Veteran RH SP Freddy Garcia, a 5th starter candidate , was assigned to the minors Wednesday. Garcia(0-3 with a 16.71 spring ERA) was beat out  by fellow free agent signee Livian Hernandez for the last rotation spot. Garcia is still recovering from 2007 shoulder surgery and makes a nice insurance policy if he can regain some velocity.

2 big innings help Japan defeat Team USA,9-4

by @ 8:23 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Defending WBC champion Japan used 2 big innings(the 5 run 4th,4 run 9th) to defeat Team USA 9-4 at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles Sunday night. The USA ends the 2009 WBC with a 4-4 record , Manager Davey Johnson’s squad was beset by injuries and players who refused to participate.

Team USA got off to a great start as Baltimore Orioles 2b Brian Roberts crushed a lead off homer to opem the game. NY Mets 3b David Wright continued his strong tournament with a clutch 2 out double in the 3rd to make it 2-1 USA. Jimmy Rollins had another strong game, going 4 for 4 with a walk to pace the USA offense.

The Japanese lineup, featuring 7 lefties to attack US starter Houston Astros RH Roy Oswalt, broke open a 2-1 game with a 5 run 4th chasing the USA starter. Manager Johnson was put in a tough spot when his lefty reliever Pittsburgh Pirates LH John Grabow had trouble warming up in the unseasonably cold weather, forcing him to keep Oswalt in the game longer than he wished. The damage( Oswalt’s line: 3 2/3 innings, 6 hits, 6 runs(4 earned), 1 walk and 1 K) was done and the USA played from behind the rest of the night.

Japanese and Boston Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka was strong and battled into the 5th, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 runs with 3 walks and 4 Ks. The strong Japanese bullpen followed and gave up only 4 hits and 2 runs over 4 1/3. The Japanese bats hammered out 10 hits(7 singles) and drew 2 walks.

The USA drew to within 2 runs in the 8th after Milwaukee Brewers LF Ryan Braun drove in two with an rbi double. Braun was standed  at 3rd when PH Evan Longoria(Tampa Rays) K-ed and Roberts grounded back to the pitcher. Japan pulled away in the ninth with 3 runs after an error by NY Yankees and Team USA SS Derek Jeter’s (poor throw) extended the inning. Japan now plays Korea for the WBC championship Monday night.

Mets update

by @ 7:50 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Not a whole lot of news from Mets camp, slow week. The biggest news is that it appears that veteran free agent signee Livian Hernandez has won the 5th starter job with his strong spring. The team sent down top pitching prospect Jonathon Niese last week along with C Robinson  Cancel, signaling Hernandez has won the job.

Manager Jerry Manuel has inserted LF Daniel Murphy in the 2 hole and has scraped putting 2b Luis Castillo in that spot. Castillo will hit 8th.

OF Jeremy Reed thought to be a throw in to the JJ Putz trade, is hitting .426 in 21 spring games. Reed, once a top ML prospect for both the White Sox and Mariners, can help this club with his versatility(can play all 3 OF spots) and bat.

Team USA loses game, player, On to Semis

by @ 12:34 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Team USA lost the Miami region to Venezuela Wednesday night(10-6) but more importantly, the lost star 1b Kevin Youkilis(Boston Red Sox) for the remainder of the tournament due to an ankle problem. Game wise, the loss means nothing, the USA was in the semifinals in Los Angeles, starting this weekend. However, the health situation is not good and has started to effect the club on field, particularily defensively.

The team is already down a 2b(Red Sox Dustin Pedroia), DH(Atlanta Braves Chipper Jones) and late inning reliever(Florida Marlin Matt Lindstrom) due to various  injuries. Milwaukee Brewers LF Ryan Braun hopes to play Sunday with his right rib cage injury & received a major injury scare in the Wednesday contest. NY Mets star 3b David Wright fouled a ball off his foot and cracked his toenail, which is very painful, He claims he will play.

The Youkilis injury forced poor Adam Dunn to play 1b and he had 2 huge errors that help lead to 4 unearned runs. The team lucked out when Brian Roberts(Baltimore Orioles) was able to fill in for Pedroia but with Derek Lee(Chicago Cubs) hurt in camp, the club does not have a strong alternative.(EDITORS NOTE HERE- WHY DOESN’T THE SAINTED CAPTAIN JETER CALL MARK TEIXEIRA IN FLA?) Mark DeRosa(Chicago Cubs) could play in pinch but he is best suited in a super sub role for Manager Davey Johnson.

