Mets starter John Maine, making his 1st starter since June 6th, looked good in his return from shoulder weakness(57 pitches, maxed out at 92 MPH). He allowed 2 hits and 1 run over 3 innings while K-ing 2 and walking 1. Rookie Tobi Stoner followed and allowed 3 runs over 3 frames while RH Lance Broadway gave up the final run 8th while pitching 2 innings. Phillies RH Kyle Kendrick pitched into the 8th , allowing only a 2 run shot to 2B Anderson Hernandez in his final frame. He was touched for 7 hits while K-ing 3 and walking 1. Closer Brad Lidge(29th save) gave up rbi singles to C Josh Thole and LF Jeremy Reed in the 9th  but struck out CF Angel Pagan to secure the win.

Star of the Game: Kendrick- Good young pitcher who is vastly underrated and can fill multiple roles.

Wright’s late inning homers lead rally as Mets defeat Phillies 10-9

by @ 12:15 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

In a game that featured 27 hits, Mets all star 3B David Wright’s 2 out 9th inning homer proved to be the biggest as New York rallied to defeat the host Philadelphia Phillies 10-9 Saturday afternoon. 1B-OF Fernando Tatis had 4 hits to pace the Mets while Wright and CF Carlos Beltran added 3. 7 of 8  starters had 2 hits for the World Champions with  SS Jimmy Rollins, CF Shane Victorino, 2B Chase Utley, 1B Ryan Howard, LF Raul Ibanez, 3B Pedro Feliz and C Carlos Ruiz achieving the feat.

Both starters got hit around but stayed in the game with Mets starter Mike Pelfrey going 6 and Phillies veteran lefty Jamie Moyer tossing 7. Pelfrey allowed 10 hits and 8 runs while striking out 3 and walking 1. He allowed 3 homers with Feliz,Utley and Ibanez all leaving the yard. Wright’s heroics aside, the Mets bullpen contributed greatly to this win allowing 1 run in 3 innings compared to 5 from the Phillies firemen in 2 frames.

Wright’s 2nd 2 run homer in as many innings came vs. Phillies fill-in closer Ryan Madson. Madson has been assigned the role temporarily with closer Brad Lidge having 10 blown saves on the year. The Mets 3B crushed a first pitch change-up into the left field stands for the game winner. He also homered in the 8th vs. Bretty Myers to become the 1st Met to homer in the 8th and 9th since 1B John Olerud in June 1997. “It feels good to be successful and it feels good to win a close game,” Wright said.

Star of the Game: Wright- Great to see the Franchise show some power in a season where that has been a huge issue.

Mets starting line-up:

1- 2B Luis Castillo

2- LF Fernando Tatiz

3- 3B David Wright

Revenge?: Nice to hand the Phillies a tough loss in September after the collapses of 2007(7 game lead with 17 to play)  and 2008(3.5 with 17 again). With Lidge a mess, any doubts and pressure would be welcomed for Phillies haters. The Phillies Manager knows this is not over,“You can be caught,” Charlie Manuel said. Philadelphia leads the Florida Marlins by 5 games after this loss.

Game Notes: Wright’s 2 homer game was the 1st in 2009 and his multi-homer game was September 14,2008 vs. Atlanta… Madson has 5  losses and 6 blown saves… 7 of the 9 Phillies runs came with 2 outs… Murphy stole 3rd base for his 4th theft of the year.. Mets closer Francisco Rodriquez pitched a 1-2-3 9th for his 31st save while striking out 2 including Feliz swinging to end the game

Hamels and Victorino’s big nights lead Phillies over Mets,4-2

by @ 9:25 am. Filed under 2009 Mets

LH SP Cole Hamels(9-9,4.21) threw a 7 hitter, pitching into the 7th inning while CF Shane Victorino had a career high 3 doubles, leading the NL East leading Philadelphia Philles over the lifeless New York Mets 4-2 Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. SS Jimmy Rollins and 3B Pedro Feliz added rbi singles for the winners while LF Raul Ibanez, 2B Chase Utley and Rollins paced the 12 hit attack with 2 apiece. Mets RF Jeff Francoeur had 3 of the Mets 9 hits.