DeRosa was the offensive star for the USA Wednesday, having a homer among his three hits as well as 3 rbi. Roberts, Derek Jeter(NY Yankees), Chris Iannetta(Arizona Diamondbacks) and Curtis Granderson(Detroit Tigers) all had 2 hits. The guys continued to battle even after a 3rd inning 6-1 deficit.  The team advances to the semifinals with Venezuela, Japan and Korea, seedings to be determined after Thursday’s Korea-Japan contest.

Wright’s 2 run single caps 3 run 9th inning rally,Team USA defeats Puerto Rico, advances to Semifinals

by @ 12:29 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

NY Mets 3b David Wright’s dramatic 2 run single capped an amazing 3 run 9th inning  comeback, leading the United States to an exciting 6-5 victory over Puerto Rico Tuesday night in Miami. The win clinches a semi-final berth for the USA 2009 entry into World Baseball classic, with the defeat, a game Puerto Rican club was eliminated. The USA plays a seeding type game with Venezuela Wednesday night at 7 pm in Florida before departing for Los Angeles for the final four.

The game was a back and forth struggle with 3 home runs(2 by PR with Toronto Blue Jays OF Alex Rios and NY Mets 1b  Carlos Delgado, Solo shot by USA 1b Kevin Youkilis) hi-lighting the offense. Wright and Philadelphia Phillies OF Shane Victorino had 3 hits apiece to pace the United States attack. The injured and burnout American pitching staff used 7 hurlers to earn the victory.

The USA 9th started with Victorino and Baltimore Orioles 2b Brian Roberts getting back to back singles. After an out and Roberts stealing second, Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins drew an 8 pitch walk. Youkilis then saw 5 pitches for a walk and 5-4 deficit. Wright then hit a low inside pitch to right, sending the 13,224 into a frenzy and the USA roster into the semis.

Top of the order leads the way, USA eliminates Netherlands,8-3

by @ 1:41 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Team USA SS Jimmy Rollins(Philadelphia Phillies) and newcomer 2b Brian Roberts  (Baltimore Orioles) ignited the club, leading the USA to a 9-3 victory  Sunday over the Netherlands. The win keeps the red, white and blue alive in round 2 and eliminated the cinderella team of the World Baseball classic in  the Netherlands, who ousted one of the tourney favorites , the Dominican Republic in the opening round. Now the United States faces another elimination game Tuesday(7 pm) vs the winner of Monday’s Venezuela-Puerto Rico contest.

The R and R boys, Rollins(Triple,homer,2 runs,4 rbi) & Roberts(3 hits, 2 runs, 1 rbi, 2 walks) were on base all night and sparked the USA attack. New Washington Nationals OF Adam Dunn again homered while Milwaukee Brewers LF Ryan Braun added 2 hits. Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt pitched  a great game(4 innings, 5 hits, 5 Ks) , while 6 relievers combined to finish the game. Oswalt’s performance was huge, when you consider the team posting a 7+ era over the first 4 games, with fellow starters Jake Peavy(14.40) and Jeremy Guthrie(18.00) the chief culprits.

Interesting situation occured in 8th inning with the game in hand. Netherlands OF Bryan Engelhardt hit a tremendous home run to right, but his admiration of the shot drew the ire of the USA bench, most notably NY Mets 3b David Wright. Matt Lindstrom then fired his next pitch way to the right of the Netherlands batter, causing a bench clear. No punches thrown or anything else from this incident. Lindstrom could not finish the inning and has been shut down for 7-10 days with a strained rotator cuff. Braun also came out of the game with tightness in his right side(C Brian McCann took his spot in LF) but said Monday he is fine.

Team USA lineup vs the Netherlands-

1-SS Jimmy Rollins- Philadelphia Phillies

2-2b Brian Roberts-Baltimore Orioles

3-DH Derek Jeter-NY Yankees

4-1b Kevin Youkilis-Boston Red Sox

5-3b David Wright-NY Mets

    (Mark DeRosa, Cleveland Indians, inserted)

6- RF Adam Dunn, Washington Nationals

    (Shane Victorino, Philadelphia Phillies,inserted)

7-LF Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers

(Brian McCann, Atlanta Braves, pinch hit for in the 8th)

8- C Chris Iannetta,Arizona Diamondbacks

9-CF Curtis Granderson, Detroit Tigers

Notes- DH-3b Chipper Jones ,Atlanta Braves, has had to withdraw from the tournament with a strained  right oblique muscle, almost identical to the injury that claimed AL MVP 2b Dustin Pedroia,Boston Red Sox. Jones was clearly upset saying goodbye to his teammates and is viewed as a major team leader.