Hamels pitched well and has thrown 3 strong outings out of his last 4 starts. Over 6 and 2 3rd innings, he allowed one run and 7 hits while K-ing 6.  The talented lefty knows this type of performance is needed,“I’m trying to redeem my season and finish strong, finish the way I planned on starting the year,” Hamels said. Mets starter Nelson Figueroa battled into the 6th, allowing 9 hits and 2 runs o iver 5 and a third innings. He walked 5 and struck out 3. The story of this game pitching wise was the performance of Hamels, “He was effective, ran his fastball up on our hitters and had a good changeup,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said of Hamels.

Star of the Game: Victorino- Underrated energizer for the World Champs who is one of the better all around centerfielders in the game.

Mets starting line-up:

1- CF Angel Pagan

2- Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- RF Jeff Francoeur

5- 1B Fernando Tatis

6- LF Nick Evans

8- SS Wilson Valdez

9- Pitcher

Game Notes: Mets scored both runs on outs- a 7th inning sacrifice fly from 2B Luis Castillo(Team MVP?) and a double play ground out from OF Cory Sullivan…. NY is a season high 17 games under .500…Figueroa, who was involved in the Curt Schilling trade that sent the big righty to Arizona, pitched for the Phillies in 2001. He was 4-5 with a 3.94 ERA in 19 games, including 13 starts… Strange seeing these teams play with the Mets so out of it. Not to relive awful Mets moments but NY blew 2 huge leads in the past 2 Septembers only to see the Phillies take the division on the final weekend of 2007 and 2008. In 07, the Mets had a 7 game lead with 17 games to go, 2008 it was 3.5 games with  17… Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel stayed away from slumping closer Brad Lidge. The classy righthander has blown 10 saves in 2009 after going 48 for 48 during the Phils 2008 World Championship season. The player friendly Manuel is standing by his closer, We’re definitely going to get Lidge back out there,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “I want to just give him time to settle down from a mental state and [work on] his command.” Set up man Ryan Madson convered his 7th save in 12 chances but allowed a run in the 9th.

NY looks terrible as Marlins pound out 16 hits to sweep languishing Mets,13-4

by @ 8:23 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

In a game that showed many of the reasons why the New York Mets(62-78) are among the most disappointing teams in all of baseball, The Florida Marlins (75-65) completed a 3 game sweep 13-4 Thursday night at Citi-Field in Queens. The Marlins, the best offensive team in the NL average wise, collected 16 hits, led by 3 apiece from Chris Coghlan, SS Hanley Ramirez and RK Cody Ross. 1B Nick Johnson had 4 rbi while Ramirez and Ross added 2 each. 2B Dan Uggla homered into the 2nd deck in leftfield for the games only home run. CF Angel Pagan and RF Jeff Francoeur each had 3 hits to lead the Mets.

This game should be shown as the team video for the 2009 New York Mets season. You had Mets pitchers walking batters with the bases loaded, you had fielders not fielding and a player forget how many outs the team had. Besides that, they did little wrong!!! Apparently the 30 minute pregame meeting did not work! I realize this team has about 90 million dollars with of disabled players but injuries have nothing to do with how many  outs your team has or your ability to throw the ball over the plate. This was an embarrassment and should not go unnoticed. I love Mets skipper Jerry Manuel but if his players do not look like they are interested he needs to go! That is on him! That is on them and they should care enough to understand that! Have some professional  pride!

Star of the Game: Marlins Team- Top to bottom, this team plays and makes plays. The names change and they just insert players. With a $37 million dollar payroll!!!  A Lesson for Mets GM Omar Minaya to learn from!

Mets starting line-up:

1- CF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- RF Jeff Francoeur

5- 1B Fernando Tatis

6- LF Nick Evans

7- C Omir Santos

8- SS Anderson Hernandez

9- Pitcher

Game Notes: Florida turned 3 double plays… Anderson Hernandez, filling in at SS, had his 10th error of the season…. Mets did not retire the Marlins in order 1-2-3 until the 9th… NY has walked a batter with the bases loaded 19 times, a major league high. They have also hit two batters with the sacks full according to Stats LLC… Mets starter Bobby Parnell threw 5 innings allowing 7 hits and 6 runs.(5 earned) He K-ed 6 and walked 5, while throwing 56 strikes out of 104 pitches… NY rookie reliever Tobi Stoner, a native of Germany, made his ML debut and pitched a scoreless 6th, allowing 1 hit while throwing 9 of 15 pitches for strikes… RH SP John Maine(sore shoulder) will make his first start since June 6th Sunday vs the Phillies

Big 1st inning, Nolasco lead Marlins over Mets 6-3

by @ 8:40 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

The visiting Florida Marlins used a 4 run first, hi-lighted by a 3 run homer from CF Cody Ross, and a great outing from starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco to defeat the injury depleted New York Mets 6-3 Wednesday night at Citi-Field in Queens. The win keeps the Marlins at 5.5 games out of the NL wild card spot while the injury savaged Mets stand at 62-77. Florida 2b Dan Uggla added a home run while 1B Nick Johnson had 2 hits and rbi. Mets CF Angel Pagan had 2 of the 4 NY hits.

Nolasco(11-8,5.23) was great and has tremendous tools, records and stats aside. He allowed 4 hits and 3 runs over 6 and a third innings. He K-ed 4 and walked 2. To the credit of the Marlins starter, he realized this was not the same group that he had major issues with when they had their full contingent of players back in the first two months of the season(0-1,7.20 ERA in 2 starts)“Back in those starts, if I remember correctly, I just couldn’t make that pitch to get out of the big inning,” he said. “I feel like a different person from that time.”

Star of the Game: Nolasco- Allowed a lead off double to Pagan but did not allow another hit til Pagan again doubled in the 6th! The Mets hit 9 groundouts and 2 flyballs in between. “He kept us off balance and did a great job,” New York’s RF Jeff Francoeur said.

Mets starting line-up:

1- CF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- CF Carlos Beltran

5- 1B Daniel Murphy

6- RF Jeff Francoeur

7- C Josh Thole

8- Anderson Hernandez

9- Pitcher

Game Notes: Marlins have a payroll of $37 million, the lowest in the majors…. Murphy has 30 doubles on the season….Free hot dog night at Citi-Field, all fans received a frankfurter…Mets had 4 hits but 3 doubles! STRANGE!!!!… Team had its annual picture day including stars that are injured. Amazingly, this is the closest the team has been to fielding a full squad since May!… LH Pat Misch(1-2,3.86) rallied after his tough first inning to go 6 frames. He allowed 6 hits and 5 runs while walking none and striking out 1…. Marlins closer Leo Nunez used 12 pitches to record 3 outs and earn his 20th save in the 9th

Reyes Update: Mets SS Jose Reyes spoke to the media pre-game and clearly appears agitated with questions regarding his toughness and commitment after dealing with his leg injury.

“I never thought it would take me this long to be back on the field… This is not an easy injury that I have.  I have a tear in my tendon.  People think it’s like a normal hamstring injury, it’s not normal.  I have a tear there.  When you have a tear it’s different.  That’s gonna take a long time to heal.  So, people have to understand that.  Because, I like to be on the field and play with the team.  Sometimes, people think, ‘Oh, Reyes, he doesn’t want to play.’  Why would people think I don’t want to be on the field with my team?  I love to play baseball.  I love to be on the field.  I love to have fun.  I love to enjoy the game.  That’s what I do.  So, I don’t know why people sometimes think like I don’t want to be on the field.  I live for baseball.  I’ve been playing since I was little.  I can’t do nothing in my house but watch TV and spend time with my family.  But, I love to be on the field.  So, that’s my main goal.  If I’m ready the last week of the season I’ll play the last week of the season.  I’ve been working so hard… you guys… you guys don’t know… how hard I’ve been working.  I’ve been working so hard, I mean, the past four months, but, so far it hasn’t worked.  So, hopefully it works quick.Mets Manager Jerry Manuel says Reyes is still working on getting back this season and Jose will attempt to run the bases one mopre time this season. If he still experiences pain and discomfort, surgery becomes a stronger option.

Bloggers Opinion: Reyes appeared to be very upset and amazed that somee, this writer included, question his ability to play with pain. Like him or not, the team needs him to either be ready for 2010 or have any idea when(or if!) he can return. From there they can determine the Mets and Reyes; future.

Beltran returns but Marlins homers too much as Florida defeats Mets 4-2

by @ 9:32 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

2 2 run homers by the Florida Marlins helped ruin the return of Mets all star CF Carlos Beltran, leading the visitors to a 4-2 win over New York Tuesday night at Citi-Field in Queens. Starter Tim Redding(2-5,5.78) did not pitch poorly for the Mets but allowed 2 homers(with a runner on each time) in the 3rd and 4th innings for the Marlins offense on the night. SS Hanley Ramirez(22nd) and CF Cameron Maybin(2nd) provided the blows.Mets 2B Luis Castillo had 3 hits(.315 on the year) while CF Angel Pagan had 2 hits and a run. Promising C prospect Josh Thole also drove in his 1st major league run with a sacrifice fly in the 4th.