Mets Notes-Redding shut down,Bullpen update

by @ 12:57 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Mets free agent signing and potential 5th starter Tim Redding was shut  down Saturday after experiencing weakness and pain in his throwing shoulder. GM Omar Minaya has all but ruled him out for the start of the season and it appears that either veterans Livian  Hernandez, Freddy Garcia or rookie Jonathon Niese will get the nod in the 5th rotation spot.

The club also claimed RH Fernando Nieve from the Astros Saturday. He will join the group of seven competing for 3 spots in the bullpen. Nieve joins veteran RHs Bobby Parnell, Darren O’Day, Brian Stokes and lefties Ron Villone and Casey Fossum in a battle for jobs. Minaya likes returnee Nelson Figueroa as a swing man type, (5th spot, long man combination) & is not ruling out starting the season with a lone lefty reliever(Pedro Feliciano) on the roster.

Puerto Rico shows no mercy, punishes USA 11-1 in 7, Pedroia out for WBC

by @ 12:44 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

The United States entry into the 2009 World Baseball Classic suffered two huge losses Saturday night, a game and sparkplug. First, the club lost American League MVP Dustin Pedroia(Boston Red Sox 2b) for the remainder of the tournament to an oblique injury. Things got much worse on the field as the club was destroyed in 7 innings by a strong Puerto Rican club, 11-1 in 7 innings, international rules end games with 10 run deficits after 5 innings. Atlanta Braves starter Javier Vasquez pitched great for the victory, allowing only 4 hits and a run over 5 frames. NY Mets superstar CF Carlos Beltran led the 13 hit attack with a home run, walk, 2 rbi and 3 runs. RF Adam Dunn and C Brian McCann has 2 hits a piece to led the USA offense.

As bad as yesterday was for the USA, they still can advance to the championship round. The first step would be a victory over the Netherlands Sunday night(7:30 pm on ESPN2). Another defeat in this round would result in the red, white and blue being eliminated. A victory Sunday would keep the USA alive and they would then play the loser of Monday’s Puerto Rico- Venezuela (Both defeated the Americans in the past 2 contests) game Tuesday. Some good news lineup wise, Atlanta Braves star and Team USA DH Chipper Jones returned from injury Saturday. Baltimore Orioles 2b Brian Roberts has also joined Team USA to replace Pedroia, giving manager Davey Johnson some flexibility with super sub Mark Derosa’s ability to play anywhere in the infield and outfield. Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt will take the mound for the Americans.

USA looks sluggish, Venezuela clinches region in WBC, 5-3

by @ 10:23 am. Filed under 2009 Mets

Team USA lost their first game of the 2009 WBC Wedbnesday night, 5-3 to Venezuela at Rogers Center in Toronto. The Americans looked like a team that was happy to advance to round 2 and played like it. Give credit to Venezuela, who like Team USA was already in the quarterfinals, but Team USA had several bad at bats and the pitching failed to put people away all day. C Chris Iannetta entered the game late and hit a 2 run homer to lead the USA batters.

USA captain and NY Yankees SS Derek Jeter said this game had a different feel and the Americans looked content with their fate. Chicago Cubs LH SP Ted Lilly allowed only a solo home run to C Henry Blanco over 3 innings, while the regular relievers all pitched well.(5 pitchers, zero runs over 4 innings) However, Baltimore Orioles SP Jeremy Guthrie was hit hard in 2 innings(7 hits and 4 runs with 2 walks), He had many long at bats and could not finish hitters.

Venezuela used 6 pitchers to limit the USA offense to 7 hits(5 walks) and the staff made big pitches in big spots, stranding 10 American runners. Jeter had 2 hits, while Milwaukee Brewers LF Ryan Braun continued his strong tourney with 3 hits and an rbi. The USA mounted a minor rally in the 9th thanks to an error but Jeter was thrown out on a double steal and new NY Met closer Francisco Rodriquez K-ed Kevin Youkilis to end the rally. Team USA advances to face Puerto Rico Saturday at 830 pm in Miami in round 2.