The Big news of the night was the return of Beltran. The star CF looked fluid and moved well on flyballs. He has some Darryl Strawberry to him in that he makes things look easy and appears to glide in the outfield. He came very close to hitting a huge grand slam in the 7th but the ball died at the warning track in rightfield. “I just got under that one,” Beltran said. “Today I felt like a kid in the playground, like when I take my daughter to the playground. She’s having fun and that’s how I felt today. I felt good.” Carlos went 1 for 4 with a double, His skipper sees positives. “It will probably take him a few games to really find his rhythm at the plate,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “I think once that starts he will get on track, so to speak. He looked pretty good.”

Bloggers Opinion: Hats off to Beltran for coming back after 70 games. Not many players would battle back from this injury to come play for this dead in the water team. Fans should note who has worked to play thru injuries- A Francoeur, a Wright, a John Maine, A Cora- and who has not.

Star of the Game: Ramirez- Maybe the NL’s 2nd best player after Pujols. Amazing talent who could go 40-40 any year.

Mets starting line-up:

1- CF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- CF Carlos Beltran

5- 1B Daniel Murphy

6- RF Jeff Francoeur

7- C Josh Thole

8- SS Anderson Hernandez

9- Pitcher

Game Notes: Pagan has 9 triples, all since July 11… Ramirez is now 10 for 21 with 4 homers vs. Redding… 5 Mets relievers combined to pitch 4 innings of shut out ball for New York with only 4 Marlins reaching base(2 hits, 2 walks)… Castillo has 35 rbi… Redding allowed 5 hits and the 4 runs in 5 frames. He struck out and walked the same number,4…. 3B David Wright made his 14th error… Marlins starter Rick Vandenhurk left after the 4th with a stiff back… Team turned 2 double plays… The Marlins and their $37 million dollar payroll are 6 games out of the NL East lead and also trail The Rockies by 5.5 games in the Wild card race

Pelfrey’s arm, Murphy’s bat carry Mets over Cubs 4-2

by @ 3:04 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

The New York Mets got 8 great innings from struggling starter Mike Pelfrey while rookie 1B Daniel Murphy drove in all 4 runs, leading the host Mets to 4-2 win over the fading Chicago Cubs Sunday afternoon at Citi-Field. Murphy went 3 for 4 with a triple and home run while CF Angel Pagan and C Brian Schneider added two hits apiece. The win allows NY to win a series for the first time since July 27-30th, the Mets went 0-8-2 in series since that date.

Pelfrey’s start  was a huge, pleasant surprise Sunday. The big talented righty has been awful as off late,“My last couple starts have been embarrassing,” Pelfrey said. “I know I need to be a lot better and I’m going to be a lot better.”After winning 13 games in 2008, he had posted a 1-4 record with a 6.09 ERA in his past 6 starts. He credits the support of Mets skipper Jerry Manuel with the strong outing. “He told me he expected more out of me and I told him the same thing. I said, ‘Hey, your expectations aren’t higher than mine,'” Pelfrey said. “I can finish this thing on a positive note.” Pelfrey allowed 5 hits and 1 run(rbi double from C Geovany Soto in the 5th) while K-ing 5 and walking one. He threw 70 strikes out of 105 pitches thrown, including 18 first pitch strikes to 30 batters faced.

NY closer Francisco Rodriquez, pitching on his own booble- head day, allowed a run in the 9th before securing his 30th save in 35 chances. K Rod appeared to have a injury scare as Manuel and Mets medical personnel checked on their all star fireman. However, Frankie had  a simple explanation for his rough 9th, Leg cramps!“I probably didn’t get enough water,” he said.

Star of the Game: Pelfrey and Murphy- Sounds like a legal firm and they were against the law Sunday!

Mets starting line-up:

1- CF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- 1B Daniel Murphy

5- RF Jeff Francoeur

6- LF Cory Sullivan

7- C Brian Schneider

8- SS Anderson Hernandez

9-Pitcher

Game Notes: Murphy now has an OPS(On base percentage plus slugging) of .715 , his highest number since May….LF Cory Sullivan saw his homer streak end at 3 games…. Pagan stole his 13th base of the season…Murphy made his 12th error on a catch in the 1st.. 2B Luis Castillo has 14 sacrifice hits to lead  ML.. Mets RF Jeff Francoeur was robbed of a hit on a great catch and throw play from Cubs SS Andres Blanco in the 4th. “That’s as good a play as I’ve ever seen made at the major league level,” Cubs Manager Lou Piniella said.

Lee’s two bombs lead Cubs over Mets 5-3

by @ 10:32 am. Filed under 2009 Mets

Veteran 1B Derek Lee homered twice and drove in 3 runs while starter Rich Harden struck out 10, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 5-3 win over the New York Mets Saturday afternoon at Citi-Field. Mets LF Cory Sullivan and Cubs 3B Aramis Ramirez(2 run) also homered in the game. 2B Luis Castillo and C Josh Thole(making his home debut) led NY with 2 hits while Lee paced the Cubs with 3.

Harden pitched only five innings due to his high pitch count, allowing 7 hits and two runs(1 earned). “I wanted to get a little deeper into the game,” said Harden, who threw 73 of 102 pitches for strikes. “It’s tough on the ‘pen. They’ve got to get through four innings. They did a good job.” 4 Cubs relievers pitched the final 4 innings with fireballer Carlos Marmol closing it out for his 9th save.

Mets starter Nelson Figueroa(2-4,4.74) pitched a solid game but was done in by the longball.  He tossed 6 innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs(all on homers) while K-ing 8 and walking 2. He pitched well but still cannot believe that the ball he thrw to Ramirez left the park,“I don’t know how he got his hands inside that pitch,” Figueroa said. “I felt I made a good pitch.” Rookie  Ken Takahashi, Elmer Dessens(homer to Lee in the 8th) and Pedro Feliciano pitched the final 3 innings for NY.

Star of the Game:

Mets starting line-up:

1- CF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- 1B Daniel Murphy

5- RF Jeff Francoeur

6- LF Cory Sullivan

7- C Josh Thole

8- SS Anderson Hernandez

9- Pitcher

Game Notes:The game featured 22 strikeouts…. Sullivan now has back to back homers after going without a round tripper since Septemeber 12, 2007….Harden leads the majors with an average of 10.88 strikeouts per nine innings…Injury updates: CF Carlos Beltran is scheduled to play 9 innings Saturday and Sunday. If he is symptom free, Manager Jerry  Manuel expects to possibly see him back as early as Tuesday. RH SP John Maine was scheduled to pitch in Class A St. Lucie and could return next weekend.

Price of Ks: Harden struck at least 2 in each of the first four innings but his strikeouts lead to overuse of the bullpen due to his high pitch totals. “It’s good in a way but it’s bad in a way because he throws a lot of pitches,” Piniella said. “You’ve got to live with it. There’s nothing you can do about it.”

5 run 8th leads Mets over slumping Cubs,6-2

by @ 7:35 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Starter Bobby Parnell put together a strong outing for the first time in 4 starts while his teammates backed him with a 5 run explosion in the 8th, leading the host New York  Mets over the rival Chicago Cubs 6-2 Friday night at Citi-Field. Parnell, a converted reliever, struck out 7 and allowed 5 hits over 7 frames. He escaped a huge bases loaded none out jam in the 7th. 1B Fernando Tatis, LF Cory Sullivan, C Omir Santos and SS Anderson Hernandez all had run scoring hits in the 8th. Sullivan, who made a great diving catch in the outfield, also homered.

Although he did not earn the win, Parnell was a huge part of this Mets victory , He looked like someone who could pitch as a regular starter, mixing and matching his pitches, while looking fluid. “I think I’m more acquainted with starting. I want to probably pursue that a little bit more,” Parnell said. “It’s going to be a time to develop and a time to gain some confidence and just learn how to pitch in the major leagues as a starter. Just try to take something and learn something every day.”

Reliever Brian Stokes(2-4,3.94, 2 blown saves, 8 holds) got a vulture win after blowing the lead for Parnell in the 8th, allowing 4 hits and two runs in 1 and a third innings. Mets closer Francisco Rodriquez(3-4,2.98) got the final two outs for his 29th save and did so in style, striking out promising Cubs rookie Jake Fox swinging for the final out. The win puts New York at 61-74 on the year.