Team USA Game 3 Lineup-

1-SS Jimmy Rollins-Philadelphia Phillies

2- 2b Dustin Pedroia-Boston Red Sox

3-DH Derek Jeter- NY Yankees

4-1b Kevin Youkilis-Boston Red Sox

5-3b David Wright- NY Mets

8- C Brian McCannAtlanta Braves

(C Chris Iannetta, Arizona Diamondbacks, inserted in 8th)

9- CF Shane VictorinoPhiladelphia Phillies

(CF Curtis Granderson,Detroit Tigers, inserted in 5th)

Team Notes- 3b-DH Chipper Jones took batting practice pregame to test his injured oblique and reports he is about a week away. Manager Davey Johnson was not as optimistic, putting forth a 10 days to 2 week timeframe. Los Angeles Angels closer Brian Fuentes, out for round one with famil  issey issues, officially withdraw from the team. He has a  minor back injury, Pittsburgh Pirates LH John Grabow will stay with the team for the remainder of the WBC

USA crushes Venezuela 15-6, 1 win away from winning region C in the WBC

by @ 7:25 am. Filed under 2009 Mets

Team USA used a huge 8 run explosion in the 6th inning ,advancing to the 2nd round of the 2009 World Baseball Classic, punishing Venezuela, 15-6 in front of more than 13,000 fans in Toronto. The Americans pounded out 16 hits and were led by Cleveland Indians INF-OF Mark Derosa and Arizona Diamondbacks Chris Iannetta’s 4 rbis. Florida Marlins reliever Matt Lindstrom got the win with a strong inning and  third, while Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt started and pitched into the 4th. He was 2 pitches under the first round limit(68 thrown,70 allowed) but looked strong despite allowing 6 hits and 3 runs.

Offensively, Milwaukee Brewers LF Ryan Braun, Washington Nationals OF Adam Dunn and Boston Red Sox 1b Kevin Youkilis all homered. Youkilis, batting cleanup, added 4 runs while New York Mets superstar 3b David Wright added 3 hits and 2 runs out of the DH spot. The Venezuelan team features many MLB veterans including Detroit Tigers stars Miguel Cabrera and Magglio Ordonez, Houston Astros SS Miguel Tejeda and Baltimore Orioles 3b Melvin Mora but lost due to the pitching staff’s relief corps allowing 13 runs over 5 innings. Conversely, the USA bullpen gave up 3 over 5 1/3 innings.

The USA(2-0) must win 1 more game(Double elimination format) to  clinch the top seed in the region, Wednesday at 6:30 pm  they play one of 3 opponents(Italy, Canada or Venezuea) in Toronto. One situation to keep an eye on is an injury to Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones in this contest, he appeared to suffer an oblique injury on a swing and was replaced midgame. 2009 WBC Team USA Game 1 summary

by @ 3:05 pm. Filed under 2009 Mets

Team USA used 3 home runs and strong relief from the bullpen to win the all important opener in the 2009 World Baseball classic Saturday, defeating host team  Canada 6-5.  A strong pro- Canadian crowd of over 42,000 saw home runs from 1b Kevin Youkilis,C Brian McCann(2 run) and RF Adam Dunn as well as shots from Canadiens C Russell  Martin and 1b Joey Votto. Pitchers seemed rusty and wild(combined 13 walks(7 by USA pitchers) but competed, rules state starters are limited to 70 pitches in the opening round. San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy started and threw 58 over 3 innings of work, allowing a run in the first after a bout with wildness, Votto crushed a pitch to right in the 3rd for the final run allowed by the USA starter.

6 Team USA relievers allowed 3 runs over the final 6 innings but overall, the staff  allowed only 7 hits. Veteran Latroy Hawkins pitched an inning for the win while closer JJ Putz had to retire Canada’s best player, Boston Red Sox star OF Jason Bay, with the tying run on.  McCann had 3 rbi, while Dunn added 2. Youkilis scored 3 runs and worked counts all day.

Give credit to Canada’s pitchers in this game. Lineup wise, the Maple Leafs have a good club but little was known about the Canadian hurlers. They looked impressive at times(Particularily reliever Phillippe Aumont(2 ks in an inning) and starter Mike Johnson(vicious breaking ball) and could do some damage in future years. This team is not far off from being a major power, more than half of the starting lineup are easily recognizable names to MLB fans. You could do worse than a 3-4-5 of Votto, Minnesota Twins star Justin Morneau and Bay.

Team USA is scheduled to play Venezuela(7-0 victors over Italy in their 1st game) tonight at 8 at the Rodgers Center. Houston Astros ace  Roy  Oswalt will start for the Red, White and Blue while Detroit Tigers RH Armando Galarraga takes the mound for Venezuela.

Nothing more than a muscle strain and he was scheduled to play catch today. Mets Manager Jerry Manuel was not concerned due to the fact that he has appeared in 2 spring training games(3 innings total) ….OF Ryan Church, Utility man Angel Pagan and 2b Luis Castillo have missed some time here with minor health issues, nothing major, just spring training fatigue, rust, etc…. 5th starter candidates Tim Redding and Freddy Garcia had a day of mixed results Sunday vs the University of Michigan.