Star of the Game: Sullivan and Parnell- Co- Stars and hopefully will earn roles on the 2010 Mets with continued strong play.

Mets starting line-up:

1- CF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 3B David Wright

4- 1B Daniel Murphy

5- RF Jeff Francoeur

6- LF Cory Sullivan

7- C Omir Santos

8- SS Anderson Hernandez

9- Pitcher

Game Notes: Sullivan and 2B Luis Castillo led the Mets with 2 hits apiece…. Say what you want about the team’s season but the stadium was at almost 91% capacity on a Friday night with the US Open across the street and college football in full flight. Good job, Fans!… Sullivan’s homer was his 1st since Sept 12,2007… CF Carlos Beltran(knee) played 7 innings for the Brooklyn Cyclones in a minor league game, going 0 for 3. He is now 1 for 8 with an rbi and two walks in 3 games for Brooklyn… Cubs starting pitchers came into the game with a 0.32 ERA in their previous 4 games, allowing 1 earned run in 28 innings.. Cubs LF Alfonso Soriano is out indefinitely with a sore right knee… Mets ace Johan Santana talked to the media pre-game. Among the hi-lights: He plans to be ready from day 1 in 2010, the elbow is good and he would still be pitching if the team was in contention.

A day of firsts, as Misch wins and Thole hits but the Franchise Wright drives in 3 as Mets defeat Rockies,8-3

by @ 9:48 am. Filed under 2009 Mets

LH Pat Misch earned his first ML win with 7 strong innings, prime rookie prospect Josh Thole got a hit in his 1st ML at bat and the franchise, David Wright, drove in 3 runs, leading the New York Mets to a 8-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies Thursday afternoon at Coors Field in Denver. NY pounded out 16 hits, led by a team high 3 from CF Angel Pagan and Wright. 1B Daniel Murphy also homered for the Mets. An all around great day for the National League team from NY. “Those are long dreams that are fulfilled before our very eyes,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “It’s exciting seeing a guy get his first win in a game another guy gets his first hit in his first game.”

Misch, who has pitched great in both starts(3 earned runs in 14 innings) for NY since being inserted into the rotation with all of the injuries to starting pitchers, allowed 4 hits and only back to back homers to Colorado’s 3B Ian Stewart and C Chris Ianetta in the 7th. The southpaw struck out 3 and walked 2, while throwing only 95 pitches(58 strikes) to navigate a tough Rockies lineup.   “Perpetual” LH RP Pedro Feliciano(5-4,3.14,21 holds) finished up the game, throwing the final 2 frames and allowed a homer to SS Clint Barnes in the 8th.

The Mets franchise player, 3B David Wright, went 3 for 4 and had the big blow of the game in the 4 run 4th, a double vs. Rockies all star Jason Marquis(14-10,3.75).”It was one of my better pitches,” Marquis said. “He put the barrel on it and was probably thinking right field and it sneaked by Todd [Helton].”Wright returned to his old helmet after having feel issues with the Rawlings; bulky S100  model. “It’s just not comfortable,” Wright said of the new helmet that will be required in the minors next season. “The last thing I need to worry about in the box is to try to shove it on my head. I will stay with the one I used today.” However, playing wise, the prognosis is good for the Mets third baseman, “I felt like I was back on my game,” Wright said.

Sad day for Baseball: Former long time Detroit Tigers voice  Ernie Harwell announced Friday that he has inoperable cancer. The immensely popular broadcaster worked in the industry for 55 years(42 covering the Tigers). Harwell  is 91 and still makes appearances regularly promoting the club and his favorite hobby, walking. He served as the Tigers radio voice from 1960 to 2002. Stay strong, Ernie!!!

Star of the Game: Misch— 1st ML win in 55 appearances. Should earn serious consideration for a rotation spot in 2010 with a strong September. He has a great attitude and it showed in his post game presser, “It’s stuff you dream of and think about. I never thought it would take this long,” said Misch, who was pacing in the dugout in the ninth. “I stayed out to watch until the game ended. I had to watch it. I didn’t want it to end.”

Hall of Fame type praise: Manuel offered an interesting comparison regarding the winning pitcher in his conference, “I mentioned to him after his last outing that he reminded me of [Tom] Glavine early in his career: similar in style, throwing off-speed pitches at any time in the count,” Manuel said.

Mets starting line-up:

1- CF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Anderson Hernandez

3- 3B David Wright

4- 1B Daniel Murphy

5- RF Jeff Francoeur

6- LF Cory Sullivan

7- C Josh Thole

8- SS Wilson Valdez

9- Pitcher

Game Notes:   LH Jerry Koosman, a Mets legend, began serving a 6 month prison sentence for tax evasion in Wisconsin. The popular southpaw was back in Queens within the last month for the Miracle Mets of ’69 reunion….. The Mets plan to make no changes to the dimensions of Citi-Field,according to a report in the NY Daily News Thursday.  The park ranks 11th out of 16 NL in homers per game.(1.67 per game) Shea Stadium, the former home, gave up 2.15 a game in 2008… Rockies superstar 1B has hit safely in 15 of 16 games….Every Mets starter recorded a hit

Big day for two:  Misch’ day was big but when you consider that prime  prospect Josh Thole added his 1st ML hit, this is a day Mets fans will remember. The youngster gets it as well, listen to him post game. “I did not know it was Pat’s first victory until we got into here,” Thole said in the clubhouse after the game. “One of my teammates said we have to share the lineup card. I’ll give it all to him.”

Giambi’s 8th inning 2 run single the decisive blow as Rockies defeat Mets 5-2

by @ 7:14 am. Filed under 2009 Mets

The wild card leading Colorado Rockies got a huge hit from new comer Jason Giambi and another big performance from staff ace Ubaldo Jimenez(13-10,3.28) leading them to a big 5-2 win over the New York Mets Wednesday night at Citi- Field. Mets starter Tim Redding pitched his 3rd consecutive strong outing, going 6 and 2 third innings while allowing 7 hits and 2 runs. He K-ed 6 and walked 2. Jeff Francoeur homered for the Mets while LF Seth Smith did the same for the Rockies. Cf Carlos Gonzalez, 1B Todd Helton and SS Troy Tulowitzki added two hits a piece to lead Colorado.

With the score tied at 2-2, Giambi hit Brian Stokes first pitch over Mets SS Anderson Hernandez’ glove to score 2, making it 4-2 Rockies. “It’s kind of a new experience for me, but at the same time I enjoy being in that spot,” said the 38-year-old veteran. “I’m thankful that the Rockies came calling and gave me this opportunity. … Like I said, there are no small roles in a chance to win a pennant.”

Jimenez, who maybe the best pitcher in the NL you have never heard of, went 5-1 with a 1.77 ERA in August. He allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits over 8 frames and amazingly pitched into the 6th for the 24TH STRAIGHT OUTING!!! The staff ace had a lot of confidence in the Rockies new clutch pinch hitter. “I knew he would deliver,” Jimenez said. “I knew he would come through and he did.” The respect was returned from the former AL MVP back to his starting pitcher. “You’re looking at a future Cy Young winner,” Giambi said. “If he can get his whole game together: overpowering fastball, great stuff, great mound presence. Yeah, he’s definitely one of those guys who has the potential to be phenomenal in this league. The ball explodes out of his hand.”

Star of the Game: Giambi- Good move for the Rockies to add a professional bat for late inning pinch hitting. Can draw a walk to start a rally or do what he did Wednesday, provide a key run producing play. A proven winner who will still pop the odd homer and is one of the good guys of the game. Dodgers made a similar move for 1B Jim Thome earlier this week.

Mets starting line-up:

1- CF Angel Pagan

2- 2B Luis Castillo

3- 1B Daniel Murphy

4- RF Jeff Francoeur

5- LF Cory Sullivan

6- 3B Fernando Tatis

7- C Brian Schneider

8- SS Wilson Valdez

9- Pitcher

Game Notes: CF Carlos Beltran DH-ed for the Brooklyn Cyclones Wednesday night and went 1 for 3 with a walk and rbi. He is scheduled to play the field for 5 innings Thursday…..Rockies closer Huston Street, who is 33 for 34 in save opportunities, was unavailable to pitch. The talented righty was dealing with some discomfort in his upper arm. “He has a little tightness in his biceps area,” Rockies manager Jim Tracy explained. “It was a little bit tight last night and it wasn’t loosening up real good while we were rallying in the eighth inning.”….Giambi is now 2 for 4 as pinch hitter for his career… NY has lost 9 of 11… Mets skipper Jerry Manuel on Giambi’s big hit: “We had him played just right. Our shortstop wasn’t tall enough,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said.

Wright returns but Pelfrey’s luck does not, Rockies punish depleted Mets,8-3

by @ 7:30 am. Filed under 2009 Mets

Veteran Colorado 1b Todd Helton had a big three run homer while super rookie Carlos Gonzalez added a two run shot, helping the NL wild card leading Rockies defeat the New York Mets Tuesday night at Coors Field. The win helped the hosts end a 5 game losing streak and put Colorado one game ahead of the San Francisco Giants in the ever changing playoff race. Mets superstar 3B David Wright returned from his mid August beaning and went 1 for 3 with a walk and run. CF Angel Pagan had 2 of New York’s 6 hits.

Mike Pelfrey continued his  nightmare season with another awful outing. Over 4 innings, he allowed 6 hits and 7 runs(6 earned) while walking 5(insane) and K-ing 4. How bad are things going for the big righty now?  Pelfrey entered the game with a 20 inning scoreless streak vs. Colorado. After this game, he is 1-4 with a 8.63 ERA in his last 6 starts in 2009. Another lost player in a lost season for New York.

Colorado had 11 hits, led by LF Seth Smith’s 3. Helton and 3B Garrett Atkins had 2 hits while Smith and Gonzalez scored twice. Crafty lefty Jorge De La Rosa(13-9,4.60) battled for 6 frames, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs(1 earned). He K-ed 6 and walked 3.  6 of 8 Rockies regulars had a walk and hit while every starter reached base at least once. This looks like a dangerous balanced club that could do damage in the playoffs, they hit, they field and they have better pitching than you think.

The lone positive for New York was the return of Wright from his horrific beaning incident against Matt Cain on August 15th. “I felt surprisingly good considering I missed the last couple of weeks,” Wright said. The Mets franchise is sporting his new Rawlings specialized helmet with added padding and reinforcement. Although he has taken some ribbing for the head gear,  #5 does not mind, he is all about health and safety . “Obviously, I don’t care what I look like,” said Wright, razzed by fans and players alike. “If it provides more safety I’m all for that. Maybe I’ve got an odd-shaped head.”

Star of the Game: Helton- Classy veteran should be an easy Hall of Famer. Great  bat, attitude and glove. Does not get the credit he deserves due to the ball park and the lack of coverage in a non-baseball town. Did you know he was the QB at the University of Tennessee before some guy named Manning?

Game Notes:Nick Evans started in LF, going 1 for 3 with walk… Ken Takahashi finished the game for the Mets, allowing 1 hit over 1 and 2 thirds….. Team turned 2 double plays while also making 2 errorS..1B Jason Giambi made his NL debut in the 7th and drove in a run for the Rockies for with a four pitch walk… Pagan, RF Jeff Francoeur and 1B Fernando Tatis had rbi for the Mets… Look for Mets skipper Jerry Manuel to rest Wright today as he eases the 3rd Baseman back into the line-up

Mets Off day update

by @ 12:17 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Mets Notes:

1- CF Carlos Beltran was examined by team physicians Monday and cleared to began a rehab assignment. He will play Wednesday for the Brooklyn Cyclones.

2- 3B David Wright will return to the line-up Tuesday vs. the Rockies. Wright, who was beaned by a pitch August 15th, will be sporting a new & improved helmet to protect his head. The headgear, manufactured by Rawlings has more padding inside and allows the helmet to absorb more impact. Ironically, Wright was set to model the helmets BEFORE the injury. Cubs starting pitcher Ryan Dempster wore the new headgear Saturday and reported no problems. “You could tell it was a little bigger. And it was shaped a little different. But I knew he was wearing it,” Wright said. “The biggest difference was the inside.”  The Mets franchise does not expect any problems with his return or fear of inside pitches. I think it will take care of itself,” Wright said. “I’m just going to make sure I walk before I run. I don’t expect any trouble getting back in the box. I guess the ultimate test will be if I get another pitch up and in. But I’m not going to worry about it.”

3- The team recalled the much hyped prospect 1B-C Josh Thole, who was hitting .328 at Doube A Binghamton. He is expected to play vs. righthanded pitchers according to Manager Jerry Manuel.

4- Starting left-handed pitchers Johan Santana and Oliver Perez both underwent successful surgeries Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. Santana had elbow fragments removed his pitching elbow while Perez’ right knee needed some scar tissue pulled from his patella tendon.
